I'm a lead dev for a small indie game studio that has a small live service game. This is the worst attempt at overblown monetization for a game expansion that I've seen this year. There is no game DLC or expansion that is worth 250$. I feel badly for the community manager here, they're going to be used as a scape goat. It's higher up management that have made this call and so the community manager can either defend it and keep their job or call it out as what it is and lose their job, they don't really have a choice or a say. To put it simply, your players are never stupid. If they like your game enough they'll buy into many things, but any promise you made to your players at any point you will be expected to keep. It takes 1 misstep, 1 wrong thing said, or 1 poorly thought out plan executed to completely and permanently destroy any level of trust your players had and cause them to leave the community without second chance. If you as a developer or staff member for the studio are having to sit there and make excuses for something, or try to place specific labels onto things to try to make your community separate it, the people you are trying to convince will catch on to what you're trying to do and they'll no longer trust your word. I know first hand that maintaining that trust and relationship with your community is never an easy task and requires a lot of sacrifice on your part that they will never see or understand and it will likely go forever unsaid and unacknowledged, but that's something that comes with the territory if you want a loyal customer base. The game studios that are highly acclaimed and have loyal supporters are in that position because they genuinely care about keeping their word and they demonstrate this by consistently delivering upon it.

One thing that is not being talked about enough. BSG Updated their TOS in February 2024, which removed a clause that would allow for customers to pursue a refund in the event the game did not receive an official launch. This tells me that they were prepared that this might tank the game completely, and wanted an escape plan.
The writing has been on the wall for a while if you take a step back and look at it objectively. A couple UA-camrs have done deep dives on their finances and they make terrible monetary decisions like arena and big extravagant events and I think they were really banking on arena being wildly popular and bring in a bunch of players and then they could slowly dribble in micro transactions ( which is something Nikita has said multiple times would never happen) their gamble failed miserably and this might be the final nail in the coffin if they don’t make it free for EoD players and drop that price by at least 100-150$. This might be their final cash grab before they abandon the project for good.
@@brettsteuart if they had a stronger hand in anti cheat and straight up banning people, arena could've been better, plus the PVE can EASILY bring back many people. But no, they didn't just shoot themselves in the foot, they took a goddamn grenade launcher to it.
Just because they removed that from their TOS doesn't effect anyone who agreed to it when the verbiage was in the TOS when they purchased the game. If they attempt to enforce that change on legacy players then they are acting in bad faith and open themselves up for even more litigation. Either way, I think we just witnessed the fastest self implosion from a company ever.

It reminds me a lot of the Unity greed meltdown. Unity committed seppuku, and now BSG said hold my beer.
One thing that is not being talked about enough.
BSG Updated their TOS in February 2024, which removed a clause that would allow for customers to pursue a refund in the event the game did not receive an official launch. This tells me that they were prepared that this might tank the game completely, and wanted an escape plan.
Escape From Monetary Responsibility
Why don't they just officially release it? What is the difference?
Just because they removed that from their TOS doesn't effect anyone who agreed to it when the verbiage was in the TOS when they purchased the game. If they attempt to enforce that change on legacy players then they are acting in bad faith and open themselves up for even more litigation. Either way, I think we just witnessed the fastest self implosion from a company ever.
the worst part is, this sets a precedent for other game companies. AAA games have gone up $60 to $70, so now that a DLC has gone for $250, ultimate editions of games are gonna probably be more expensive

