Diablo on Mobile could have just not gone this direction with microtransactions and they would have been praised. Diablo Immortal could have been an amazing experience in the mobile space, but all they care about is using the platform to make money.

Gacha seems to be one of the most accessible ways to attract a variety of players on mobile (especially Android where apps are expected to be free and no one wants push notification ads) and some are fairly free2play friendly while having a lot of gacha options too (mostly cosmetics + rolling for characters). Some also control their market specifically to avoid enabling whaling too much. Warframe which Charles mentioned removed an item from their store when they noticed people were spending too much on it, and their paid currency can actually be traded with anyone and feeds into the entire in-game economy, among other helpful tidbits. Yostar's Azur Lane and Arknights are also pretty generous for f2p players, literally mailing you premium currency after every maintenance downtime etc and without insane odds. I.e. they limit the feeling that you *need* to spend. I think one problem is those models require actually adding value content to the game regularly for years, while the likes of Blizzard would rather profit off of less work.

His scams aren't ENTIRLEY scams, they're trying to sell something but since they're just minors with no job nor get an allowance, they just rely on what's around them to make it work. There's a German streamer who plays nothing but Diablo for years. He's insanely proficient and knowledgeable about anything Diablo. He was absolutely STOMPED in PvP by a whale who cashed out

And it wasn't his first PvP match, he was lvl 60, played multiple rounds, and still was absolutely stomped. The endgame just isn't fun for free-to-play players. But those aren't the people Blizzard wants to cater to. They want those big fat hogs that dump their savings into the game as well as those that invest money regularly. You can say what you want. No matter how good you play, a Free-to-play will never beat a whale. The Legendary 5-5-Star gems have a resonance of up to 100. Multiple of those and you can easily outscale the resonance of Free-to-Play players just by those gems, not even mentioning their abilities. I would rather play more Diablo 3 and wait for Diablo 4 than play this, after Blizzard spits in the faces of their average fans like this
Be glad your gov. protects the people who might fall for scams like that. I worked for 2 companies with this business model (Pay2Win MMORPGs) and I can tell you that they constantly try to push the (legal) limits to squeeze more money out of people and even children. People should understand that if somehting is "free" it is just an investement to lure a lot of players in. And if a game has a lot of players some people (the so called "whales", who keep the company afloat) will spend literally thousands of Euros/Dollars just to "be someone" on the server. It's sad. They make money on the insecurities of people. They really just want your money. They have no passion for gaming and they don't want you to have fun. They want as much money from you as possible before you get wiser or some help.
I recently bought my own apartment with 3 rooms, 2 bathrooms, a separate kitchen and a parking space, which costed me $97.000 (I live in a poor country). Still cheaper than maximizing a Diablo character...

If neither of those came out and they instead did classic+ or whatever, where the tweaked issues, and optimized the game and mechanics and left it classic Era, loads of people would still be playing classic. Start seasonal servers with tbc mechanics and classes with brand new classic exclusive dungeons and a couple raids and classic would be booming.
I particularly "love" the reward for killing a boss is the chance to spend some real world money. The boss doesn't drop any loot it just presents a hey spend money screen - you know you want to. Early game is bait to get you invested enough that when you hit the pay wall you feel obliged to fork out cash - they hired psychologists to best determine how to design the game in order to have maximum effect on people loosening purse strings.

They've learned the biggest hurdle of micro-transactions is the first purchase. Once you've spent a few dollars you think "well I got a lot of value out of one dollar and I've already spent money, let's buy this ten dollar pack" etc. That's how predatory it is.

Lmfao the only lesson they learned with Diablo Immortal after the “Don’t you guys have phones” incident was to just port the game to PC, they weren’t even satisfied with the standard mobile game monetization scheme they had set a new standard.
I think it's more they looked towards Genshin and how it has a PC client and the Enhanced BP + Boon is very similar to Welkins/Gnostic Hymn from Genshin. Plus they have fuck-all else releasing anytime soon, so they wanted to appease people on PC as well if possible.

Im not saying that’s ok but im just saying people are getting mad that a Chinese mobile game is modelling it’s monetisation on a successful Chinese mobile game… Genshin and Diablo immortal are fun games ruined by greedy monetisation and unfortunately just like with FIFA we have accepted that that’s ok because the majority of core gamers don’t play sports games or mobile games. I’m really hoping they fix Diablo because I’ve been having fun but I think the systems are too deep routed and I know the wall is coming, just like Genshin where I need to pay to have fun and that’s when I drop it.
There’s definitely a way to do micro transactions that aren’t so blatantly greedy. I mean it’s free to play, micro transactions are expected but it’s doesn’t need to be so directly tied to progression. You think that they’d be concerned with the public reception, but blizzard has shown that they either don’t care or they’re trying to squeeze the wallets of what’s left of their fan base before they become bankrupt.

Yeah they aren’t removing any of these micro transactions. First day the game launched I inspected multiple players and saw tons of these idiots with full socketed high level legendary gems already. These people are embarrassing.
I was excited for this. I thought after the immense backlash and them delaying the game for like 2 years, they would’ve removed and reworked a lot of the IAPs. But then when I downloaded it and completed the opening mission, I was bombarded with the IAPs and realized they learned nothing and don’t care about Diablo fans.

