I was at that race , I live just outside Blacksburg Va. . Me and my uncle used to go to the Martinsville races back then. My uncle was friends with Jabe and Ronnie Thomas, He did some parts for them out of his machine shop he owned in Christiansburg.

@@MrChristopherHaas To be honest I havent been there in years now. My uncle has since passed and like you I wouldnt pay to go see a modern Nascar race. Back when i did go there though it was a very nice , clean well taken care of track.

Understood. Modern NASCAR is a farce. And its expensive. But, back in the day, oh man. And, even though the race cars you saw on this day were all used up it was still well worth seeing. Especially for Morgan Sheppard fans like me.

Thanks to SMIFF TV ive been watching NASCAR chronologically from 1950 to middle of 1990. Its nice to take a step back and see how far NASCAR and ESPN had come from this race to 1990. Replays are nice to have lol. Its also GREAT to see UNDERDOG whoopin the fidld for once

Thanks for posting this! Back in the day if my beloved 43 car dropped out, so did I! LOL! So never saw anything after Richard got "driven thru" by the 75 car. There's a 3rd pedal under your foot Joe!!! 🤬 LOL 😆

My grandfather attended this race, he said Richard Petty got taken out early in a crash. This was the race he was talking about. He got to witness a new winner that day. An upset victory at the time.

*POINT STANDINGS and WINS before the 1981 VIRGINIA 500 (9 of 31):*
#28 Bobby Allison (1262pts with 1 win, Buick)
#11 Darrell Waltrip (-125 with 4 wins, Buick)
    #33 Harry Gant (-129, Pontiac)
    #88 Ricky Rudd (-184, Buick)
    #90 Jody Ridley (-191, Ford)
#43 Richard Petty (-203 with 2 wins, Buick)
    #2 Dale Earnhardt (-211, Pontiac)
    #75 Joe Millikan (-252, Buick)
    #15 Benny Parsons (-256, Ford)
    #44 Terry Labonte (-330, Buick)
Cale Yarborough (#27 Oldsmobile) decided to move down to a partial schedule and still won the Atlanta 500.
Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Martinsville’s case, the Spring race was the Virginia 500 while the Fall one was the Old Dominion 500.

This was the second of 2 victories for Cliff Stewart in 265 total races spanning 30 years. Jim Paschal won for him in 1962. Shepard had Richmond race won until late race malady relegated him to 4th. Youre welcome

I sure miss those old days when racing was racing and I think Nascar died the same day when Dale Earnhardt Sr died. It not the same without him

    • @joshrcbros7287
      @joshrcbros7287 4 роки тому +3

James Dillard it’s time to move on sir it’s been almost 20 years. times have changed. The racing is different but it’s still racing and many people still enjoy it a lot. It’s comments like this that turn away new fans and continue to push away others if you want it to disappear completely keep your same thought process and then u won’t have any “roundly round” racing to watch and then what will that solve.

@@joshrcbros7287 I just don't like they are putting limits on what they can due on the car's and the motors. I glad they did on the safety side but it took a long time before someone had to died. My favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt Sr and no one will replace him in my book.

Senior's tragic death most certainly hurt Nascar, but what started doing in the Sport was Junior's inability (due mostly to his head injuries) to carry on his Father's dominance of the Sport, in other words, Nascar NEEDED Junior to WIN A LOT! When that didn't happen, the Sport of Stockcar Racing's popularity diminished greatly. With that said, the infusion over the last few years of driver's Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, John Hunter Nemechek ect...has been a sorely needed shot in the arm, as the core fan's, the long-time REAL FAN'S of Stockcar Racing love having young gun drivers with last name's that are familiar to root for. Nascar is slowly crawling back out of the huge hole created by Dale Sr's tragic death 🙏 RIP
