- Mike Day is at it again! This time he is turning his Winter Beater Porsche 944 into a staged rally car. The first step in the process is taking out the old motor and replacing it with a VW 2.5 20v I5 07K engine. Thanks to Boost Brothers Garage, the swap is pretty simple since they provide all the necessary pre-fabricated components to get the job done right.
In this episode, Mike tears down the old Porsche motor to find his broken throwout bearing. He also discovers in the 07K engine that his cams are trash and will need to find new ones along with a little modification to get the engine to fit.
Follow along in this multi episode series to watch the transformation.

Helped a buddy do up his RX7 oil pan that way. Just door hinges from home hardware and some sheet metal that was laying around. No more oil light, and a flying triangle engine with 7 HARD track seasons. 👌 mint.
Nice
Yup without TTRS harmonic balancer you'll throw belt at 7100rpm.. ask me how I know :)
thanks for the tip mate
Boosted brothers garage sells a billet tensioner pulley that helps also.
@ECS why it isn't @ECS Tuning.. nice try tho
Of course: start off with a cheap engine and throw a bunch of money and mods into it so it’s reliable, ffs, they’re vendors after all
ecs has their own belt tensioner limiter for this exact thing
You make it look so easy.. Cheers from the Netherlands!
It’s second nature for Mike.
This dudes always working on something cool. Love it
Love the 07k content
2 rally builds from 2 of my favorite channels? Hell yeah!
Hell yea!
Who else is doing a a rally build?

Finally, a 944 that doesn't make me say "meh". I5 sounds are glorious, especially with boost.
God dammit! I though I was over my 944 addiction.
Welcome back.
Not a chance
I owned a 944 and a 914 back in the day! Good days they were.
I'm glad to see this swap get more traction. I've been working mine for a while now. Time and money are always lacking for me. You guys are going to start and finish this buiilid before I'm close and I'm glad to be along for the ride!
Very random: those safety glasses are dope lol.
Awsome build, cant wait for updates
Here for the 944! Love it
Awesome job! Nice attention to detail, don't mill the walls too thin on those cast pieces!
This is just phenomenal! Ingenuity at its best.👊
I can't wait to see the finished product.
This is so amazing I NEED more of you
Been so excited for this :)
Very cool project! I like the way you are going about it. Cheers!
This is awesome.
Can’t wait to see it driving around town after the upgrades
Local guy, eh?
Subscribed for this build....
5 cylinder at WoT, the sound of 80s rallying from Audi.
I have watched this multiple times and each time I have enjoyed it more and more I want to do this to mines
but I don't have the skills to manufacture or craft the motor mounts and suspension and bellhousing adapter or entire bell housing
well thought out kit.
Well done.
I'd love to have an 07k swapped 944. However for the money and effort to build one i could have something else just or possibly more badass.
Sweet
Could’ve used an oil pan like that on my 944 turbo before I fried rod bearing #2 at the track.
the engine comes out easily from top without removing transaxle and torque tube!
Wonder if trick you do on 928 would work undo unbolt mounts trans n motor...lift body ..seen it done at 928 International
Let’s go 🙌
Yay!
I love this build (sub'd)
Yesssss
Very cool shit

That 9 broken friend!
Epa coming
F them. 😁
I think it’s after 1986
Should I get a turbo trans if I plan to do this?
Sneak up on it

Could you post the links for the Boost Brothers kits? Looking to do this for my 944 as well.
Cheers!
Here ya go: bit.ly/3zPvjna
How much was the total cost of the swap?? I am thinking about doing my '85.5 non-turbo...
If anyone's considering picking up one of these VW 07k engines, try to get one from a 2010 Jetta. The 2010 had a factory vacuum pump delete and electric power steering, discovered that while installing an IE intake kit this last weekend.
I fucking love you guys
Never knew Luck was a car guy.
What year of the 07k engine is needed for the swap kit?
Did you work at turner in amesbury? I’m from the area I think that’s where I seen you maybe?
Im not sure what your plan is (30 sec into the Video) but id go for a Rotry engine and a fuel tank up front to try to keep it 50 50, also the Rotary is lightweight and if youre going for rallye it probably lso wouldnt mind the occasional misshift and over revving. (compared to piston engines). Id also be thinking about either an electric Turbocharger or a Supercharger.
Or you could go for a Motorbike engine as theyre light weight and if you were to choose an air cooled engine itd be one less point of failure.
Great video! I want to fight the auto-focus on the camera tho
Please tell me which company from which car the Hydro Power Steering pump was installed?
Never seen or heard of this swap before. What are the advantages to this engine?
If you check out the boostbrothers channel Mike goes over them. Weight, position, power, etc
@@coreyhawk1134 thank you.
i guess if you don't want the threads you can insert a bolt then weld the bolt and then cut/trim/sand the bolt to be one with the other piece
The housing is aluminum.....
Just fill it with aluminum weld and cut it smooth.
What turbo are you running?
Coming up in the next video!
Looks like its ment to be there
hmm we used to just undo harness..remote shifter..undo half shafts engine mounts..and tilt up body..and we didnt have access to a lift like yours..ahh can do a 928 same way
this is great. nice to see the 07k get more swap attention. Plus Boost Bros is an ohio brand too. 👍🏼
I guess you probably dont know yet, but what's the ballpark you're looking at for cost?
Zach Jobe brought me here
Zach 😍
Porsche has all season tires?
I swear I’ve met this guy. Looks very familiar.
As someone who's not a VW nerd, this video editing was so confusing. I couldn't tell when you stopped talking about the Porsche engine and switched over to the VW one 😂
We appreciate the feedback and will make transitions clearer in the upcoming episodes!
I saw this on a forum… somewhere…
I don't get it! Why no dry sump? No oil froth from slushing around.
If you guys need an engine with a forged crank let me know. That motor looks roughhhh.
i need an engine with a forged crank :)
anyone else only able to hear the licc
I'm tired of engine swaps on lawnmower and such. Lift, I need a lift and a slab to mount it to. Dear Santa...
Should have LS swapped it
No, Audi has several better options than what these guys chose. Then again, they’re vendors so they encourage bad investments
My 944 was confiscated by a crack head friend's parents when I was 19 smh.....
07K is ghey (cheap engine that requires a ton of mods, do the math)
Just pay more for a AAN or 3B and cut down on 40% of the mods required to make any serious power.
After EPA gets the win, this car is illegal.
yeah and they are going to make hamburgers illegal too! Then they are going to make it against the law to say Merry Christmas. And, and and.. Don't buy that SEMA hype.
Why work on the junk
grassroots racing is out-of-pocket so it’s all about good junkyard hunting.
Because they’re vendors and make money off unsuspecting excited DIY’ers that are fine with spending money regularly, ending up putting in way more than they imagined
