I went to so many races back in the 80's. My first race was 1984 in Charlotte. Loved AWESOME Bill from Dawsonville. What a ride we had for all those years.

At that time Bill became only the 4th driver to win the Daytona 500 more than once in his career. The others were Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, & Bobby Allison. There are now 11 drivers that have won the race more than once. Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Michael Waltrip, & Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the others.

This was before restrictor plates ruined racing and the cars were still up on real suspension systems. You could adjust tire stagger the rear spoiler among many other things to make your car perform. Before they ruined the sport and handed out the plates to make sure Earnhardt was a God.
Agree about restrictor plates, but suspensions remained basically unchanged. Tire stagger went away with the advent of radials and Earnhardt won thirty one races - including eleven in 1987 - and three championships - including 1987 - before restrictor plates.
Wrong about restrictor plates. Far from ruining racing the restrictor plates put the speeds back under control and briefly aided the effectiveness of the draft Dave Despain notes at 1:47:00 - the disappearance of the draft is what ruined racing and as we saw the last three Indianapolis 500s when the draft is more important than handling that is what creates passing. The cars here in 1987 would have benefitted from the roof blade as well - not only with a stronger draft but also the roof blade planted the nose on the ground - the Pontiacs in particular had a problem of pushing.
Caelroigh Blunt The switchover to radials 1989-91 has been a fundamental negative to racing because it's ruined ability to pass as much as the disappearance of the draft has - radials made it about catching the car instead of racing it (Chris Economaki makes a great point about the difference in his book LET 'EM ALL GO) - my favorite example of the difference is the 1991 Michigan 400 where Earnhardt and Davey Allison fought it out for the lead for 20 straight laps and Earnhardt was throwing the car ten lengths deeper into the corners; it was one of the last Michigan races on bias-plies and he was able to race that hard because bias-plies allowed him and everyone else to do it. Radials for the most part don't.

I'm almost 59 years old as a kid I attended Ontario motor speedway 3 times as a teen I moved to Riverside in 79 so between 80 and 87 I attended more races than I can count but we were so lucky to watch men named Person Petty Yarbourough Earnhardt Elliot Jarrett Rudd Waltrip Bonnet Gant Wallace Labonte Baker Allison both Bobby and Davey Schroeder Irvan Richmond Hendrick yes Rick Hendrick and to realize years later there was a young Jimmie Johnson in attendence at that race we were so fortunate to witness in person these great names banging fenders .... Thank you 😜😜
i’m wondering how the other teams/manufacturers couldn’t look at the thunderbirds and tell they were obviously superior. just by looking at the front end you can tell they’re much more aerodynamic and probably handle better than anything else. no wonder bill elliott was constantly hauling ass at 200+mph all throughout the 80s lol
Thanks to Clyde Torkel for giving us these beautiful birds. I fell head over heals for the movie car. Then the ford teams started using these. GM countered with the Aero Coupes. It hasn’t been the same since.
One thing about it, when Bill won his two Daytona 500s, he did it with full horsepower and none of this drafting bullsheyet pu🐱🐱y restrictor plate crap!

I remember after seeing this going that was just as good as the first one, but the longer I sat on the movie the more I realized that a lot of this stuff wasn't as interesting or funny as the first one. The best part of the movie for me was violet because it was cool to see her continue as act more confidently like she did at the end of the first movie.

Just to tell you guys, Darrell Waltrip NEVER won the Firecracker/Pepsi/Coke Zero 400 or in this case the July race at Daytona. He won in IROC and Xfinity competition, the duels, Unlimited, and of course the 1989 Daytona 500. There is no way we could have unrestricted engines, someone will die or pass out due to the excessive g-forces. The plate was put there for a reason: Allison flew into the fence at Talladega, then won the last non-plate race at Daytona, and won the first ever restrictor plate race the 1988 Daytona 500. Today with the exhaust system they turn 8800 RPM's around as well, which is what they were turning even back then. This is also the second fastest Daytona 500 in the history of the race.
Excessive G-forces? Rusty Wallace didn't seem to have a problem back in 2004 when he ran an unrestricted hot lap at 'Dega, reaching 228mph going into turn 3. Sure there's danger from speeds exceeding 200 or so, but I doubt they'd be going anywhere near fast enough for that to be a problem. If a single car can do that, you'd be looking at speeds approaching 240mph. That's insane.
1mind2have4now That was a test on a closed course, he wasn't running 188 laps, just about 20 laps in 3 runs to see if they could get it to go any faster. His average speed for his fastest lap was over 217 MPH.
And I'm not sure they were trying that hard, because if they had prepared the car they way they would for a normal racing situation, Rusty could very well have run laps of 225+ MPH. And there's no way they can race like that, because if something goes wrong at that speed, the results would be even more catastrophic than what happened at LeMans in 1955. After all, Bobby Allison's car nearly went into the stands at the 1987 Winston 500 when shrapnel from his own blown engine blew out his right rear tire at about 210. Add another 20 MPH to that, and the cars would probably clear the catch fencing, even though it's higher than it was then.

Those mid 80's T Birds were so fast NASCAR had to let the GM teams run sloped rear windows that weren't even equipped from the factory.
