I remember going there with my dad as a kid in the early 90s. We'd camp there with his friends, line up the campers and basically spend the night at the track. I remember waking up in the morning and playing around outside while the cars did the early pre-race practice and/or qualifying, before the fans showed up. I miss it. Waking up to an empty track with the only noise you can hear for miles is the sound of stock cars running on the track one-by-one is something special I don't think anyone is allowed to experience unless they're on the pit crew or TV crew.

1st, Sorry for my bad english.
Its a real pleasure to have these "vintage" videos. Thats REAL Nascar !!!
I am afraid about the next season rules. I heard about many changes for 2021 like 1 central nut instead 5. and more.
For my french point of view, the Nascar will lose slowly what it's interesting for. It will look more and more like the Australian V8 supercar. Not too bad but its not Nascar.

I'd rather watch these ol' races from the 80s than what they turned it into today, with all these kids that still live at home with mama (referring to the "top 3" NASCAR divisions) that are considered the world's best ???????
I spend a lot more time watching INDY Car and NHRA nowadays. F1 pulling for the Haas team too.
Back to this... I miss the 80s so much, last year I bought the complete years of Stock Car Racing Magazine (80 & 81) just to relive the transition from the "old" cars to the new "downsized " Cup cars.
So fascinating to read what they wrote back then. I was 13 and couldn't get enough of it. Paper route money going to the newsstand to but SCR and Grand National Scene.

When the Rock Concert Carolina Rebellion came to the track in 2019, those investors lost over $3 million because it was poorly planned. Since then, nothing has happened at the track. I am 1 of 1 of all NASCAR fans that never liked Richard Petty. I started watching races at 3 years old who's was in 1987. My first race was the 1987 The Winston. I still remember seeing Dale turn himself off the front bumper of Bill Elliott and go into the grass and come still with the race car intact. But more impressively to me was, HE STILL HAD THE LEAD! Obviously Bill could have passed Dale by staying on the throttle when Dale went into the grass and go around him possibly on the outside of turn 1. After that, it was no holds barred racing from both driver's. Dale won't letting Bill by, and Bill tried to spin Dale out without it looking to obvious. Then I felt the tire after deciding to go after Dale of turn 4 on lap 9 of 10.

You look back at these old races and knowing what we know today you have to think that everyone in the cars and in the pits were just plain nuts.
    Pit procedures look almost alien
High speed entry, nearly full throttle exit, no fire suits or helmets, over the wall long before the car is even near the pit box, fueling the car sideways outside the box blocking the whole pit lane because the driver came in hot and spun
    Just plain crazy

    • @sbmcvp4525

AND that's why Nascar isn't what it used to be. Took away the mystique and danger, put everybody in a "plastic bubble" with rubber walls, in "IROC" cars, BS cautions, competition cautions and stages, to keep all the cars on the lead lap, and call it the most competitive it's ever been. ??????
Well, they lost me as a fan. That's why I'm here. I'll take any of these old races any day. Been done with what crap they turned it into. Won't go into the difference of men, and little boys or the "attitude" era that began in 2001 (Kurt Busch) that respect for the sport, it's history and predecessors went out the window.
A damn clown show today. Sooo glad I got experience THIS Nascar as a kid. Couldn't get enough. So glad to re-live it though UA-cam.

    • @yorgle11
      @yorgle11 Рік тому +2

@@sbmcvp4525 I agree. And I just have to point out - the "exciting finish" the announcer talked about at the end, would never have happened if they had thrown a BS "debris caution" like the same idiot ESPN announcer had asked for a few minutes earlier. Thankfully NASCAR didn't do that back in 1981.
Instead we had the uncertainty and nail biting over whether Petty had enough fuel (turns out he didn't), and several cars racing through their last minute pit stops, one of them sliding sideways and losing time as a result. A race track is for racing, and for people who know what they're doing when they decide to step out on the pavement. The race played itself out naturally and the result felt legitimate and satisfying.
Today it would all be very orderly, safe, predictable, and boring, followed by a gimmicky finish that insults the viewer's intelligence.
Every generation wants to bang the safety drum louder than the one before it. Unfortunately there comes a point where the sport becomes more of a parade than a competition, and as less people bother to watch, the danger that still remains has become pointless.
People often marvel about participants in dangerous endeavors of the past. It comes from passion. People had more fulfillment and enthusiasm for those activities when the events had more notoriety, uncertainty, and entertainment value.
There is a middle ground somewhere, and modern racing has overshot it.

