The Longest Super Mario World Speedrun History

  • Over the last 30 years, this game has been torn apart more than any other Mario title. With the game’s less linear approach, people have repeatedly found new challenging ways to beat the game, but there’s one specific goal I have in mind.
Today, I want to dive into something people have been trying to piece together for years: the entire history of beating every single level in the game at once. This is the World Record History of Super Mario World 96 Exit.

This was a fun video to come up on my recommended! I’m Jason Baum, aka GameCube04 (though I haven’t gone by that in a long time, haha). I did the 1:31:45 speed run way back in 2005. I really appreciate you showing highlights of my run, especially the Tubular strategy! I was always proud of that one. You are correct that my thinking of going small in Valley of Bowser 2 was to navigate the raising/lowering platform section faster. It’s interesting to me that not only was this apparently unnecessary, but that other runners copied that strategy!
Speed running was a lot different in the early years- it was much more of an individual effort as far as coming up with routes and strategies, whereas today it’s much more community based. But that’s what I’m most proud of about my run- I came up with every strategy for every level all by myself. It was really interesting learning how much this category has progressed with the new strats and clips- definitely way beyond my skill level! When I was going for my run, I always figured a “perfect” run would be in the 1:28 range- clearly I was wrong.
Fun fact- my speed run actually made it into the 2007 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records!

When you said "beating every single level at once", for a second I thought you meant literally getting every exit at the exact same time which, while almost certainly impossible would be one goddamn incredible TAS if you could somehow do that with one set of inputs sent to 96 emulators at the same time.

Where we can see two sides of the world speed running a game when all of a sudden, through the internet, these groups of people are able to see the strategies each other came up with or found. So interesting to see all the ideas come together

12:07 It's so weird hearing how difficult it is to actually track anything pre 2013. There are a bunch of games we can go way back. For instance, we basically have the entire history of Goldeneye. Granted, it had its own dedicated site, but we have almost everything from the 90s till today.
There's even videos of old runs. They would record them onto a VHS tape and send them in as proof.

That impresses me is that there is tools to make mods of this game (all fan made) and mods is STILL coming even now. And many of those mod is surpassed original beyond any beliefs not just making new levels or add some beauty bits (honestly, original was rushed and it feels, game is little barren in tern of eye candy) - they even add content from OTHER games inside.

Regarding your question @26:23 that bugged me too so I did a deep dive and also came up empty. I won't speed run because it will forever change my outlook on the game, making it less fun..

I really want to watch this video but pretty much never knowing what year it is or not having any indication of when these runs were done actually makes it painful to watch/understand. Even just having a date on the bottom left of the screen to show who's video this belongs to and when it was recorded would highly boost the video's quality, but not having that and it being so unclear what year it is just makes it so hard to watch.
Edit: watched the rest anyway, video is still pretty good, though my above nitpick does still apply

At 26:05 to 26:54 there is a really weird, and pretty severe, audio glitch. Possibly blew my headphones (left side doesn't work anymore) but haven't tested on another device yet.
EDIT: The aberration actually kicks back in AGAIN at 26:58 on-the dot, and stops at 27:06, then kicks back in AGAIN at 27:09, and stops at 27:50. - which "seems" to be the end of it.
Just thought i'd let you know. Great vid other then that!
(edit: corrected time frames to be 100% accurate instead of an approximation, and added some more time frames in a 2nd edit)

I remember the SNES no-one played. I think it stands for Stupid Nintendo Entertainment System. Is that right?
