WarioWare overtaking Wario Land is as insane as the Mario Sports series overtaking 2D Mario.
Fr
It's like Rabbids replacing Rayman
@@randocalzone8772 FR
@@randocalzone8772 That's exactly what I thought. Rest in peace sweet prince. Your owners hate you but fans will always love you.
If there’s ever a new Wario Land entry than for heaven’s sake Wario invite your partner Waluigi as your player 2 if there's a two player story mode. Since I feel bad for this purple scarecrow underdog.
@seasonembrace3624
If Daisy can appear in an official mainline Super Mario game, then there might be hope that Waluigi could appear in a future game with Wario. :)
Waluigi only exists in the sports mini game universe. Separate from mainline games and nowhere near as important as other side characters.
@@OdaSwifteye That's why I hope Nintendo changes on that. Even generic Toad got his own series I think. (Captain_Toad).
@@seasonembrace3624 Waluigi was only made to give Wario a partner in the sports games. Nintendo doesn't see a propose for him outside of that.
It does seem a little unfair on Nintendo’s behalf to give Toadette who made her debut in Mario Kart Double Dash simply to be Toad’s partner but was given more love by them simply because for what I assume is because they made her, Which feels a little petty on Nintendo's part.
my first wario game was wario land 3 (still love it) and as a kid I always assumed that Wario does not get really hurt by enemies, cause he himself is a villain. You know, the kind of child logic like invisable people can see other invisible people XD
That makes sense in a way. Isn’t that also why Nabbit isn’t able to be hurt in 2D Mario games, because he started as an antagonist?
The moment you introduced Pizza Tower with Oregano Mirage, i knew you're a man of culture
I remember that back in the early-to-mid 2010s, I read the article about Wario Land: Shake It on the Mario Wiki (NOT Wikia/Fandom), when that article pointed out the fact that Wario Land 4 & Shake It marks an extremely long gap of new Wario Land games between 2001 & 2008... Boy, did they not see anything yet! 😂
Wario Land 4 gets much more difficult and stressful in Hard mode, and especially Super Hard mode.
Super Hard Mode is pretty much a Kaizo-esque game.
You gotta try that out.
i would also mention that pizza tower recived a free update that added a New playable character with different moveset, it adds even more replayability to the game
The real problem with standard Wario games not returning is that Nintendo won't let go of the Wario-Ware Minigame series. They're short but are meant to be played in short bursts. Now he's in Smash Bros, Mario Kart minigame hell and odd extra spin-off's
They don't have to. Saying you can't have both is like saying we can't have mainline Mario anymore because we have Mariokart
Yeah I was gonna say we had Mario Wonder, Paper Mario, Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi. Nintendos brought back every form of RPG Mario despite mainline Mario's existence. So I don't think Warioware existing is an issue.
We can have both. WarioWare and Wario Land’s teams are different. They can exist together
@@sahaprocks7751 Wario was created because R and D 1 runout of ideas for Mario Land, so Wario Land was created so that Nintendo can have Mario like games on handheld. However R and D 1 was shutdown, so Wario Land can't be made in house anymore.
Wario Shake was made because programer of 6 Golden Coins Takahiro Harada asked Good Feel to make another one. Most likely because Nintendo needed more time to make New Super Mario Bros. Wii. So Nintendo no longer needs Wario, now that Nintendo has an easier time making 2d Mario.
@@orangeslash1667 I'm not buying any of this theory. Nintendo had no new 2D Mario on Switch until 2023 and they didn't get anyone to make Wario Land for them to fill the gap.
Super well done man!! I'm glad the algorithm blessed me today with this one.
My first and only Wario game was Wario Land 4 -- I just picked it up from a bargain bin and vividly remember it being so strange and whimsical as a kid. It was so unhinged and different from anything else at the time, and I loved it!
Those dominoes still haunt my dreams, though...
Anyway, you've done a great job cataloguing the series! Keep up the good work man. Much love.
Yeah very similar with me and the original Wario Land, random flea market buy and just loved how unhinged the game was compared to Mario. 4 is really great :D
Thanks for watching!