He's poured almost 8 years into this game, got EOD before we were married, and genuinely poured more time into this game than any other games he's ever played. I've sat and watched him play for countless hours while he told me about different armors and weapons. It is a game that even me, who never played it, held dear because my husband loved it so much. Even after our son was born, he would wear him in a carrier and whisper to him about the game as he played. So many fun nights and sweet memories, and BSG is just shitting on its loyal players. We're having our second boy in 3 months, we can't drop $250 on video games anymore, and especially after my husband got EOD and expected this DLC for free. Nikita is just shitting down his fans throats and expecting them to take it.
If they weren't so greedy this would be a super wholesome comment
I think these companies think "pay to win" means you pay and automatically win the match because how are they arguing this is not pay to win
Talk about a PR disaster, at the very least with the amount of backlash they have received they should at a minimum offer the new mode separately at a substantial reduced cost.
Corporations are inherently greedy, but when you have a PR disaster like this you don’t double down on that greed that’s how you lose even the most loyal customers.
It should be free for everyone who bought the EOD edition, no excuses.
I don't understand the fact that people are mad about not getting the new DLC for free if you bought the EoD, but not about the $250 price tag. Insane
@@Mr.DISRESPECT they are mad about both
@@Mr.DISRESPECT the 250 is a high prize, if u have the money idc if u buy it, but im owner of EOD and they practically lied to all of us, so yeah, idc about the price cuz im not gonna buy it
The way that fatass Nikita is handling this shit tells me his studio doesn't even have a PR department
as someone who plays this game since 2018 with 3k hours, Im very surprised of how quickly the company went from "cool but sometimes they want to do something questionable but the listen to the community so theyre cool" to "pure greed"
Nah they were always trash I pointed it out all the time on the BSG forums and the community blasted me for it. You just enjoyed th he game back then so you would overlook the shady shit they did, now that you don’t enjoy the game so much your can see the problems a lot easier.

Iam familiar with these developers. My first ever FPS game was called "Contract Wars" which I played back in the days. When the game started getting less popular, they made it very pay to win oriented. You could buy "spins" in the "roulette" which would give you "Skill Points" that you could use on your skill tree. People spent thousands of dollars on these spins to unluck every skill possible in the game such as "making no steps, seeing people through walls, having more HP, more armor, better grenades" You could tank a whole mag from a player that did not spend money, but you could kill them with 2 bullets.
Eyy I played that game with a friend in college. We spent 10 hours straight. It was fun! Didn't do it again. lol
They are the same devs?
@@everythingpony Yes, contract wars was them forever ago. A lot of the lore and stuff is borrowed from their as well. Shame they are killing the game now :(
Trying to argue that a thing you download within the client of the main game is not considered "Downloadable Content" is wild.
It's called Unheard Edition because the greediness is unheard of
If anyone ever pay for this you're basically enabling the greediest companies in gaming to copy this practice.
The developers are also russian and circumvent sanctions, their income goes towards separatist paramilitary groups in ukraine
If anyone ever pays for this I don't think a single person would pity them, more likely laugh hysterically till the buyer dies from the weight of their poor life choices
Guy name pink on UA-cam here is defending it like crazy. Calling everyone poor lol
There’s no way anyone with more than half a braincell is gonna pay that much.
@@hung8969of course!
That's typically the go-to.

Yeah, I'm poor so I bought EOD to support BSG back when tarkov was new.
I'm so broke lol.
As a an ex tarkov player with 5600+ hours I thank you so much for making this video. 4 years of promises and not one promise from bsg being fulfilled. Such a garbage greedy company. I learned the hard way. I always said it’s not goodbye it’s I’ll see you later tarkov.
This time it’s goodbye. I’ve never been more confident that I can finally escape tarkov. 😂
Cod released mw3 a 70 dollar dlc. Now tarkov with 250 dlc. We are doomed if we dont dunk these people
If only big name streamers had the stones to tell people to boycott these 💩games like Cod and Tarkov in boat droves.
@@Jules279nah bc the cod devs actually listen to the community outside of iw and it’s not even close to same as last year it’s not even comparable what tarkov is doing
At least $70 while overpriced af is still close to the usual price of AAA games. $250 is just outlandish. I'm pretty sure you could get nintendo switch for that.
but mw3 wasnt a "dlc" yes it was technically but for the content it had just at launch made it more than a whole new other game from mw2, eft pve on the other hand is a new "game mode" in tarkov and it doesnt even feature anything new either youre just basically only playing vs scavs only instead of scavs and other pmcs
@@Cyborg_J and tbh that’s always been the cost of dlc for cod it was always 15$ for every map pack which comes out to about 70$
Fun fact, DLC means Downloadable Content, meaning any content you download, meaning that even patches can be considered DLC.
What's really crazy is they announced they were taking EOD down for good, "so you better hurry up and grab it because this will be your last chance to get this edition". How many people ran out and bought EOD before it went down? I'm sure a LOT! Then they put this edition out afterwards and said nothing before taking down EOD about a newer edition coming right? Damn son
This is becoming a very common tactic in many places. There are bands that toured "for the last time" only to come back 4 years later. Just to squeeze every penny form you they can
People that succumb to FOMO tactics are weak and deserve to be mocked, but not more then the greedy companies that fucked them
My friend bought it and I almost did. Still sitting on standard. I am not installing patch 14.6

