[Corrections posted 10 hours after upload]: Well we said at 38:30 that we probably made some errors somewhere and y'all would point them out in comments. Y'all did, so here's two corrections. In the video we say the Shiren the Wanderer sub-series began on Satellaview (referring to 1995's BS Shiren the Wanderer: Save Surala). Correction: it actually started with 1995's Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer on Super Famicom. We also said Metal Slader Glory's cartridge was 8 megabytes. Correction: it was actually 8 megabits, which is equal to only 1 megabyte. Apologies for errors.

I can’t help but imagine that if the N64 DD made it overseas, it’d probably face ridicule due to it still not having much data. I could see the N64 port of RE2 and Conker’s Bad Fur Day being released on there if it did come over there. What with both games being 64 MB.
For multiplats games, the extra space would have been a huge advantage, even if it wasn't on a par with the CD. Many N64 multiplats suffer in 16MB cartridges at best, 64MB seems huge by comparison, albeit, some shorts loading times.
It was probably ridiculed in Japan too, the thing came out in late 1999! Probably way to late to make a splash, even if there had been a killer app. A couple months later the Playstation 2 released, not to mention the Dreamcast was out for over a year.

It isn't discussed in the video but the DD was intended to be much more than a "mail-order only addon." It got reduced to that after YEARS of delays and game cancellations/cartridge ports. The hardware was essentially finalized at N64's launch but they never had the base hardware sales numbers to justify launching a big add-on.
The interesting thing about Kimba and Lion King is, if you actually compare the two franchises, they don't share any similarities at all. There was some inspiration, Simba being named after Kimba (though Simba might have been a word that meant something else in the culture Lion King was adapted from, which Kimba might've been named after too) but the Lion King movie and Kimba are two completely different things. The pictures and stuff you see on the internet comparing the two are actually greatly misinformed and take scenes from Kimba completely out of context (and from projects that came out after Lion King) to make the comparisons. If you actually watch Kimba, you realize that it is absolutely nothing like Lion King.
Bro, they literally were going to name Leo Simba when dubbing the show but then they never did because, and I quote, "that's just too generic" since it was the Swahili word for lion.
I remember seeing Nintendo Power articles about Mario 128 and thinking it was going to be super cool. Same thing with 64 DD in general, the infamous Earthbound 64 sections in Nintendo Power hyped people up so much.
Perhaps the reason we had the two first Hamtaro games for gameboy (Tottoko Hamutarou) comes from the "Cabbage" Project, since the first Hamtaro game is basically a virtual pet in your gameboy with a "Social engagement" touch, and the second game is more like an Adventure game. Both games also had Miyamoto and other Nintendo EAD devs participation with Pax Softonica, wich also lead to bring us Tomodachi Collection in the future.

More like it getting delayed to oblivion. I am pretty sure a number of games were already shifted to cartridge (or cancelled entirely) before the 64DD even came out.
The n64dd is kinda sad, like they put so much riding on it that it makes me wonder why the n64 even used cartridges at all, and not only the floppy disks. I wonder how things would have been if the n64DD was the main way to play games on it and not just an add-on.
@@PaperBanjo64 The reasons behind the DD's delays are covered in this video's part 2. To answer your question though -- no probably not, it likely would've come out in '97 at the latest.
Cartridge is faster though; games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time would be quite different on floppy disk. The Expansion Pak would also be a requirement for any game to reduce the load from the floppy. Funnily enough, without the 64DD, games like Animal Crossing and Majora's Mask wouldn't even exist, as they track the progress of the game in real time. The fact that these games work on a cartridge the way they do is fascinating.
“Miyamoto said these maker games were like dropping you in a field with nothing but a stick to play with, and you had to make your own fun. Wait, that sounds boring as hell, doesn’t it.” Mate you literally just described Minecraft
Fair point but the "drop you in a field with nothing but a stick" was referring to Mario Artist, which potential 64DD buyers could see wasn't anything like Minecraft. If the 64DD had Minecraft as a launch title, I imagine things would've gone differently.

Hal is extremely tight lipped about Kirby GameCube. There's mention of it in the Iwata Asks for Kirby Return to Dream Land, in which the team reveals they worked on THREE 3D Kirby games before finally starting Return to Dream Land. Masahiro Sakurai's video on Kirby Air Ride also reveals that he wasnt initially supposed to be involved with that game but had to step in because the team was struggling. I wouldn't be surprised if Hal struggled in general after Sakurai left, especially since the director of Dream Land 2, 3, and 64 appears to have left around the same time.