I hope after the popularity of Pizza Tower Nintendo maybe recognizes the need for a new entry in the wario land series
Hey! I'm a game dev, here! I'm not making a Wario-Like exactly, but I am featuring a lot of aspects of one in the Metroidvania-ish Paper Mario clone I've been working on for a while!
Funnily enough, I've seen Wario Land 3 referred to as a "Wariovania". Not sure if that will catch on the same way Metroidvania or even "Wario-Like" will.
I pray for your success.
Fun fact: The developers of Pizza Tower and Antonblast are friends, and Peppino is featured in one of Anton's previous games: Antonball Deluxe
Anton also has art that appears in the background of the sewer level, Oh Shit! in Pizza Tower.
The great thing about the Wario formula is that it doesn't have to be exclusive to platformers. Treasure Tech (a Doom mod) and Captain Wayne are FPS games that take various degrees of inspiration from Wario, and with some creativity you can Wario up all sorts of genres. How about a Wario style kart racer, where instead of picking up power-ups you get all sorts of effects out of crashing into stage hazards and other players?
Captain Wayne looks crazy. It looks like Wario and Serious Sam mixed together. Thanks for the recommend!
Is Captain Wayne a Wario-Like? No doubt it looks really cool, and it definitely has that "punk" edge that Wario Land kind of has that got cranked up with Pizza Tower, but aside from that, I'm having trouble placing what else about it is "Wario-like".
Wario land was a huge part of my childhood. WL2 was the first game I ever played extensively on my own. It was a great game for a beginner like me at that age, since you couldn't die in it and you would only lose small bits of progress for messing up.
Weirdly, the game that would interest me the most, if Nintendo ever made one, is a sequel to Wario World. I think that formular has a lot of untapped potential. I'd love if they turned Wario's destructiveness up to 11 and made huge parts of each stage completely destructable. Not just a few boxes here and there, but entire walls, parts of buildings, boulders and trees and cars and anything you could imagine.
Being destructive in games can be so much fun and I'd love to see a game where Wario can pick up a car and piledrive it into a building to make it crumble to pieces.
Imagine if you could rip trees out of the ground and chuck 'em. Or fire hydrants, mailboxes and street lights.
Imagine you could rip the anchor out of a ship and throw it like a yo-yo from its chain.
Imagine you could simply grab things and keep them in your hand as a way to modify your punch. Like, if you grab a rock, it does more damage. If you grab an enemy, punching with it will knock coins out of it. If you punch while holding a torch, you can set things on fire. If you punch while holding a block of ice, you can freeze enemies, which you can then shatter into pieces.
Usually when you grab things in Wario games, you can only throw them. But this way, simply picking up stuff could be ways to make clever puzzles and reward experimenting with your surroundings.
My hat goes off to you random internet man
you're the fattest wario land fan i've seen on small corners of youtube and i'm not judging by actual size
Nintendo didn't make wario world. Treasure made that game.
For Wario World you could say that it's short and sweet and it doesn't overstay it's welcome, it doesn't add extra stuff that makes the game go on forever.
7:14, I mean, Nintendo hasn't completely ignored the Virtual Boy. It's been referenced in several Nintendo games; Luigi's Mansion 3, the Labor VR thing, Tomodachi Life, and probably some others.
Right but those are harmless references that go over the heads of most. It’d be a different story if at anything where there was a marketing budget involved they were like “hey guys the virtual boy games are available for purchase! What’s that? you don’t know what a virtual boy is? Well In 1995…” just don’t see that happening.
@@tildeshamblesI guess that's a fair point
I think a new Wario land could do well if it was marketed as “Mario bros on crack”
It also would be neat to have a Shantae & Wario crossover with there pirate captain antagonists teaming up. Just an idea 🤷♂️
I think the problem is that Nintendo lacks a developer to make the games. Nintendo R&D1, the original developer for the Wario Land series from the original to Wario Land 4, dissolved in 2004 due to corporate re-structuring. Wario Land: Shake It! is the only Wario Land game to be developed by a different developer, Good-Feel, who also developed Princess Peach: Showtime!. So in the end, it really comes down to whether or not Good-Feel wants to make another Wario Land game, or if Nintendo can find another developer to make a new Wario Land game, similar to how they found a new developer to develop Mario & Luigi: Brothership after AlphaDream's bankruptcy.
