I don't know why, but I love when tricks go from "tas only, that's impossible for a human" to "here's how we teach new runners this trick". There's something so satisfying about it.
When people describe something that shouldn’t be intuitively impossible as impossible, that’s usually a good sign that said thing will be routine in the future. Think the sub-4 mile, or the sub-10 100m. Currently, the sub-2hr conditions-legal marathon. These barriers are always more psychological or technical than physical. Once cracked, these barriers almost always collapse forcefully. Once someone cracked that sub-4 mile, within a few years it was the minimum requirement to compete in any world-class race.
technicly, anything a tas can do, a human can do as well, things are labeld as "humanly impossiple" simply do to its large complexity or huge ammount of precision requiered
Ever heard of Geometry Dash? Because that happens every few months there
@@mr.battlecats5512 Do you think a human could press a button 30 times per second? Or do any movement at this rate at all?
@ I mean sure, consistent frame perfects at above 20 times a second are basicly impossible for humans, but that's not a factor in 99% of tas runs. Most simply require extreamly precise movement or framer perfect timing at exact intervals, stuff that while phossiple to do by a human, is so difficult that it's not really worth trying.
People already call out runners for cheating when they jump through piranha plants. I can only imagine the reaction to this lol
oh boy
That will cause some *Fiery* Issues
this will get the community pretty heated
If they call cheats passing through *_B L U E B A L L S_* in the impossible game then imagine passing through the fire bars

You would have thought with a game speedran to death like SMB would have been fully optimised in 2022, but there's always something to be found. The future of this game looks a little exciting now.
Imo, what makes SMB so special in comparison to other speedruns is how optimised it is. Not how much potential skips there could be. The whole reason it's so optimised is that there have not been any major skips found in 20 years or so
Speedrun to death. The passive voice uses the perfect tense. I have run the game. The game has been run. The game was run.
Game is hard. When you start running out of time to save, you have to start exploring seemingly ridiculous clips like this one. But it takes a lot lot lot of work before you start running out of time to save.
@@MuchWhittering we care. You deserve adulation.
I'm pretty sure I've heard before that the SMB TAS actually _is_ fully optimized? From what it sounds like in the video, it's just that this specific trick was thought to be TAS-only until some people tried to get it to work in live play
You'd think that some people would have glitched through the firebar by accident, but it's funny how that sort of thing doesn't seem to happen until you know it can be done. Before I started watching Mario speedrunning videos, I never knew that you could clip through pipes other than the one leading to the minus world, but then I managed to do it accidentally on a random playthrough one day despite never having done it in all the times I've played over the decades.
We have no idea how many players accidentally went thru that firebar throughout the years. I haven't touched this game in decades but I remember wonky stuff like this from my childhood where sometimes enemies and firebars just let you right thru, it's the weirdest thing in real time.
Like when Vinesauce played Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the first time, he glitched thru multiple walls in Hydrocity zone back to back, in a panic he just pulled a well executed TAS strat right out his behind. Then promptly died and could not do it again.
@@freedustin vinesauce just had some sort of divine blessing for accidentally doing TAS and frame perfect tricks from what I know, I don't really watch his content but got recommend a video of him doing a frame perfect trick on the slide race in SM64 apparently lmao
I remember accidentally doing it once when I was testing an NES my local store just let me have because they couldn't fix it. I am in no way skilled enough to TRY and do it but I think I got really lucky when I thought I was gonna die when I ran into a fire line and I just... Didn't?
It is not uncommon for casual players to stumble into tricks/glitches that would be viable for speedruns without realizing it. A relatively recent example of this would be "Boba-skip" in Metal Gear Solid 1, which got its name when a streamer that went by "Boba" accidentally stumbles into a massive skip while streaming a MGS playthrough. It's actually a really heartwarming story.
Stories like Boba's are the exception though, most of the time the player brushes it off as a "weird glitch" and the trick just kinda dies there as the player is either unable to reproduce the glitch or doesn't think of sharing it online.
@@webbowser8834 there is also the pewdipie skip in dark souls, where you can talk to an npc behind a door without opening it. Pewdipie discovered it by accident in a stream
I audibly let out a "what" when I saw the TAS go straight through the fire bar

The title succesfully tricked me into thinking that something completely new was found for smb1
Hyped for the splicing confession
Crazy how some skips are done through incredibly technical game manipulation, and others through pure schmovement
Discovering new techniques in classic games is always of peak interest. Kosmic is my favorite source for original SMB / SMB2 content, from game play to personally thorough explanations. Thanks to all the speedrunners for keeping good old smb alive 🎮🏅

