As someone who has remanufactured plastic automobile bumpers professionally since 1990, I can absolutely tell you this is not the correct way to repair a plastic part. I won't even go into the melting of the styrofoam as a filler for the hole. The correct way would be to cut a piece of plastic to match the hole you cut, glue it in place, bevel out the seams and use a plastic welding rod to fill in the bevels then sand the weld down flush. You can use wire mesh for reinforcement if you like. Then a plastic body filler should be used on the outside. Sand smooth, Prime and paint

Fixed my beloved old toaster with baking soda and superglue. The handle broke off,so I put her on her back, and sprinkled baking soda on the stub inside the slot, and then put what was left of the handle in the baking soda, and dripped superglue into the soda, and the handle is now glued rock solid to the stub.
I believe you will be very happy after fixing your oven handle. The combination of super glue and baking soda creates a very strong bond. In addition to baking soda, you can replace it with styrofoam, sawdust, pencil charcoal powder, it is also very strong. Have a good day!
@@GausDIY I should mention this was the second repair. I originally used epoxy, and that worked well. The repair failed because the plastic of the toaster handle failed, not the epoxy! Hope the same failure doesn't happen with my latest repair!
@@GausDIY My first experience with superglue and baking soda was about a year ago. I dropped my fav hard plastic hairbrush in the sink, and it broke in two. I could not find a similar brush online. The melt the plastic and add the mesh is good leave the styro foam out get more plastic and make a patch and weld/melt it in. There are also staples that can be melted in with a presise cut patch. Its fun no xylene or styro foam or superglue needed.
Just like I see guys doing all the time and still it’s the long way. A mechanic stitched a cracked under bumper panel with zip ties one time, it works - now I can pretty it up.
Wow. The melting the styrafoam in the acetone is very similar to doing it with gasoline. You get a slimy putty that is extremely flammable and will not go out if lit on fire, my friend and I Used to twist it around the end of a big branch and use it as a exploring torch as a teenager😊
when you were teens, you probably didn't know that EPS (expanded polystyrene foam, a.k.a. tradename Styrofoam) mixed with gasoline and benzene makes the notorious Napalm
@@erwincarrasco8142 it's nasty stuff - don't breathe it in. Do it outside or a well-ventilated area. All petroleum-based products are potential carcinogens.
I used to have a body shop and always charged a flat $120 for bumper repair and my best paint match. If they're charging more, they're ripping people off.

I have repaired nasty plastic bumper damage a few times using plastic soldering irons (i have a couple of versions from AliExpress) and plastic filler rods & the same mesh used in this vid. I finish off with specific plastic repair bondo to the face surface & sand always using a sanding block (never just using your hand) with the lowest grit 600 to allow good grip. Always use adhension promotor before applying primer and then block that back ready for colour & then clear.
I used fiberglass bondo on a large crack in a plastic rear bumper, that is first I used a piece of metal fastened with pop rivets on the inside, then fiberglass bondo and then some fine grade bondo, before paint. It is hardly noticeable.

Acetone is better and less noxious to use. Xylene is so aggressive that any residuals that get trapped in the Styrofoam could very well eat into the bumper plastic itself - or weaken (soften) it enough that it deforms. It can also cause the spray paint to fail. Granted, acetone off-gasses slower than xylene, making the setting / drying time longer, but it's worth waiting. You can speed it up with a heat gun, which obviously has it's own considerations. :))
the polystyrene resulting from the mix will be brittle, while the car bumper in the video is made from more flexible material... So it's better to choose a more flexible material for this type of repair.
The damaged part is made of ABS. Melted styrofoam, even with instant glue, will soon loosen and show up on it as an ugly mark. Better would be to find a piece of ABS, weld it into the hole and smooth it down with a soldering iron. Also, you should have sandpapered down the whole part to give the paintwork a key before spraying the repair job. The way it has been done here, the paint will soon peel off.
I don't know why not use the same xylene/styrofoam mixture to repair the outward facing part of the bumper instead of using super blue/styrofoam mixture.