43:30 Anton has had in my opinion a very memorable voice ever since Antonball Deluxe. It's in a way a bit surprising you say that since he is constantly yelling in the demos
You've got yourself a new subscriber. You deserve so much more attention and views than you're getting. I hope the algorithm blesses you with a huge bump soon.
Thanks, I really appreciate the kind words it a lot. The algorithm has been pretty hit and miss for me but such is the grind lol.
Wario Land on Virtual Boy is ironically a great master-piece; VB may not be a memorable system, but game was singlehandedly a standout. Though my favorite in the franchise has been a tossup between Wario Land 3 and 4. Both absolutely amazing titles. But I do hope we get another brand new Wario land game for sure.
Agreed. I was really amazed at the quality that VB Wario Land had given the time period it was from. Had Nintendo decided to not ditch the VB and actually bring it to Australia with a tour like they did with other consoles back then I would have had a similar moment like when I saw Mario 64 for the first time.
Oh, the Virtual Boy was memorable alright, just in a completely different way.
I grew up with Wario Land 2, 3 and 4.
In fact, Wario Land 4 was the reason I begged my parents to get me a GBA.
Had a great time with all of these, but 3 is my favorite, and the one I played the most.
I just really loved the metroidvania system, of how you get treasures to change old levels, the way you effect the world, and the new powerups - it was a lot of fun.
And eventually I played Wario Land 1 on an emulator. Loved that game as well. Wish Inhad the chance to grow up with it too.
Master of disguise feels like an educational game, the music even uses GM midi samples so that’s how you know the budget was very very low
lol now that you say that, I can’t unhear it XD
I've played a bit of Virtual Boy Wario Land on my 3DS with the Virtual Boy emulator Red Viper which takes advantage of the 3DS's 3D to simulate the Virtual Boy's 3D and it's definitely the definitive way to play it along with every VB game in my opinion.
Couldn’t agree more!
Pretty sure there's also a VB emulator for Oculus if you have one of those
@@evdestroy5304 I don't have one but I do plan to buy one eventually 👍
Forgot to mention how princess Shokora should never come back like Pauline, it would make no sense since she just disappeared and I’d like our beloved Neko princess to stay underrated and unknown.
What about Queen Merelda from Shake It?
She’s from the Shake Dimension so it wouldn’t make sense for her to come back either as well.
But man do I miss Captain Syrup… she had the best redesign in Shake It, only us to never see her again, at this point I wouldn’t mind her showing up in Warioware, Cractus from Wario Land 4 showed up in Move It in one of Kat & Ana’s cutscenes.
Smash Ultimate has like a dozen Warioware songs but only one Wario Land song, and no Wario Land stage
I’d love for the Virtual Boy wario land to get remade out of that hideous red. I was one of the few owners of the virtual boy growing up, and Wario Land on it was amazing.
Oddly enough, I only ever played the original Game Boy and Virtual Boy games, and afterwards the WarioWare series. So while I played many games with Wario in them, none of them were "Wario-style" games.
Nintendo has acknowledged the virtual boy in games like tamodachi life
Theory: Wario is an alter created by Bowser view of Mario
Just stop.
I've played Pizza Tower but I kinda slept on it. Been meaning to try playing it again.
Go for it! It's a great game and they recently updated it with a 2nd playable character. So there's even more replay value now.
the story you tell seems very similar to mine
gotta love wario and his games
I played VB Wario Land through an emulator I got through my modded quest 2, probably the most faithful way to play VB games.
Omg i love all these games
A personal hope is the next Wario Land starting as a treasure hunting expedition to fund the next Warioware which gives an excuse to have the others tag along, even if only for a stage or two.
Or they could even do a Warioware RPG since there’s now a Mario RPG Renaissance with SMRPG, Paper Mario TTYD and the recently announced Mario & Luigi Brothership all coming back within the span of a year!
Another Wario-like for you - Treasure Tech. It's basically Doom, but Wario Land.