Well then if they want me to pay 100$ for some blue balls, what is "micro" about it when retail games cost about 50$?! These should be called "macrotransactions" or something entirely new like "stealing".
Might be about how quick it happens, or it might be micro in the sense of it not being exceptionally large. Miniguns are mini because they are a scaled down version of a much larger gun.
@@beaustrom923 well, it started from Horse Armor DLC and for a few years, this was the norm. The game was $60 but this little DLC was $2,50 - micro in comparision to the cost of the game. But we have evolved far past this point and microtransactions being more expensive than the game itself is commonplace.
The whole "you guys don't have phones" line is even more hilarious because apparently it's stupidly huge. Like 10 gig apparently. The biggest mobile game I've ever seen is wild rift which is like 6gig and people complain about it being too big with every major update. How many people have phones that have over 10 gig of free space?

Of course people will get that one since they see it as a better deal, and now they will be forced to log in 30 days in a row if they do not want to lose any of their purchased items. It would be way less scummy to just not offer the option. It’s not entirely bad as F2P but it’s not exactly amazing, I’m enjoying it as F2P but part of me is ignoring how shitty pvp is. You could do well without having dropping a cent, unless It’s in PvP. But on the other side if you are trying to be first top whatever than count on your wallet and a decent size brain.

Blizzard just decided that not only would they give their fans a pill that was hard to swallow, but they'd take a nice steaming dump on it too, right before handing it off to you. Even by modern day mobage standards, Immortal is egregious. Blizzard straight-up married the mobile model with the P2W Korean MMO model, and even the gacha gaming communities are mocking them. I can't even begin to imagine how fans of the original Diablo games must feel. Asmongold did a side by side comparison of playing one section free on one screen and pay to win on the other screen. In the pay to win version, you win twenty bonus stars at the end of the chapter while on the free side you win zero ZERO bonus stars at the end of the chapter.

The end for PC gaming sure, but with mobile gaming they're gonna make record profits. Every major video game company is going mobile. Why? Because mobile gamers are addicted to spending money and the companies know it.
Does it ruin any game, single player or multiplayer, to constantly have the knowledge that if I just paid a few dollars I'd be more powerful or grow faster and be able to get through difficult parts of the game more easily? Yeah, it absolutely does. The only reason I haven't paid hundreds of dollars on free MMOs and mobile games is because I despise the very existence of microtransactions and refuse to partake on sheer principle. They are a plague in gaming and have been so normalized that few people even see how bad it has made every game with that model. I mostly play games that I can just pay for once. DLC used to be the bad guy, now it's the hero option by comparison.
Not to mention that games with microtransactions are purposefully designed to be as obnoxious and slowpaced as possible without paying for the upgrades.

The RMAH utterly ruined the pace of the game. If you didn't buy gear in Act 3, it was a shitshow. Gear drop rates were terrible and designed to incentivize using it. What's the point of playing Diablo if you can't get good loot? But with this game, no need to worry, because the entire game was designed with MTX in mind
I disagree that single-player p2w is fine. That kind of system, and DImortall is an excellent example, preys on people's psychology, especially if you're prone for a gambling addiction. It can, and has ruined those who lack impulse control.

Yeah, this is true with gachas as well. Genshin for example uses FOMO by limited character banners to reel in people who really want the character to whale, and this is true for a lot of other gachas as well.

It's amazing how doing these things isn't illegal. I had no idea that the game went as far as nuking the shit people PAID for if they don't log in until Charlie brought it up...
It isn't as bad as nuking things, it's actually a very, very common gacha game mechanic. What they do is give you a set amount of whatever up front (usually currency) then more every day you log in over time (almost always 30 days). Then advertise it as being, say, 1000 gems cheap. That cheap should be said very sarcastically, I remember FFBE WOTV whales being ecstatic they could get a good character fully built for a mere $75 dollars. Anyway, you may only get 700 up front, but you're logging in every day, right, so it's really 1000, just not right away, no false advertising here. If you don't log in then you're a bad mobile gamer and don't get your 10 gems for the day. You don't lose what you already had but that 1000 gems they advertise is very conditional. It's paid daily rewards on top of the free stuff. Mobile game devs REALLY want you logging in and doing something, anything, every single day. That's second only to getting you to pay because it makes it part of your routine, a normal thing, a habit, and don't we all splurge on our habits? Just throw that $5 out there to make your hobby a little less grindy, that's like one cup of coffee, you can afford one cup of coffee a month, right? Don't you have Starbucks? side note: I bet Belgium and the Netherlands aren't feeling so bad about that lootbox ban now. Oh no, Blizzard's crying because they can't release the game there (unless they mark it Pegi 18+ and warn it has gambling in it, which are obviously impossible conditions) because of of stupid LAWS trying to take their games away. I wonder how the calculation was done, so they're saying $100k to max everything out, but you could just play free and it would take years to do so. To me, that sounds exactly like the clash of clans model. It takes years to max out, or you could dump your parent's 401k's into gems and do it all in minutes. Although I know absolutely nothing about this game so maybe it's more than that.
The 100,000 is to max out gems, it cost significantly more to even get them first, the real estimate to get gems and THEN max them out is around 600,000

Fortunately there's ONE triple A release that's gonna 100% follow that path, Elden Ring. It's the exception that proves the rule though, one or two good releases in an entire year won't change the game industry's current state. A friend of mine bought the battle pass. Imagine the absolute disgust he felt when he made a new character and found out the battle pass only works on a per character basis - not per account. Yep, not sending Blizzard any more money after that.