There most certainly was "big money" involved in NASCAR at this time... That trend actually started in the mid 70s and accelerated in the late 70s into the early 80s... And that trend only continued to escalate from this time frame going forward.
Looking at race winnings from the races on the driver's racing page information page tells the story... At first the money increased a lot at Daytona, Charlotte and Talladega... That phenomena explained why some drivers in the late 70s through the mid 80s ran partial schedules... Benny Parsons, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough all ran partial schedules to win the bigger money events from that time period... It was also the last time period from the late 70s through the mid 80s where a partial schedule driver would ever win any races... By the late 1980s going forward only full time driver's won on the NASCAR race schedule. Eventually even shorter tracks like Richmond, Bristol and North Wilkesboro started paying good money to win by the late 1980s and early 1990s...
The problem in my opinion is that NASCAR became way too much like big government... Getting way too involved in rules making and trying to make everything so "equal"... This led to the teams having to spend more and more money into finding ways to make more speed in smaller and smaller increments/ways... That's .. what got things very expensive... Spending HUGE money into parts like the heads or exhaust system, wind tunnel aerodynamic testing etc etc... Plus the teams got bigger and bigger with specialized "pit crews" who just pitted the cars and did not actually work on the cars. That problem was noted by Donnie Allison in the 1998 NASCAR 50th anniversary get together with many older drivers and team owners. Watch that 4 part special and you will hear him talk about that...
In the end as the huge money continued to be brought into the sport it corrupted certain people in the sport... Which explains why tracks were bought to just shut them down.... North Wilkesboro and Rockingham.. Remember even Darlington almost lost BOTH of the races there... And was not too far from being shut down. Those individuals wanted to take those racrs away and take races to "new and bigger" venues... Because those money hungry hounds wanted more and more money... But those corrupt individuals forgot something...
North Wilkesboro, Rockingham and Darlington helped build the sport. And NASCAR in those places greatly helped those small towns economies. Eventually those people who's towns who got shut down race tracks remembered what had been done to them. This is a big reason why Charlotte motorspeedway has lost so much in attendance... And why other tracks lost so much in attendance. NASCAR had walked away from their own fan base. Thinking the fans from large sprawling cities in "suburbia" would replace the real orginal race fans and increase their fan base as well... Well NASCAR guessed wrong.. and badly so.
Time for NASCAR to get back to basics...
Cut the race schedule down.. too long to begin with.
Acknowledge they screwed up and reinvest in places like North Wilkesboro and Rockingham... Get those race tracks back up and running...
Close down Texas motorspeedway, close down California, close down Chicago...
NASCAR needs to stop acting like big government... Cut those stupid rules by like 80 percent... If not more... Quit trying to make NASCAR like IROC... No one like Marxist racing....
Start allowing real fans back into the infields of the race track.. Watch those old races... You will see exactly what I am saying here...
Make the races better by having associated events along with the races.... Great food events/contests... And country music artist being there as well. . Combine all of that... People love good food... Allow for that and have contests for best BBQ etc and allow many people to make food for those race fans. A win win there... And by having real country music artist there it could help a new artist potentially has well. Make a race weekend a bigger "event" by adding those other two parts.
The big money that started coming in bit by bit in the mid 70s and that increased from there was greatly helpful to NASCAR growth... But eventually that same big money also led to it's own downfall. . Through greed and out right bad decision making...

NASCAR were absolute fools to leave this track, and North Wilkesboro. And what did they do go to a useless track like New Hampshire. That's the worst racing I've ever seen in my life.

You should really be ashamed of yourself for the crappy stunt you pulled with the Daytona race. I’ve been loyal to you for a while and you let us all down