Wario Land 3 is my favourite game of all time. The others are good too, but that one is the top. Wrote an essay on why it's the most unique metroidvania ever made, then did a reading of it on my channel. Actually created a design document for a Wario-Like myself, which also has a going-into-the-background mechanic but with a twist. Unlike Pizza Tower or Anton Blast, it would be more like Wario Land 3 than 4. If you're going to do another video about Wario Land, talk about 3 is the secret Metroid game between Super and Fusion. You can see a number of design elements from Wario Land 3 in Metroid Fusion if you know what to look for, so I hope you watch the reading of the essay I did and consider making such a video.
On a side note, I still can't believe Nintendo released the virtual boy.
2:17 fr, he looked very crazy, specially in sml2 and wl4
6:31 the VB was actually meant to be lighter and portable initially, at the time there were concerns by conservative parents that processing units could emit radiation, then the designers cased the internals with heavy metal casing, which led it to become heavy, however there was a solution by giving it shoulder supports, but was turned down, because there were also concerns that kids could walk in random places with the headset on, and thus the chicken leg design was used
7:05 there was actually plans to have a vb wario land rerelease for 3ds, but was turned down
8:20 lmaoooo the red ain't that bad, specially in real hardware
15:50 absolutely agreed, that's exactly the reason why people don't like wl3 really much
19:03 interestinly enough, medamayaki used a method to get those voices in within small storage called setence mixing, which became popular over the years
20:53 apparently both wario world and land 4 share the same sets of voice clips, but wl4 is compressed and crazier, the voice clips most likely came from camelot's n64 mario spinoff games
30:26 tbh shake it's presentation was great, but it had its faults, wario was lankier than usual, and he was expressive as his 3d appearances outside of world (which means he wasn't) and on top of that most of the backgrounds in the stages were meh for me
and btw, a remaster could actually be possible because in the japanese trailer for the game, a high quality version of his walk animation appeared, uncompressed versions of other animations might be somewhere at nintendo's vault
another fact: wario land shake it was initially supposed to be 3d with cel shading, as evidenced with unused graphics of few enemies
36:49 HIS NAME IS SHINESPARK
37:46 truly, but at the same time i didn't really like p rank for one reason, there were many cool ideas scrapped through development and many of them wouldn't work with the p rank system
38:43 the toppins are not necessary, it's just for progression and points
40:18 interestinly enough, pizza tower's artstyle uses colors only from wario land 2
41:02 well i have some news, recently there has been leaks of the pt private server that revealed there'd be a mr stick update along with floor -1, along with 2 new games (pizza tower: an alien stole my pizza and noise's big break) with noise's big break being confirmed with a cryptic teaser in pizza tower twitter account and the noise update being leaked earlier in HD
44:27 i absolutely doubt it will come back, star fox is still dead and f zero only got a 99 game that is bound to die and kill f zero again, the only reasons why stuff such as pmttyd remake, smrpg remake and m&l RPG brothership exist, is because it's still the mario IP, and experimentation with mario has only come far as that, there's no interest in a new wario land game by nintendo or their 2nd parties
aside that even if nintendo made a new wario land game, it would be very bland
Great job. Wario looks similar to sonic with speed and force.
Wario Land mostly existed in a time when there weren’t many 2D Mario games
When 2D Mario returned Nintendo saw less reason to make Wario Land games and eventually stopped after Shake It
With Nintendo currently going through a phase of remakes / bringing back old series, I'd love to see a new entry, or a remake bundle of the first four games.
i love the filter you have over the Game Boy footage
Thanks! It all comes from the analogue pocket. It lets you apply filters to make it look like a close enough replica of the original devices screen. Pretty neat.
Great video man 👍 Thank you
Wario Land 1, 2, 3 and VB have very memorable (and overlooked) soundtracks
Cool video! I probably had some of the same experience with games growing up, and as a result I've also been missing Wario Land for a while. Not to throw shade on Wario Ware, which does have some games I like a lot, but that's not my favorite kinda Wario game or even take on the character - It was, for example, kinda frustrating to get Wario in Smash Bros. and have him act more like Wario Ware than Wario Land. I didn't wanna have Wario come in and fart, you know, I wanted him to come in and throw that poor explorer from Wario Land 4 at someone. Or get set on fire and run until he burned up.