Kinda like Bethesda and Zenimax did with Fallout 76's "Fallout 1st" and ESO's VIP membership. You rent basic inventory management and QoL features that existed in all their previous games but once you stop paying you lose access to it.
This is crazy. I'm glad I've really cut down on games since loot boxes got introduced. Monster Hunter, Metroid, Metro, Elden Ring, and Darksiders are all I've really played since then. Going back to old games. Screw the way these new games are made.
Reminds me of those phone games where if you upgraded everything the day it came out it was like 16k. And at least 10 ppl in each kingdom would be maxed that day. And they upgraded weekly. Imo those games started it all
Coming back to revisit this game after playing it and the worst part of the pay to win system just straight up making you stronger for spending money: the end game is all about the shadows vs immortals. To put it short, theres a shadow war and is essentially ends with a dps check. If you beat the immortal faster than the other clan, you win. Obviously you can just spend money for stuff and be better than everyone else in the server, and yes, people just spend money to be better than everyone else in the server. So pretty much, if you do want to play the game, play until you unlock a quest that says "participate in a shadow war" and then just uninstall it.
I watched a VOD of Asmongold buying everything he could the moment he came across it. Sort of as an experiment, sort of because he could. There's an NPC in the game that tells you about the "marketplace" and how you use special currency there. He then says "Here. Your first few are on me." The whole chat claimed "drug dealer" lol.

True that. And I think that’s where PVE MTX can cause issues. If the game is designed around forcing you to pay, like Immortal arguably is, then it’s a problem.
Microtransactions are using the same psychological reactions that slot machines do. Does not matter whether it is single or multi player, it should be restricted.
At least with slot machines there’s the micro chance you win some money. They’ve figured out how to get people to give them money and give back absolutely nothing in return.

The funniest part is the 100k price tag to max a character assumes they never add content to the game and power creep the old stuff. There isn't a doubt in my mind they'll expand heavily on this after it becomes their highest grossing game of all time.
Considering this is essentially what happened to Hearthstone with humble beginnings and a few years later extreme power creeping, I imagine this will be the case.
I'm surprised that Charlie was so surprised with the 800% thing. This marketing tactic has been a long time in mobile game industry. They always advertise it with insane value to bait players to buy it.
That deal is always the best deal you can get in those games as well. But it's not enough to get anything meaningful with the currency. So to actually get something that is decent, you have to pay A LOT more.
I'm assuming I'm assuming the number is based on value relative to some baseline thing you can purchase that no one actually does purchase. Like if they had one ice cream that cost $10-20 that obviously no one buys, but lets them put a "+1000% value" tag on every other ice cream.
The scary thing about this is not that they made a game this scummy…it’s that they know it’s scummy, know it’s going to hurt their image even more and they don’t care because it’s still going to be a huge success and be worth the development cost and cost to blizzards image.
But it’s so egregious that it’s hard to fathom anyone wanting to spend THAT much money. I guess that’s my pov. I’ll shamelessly say I’m sometimes one of those people to spend money on a game but it’s literally only for cosmetics. Only games I’ve ever spent dlc money on is Destiny 2 and they actually seem to care.

A lot of people don't play mobile games and aren't really aware of the depths of fuckery that goes on there. This game is drawing attention to it from the gaming community at large.

I'm sorry to inform you but I work in gaming development and mobile/tablet market is 52%, PC is just 20% and Console 28% (2021). So yea, the majority of people play mobile games. Not everyone can afford a console or a PC, however almost every human out there has a mobile phone. This however, does not justify anything of the trash they are putting into these games.

Even giving the benefit of the doubt that the estimations are high, paying more than the cost of a digital deluxe preorder AAA game ($120 or so) for a mobile game is just unconscionable.
And yet people regularly spend hundreds of dollars a month on mobile games. One single game. They claim "It's a 3000 hour game! Your AAA game only lasted 40 hours!" when all of that is just grinding the same battles over and over like the free to play people did, except they didn't spent $1,000. People seem to believe that grinding = gameplay, which = value for your (hundreds of) dollars. It's as logical as watching the same movie 20 times claiming it gave you "40 hours of entertainment" because they charged you each time you watched it. This insanity is normal now.

In any category - real estate, cars, travel, furniture, whatever. And if you annoy them long enough, they just tell you it's their money, they can do whatever they want, no matter how nonsense it is. That's all there really is to it, I think. And as long as there are people like that, willing to spend huge amounts of money on nonsense products, people selling the products will be increasing prices as much as they can for these nonsense products.

