What an amazing build! I've always loved the 944, but would have never thought to rally one until this series. But especially with that engine, it just works perfectly.
Awesome car! I never understood why Porsche didn't instal the Audi 5-cylinder in the 944 Turbo and 968 Turbo. I mean it's probably THE most iconic turbo engine of all time, you could even say it's to a large degree the turbo engine that made turbo engines famous.
@@vwjetta4138 I believe that the 924 was originally gonna have a Audi 5 cylinder, they even had a running test prototype but I don't know what happened.
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo that’s believeable, the Porsche 928 was also originally supposed to have a V10, so Porsche cutting it in half and putting that in the 924 is like what they did with the 928 V8 and cutting it in half for the 944
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo From what I know, I heard the 5 cylinder would break the torque tubes of the 924 gearbox so they had to go with a 4 cylinder instead
I owed 1985.5 Guards Red 944, installed a Phantom Grip Traction lock conversion, seemed to work ok. After some amount of modification I sold the car, I really wished I had kept it now. Sold it 2000 for $4700, but bought it none running for $2000.00 which was sorted pretty quickly the 944's have hot spot on the ECU, re-soldered the ECU board, and it started right up. Fast forward to 2007 after owning multiple 4000 quattros found a ur quattro locally for sale really cheap, since then I have been sorting it as it was a salvage title do to minor front end damage that broke the air dam, that part alone would have cost quite a bit new back in the early 90's and probably why the car has a salvage title. No worries, it's getting there, and they say is you don't need a radio if you own a 5 cylinder lol
I have a 89 944 turbo and i fantasize about swapping a 5 cylinder in one day. Glad to see you already have as i havent heard or seen any others doing so. Sick build!
Are you going to upgrade the suspension? Those thin little strut shafts aren't going to last long. I just sold my custom 944 Rally suspension a few months ago. Monotubes were massive. Took a beating and kept going.
One little thing you should have made! The Hella Rally Lights, where bether changed against an LED-Bar, and a Banana-Style Rear Wing. Or at least an 924 GTS LeMans rear Spoiler-Lip. But all in all 👍🥳🥳🤩🥳, I love it. Owning by myself an 1987 944 Celebration Edition in Zermatt-Silver with Studio Cloth interior ❤
We’ve had plenty 944 turbos pushing 350 at the wheels ,on stock tranny and axels with no problems. Once you get into 450+ at the wheels then you want to consider upgrading to a turbo S tranny (AOR). One of my customers is on his 3rd NA tranny in his v8 swapped 944, and he’s only pushing like 400 hp I believe
Are you running the standard transmission? The transmissions on these NA 944s are very dainty, and when upping power you usually go to a 944 Turbo transmission, but 350 HP is generally the limit for those. I'd love to have a closer look at the work in the back, including how the spare wheel tub was removed.
@@mikeday3644 Hopefully it will hold up, you should consider finding the weak point in the transaxle and offer a product to strengthen it. turbo and s2 trans are getting pretty pricy.
Fantastic build thank you for sharing the process. I was thinking of doing my own rally build and want to do it with a 944. Do you have any advice on how to keep the engine as stock as possible and what rally type would be best. I’m really new to all different qualifications and don’t really know where it would fit. Thanks.
I'm sure you've had an ARA tech look at the cage, but I think they may make you add taco gussets to the X in the roof. Super not fun to fail tech at the event for something like that so just a heads up.
Fantastic car!!!! Get some real wheels and gravel spec tires though man, the car deserves it!!!!! Never mind!! I see you already have!!! Bravo!!! The ultimate real world, back roads car!!!!
Very difficult. If the Audi power train were used, the engine would need to be moved far forward because the transmission on the 944 is in back and the Audi trans sits just behind the engine which’s mounted far forward (and that by the way is the weak but inherent dynamic of the Audi quattro). 4WD trucks deal with this with drive shafts going to front differentials out of the trans, and there is NO room for this on a 944. The newest Nissan (Skyline) GTR that just went out of production for example, does have a rear mounted gearbox like the 944, and for all wheel drive, it has a second drive shaft coming out of the rear transaxle coming BACK to the front of the car to drive the front wheels with a front diff. This is pretty much what would be needed for an AWD 944. A total front redesign would be needed because the steering rack is in front of the subframe that not only ties the front together but supports the engine where the front diff would be needed. No. It would be a design mess.
That said, the 944 does use the Audi powertrain, but without the Quattro rear diff, and driveshaft. It takes the Audi transmission and caps off the rear power take off and moves the whole transaxle to the back of the car, hung under the fuel tank. Then it has a custom bell housing covering the clutch (or torque converter - yuck) and a solid drive shaft mounted with ball bearings in a solid steel tube connecting the engine/bell housing housing and transmission/transaxle. Quattro would not work in a 944 unless you turned everything 180 degrees and made a 911 C4 /959 style powertrain with the engine in the rear. I think there actually is a rear engine 2WD rear drive 924/944 prototype in the Porsche Museum or at least Porsche tried a rear engine 924…

Very satisfying sounds, Mike! Have you run into any Porsche guys who ask about the engine? Curious how they'd respond.
