You need to stop the pipe clip as early as possible so you can load the warpzone on the last pixel of the world 3 pipe and then do a backwards fast-acceleration. Edit: I should mention that I didn't find this framerule save, KingOfJonnyBoy did. His video for it is titled "Walkathon 1-2g subpixel setup+ANOTHER framerule".
You also save another framerule in 4-2, but I doubt that anyone will even be able to do it in two segments, let alone the full level. There's a video by NotThinkAnything titled: "Super Mario Bros. Walkathon Lightning 4-2 Framerule Saved".

I learned about speed running stumbling on a kosmic video few years ago. Had no prior knowledge of any of it. Was normally only on yt for sports and older Rap from 90's. I didn't understand why he was eating pizza the way he was til i found out about 'passing mario in 5 minutes'. The community is fascinating and at same time hilarious af. Made me start playing video games again. Thanks again kosmic!

I think Happylee has a no left-press TAS, in 1-2 you use the big mario clip at the top of the wall thats usually done for minus world then warp to 5-1 in the middle pipe (faster since 4-2 warpzone can't be used)

I wonder how many 80s kids across the world got the original Mario bros, mostly used the d pad (because they were dumb kids) and never figured out running. The amount of kids that never got past 4-3 must be surprisingly high.
Speedwalking, or walkies, is a -run- -walk- playthrough of a game where you are not allowed to run in any way whatsoever. It was first popularized by professional speedrunner/walker Simpleflips in his aptly titled series, _Walkies_ in which he attempts to reach S Tier in Super Mario Maker *2* by simply walking through user-generated levels.
Imagine there’s a bus waiting for you at the end of every level, and it only leaves every 21 frames. This is like that, except Mario’s been self-conscious about his figure, so instead, he’s going to walk.
Thank you for the detailed explanation, cause for ppl, like me, who doesn't really know the game, it looks like Mario is just casual strolling through the levels 😅 but this really shows how much depth and knowledge os behind it. Ps: Fun fact: The "any%" category is the fastest one, and with this time of 6:54, he walked faster through the game than some other 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ 😊 and ties 1481th place on the official speedrun website

I remember when everyone, including Kosmic, thought “meme” categories were dumb. I remember having to fight hard against the status quo to get category extensions added as a thing. Now, it’s clear that these fun runs are amazing and full of unique tricks
I legitimately laughed out loud seeing that such a slow category immediately starts with a fast accel. It makes sense, but just looks so silly doing such advanced tech only to immediately get passed by a player that just uses the run button
My first time playing SMB was the deluxe version on the gameboy. I didn't learn about running until the 8-1 hole, it blew my mind that I completely missed the run button for so long.
I already knew you can't clear 4-3 cause thats where I was stuck when i was a kid. Never tried to use the B button on GBC deluxe version. When I finally found out the B button makes you run, it blew my mind!
I find the accusations of cheating to get over 1 tile gaps funny too. The skipping one tile gaps thing was something I knew as a kid, as someone who was not and still isn't a speedrunner. Mind you, I even knew this when the only versions I had access to were All-Stars and later Super Mario Bros Deluxe on gameboy color. So it is absolutely intentional.

I feel like you should have to walk along the bottom of the swimming area...and only swim over "brick" obstacles, unless you can somehow clip through them
i'm gonna be real . when NSO first came out , i handed my pro controller to my dad and he played a level of SMB1 and got to the top of the flag . i had played 1-1 before and wasnt able to get to the top of the flag , so i had asked him how he did that . that was how i found out SMB1 had a run button .
Im just surprised that when Nifski misses the fast accel at the beginning of 4-1 they immediately know they had, I guess it's because of the in game timer for the stage, but still impressive to me.
It's amazing that the walkathon run is nearly as good as my PB with the B button. At least according to NWC NES Edition splits where a number of "strategies unavailable" are in play.

Even when you consider Mario runs 60% faster but only finishes like 30% faster