The problem with pay to win in ANY game - even single player - is that the game will be tuned to incentivize you to spend more money. There will always be a clear advantage for the developer to create problems so that they can sell you the solution. That's why I disagree with Cr1tikal on this point. P2W is not ok in single player games.
The newer Assassin's Creed games come to mind with their grindy resource/material gathering, can't shake the feeling that they were made more grindy to make paying for them more appealing...
Never forget about the time that they removed microtransactions from Middle Earth Shadow of War. The game was clearly designed around the idea of forcing players to pay up, which became blatantly apparent when the ability to pay for microtransactions was removed. The game was virtually unplayable with how grindy it was, and it needed to be totally rebalanced
Microtransactions in general are scummy. I don't even like cosmetics. Games always used to have super cool exclusive cosmetics/gear but it was a reward for playing, not paying them money for pixels on a screen.

Not really, they were still good for a while even under Activision. They released the most popular WoW expansion under Activision, they made Starcraft 2 under Activision, Overwatch and Hearthstone were good games in their beginning, Heroes of the Storm is pretty fun still.
Can someone tell me how much time it would take to max a character out as a f2p player? I think it's a pretty important factor because if it's like a month, then it's not a big deal, logically speaking.

You don't lose anything, missing a login doesn't delete the rewards it's just paused until u login, f2p games gotta make money somehow and a monthly pass is pretty well accepted.

Having a company doesn't automatically make you a greedy businessperson just because you wanna make money. Raid is shockingly decent for F2P, they realized quick that if they don’t give serious rewards to F2P players the community would die and whales need F2P players to keep the game alive. So it’s way worse.
If someone wanted to bother, Blizzard probably could get sued for the daily login thing if it really does take away something that you paid for. It would likely be a difficult lawsuit to win though because of Terms and Conditions.

If you want to be a top pvper yeah obviously you have to whale, but in summoners war at least, you can get plenty of good pve characters easily through f2p methods. Even through the story thats easy and doesn't take too long to complete.
this strategy is sooo scummy but also so smart. They start it off by giving players a super good deal which breaks the barrier from "I'm not paying anything for this game" to "ah whatever, I've already spent some money so what's another dollar or two". And only letting paying people into clans is also smart for multiple reasons, 1. of course people are gonna want to be in clans and will then pay for that alone but also 2. when you throw a bunch of pay to win players into a group, they will want to compete and always be the best, which means they will spend more and more money to get there. That wouldn't be the case if they let F2P players in because as soon as you spend just a little bit you are already on top. Damn this is so scummy
funnily enough this business model has been in league for DECADES. I remember seeing hobby magazine subscription with like a bit of a 3-6 months project you assemble bit by bit by getting every issues, be it model trains, planes, stuff like that. First one was always one bucks, second one and onwards 10-20 bucks.
And yet it's nothing new or revolutionary. Blizzard is literally copying the tons upon tons of copy paste garbage playstore's been keeping up for years. This is yet another copy-paste situation with this game as far as this stuff is concerned. Don't you think they put any effort at all into thinking this through and developing their own strategy to get the most out of the game, they literally looked at something else and just used that. It's copying homework and not even changing it. Takes a single search in playstore to confirm how much of the same horrible gambling game exists on there.

And even he doesn't do that for Riot or LoL. He acknowledges pretty much everything about the company and the game and even his own situation, even if he doesn't truly try to fix it ever. This is what's sad about Blizzard. Some people still think supporting the company is the right thing to do cause they remember being right and accepted in a community back in the 2010s. I do actually work in a grocery store near relatively near Blizzard's HQ in Irvine and get a lot of Blizzard employees as customers. And they are seriously trying to push a narrative that Blizzard is VERY "feminist" and an "LGBTQA+ Ally", actually, by making their employees not only wear Blizzard merchandise outside the office at all times (which I always thought was vaguely disturbing when I first learned about that Blizzard policy in my very pro-Blizzard animation college), but wearing shirts and having bumper stickers on their cars and tote bags with a rainbow or pink versions of the "Blizzard" logo to show support for the same female and non-binary employees that have allegedly been sexually harassed at the studio. And this is coming from a company that claimed it wasn't political during the "Free Hong Kong" controversy. The real kicker is that, besides the Blizzards employees in their corporate-mandated Blizzard merchandise, my store is more populated by old, ultra-Republican, opinionated retirees that are more alarmed by "Aunt Jemima" syrup being re-branded as "Pearl Milling Company" syrup in response to the 2020 BLM protests than they are about the pandemic or climate change in an already-hot part of the country. In general, Orange County, California is disproportionately-Red county in otherwise Deep-Blue California and arguably even more extreme about it than Orange County, Florida. So you can imagine the stupid culture war nonsense I have to deal with at work every day when a jaded old guy in a "Let's Go Brandon" hat and shirt shares the same space as a Blizzard employee reluctantly promoting their employer's brand of corporate "woke-ness" by wearing rainbow Blizzard logos all over themselves. And, to be clear, while I have inevitable drifted left just to annoy Orange County Boomers, I think corporate "woke-ness" in general is laughable and does more harm than good to the causes these companies claim to support, especially coming from a company that obviously deserves to be criticized for how it treats its employees and fans like modern Blizzard. Why do “mobile” games HAVE to have micro-transactions? The only answer I’ve ever heard to that question is, “because it’s a mobile game.” That circular reasoning doesn’t answer the question. These companies will continue to do this as long as people spend money on these micro-transactions. If you’re spending money on them, then you’re a large part of the problem. You’re creating the market that they’re taking advantage of.
I'm guessing that it's much faster for transactions to go through on phones. I don't know maybe they have their card saved in the play store and can just one tap to pay whereas on consoles n PC you'd have to verify, and most likely with your phone anyway

