Yo, I made it in the video!! haha! awesome stuff, as usual ;) I'd say sub one minute Honda 2 is one of the most satisfying TKO's in the game. Such a deep and interesting history for this one!
Seeing all the TAS stuff mentioned across these videos kinda makes me interested in a Punch-Out TAS history. Like how each were developed and how each maker discovered new strats, as well how many of them impacted the game.
I love how the first half of every video is explaining the fight, and the lead up to Matt Turk taking the record. Then the second part is Sinister coming in, and how they beat Matt, and took it to now. It is a really nice way to structure the videos
Fitting for a fight as good as this one, I think this is the greatest video you've ever made. It goes through various strategies and eras, each one adding new knowledge and keeping things fresh, the explanations are clear enough that someone not familiar with the game can understand it, it has all the famous punch-out runners making contributions, and it also has something that no other non-trivial fight does: A defined start and end, starting just before the 1 minute counter and ending at the TAS tie.
hold on I’ve watched the video like 5 times and I’ve noticed this for a while but I just remembered to express the genius behind syncing forest funk’s star punch sfx with a star punch on screen. dope little easter egg I don’t see anyone else has mentioned lol
Sinister1's honda 2 strategy evolution video was what finally convinced me to try speedrunning this game, so seeing an updated history is something special, great video!
Another absolutely fantastic video Pap. This one is my favorite by far as it breaks down the mechanics behind the fight and really incorporates a lot of the tech that makes this game work.
You choose a lot of interesting music for your videos, and I'm always happy when I recognize songs from fairly obscure titles, like the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game.
Thank you for making this series I started speeding running MTPO because of it. Playing the game at higher level is a bit more difficult than expected. Its a good way to relax.
it's crazy how TAS discoveries have as much history as the human records, so cool! I'm imagining a dedicated video about it. It would be a great video.
Damn I love these videos lol. I only got to play punch out once when I was like 5 on grandma's NES lol. I dont think I ever even beat glass joe, I was 5 lmao
And you know, I just noticed how good the graphics in this game are. Like of course I've watched a lot of stuff about the game but I actually just took a minute and really looked and yeah, for NES it's really incredibly detailed. There's even glare on the corners of the ring (turnbuckle?), folds in the clothing, realistic muscle definition and facial features, it's really cool lol.
Wow. It feels like every nook and cranny of hidden game mechanics had to be deeply dug into to break so many barriers. What a fascinating and incredibly technical fight, broken down into understandable bite size pieces by this excellent video. Thank you, Pap.
This has to be my favorite one in the series. It just goes to show that even with a speedrun like this with very little RNG, there are a lot of different button combos and specific timing required in order to even make this fight possible. Those few players that have managed to tie the TAS truly show how dedicated with time and practice they are willing to put in for this effort and what others could possibly try to do in the future. Not just with Punch Out but with speed runs in general.
Ohh, I'm glad you covered the "dizzy destroyer" in more depth here. You have mentioned it in several other videos, but it wasn't clear to me what was special about it. If I understand correctly, it's a fast/consistent technique for getting 2 punches in situations that require guard manipulation, compared to the old way of manip guard -> punch, manip guard -> punch. Is there no way to continue the dizzy destroyer into a 3rd punch?
Correct, there is no way to connect it into a 3rd punch without doing another guard manipulation which takes 5 frames. There are a couple of other punch combo's that can be used (they dont have fancy names and they feature towards the end of the video (from about the 41.48 zallard time) and they are 4 punch combos but they require a delay after the second punch to let Honda's guard adjust. So they still boil down to 1 guard manip per 2 punches landed. There is also a "Reverse Dizzy Destroyer" which after a setup is a delayed face punch into misdirected gut punch that can be cycled over and over and this can be done with the right gut punch (making it deal 10 damage over 2 punches) but this was found after McHazards 2013 TAS and thus doesnt have the practical uses it would have if it was found prior.
Ive started one about another PS1 game, but unfortunately, the first person I talked to kinda forgot to get back to me with info... and the category isnt as exciting as I thought it would be... I might end up finishing it eventually though :D
There was never any confusion with 22 second knock down . I tied 39.97 tas with powerpak before Salts 40.61. First person to get face jab in P2 but you know that. It was the catalyst for H2 attempts. Sinister1 didn't recieve a file of my variation of the tas instead of Mchazard's actual tas, like you show in video. I changed punch sequence and split up both frame prefect max damage uppercuts to make it easier. No player has executed full Mchazard H2 tas strategy.
Could someone explain this to me: when you punch PIston honda, his head gets knocked backwards, but sometimes it gets knocked to the side. Is this determined by RNG?
It IS possible to knock Honda down out of his rush, and have him get back up. It happened to me twice, and I didn't understand what happened until after the second time. Originally I thought I just came across the mother of all random glitches. Then, I realized that when it happened, Honda only had a sliver of health left. So I didn't actually get the instant KD, I actually got the gutter which should yield a star....but since his health was so low, it just happened to knock him down instead. Which meant that the game treated it as it would any other knockdown...
I wonder if there's a challenge run where you have to beat all 14 fights without letting the opponent throw a punch. speedrunning tech would be useful, but I imagine the route would be different to a normal speedrun
You cant beat Don 1 without him throwing a punch, since you need to dodge 1 in order to deal any damage (same reason why a dodgeless run is impossible) Bull2 is technically possible, but RNG is gonna be insane Sandman and Tyson are also impossible, you wont be able to stall long enough before you pink.
@@Protoman3 assuming having to block, dodge, or duck a punch governs +1 to the counter and intercepts are allowed, this is actually a pretty fun idea to tas lol. sandy and tyson’s prolly gonna ruin everything
@Papamanual You must have made a mistake somewhere in the video. Why the perfect mike tyson speedrun will never happen. Piston Honda 2 has been perfected
@@mugencoreni7130 plenty of individual times have been perfected (Joe, Kaiser, Don 1, Hippo, Tiger, Piston Honda 2 and Sandman) But as for the others, we are a ways off... Then when I say the perfect speedrun will never happen, that would be getting the perfect time on each fight all in a row... It wont happen.
I beat Piston Honda 2 in about 30 seconds. I dodged his first 3 punches and his first uppercut and then hit him with a high, right punch and he instantly went down at about 15 seconds. Then he got up and did his special move right away and I punched him in the gut and he went down at about 30 seconds and never got up. I can't even finish the game, don't have video proof, and it was sheer luck on my part, but others who are far better than me at this game should try and replicate what I did. It worked for me. Cheers.