@@DJIVision Eh, fair enough. I was just saying that Minecraft is a similar premise since the first time you boot up the game iirc, you are put in an open field with I *think* a pickaxe or other tool to start building stuff.
As a proud owner of a 64DD (and longtime fan of Hard4Games), this is immensely enjoyable
Excellent video with a whole wealth of information, one thing I would suggest is timestamps with game titles so that people can navigate through the video if they want to watch certain parts again or skip some of them. Looking forward to part 2!
The problem of course was all the delays. If it came out as planned it would have actually served a purpose.
When the words "I mated with 5 females" showed up on screen, it reminded me of how I mated with 0 females in both video games and in real life
That's really sad, dude. I mate with females in video games all the time.
you should look for better games, then. May I recommend heavily modded Skyrim?
its crazy how similar "cabbage" is to what eventually became the choa garden on sonic adventure 2
I had posted a video of DT Lords of Genomes on UA-cam. Yesterday, an international viewer introduced me to this video. I enjoyed it very much because it explained in detail the process of DT BLOOD MASTERS development up to the cessation of development, with documents from that time.
This is the first time I have watched a video from your channel. It was very interesting and I look forward to your next video.
Thanks Houch :) How did you like Lords of Genomes?
海外ニキ!! 🤭
@@DJIVision It was a very interesting card game. It is similar to Magic the Gathering rules. When connected to the unreleased 64DD version, a trick was provided to allow for additional cards to be used. Analysis of the Game Boy version shows unused dots and text.
We love your work here at RetroShell, keep up the good work, we will continue to feature your videos on our newsletter. Keep up the quality content!
33:37 I never expected to see a clip from a Game Sack video appear in a Did you know gaming video with Joe's face appearing in it too.
Game Sack'll be shouted out in part 2. I spoke to him while writing this DYKG video (to ask if he minded me using this footage of his).
Joe is one of those guys that has never been a "main character" online but manages to pop up in a lot of places.
His Final Fantasy song was a favorite of my gaming friends in high school. I think that even predates the Game Sack channel entirely. "Final Fantasy is an RPG..."
Seeing that Beached Surfer Dude in Paint studio immediately made me realise the Mario Artist footage has to be from his video on the DD.
@@Mimi.1001, GREENDOG!
Thank you for making these types of videos. I love getting lost into the n64 DD lore lol
Awesome vid! I've always wondered what the 64DD catalogue would've been.
This video was super fun! I've always had a slight interest in the 64DD knowing that it had few games released and many were mediocre so it was nice to see all the other cancelled games and ports.
Great video. Interesting subject, thorough research, and entertaining presentation.
The Metal Slader section was incredible, please do a more in-depth episode about it!
Love H4G's involvement in episodes lately. They've been on my radar since Tony's dad interrupted them filming the fabled part 3 of the OoT betaquest series asking where the "Concorde keys" were. Simpler times ☺️ Cant wait for part 2!
I can’t freaking wait for part 2 of this! Nintendo’s failed systems have always been one of those weird niche interests of mine.
amazing work. excited for part 2
Automatic thumbs up for having @hard4games on.
Aww thanks!
as a major tezuka fan, i was NOT ready for the kimba jumpscare, I had two episodes on DVD growing up and it was my first exposure to Tezuka-sama
10/10 i would like more good star system games, please
THEY ARE HARD. THEY’RE HARD 4 GAMES! Always glad to see one of the best prototype and preservation channels out and about!
How did they expect a mail-order only add-on to take off!?
It was mail order? Lol
They didn't, which is why they limited it to mail order in the first place.
Yeah, Simba was never named after Kimba. The opposite would be more accurate.
Kiba's story is more original while the lion king is just hamlet lol also lion king 2 simbas pride is just romeo and juliet
I remember seeing Nintendo Power articles about Mario 128 and thinking it was going to be super cool. Same thing with 64 DD in general, the infamous Earthbound 64 sections in Nintendo Power hyped people up so much.
5:14 Adaaaaam, someone did it again.
Aw damn. Good video. Looking forward to part 2!
cool to see h4g pop up on this channel yet again! love those guys.
The 64DD was on my wish list for 5-6 years as I drooled over the Nintendo mags in the 90s
Makoto Tezuka decided to bank the future of the Jungle Emperor series on a movie wasn't localized in most countries and passing a video game oportunity spearheaded by one of the most iconic developers of all time, backed by the studio that revolutionized gaming time and time again. Boy did he ever bet on the wrong horse...
Damn. So Nintendo wasnt only fighting against unlicensed Games, they actually tried to create a marked for Indi devs without them flooding the general market with crappy games (like they did i believe around the 80s)
which makes it all the more sad seeing how Nintendo is treating their fans now
The way my eyes boggled when i saw finfin in this video!! Its sad though, even if it had released on the DD it still probably wouldn't have found a larger audience ... 😢
I'm actually quite the fan of Hybrid Heaven. The way you learn new moves by getting hit by them, having to balance that out with your health and attacks. Loved it. Really weird but unique concept.