There’s a decent reason. Because most mobile games are free the company needs to make money, so they have ads and micro transactions. Now obviously some get really greedy and have hundreds of things to purchase, upwards of 100s of dollars for a single bundle. I remember when Blizzard was new and loving their games so much. It's like seeing a friend of yours die, but instead of just having the joy of "Hey, you remember Blizzard?" It's more like somebody dug up it's corpse, skinned it, and is parading around in it's rotting skin claiming he's Blizzard trying to steal your money for drugs.
I've often said watching these companies over the last 5-10 years is like watching old friends slowly falling into a drug dependency, lose everything they have spent their lives building one by one, and then in a finaly show of desperation when nothing is left they begin to reach out to those closest to them to exploit for as long as possible, rather than face the music and begin the healing process. Imho it it actually much easier and preferable to have lost a good friend entirely out of the blue when they are in their prime. It certainly was for me personally; I'll always have the fond memories of my uncle that passed away, but probably always regret not having done (or being able to have do) more to save one of my best friends from college that actually happened to. And it's not like we haven't been pleading with the industry that this road is a dead end, but as the old saying goes you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

Diablo on Mobile could have just not gone this direction with microtransactions and they would have been praised. Diablo Immortal could have been an amazing experience in the mobile space, but all they care about is using the platform to make money.

@@luizotavio44 true, although I gotta say not all *gacha are created equal. Gacha seems to be one of the most accessible ways to attract a variety of players on mobile (especially Android where apps are expected to be free and no one wants push notification ads) and some are fairly free2play friendly while having a lot of gacha options too (mostly cosmetics + rolling for characters).
Some also control their market specifically to avoid enabling whaling too much. Warframe which Charles mentioned removed an item from their store when they noticed people were spending too much on it, and their paid currency can actually be traded with anyone and feeds into the entire in-game economy, among other helpful tidbits. Yostar's Azur Lane and Arknights are also pretty generous for f2p players, literally mailing you premium currency after every maintenance downtime etc and without insane odds. I.e. they limit the feeling that you *need* to spend.
I think one problem is those models require actually adding value content to the game regularly for years, while the likes of Blizzard would rather profit off of less work.

Knowledge about ARPGs and how those work and how you optimize and play those ideally, that is mandatory for PvP.
And it wasn't his first PvP match, he was lvl 60, played multiple rounds, and still was absolutely stomped. The endgame just isn't fun for free-to-play players. But those aren't the people Blizzard wants to cater to. They want those big fat hogs that dump their savings into the game as well as those that invest money regularly.
You can say what you want. No matter how good you play, a Free-to-play will never beat a whale.
The Legendary 5-5-Star gems have a resonance of up to 100. Multiple of those and you can easily outscale the resonance of Free-to-Play players just by those gems, not even mentioning their abilities.
I would rather play more Diablo 3 and wait for Diablo 4 than play this, after Blizzard spits in the faces of their average fans like this

I worked for 2 companies with this business model (Pay2Win MMORPGs) and I can tell you that they constantly try to push the (legal) limits to squeeze more money out of people and even children. People should understand that if somehting is "free" it is just an investement to lure a lot of players in. And if a game has a lot of players some people (the so called "whales", who keep the company afloat) will spend literally thousands of Euros/Dollars just to "be someone" on the server. It's sad. They make money on the insecurities of people. They really just want your money. They have no passion for gaming and they don't want you to have fun. They want as much money from you as possible before you get wiser or some help.

Yes, it is that game. However, the PC Beta just became available so people are now giving it attention.
I particularly "love" the reward for killing a boss is the chance to spend some real world money. The boss doesn't drop any loot it just presents a hey spend money screen - you know you want to. Early game is bait to get you invested enough that when you hit the pay wall you feel obliged to fork out cash - they hired psychologists to best determine how to design the game in order to have maximum effect on people loosening purse strings.

They've learned the biggest hurdle of micro-transactions is the first purchase. Once you've spent a few dollars you think "well I got a lot of value out of one dollar and I've already spent money, let's buy this ten dollar pack" etc. That's how predatory it is.

I remember being confused as to why this huge expansion was only a ~5mb download... until I found out the expansion didn't need to be downloaded; it was already loaded on the disc.