Wario Land 2 and 3(as well as Metroid 2, which I believe were the same guys) were definitely my favorite platformers on the game boy. As a kid I didn't have my own TV or anything, so having a handheld was great and I spent a lot of time digging into the Warios. Having said that, when I got a Game Boy Advance, I never looked back at the game boy. Wario Land 4, Metroid Fusion, I think those games blew their game boy prequels out of the water. It was incredible to get a new handheld and find such fun, improved takes on games that I already liked. Felt like the devs were finally freed from the constraints of that old gray brick and used all that new power for what it was worth, which resulted in games that felt very fresh despite both being the fourth in their series.
Did you voice Wario in this video? If so, EXCELLENT! WAHNDERFUL! GOOD LUCK with future videos!
Yup, the bootleg Wario voice in the video is my own lol.
As much as I like the WarioWare games, I never felt like they should replace Wario Land as Wario's main series of games. After all, I feel like there's a side to Wario you get out of Wario Land that you don't out of WarioWare, like yeah, he's a goofball, but he's also kind of a badass too, so seeing him beat up enemies by charging into them and using his girth and beefy arms to crush whoever's in his way, that's just really satisfying to see. The Wario Land games felt like a good mix of both sides of Wario, showcasing how tough he is while also showing him as the butt of jokes. My hope is that someone, somewhere within Nintendo remembers and likes the Wario Land series enough to try and kickstart development of a new Wairo Land. As cool as the rise of Wario-Likes are, I still really like Wario specifically and would love to see a return to form for him.
Speaking of Wario-Likes, though, the fact that there are an increasing amount of games based on Wario Land makes me very happy. Pizza Tower is absolutely fantastic, one of my favorite games of all time even, and ANTONBLAST is looking to be another great one, but believe it or not there are still plenty of other Wario Land-inspired games out there, both currently released and in-development. Here's a list of the ones I've found, if you want to check them out:
-Sugary Spire, a Pizza Tower fan-game that's essentially Pizza Tower but if the roles of Peppino and The Noise were reversed
-Antonball Deluxe from Summitsphere, a precursor to ANTONBLAST that's basically a unique combination of Wario Land, the Mario Bros. arcade game, and Breakout
-Treasure Tech from SuperUltra64, a DOOM mod with gameplay elements from Wario Land 4. A full game, Treasure Tech Land, is planned after Treasure Tech is finished
-Duke Dashington from Adventure Islands, where Wario Land 4's dashing and escape sequences is formatted into a room-by-room 10-second puzzle challenge
-Shovel Knight: King of Cards from Yacht Club Games, where you play as King Knight, who uses a shoulder bash that I feel must be a reference to Wario Land...
-Tembo the Badass Elephant from Game Freak, in which the game's director, James Turner, cites Wario Land as one of his main influences for the game
-Susan Taxpayer from Punkitt, takes the Wario Land formula and put it in a white-collar office setting
If you happen to be aware of other Wario-Like games in development or out there already, I'd love to know!
When you make a comment about a sound effect, blatantly show it after the comment.
you forgot about AntonBall
That game has a lot of charm especially if you loved the GBA era of Nintendo games
My first wario land was the virtual boy game. After playing 1 And 4 the virtual boy game is the best.
We need wario land series to return and they should just let someone else be the protagonist of wario ware so wario can go back to his treasure hunting adventures we need a new wario land
That stupid. Warioware is for wario fans. You can't replace him whar wrong whit you?
Virtual Boy Wario Land is genuinely my favorite Wario Land (although I have not played much of 1 through 3)
Yeah, VB wario land really surprised me by how good it was. For the other gameboy games, I'd recommend 2 and 3 as that's where all the cartoon fun is. 1 will just feel like a slower, less detailed VB Wario Land if you play it now. It's fun for sure, but not sure if it will hold up over the love for VB Wario.
This Channel is suuuuuuuper underrated! Nice Video!
Thanks! really appreciate that!