I love these Nintendo 64DD videos rather It's about the product or It's games I find it fun and interesting. Cool video. ^_^
5:15 holy shit the nostalgia I felt hearing that trailer. I never knew what it was
Pokemon movie VHS?
@@DJIVision YES that’s where I heard it from
@@Adultishgambino42069 haha me too
Man this brings back all the hype I had for the 64DD ,especially earthbound
5:26
Fyi, Jonathan Taylor Thomas played young Simba. Matthew Broderick places adult Simba.
I was just watching the cancelled n64 games videos when this comes out
Idk about you but I'm here to see someone talks about earthbound 64 for the millionth time
Edit postwatching : and it's not even in the video but great video though
They don’t mention EB64? 😔 thanks for saving me the time
It’s shown at 3:30 tho 👀
metal slader glory looks so pretty how did i not hear about it
22:57 Sim Copter!?! No friggin way. It was rough on PC but man this...requires imagination. 😅
wow there was a lot more than I thought!
Ultimate Wars looked sweet. Was also funny that the simpsons was joking about Disney's lion king when they ended up getting bought by them in the end
47:26 8 megaBITS, not megabytes, which is only 1 megabyte. even the SFC version is only about 3 megabytes in size. very cool video tho. better research than i could ever manage in a millenium.
Thanks encom, a correction's been posted under this video as a pinned comment. Quite annoyed with myself for making that mistake. I had to deal with megabits/megabytes about a million times while writing the video, but somehow still managed to screw it up in the Metal Slader Glory segment =/
For what it's worth Metal Slader Glory seems to be only 1MB not 8MB tho for a FDS game that's still massive. (Edit: nvm you addressed it haha I'm dumb)
THE HARD4GAMES CROSSOVER OH ,MY GOD
The 64DD flopping robbed us of so many cool things
It flopped in more ways than one due to its storage format
More like it getting delayed to oblivion. I am pretty sure a number of games were already shifted to cartridge (or cancelled entirely) before the 64DD even came out.
It was a rough time for Nintendo. BOTH the N64 and 64DD had massive delays. Things could have turned out so much differently.
I feel i was waiting my life to this video (not joking)
This video is a dense brain-beating of dope information
I remember reading everything I could find about the DD when it was being developed. I was excited to get one. Obviously never did.
Its interesting to see what happened to all these games. Dinosaur Planet was always one I wanted to see completed
Dinosaur Planet wasn't a 64DD game and was released on the Gamecube as Star Fox Adventures.
Most of Dinosaur Planet on N64 is playable.
The n64dd is kinda sad, like they put so much riding on it that it makes me wonder why the n64 even used cartridges at all, and not only the floppy disks. I wonder how things would have been if the n64DD was the main way to play games on it and not just an add-on.
Would the system had been delayed until 1999 had it used floppy discs? That would have been bad! Really bad!
Wait, that sounds boring as hell, doesn’t it.”
Mate you literally just described Minecraft
Fair point but the "drop you in a field with nothing but a stick" was referring to Mario Artist, which potential 64DD buyers could see wasn't anything like Minecraft. If the 64DD had Minecraft as a launch title, I imagine things would've gone differently.
Very good!!
I love these Nintendo 64DD games!
Who knew an internal clock was this groundbreaking feature that no game would be possible without it. 😅
33:37 @Gamesack
Cubivore was such a fun game. A few of my friends had copies, I always had to borrow one to play it.
DYKG: Puts a video out with the title "All canceled N64DD games"
Also DYKG, at the very end of the video: "Oh, by the way, those weren't all the games. Just half of them, LOL. Bye!"
A shame that with the Switch being basically a tablet there was no Mario Paint or Mario Studio released for it.
Surprised wright wasn't mentioned to also be a super smash brawl assist trophy. I never knew who that green haired dude was, but now i completely understand 😂😂 thanks will wright
Shiren the Wanderer didn't start on the Satellaview.
Thanks Hax, a correction's been posted under this video as a pinned comment
19:00 - whoa whoa whoa, buddy ... That horse racing sim has made it to USA. The Santa Cruz, CA Beach Boardwalk has "Merlin's Arcade," which (at one point, haven't been there in a few years) had a MASSIVE Horse Derby Sim upstairs by the bathrooms. And it was an absolute sore thumb among the Tekken and Metal Slug cabinets... But it was there, I tell you
I wonder if you guys will ever do a video of the infamous Kirby GameCube game? Unless there isn’t enough info for that game.
Kinda nuts that idea wouldn’t be revisited (in some capacity) until Mass Attack on DS, and more authentically in Star Allies around 20 years later.
If only they focused more on the bangers launching such a delayed project with shovel ware was just a bad idea. Like "Sorry for the long wait here's an art program and sudoku but hang on Mario 64 2 is in the works eventually"
Kimba 64 is one of my most-wanted canceled games ever!
A new DidYouKnowGaming video based on all 64DD games featuring one of my favorite UA-camr's hard4games? Its like christmas morning!!!
18:14
Yoot is definitely the guy who made Seaman. I wouldn't accept anyone else except this exact guy.
Hard4games reminds me of the narrator from the sandlot. ❤
14:30 "In a word, it's a breeding game -- a game where you can play with your friends."
A game you can play with your friends, eh...?
i was not expecting a cliffhanger in a DYKG video.