I think it's more they looked towards Genshin and how it has a PC client and the Enhanced BP + Boon is very similar to Welkins/Gnostic Hymn from Genshin. Plus they have fuck-all else releasing anytime soon, so they wanted to appease people on PC as well if possible.

Except they didn’t, Genshin impact has the exact same systems. Im not saying that’s ok but im just saying people are getting mad that a Chinese mobile game is modelling it’s monetisation on a successful Chinese mobile game… Genshin and Diablo immortal are fun games ruined by greedy monetisation and unfortunately just like with FIFA we have accepted that that’s ok because the majority of core gamers don’t play sports games or mobile games.
I’m really hoping they fix Diablo because I’ve been having fun but I think the systems are too deep routed and I know the wall is coming, just like Genshin where I need to pay to have fun and that’s when I drop it.
There’s definitely a way to do micro transactions that aren’t so blatantly greedy. I mean it’s free to play, micro transactions are expected but it’s doesn’t need to be so directly tied to progression. You think that they’d be concerned with the public reception, but blizzard has shown that they either don’t care or they’re trying to squeeze the wallets of what’s left of their fan base before they become bankrupt.
You can play the game and progress just fine without paying a dime.

Yeah they aren’t removing any of these micro transactions. First day the game launched I inspected multiple players and saw tons of these idiots with full socketed high level legendary gems already. These people are embarrassing.
I was excited for this. I thought after the immense backlash and them delaying the game for like 2 years, they would’ve removed and reworked a lot of the IAPs. But then when I downloaded it and completed the opening mission, I was bombarded with the IAPs and realized they learned nothing and don’t care about Diablo fans.

Well then if they want me to pay 100$ for some blue balls, what is "micro" about it when retail games cost about 50$?! Macrotransactions should be (and I think in some circles is) an accepted term for this.
Might be about how quick it happens, or it might be micro in the sense of it not being exceptionally large. Miniguns are mini because they are a scaled down version of a much larger gun.
@@beaustrom923 well, it started from Horse Armor DLC and for a few years, this was the norm. The game was $60 but this little DLC was $2,50 - micro in comparision to the cost of the game. But we have evolved far past this point and microtransactions being more expensive than the game itself is commonplace.

The biggest mobile game I've ever seen is wild rift which is like 6gig and people complain about it being too big with every major update. How many people have phones that have over 10 gig of free space?

It would be way less scummy to just not offer the option. Blizzard just decided that not only would they give their fans a pill that was hard to swallow, but they'd take a nice steaming dump on it too, right before handing it off to you.
Even by modern day mobage standards, Immortal is egregious. Blizzard straight-up married the mobile model with the P2W Korean MMO model, and even the gacha gaming communities are mocking them. I can't even begin to imagine how fans of the original Diablo games must feel. Probably the gaming equivalent of watching your hot girlfriend get forcefully bent over the kitchen sink and fucked right in front of you by an ugly bastard.

The end for PC gaming sure, but with mobile gaming they're gonna make record profits. Every major video game company is going mobile. Why? Because mobile gamers are addicted to spending money and the companies know it.
Does it ruin any game, single player or multiplayer, to constantly have the knowledge that if I just paid a few dollars I'd be more powerful or grow faster and be able to get through difficult parts of the game more easily? Yeah, it absolutely does. The only reason I haven't paid hundreds of dollars on free MMOs and mobile games is because I despise the very existence of microtransactions and refuse to partake on sheer principle. They are a plague in gaming and have been so normalized that few people even see how bad it has made every game with that model.
I mostly play games that I can just pay for once. DLC used to be the bad guy, now it's the hero option by comparison.
Not to mention that games with microtransactions are purposefully designed to be as obnoxious and slowpaced as possible without paying for the upgrades.

The RMAH utterly ruined the pace of the game. If you didn't buy gear in Act 3, it was a shitshow. Gear drop rates were terrible and designed to incentivize using it. What's the point of playing Diablo if you can't get good loot? But with this game, no need to worry, because the entire game was designed with MTX in mind

It isn't as bad as nuking things, it's actually a very, very common gacha game mechanic. What they do is give you a set amount of whatever up front (usually currency) then more every day you log in over time (almost always 30 days). Then advertise it as being, say, 1000 gems cheap. That cheap should be said very sarcastically, I remember FFBE WOTV whales being ecstatic they could get a good character fully built for a mere $75 dollars. Anyway, you may only get 700 up front, but you're logging in every day, right, so it's really 1000, just not right away, no false advertising here. If you don't log in then you're a bad mobile gamer and don't get your 10 gems for the day. You don't lose what you already had but that 1000 gems they advertise is very conditional. It's paid daily rewards on top of the free stuff.
Mobile game devs REALLY want you logging in and doing something, anything, every single day. That's second only to getting you to pay because it makes it part of your routine, a normal thing, a habit, and don't we all splurge on our habits? Just throw that $5 out there to make your hobby a little less grindy, that's like one cup of coffee, you can afford one cup of coffee a month, right? Don't you have Starbucks?
side note: I bet Belgium and the Netherlands aren't feeling so bad about that lootbox ban now. I wonder how the calculation was done, so they're saying $100k to max everything out, but you could just play free and it would take years to do so. To me, that sounds exactly like the clash of clans model. It takes years to max out, or you could dump your parent's 401k's into gems and do it all in minutes. Although I know absolutely nothing about this game so maybe it's more than that.
The 100,000 is to max out gems, it cost significantly more to even get them first, the real estimate to get gems and THEN max them out is around 600,000
From what I have seen you can't even get gems without legendary crest and no 5 star gem with rare crest.