I fear the main issue with Wario land is how they did everything you can do with it.
Any more change to the formula gives you the Wario likes, which honestly, aren't at all like 2-4.
I miss Wario land too I remember when I play the first game is amazing an indigo submit to the the best character Nintendo character
I never got to finish Wario Master of Disguise because I had a faulty touch screen lol
To tell you just HOW LITTLE Nintendo cares about this franchise, when they took down their stuff from Vimm, they left all games from the series except for Mario Land 3.
I don't think it's really accurate to say the first Wario Land was just called Super Mario Land 3 to piggyback off the success of previous games. If you look at the game itself just as a game, ignoring the character sprite you happen to be playing as, it's incredibly similar to Super Mario Land 2 (as you pointed out) such that it's obviously the sequel to that game, at least in my opinion. It still follows mechanically the 2D Mario formula almost to a T, the biggest deviation it has is just the existence of Wario's new dash attack and...that's kinda it. It still pretty much plays almost exactly like a Mario game, especially Mario Land 2, just a bit slower-paced (unless you hold up while jumping, which basically just enables sprint-jumping where you move faster and jump a block higher like in other 2D Mario games, just without regular sprinting itself). Not to mention the story itself is directly continuing off the second Mario Land, which itself was directly building off the first Mario Land's story, making them all an interconnected trilogy narratively (which is rare for Mario) about the rivalry between Mario and Wario that ultimately ends with Wario finally getting his own castle and no longer coveting Mario's one.
And even getting to the part where we're not literally playing as Mario, we're still playing as "Bad Mario" (which is what Wario means) and he's still an incredibly similar character to Mario, not to mention he's the major new character introduced in the game this is a sequel to, and from the beginning he was shown to basically be a "Bad Mario" who has similar abilities, being able to use the same kind of power-ups and go small when he takes damage and all (which remains true in Mario Land 3/Wario Land, heck on the subject of power-ups the classic Starman is still in the game and functions identically to other 2D Mario games), so him being playable in the next game is hardly a massive departure enough to make the next game not a proper sequel. Would Luigi U not be a Mario game because you're instead playing as a similar guy with slightly different abilities, aka Luigi, and Mario himself is nowhere to be found? I don't think so.
And pretty much NONE of this is true of the later Wario Land games from Wario Land 2 onwards that don't have the Mario subtitle, they made massive changes to the gameplay such that they play very differently and don't have the Mario formula aspects mechanically much at all that the first Wario Land does, other than Wario Land 3 bringing back Warp Pipes I guess. Wario Land 1 (and the VB title) is the only one that still plays almost exactly like a Mario game in most ways, is very different in that respect from the later Wario Land games, is directly connected to the other Mario Land games narratively, and is the only one with the Mario Land subtitle (or main title in Japan, the names are swapped there). Meaning it seems clear to me that it IS really Super Mario Land 3 as a game, but its unique aspects it introduced and Wario as a character would also serve as the inspiration and starting ground for a new spin-off series that would develop its own kind of 2D platformer gameplay different from 2D Mario and the first Wario Land, and both of those things can be true at once.
So analyzing the game mechanically and narratively, both in comparison to Super Mario Land 2 and more broadly to the 2D Mario formula, and the later Wario Land games that would follow, I can hardly say the "Super Mario Land 3" title is just a marketing slap on but rather that it is truly meant to be the third and final game in that series. And I don't think the fact that you're playing as "Bad Mario" instead of actual Mario is enough alone to say it's not, when talking about the game itself that's not a majorly important factor (otherwise Luigi U also wouldn't be a proper Mario game, or a game that plays nothing like a Mario game but you still play as Mario apparently is, the character sprite is not the most important aspect to classify whole games by).
Wow...I can never stop rambling for WAY too long, my bad lol.
Same thing with Super Mario World being called Super Mario Brothers 4, now that was DEFINITELY not just to piggyback for marketing purposes, that game is OBVIOUSLY Super Mario Brothers 4 and the sequel to Mario 3 in every respect and was clearly intended to be from the very start of development. Just look at it, there's nothing in there to argue otherwise, it's clearly the 4th game. That's just an accurate title it had for most of development and they just dropped the subtitle at least in the West very very late near the end.