P2W is nothing new, but locking a gamemode behind a 250$ edition is ABSOLUTELY INSANE
I have 1700 hours in Tarkov. I quit playing about a year ago because I hated the direction the game was going. This is very bittersweet to me, because BSG has a history of not listening or communicating to their community. But it’s hard to see my favorite shooter of all time die.
Unlucky
@@bunnie117 very
It will be okay for you in the long long run. It won't completely die, it will just go through a transformation that it obviously needs badly due to being run into the ground by the very company that's supposed to make it iteratively better.
If fans can manage to snag the source code somehow there might be a possibility of community run servers after the game goes under. But even if that can't happen the other people like you who played tarkov won't let it die if it really was something special. Other developers will create better games inspired by the thing you love. It's all we can ever hope for.
tarkovs been fighting for literal years despite all of the stuff nikita and battlestate has done, i really don’t think this game is going to completely die anytime soon
Holy shit, 1700 is extremely unhealthy
Speaking of greedy companies, in Maplestory, the highest level was going to be reached (this is a incredibly huge deal, so much that Nexon was publicly announcing it), but the person who was about to reach it then edged for it an hour on stream by ranting about the problems he had with the game, and citing problems he had with it, then logged out and did not reach the final level. He was also level 299.99., please if you see this make a video about it
hey can you send a video on it or maybe the vod of the stream. This sounds pretty interesting
What??
So a person was reaching max level and he got many eyes on him and he complained about the game he grinded so long. Whats the problem?
@@Finnishmanni Not max level, but I guess this dude was going to be the first person to hit Level 300. Nexon I guess were promoting his stream and he used that as a platform to shit on its practices for about an hour then quit (seemingly permanently) with .007% left to go.
What a powermove
What does this have to do with greedy companies at all
Edge of Darkness edition was also, not just 100$, but closer to 150$ for a package of broken promises and lies.
The best is that Tarkov has free unofficial, community made "DLC" -> SPT-AKI, which let s you play Tarkov offline. I personally switched, because the cheater situation was not great on the live server.
Tarkov devs really got that “gotta be some doctors and lawyers that want our product” mentality
Hey. Don't blame the devs. This is a corporation's decision. Tarkov have a whole company behind. If it was a "team of 3 devs", sure. Blame all you want, but this not it.

when i first looked up tarkov the MULTITUDE of "special editions" giving you so much gear that you can lose almost instantly instantly turned me off
yeah, the game feels exactly like a mobile game- scamy-ish - especially the waiting time for base upgrades to go through and pay to get more inventory space etc
To be fair it made sense when the bonuses were pretty minuscule, I can’t say either of the non base versions before this debacle really gave much of an advantage. I started on the base version when the game came out and slowly upgraded version over the years and it always felt relatively the same
Well the main selling point of the editions where increased "prison pocket" storage and access to all future dlcs, the extra few items you get at the start really isn't the focus.
There was only one special edition which was EOD so idk wtf you're talking about

I’ll never understand why people will pay these ridiculous prices for dlc. Like, I’d rather use that money to buy a new game. Or two, or four.

@@RayneNikole exactly, plus most people dont realize how much these whales spend to begin with.