Y’all remember when games almost always released in a working state for $60 and a few months later if it was a slapper they’d release dlc for about $30 to expand the universe/gameplay and it felt like a mini sequel
And stuff like skins/new items were UNLOCKED through in game challenges, achievements, and general progress, not $10 dlc "item packs"

Kinda like Bethesda and Zenimax did with Fallout 76's "Fallout 1st" and ESO's VIP membership. You rent basic inventory management and QoL features that existed in all their previous games but once you stop paying you lose access to it.

This is crazy. I'm glad I've really cut down on games since loot boxes got introduced. Monster Hunter, Metroid, Metro, Elden Ring, and Darksiders are all I've really played since then. Going back to old games. Screw the way these new games are made.

Coming back to revisit this game after playing it and the worst part of the pay to win system just straight up making you stronger for spending money: the end game is all about the shadows vs immortals. To put it short, theres a shadow war and is essentially ends with a dps check. If you beat the immortal faster than the other clan, you win. Obviously you can just spend money for stuff and be better than everyone else in the server, and yes, people just spend money to be better than everyone else in the server.
So pretty much, if you do want to play the game, play until you unlock a quest that says "participate in a shadow war" and then just uninstall it.
I watched a VOD of Asmongold buying everything he could the moment he came across it. Sort of as an experiment, sort of because he could. There's an NPC in the game that tells you about the "marketplace" and how you use special currency there. He then says "Here. Your first few are on me." The whole chat claimed "drug dealer" lol.

I'm sorry to inform you but I work in gaming development and mobile/tablet market is 52%, PC is just 20% and Console 28% (2021). So yea, the majority of people play mobile games. Not everyone can afford a console or a PC, however almost every human out there has a mobile phone. This however, does not justify anything of the trash they are putting into these games.

Even giving the benefit of the doubt that the estimations are high, paying more than the cost of a digital deluxe preorder AAA game ($120 or so) for a mobile game is just unconscionable.
And yet people regularly spend hundreds of dollars a month on mobile games. One single game. They claim "It's a 3000 hour game! Your AAA game only lasted 40 hours!" when all of that is just grinding the same battles over and over like the free to play people did, except they didn't spent $1,000.
People seem to believe that grinding = gameplay, which = value for your (hundreds of) dollars.
It's as logical as watching the same movie 20 times claiming it gave you "40 hours of entertainment" because they charged you each time you watched it. This insanity is normal now.

The problem with pay to win in ANY game - even single player - is that the game will be tuned to incentivize you to spend more money. There will always be a clear advantage for the developer to create problems so that they can sell you the solution. That's why I disagree with Cr1tikal on this point. P2W is not ok in single player games.
The newer Assassin's Creed games come to mind with their grindy resource/material gathering, can't shake the feeling that they were made more grindy to make paying for them more appealing...

Never forget about the time that they removed microtransactions from Middle Earth Shadow of War. The game was clearly designed around the idea of forcing players to pay up, which became blatantly apparent when the ability to pay for microtransactions was removed. The game was virtually unplayable with how grindy it was, and it needed to be totally rebalanced
Microtransactions in general are scummy. I don't even like cosmetics. Games always used to have super cool exclusive cosmetics/gear but it was a reward for playing, not paying them money for pixels on a screen.

Not really, they were still good for a while even under Activision. They released the most popular WoW expansion under Activision, they made Starcraft 2 under Activision, Overwatch and Hearthstone were good games in their beginning, Heroes of the Storm is pretty fun still.

I've never even played Raid: Shadow Legends but this sounds exactly how I imagine it. Also that login daily thing sounds so illegal.
Raid is shockingly decent for F2P, they realized quick that if they don’t give serious rewards to F2P players the community would die and whales need F2P players to keep the game alive.
So it’s way worse.
F2P, in app purchases games thrive on the f2p population. Without them the community dies, even if the whales stay.
If someone wanted to bother, Blizzard probably could get sued for the daily login thing if it really does take away something that you paid for.
It would likely be a difficult lawsuit to win though because of Terms and Conditions.