Yoshi's Island is definitely the most different of these 3 games and easiest to say was piggybacking with the title, and takes a lot longer to argue is truly part of the series. Though it was called Super Mario Bros. 5 in development and both Miyamoto and Tezuka have maintained its core Mario status long after other Yoshi games came out, specifically stating that it is part of the series but the later Yoshi games aren't and are their own thing, and there are a ton of unnoticed aspects of Yoshi's Island that either come from all 4 previous SMB games (including World there as established) or would continue to be present in later Mario games, including the NSMB games but even to an extent the 3D games, mainly Mario 64, but still it is the hardest one to argue because it DOES play very differently in many respects.

You forgot antonBALL which is breakout but you’re wario. (It also has peppino as a guest character!)
Virtual Boy Wario Land is a such a huge Monkey Paw, coming out on a doomed handheld/console or _whatever_ that wasn’t going to be a guaranteed success, honestly VB Wario Land should’ve been moved to the SNES which was already a big success (that’s what I would change if i can go back to 1995 haha lol), and it would’ve likely made Wario Land a mainstay franchise, a bit off topic but I also wish we got a Super Kid Icarus on SNES.
Virtual Boy Wario Land is the best game on the Virtual boy that was released in the US. If you ever get a chance to play a real virtual boy, it is a very neat piece of equipment. You just have to make sure you actually adjust the focus and interocular distance right, because not adjusting that when you start is a 1 way trip to migraine town.
It's definitely understandable why the system didn't take off, it is still a very interesting piece of tech to play with.
I hope I do get to try a real VB one day. Though the odds aren't good as the only way to get one is to import one since they're non existent locally and yeah the cost of sending anything to Australia + how expensive the VB would be and then a game on top... It'd be a luxury collector buy for sure. Maybe one day if this youtube thing ever kicks off lol.
I completely skipped Super Mario World as a kid cause my SNES came bundled with Donkey Kong Country. I probably would’ve sought it out had it been named Super Mario Bros 4 over here, I could barely tell the difference between a land and world and I didn’t have any Nintendo Powers cause they cost way more than other video game magazines.
I mean DKC is pretty goated. Skipping world for DKC is perfectly acceptable I think.
If nintendo has done anything it's they partially listen to their fans.
"We want a new Mario RPG"
REMAKE!
"We didn't like sticker star can we get a game that like TTYD with new partners and a story and everything."
NO PROBLEM SAY NO MORE JUST STOMACH THESE 2 OTHER GAMED WERE CONTRACTED TO MAKE AND SIT TIGHT....

"OK nintendo we really think your just hearting what you wanna hear at this point...but can we get some love for the Wario Land Series?"

The Wario fanbase isn’t nearly as vocal as the Paper Mario fanbase

WarioLand 3 is underrated as fuck tbh
Yeah I'm not sure if it's just me, but I really don't remember 3 being talked about back in the day amongst my circle of friends. I remember talking about 1,2 and 4 and was surprised about learning about an existence of a 3. The game's really good and I was glad when they put it on NSO.
@@tildeshambles Yeah it’s the first one I played back on 3DS and thanks to its unique structure and atmosphere, despite being on GBC, it‘s still my fav
fr, many people don't like it since it's not fast like wl4
I miss Wario Land too. Specifically 1 and 2 are my favorites.
3 I care less for because they tried to combine Metroid style progression with linear stage design, and also I don't like how a lot of Wario Land 3 is "we can't hurt you so we'll waste your time if you make a tiny mistake".
4 and Shake It are fine I guess. They're cool games for their own things, and so are successors like Pizza Tower, but they aren't really what I want from Wario Land.
I don't suppose it matters much. Nintendo isn't likely to bring Wario Land back in any form. So they'll never have to worry about what kind of Wario Land to bring back.