Can’t wait for Summoning Salts video.
This kind of thing is why I am always skeptical when people say we've gotten a game to be perfectly optimized or that we've reached a limit in how far we can go. Even a game as old as SMB still has things to discover. It's a bit like physicists in the 1800s saying that we'd solved physics or, worse, all of science.
Well, smb1 any% hasn't had any new time saves found in like 14 years or something. Even if a new framerule got cracked at some point, it most likely wouldn't be possible without L+R. Smb1 is an exception case, most other games there's often room for new ideas
Solving science or physics is essentially impossible, while solving a Mario game from the 80's is doable. Sure, it's possible that SMB1 could have more timesave not incorporated into the TAS. Likely already solved though and even if more timesave is found it could be impossible for humans to pull off like L+R being required.
Spends hours on end researching video game levels, to save a few seconds. Love it.
The disparity in subs of speedruners at the end of the video really shows how niche the speedruning scene really is :(
The way they slip the hitbox through just reminds me of Touhou lol
Wtf I've been here last year?
Really sets a new bar of difficulty on the wr!
This man though, not even just using this for his own gain, but giving this information just around the world for a head start to be speedrunning this game. A true community player!
I was really hoping that this time save was going to be for Super Mario Bros. 1.
Congrats on being the first person to actually incorporate this in a WR run!
Yet another great vid
Fantastic video with clearly a lot of effort put into explaining everything in the voice over.
This really raises the bar in speed running
Mario the first parcour runner ever will never be forgotten. Gonna give my kids a Nintendo as soon as possible.
Ive seen multiple people complain that this video was for Smb2 and not Smb1 and that the video is clickbait, but there is no point in Smb1 where a firebar stops you for a few frames in Smb1 speedrunning (at least to my knowledge). Its impossible to be a video about Smb1
THANK YOU!
@@Kosmicd12 lol, have people been this annoyed in the comments?
@@julienbronsch5039 yes, it's apparently clickbait to deliver exactly what the title says, and every video with 8 bit mario has to be about smb1 any% (even though it's fire mario?) or else huge clickbait smh so sick of youtubers lying for views
I mean, it’s intentionally deceptive. Not the same as clickbait though,
I dont mind good ads like this in your videos. Good job.
This is really setting the “bar” high…
I remember doing this little trick sometime around last year.
I was playing the NSO SNES All-Stars Super Mario Bros port and was very puzzled by how I managed to not get hit by the fire bar. I even took a 30s clip right after because I was extremely confused as how Mario managed to go through it unharmed.
I didnt think it was such a big deal at the time, until I watched this video. It's honestly amazing how precise things have to be in order to get the best time. Bravo to those who are this skilled at this game, as a huge Mario fan, I respect yalls dedication!
It depends exactly where it was- the firebar travels farther per frame the farther from the center it is. Some spots also have it travel more than others. It's also easier while falling downwards onto it (higher velocity, perpendicular to it). I'd be interested in seeing the clip! 🙂
@@Kosmicd12 Update: So I found the clip, however, I must inform you that I was actually wrong about 1 thing. It's not a clip of the NES Super Mario Bros, it's actually a clip of me doing it in the All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. I don't know if you'd still be interested in seeing it cause I still went through the fire bar unharmed but I wasnt actually playing the NES Super Mario Bros, sorry about that.
Also, I don't know how I'd be able to show you the clip since I don't own a capture card. I can possibly upload it to UA-cam but I'd be recorded from my phone and in a not so great video quality.
It's alright if you no longer wanna see it, but if you do, make sure to update me so I can figure out a way to upload it.
Also, Ill make sure to edit my original comment so that it doesnt misinform anyone.
@@mudafucca4420 sure, ill watch it. If I had to guess it's probably near the left side and while falling. Or is it the very edge? Either way, yeah I'd like to see it :)
At first i though this was smb1 skip and nearly lost my mind. Still impressive tho
Without killing the hammer Bro, the parakoopa arrives on screen at 367 time. One frame after 368 ends
With killing the hammer Bro, the parakoopa arrives on screen a few frames also on 367. But this is a few frames after 368 ends.
I am sure this makes a difference. When you load something into memory does affect how they behave. You would need to spawn something into the game on the same frame but have different pre-actions to determine if it is the pre-actions that determine how something spawns in, not when it spawns in.
You need to remove the time element (ie spawning in on the same frame).
you had me thinking SMB1 got a new skip 😅
Drove me crazy watching this video. Ended up turning it up and hearing the metroid music in background
"Humanly impossible" they said, yet I interjected with a simple "speedrunners are built differently, they don't confine to regular human capabilities" and I was met with silence and awe.
0:40 Omg Kosmic exposed for splicing his UA-cam video… I can’t believe you edit your content. To think all these years I thought you were one of the greatest unedited youtubers on the platform, but you actually been doing TAV (tool assisted videos) and passing them off as unedited for years!
I’m extremely disappointed, today I lost a hero :(

Sleazy clickbait calling this an SMB video instead of an SMB2 video :/
I'm actually really excited for that mario bros 2 lore video. There's a ton in that game that is strange and has never shown up in any other game. I would love to hear the take of someone who's very familar with it.
Honestly I'm not *that* familiar with it, I just know that most people don't even know the full title of doki doki panic, let alone all the differences between the games. And there's a lot of misconceptions about 2j as well, so I want to clear up what I can.
"confess to splicing" he's finally coming out of the closet
"enemies or objects in levels can be effected by what comes earlier in the level"
This can sometimes apply to making levels in Mario Maker 2, which is actually awful when the interactions don't make sense like hitting a block and a koopa just changing direction. Making Kaizo in Mario Maker where everything NEEDS to be consistent or you get harassed by the players is already hard enough, but things like that happen in that game too. I hate it
This is such a clickbait
Why? because it's Mario 2 and not 1?
Guess Salt’s next vid is gonna be The History of SMB2J World Records

Hey, I know this really isn't your thing, but max coin runs in Super Mario Galaxy are actually really interesting. There's tons of out of bounds tricks you can do to grab coins you're not supposed to get in certain levels, there's a glitch with cannonballs that lets you get more coins from them than you're supposed to, and there's even a glitch with lily pads that takes hours to perform in order to get a few extra coins on a level in Honeyhive. It's really interesting, and a lot of this info can be found by viewing the records on Cyberscore, but is otherwise poorly documented.