If you want to be a top pvper yeah obviously you have to whale, but in summoners war at least, you can get plenty of good pve characters easily through f2p methods. Even through the story thats easy and doesn't take too long to complete.
this strategy is sooo scummy but also so smart. They start it off by giving players a super good deal which breaks the barrier from "I'm not paying anything for this game" to "ah whatever, I've already spent some money so what's another dollar or two". And only letting paying people into clans is also smart for multiple reasons, 1. of course people are gonna want to be in clans and will then pay for that alone but also 2. when you throw a bunch of pay to win players into a group, they will want to compete and always be the best, which means they will spend more and more money to get there. That wouldn't be the case if they let F2P players in because as soon as you spend just a little bit you are already on top. Damn this is so scummy

I remember seeing hobby magazine subscription with like a bit of a 3-6 months project you assemble bit by bit by getting every issues, be it model trains, planes, stuff like that. What's funny is that I have a friend who plays LoL almost 24/7, pretty much never goes out with few exceptions and just sits there, raging every day. Been going on for years.
And even he doesn't do that for Riot or LoL. He acknowledges pretty much everything about the company and the game and even his own situation, even if he doesn't truly try to fix it ever.

I do actually work in a grocery store near relatively near Blizzard's HQ in Irvine and get a lot of Blizzard employees as customers. And they are seriously trying to push a narrative that Blizzard is VERY "feminist" and an "LGBTQA+ Ally", actually, by making their employees not only wear Blizzard merchandise outside the office at all times (which I always thought was vaguely disturbing when I first learned about that Blizzard policy in my very pro-Blizzard animation college), but wearing shirts and having bumper stickers on their cars and tote bags with a rainbow or pink versions of the "Blizzard" logo to show support for the same female and non-binary employees that have allegedly been sexually harassed at the studio. And this is coming from a company that claimed it wasn't political during the "Free Hong Kong" controversy.
The real kicker is that, besides the Blizzards employees in their corporate-mandated Blizzard merchandise, my store is more populated by old, ultra-Republican, opinionated retirees that are more alarmed by "Aunt Jemima" syrup being re-branded as "Pearl Milling Company" syrup in response to the 2020 BLM protests than they are about the pandemic or climate change in an already-hot part of the country. In general, Orange County, California is disproportionately-Red county in otherwise Deep-Blue California and arguably even more extreme about it than Orange County, Florida. So you can imagine the stupid culture war nonsense I have to deal with at work every day when a jaded old guy in a "Let's Go Brandon" hat and shirt shares the same space as a Blizzard employee reluctantly promoting their employer's brand of corporate "woke-ness" by wearing rainbow Blizzard logos all over themselves.
And, to be clear, while I have inevitable drifted left just to annoy Orange County Boomers, I think corporate "woke-ness" in general is laughable and does more harm than good to the causes these companies claim to support, especially coming from a company that obviously deserves to be criticized for how it treats its employees and fans like modern Blizzard. As usual, I don't know what Blizzard is even trying to accomplish with virtue-signaling.

Still would be the easiest job in existence if not for how insanely-politically-minded both the customers and my co-workers are, seemingly incapable of talking to me about anything more pleasant than death, injustice or economic inflation. Why do “mobile” games HAVE to have micro-transactions? The only answer I’ve ever heard to that question is, “because it’s a mobile game.” That circular reasoning doesn’t answer the question.
These companies will continue to do this as long as people spend money on these micro-transactions. If you’re spending money on them, then you’re a large part of the problem. You’re creating the market that they’re taking advantage of.
I'm guessing that it's much faster for transactions to go through on phones. I don't know maybe they have their card saved in the play store and can just one tap to pay whereas on consoles n PC you'd have to verify, and most likely with your phone anyway

There’s a decent reason. Because most mobile games are free the company needs to make money, so they have ads and micro transactions. Now obviously some get really greedy and have hundreds of things to purchase, upwards of 100s of dollars for a single bundle. And since mobile games frequently care more about money than making a good game almost every multiplayer game is p2w
I remember when Blizzard was new and loving their games so much. It's like seeing a friend of yours die, but instead of just having the joy of "Hey, you remember Blizzard?" It's more like somebody dug up it's corpse, skinned it, and is parading around in it's rotting skin claiming he's Blizzard trying to steal your money for drugs.
I've often said watching these companies over the last 5-10 years is like watching old friends slowly falling into a drug dependency, lose everything they have spent their lives building one by one, and then in a finaly show of desperation when nothing is left they begin to reach out to those closest to them to exploit for as long as possible, rather than face the music and begin the healing process.
Imho it it actually much easier and preferable to have lost a good friend entirely out of the blue when they are in their prime. It certainly was for me personally; I'll always have the fond memories of my uncle that passed away, but probably always regret not having done (or being able to have do) more to save one of my best friends from college that actually happened to.
And it's not like we haven't been pleading with the industry that this road is a dead end, but as the old saying goes you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Digging through my old SNES games, pulling out Lost Vikings and Rock N Roll Racing. Ah, I'll bet the guys who made those classics moved on to a real game company a long time ago.

It is literally not good as a game or as a Diablo spinoff. It's a pre-existing sweatshop NetEase game from china skinned over with diablo references, and the absolute troglodytes still buying into Blizz products seriously think that's "a good game".
The standards of the gaming world have never been lower if people think Diablo Immortal is ""fun"" or in any way a 'new' game and not just a reskin of every other chinese mobile arpg.