Oh and I totally forgot about Wario Land Virtual Boy and Wario World. But in my defense, so has Nintendo. (3DS was the perfect system for Virtual Boy Virtual Console and they just whiffed. Okay thanks Nintendo guess I'll sail the 7 seas for a ROM and use an emulator instead of buying a copy from you)
I _really_ forgot about Wario Master of Disguise. I've never even played that one
we all do
As far as the Wii and DS era goes, that's the time when I, and anecdotally plenty of people who also grew up on Nintendo, got frustrated with their new direction and started getting different consoles. Not that there aren't some great games on the Wii, but Nintendo went from having a similarly powered console that had a lot of unique cool games to having an unerpowered, even SD console that saddled all of its games with wiimote shaking gimmicks. Or, in the case of the DS, screen touching. And that's besides trying to sell games to the casual Wii bowling audience, which I guess is fine for them but I wasn't into all that.
Personally I was so annoyed that I didn't buy either the Wii U or 3DS - and considering at least the Wii U's sales, again, I wasn't alone.
I've come around on Nintendo since the gimmicky stuff is all optional this time around on the Switch, even if its underpowered nature is still frustrating - both in terms of running their own games well, and the Switch not getting any of the cool, big third party releases, like Devil May Cry V or Elden Ring. It would be awesome if we could get another banger Wario Land on it or its successor, but it seems pretty unlikely. All those developers that made the clasic games are so old and split up. These devs used to make both the handheld Metroid and Wario games(including Ware) - but these days, both those franchises are being made by different studios entirely.
It would take someone with specialized interest coming in and breathing new life into it, or outsourcing it to a different studio. Like Metroid Prime or Metroid Dread, they could turn out fun, but they would almost certainly not be like ol' Wario Land. As a matter of fact, Wario Land Shake It was made by Good-Feel, and I definitely think it fits their mold: Games with impressive, charming art styles that are way too simple and dull for anyone over, like, 7. Maybe a different developer could make a more exciting entry though. I think Mercury Steam making a Wario Land next would be pretty funny, but I think Next Level Games have an even better track record with how they handled the Punch-Out! an Luigi's Mansion sequels.
I'm hyped about the wariolikes too! I haven't played Pizza Tower yet 'cause this rinky-dink tablet couldn't run even that game well, but I look forward to eventually playing it, as well as Antonblast.
I would prefer a Wario World sequel
Nice essay.

Hey youre wario voice is top notch!
Whahahahahaaa
Lol thanks. That's one thing I didn't mention in the video, I like the character so much I started doing Wario voices when I would play Mariokart or Mario Party with friends. As bootleg as it may be, it works XD.
Play it on a virtual boy. I bet u havent.
Why Wario World was weird? It was made by Treasure and not nintendo.
I hate Warioware and love warioland
Don't expect Wario Land to return anytime soon, especially now that we have Super Mario Brothers Wonder. Besides, Nintendo actually ruined Wario Land with Wario: Master of Disguise which was made by a shovelware company.
probably, but I'm more than happy with Pizza Tower and Antonblast taking the reigns.
@@tildeshambles Pizza Tower & Antonblast are pathetic attempts to uphold the legacy of a series whose reputation has been tarnished permanently by Nintendo.
@@Austinator0630jeez, chill. I‘d also prefer the series to come back but these games are pretty cool as well
master of disguise was more so of a spinoff than anything, what i'd say that actually killed wario would be the death of r&d1, notice how every game after wario land 4 & the first warioware were actually made by other companies, wario world was made by treasure, warioware touched & twisted by intelligent systems, master of disguise by suzak, wario land shake it by goodfeel inc.
what i'd say that was actually the nail in the coffin was wario land shake it, it had great marketing along with one youtube trailer that messed with the UI, however due to wario land shake it being released along with smash brawl, which was more known and hyped at the time, wario land shake it ended up being foreshadowed, resulting in low sales, and therefore killing any interest by second party companies on the wario land IP
so chances are, there's no 2nd or 3rd party company interested on the wario land ip, or nintendo's licensing nowadays might be bullcrap (the fact that cadence of hyrule exists is beyond me, despite being done by an indie studio)
@@ssg-eggunner In a way, Wario: Master of Disguise ruined Wario Land thanks to being a 2d puzzle platformer on a handheld starring wario. This game confused consumers about Wario Land.
