The new hellcat came out and 2 friends bought one and the new corvette supercharged and both where in the dust 20mph roll-140 they barely seen taillights. I believe before the car was stolen it weighed in at 2,000lbs with my tiny butt in it half tank "12gallons" but there was nothing but a wheel, gear lever and motor it was all racecar. Later i found a 87 with 40k miles no motor and she became my baby 3klbs with 606bhp still smoking anything bought. Because she is built
I used to drive a 944 S2 but always felt it was underpowered. Also the shift was heavy work. Recently I watched a video of someone who had put an LS in a DeLorean... I sat in a DeLorean and felt the lack of comfortable headroom. My 944 S2 was very comfortable for me. If I had an LS in it today I would have kept it.
The LS engine series is the best thing to come out of the big bank and corporate bailouts of the 08 recession. Worldwide renown for their inexpensive price, small physical size, light weight, high durability, and of course high power and torque output. And the irony isn't lost on me, all the decades of the dual overhead cams and a 4 or 5 valves per cylinder running circles around american engine technology until the turbo arrived which turned out to be particularly well suited for pushrod engines and effectively snubbed half a century of complex head development. With efficient boost generation via a turbo supercharger making use of wasted energy from the exhaust gas extra valves and cams become more of a reliability liability and expense and unneeded complexity than an advantage. Don't get me wrong a K24 can make 500HP with stock internals which is impressive for a 4 cylinder, but those things are so tall the overall engine size is about the same as an LS just a different shape that actually makes them more difficult to fit into some cars since it's especially long on one dimension, which is why they used to slant engines when they used to make more inline ones. And if you're going to be taking up the same amount of space in the engine bay, might as well get an engine that has more power and way more torque. And Honda is really just an exception, their reliability is insane which is how they can be boosted so high with stock internals or just pistons and rods. No other 4 cylinder manufacturer makes engines that strong and reliable that you can just do that. It's nice to see you guys enjoying the car it looks really fun to drive. 944 is one of the best looking cars of all time and its size and weight are about as perfect as it gets along with RX7s. But when does a 2 door sports car not look good ya know. They always look good as long as they were designed half decent.
That was a great ending and a fantastic car. I've always thought about doing this and have spent many nights looking online at 944's for sale. Maybe one day...

There are custom shops over in Europe that do similar things. One outfit puts an LS in the Jensen Interceptor. I believe there is one doing the same to TVR's, and a few other complete custom shops that basically take LS's and put them into smaller compact sports cars to create glorious monsters. Carroll Shelby found that magic mix decades ago. I'm surprised it hasn't been done more often than it is. Especially with LS swaps being SO popular these days. Outside of Mazda Miatas and RX7's i've not seen it done in as many one-offs as should be. Love that this was done in a 944. I'd REALLY like to see it done in a 928.
Now this is a 944 that looks fun! Though I think I would be a bit wary of a hard launch from a dig, not sure how much that trans axle can take. Great swap it fits like it was meant to be there.

I keep coming back to this video. I'm sooo close to having mine finished, just need an exhaust and I gotta figure out a way to get the hood on. Ahhhh I need to finish it!
This was my 1st car and moment i had the money senior in high school i did exactly this.
450bhp LS under the hood of my 1986 and boy it was a monster when stripped to just a chassis and engine.
@Anita Ayon comming soon to youtube later this summer
It's beautiful. I'm jealous. I hope to own a resto-mod some day.
You know the LS1 came out in 1997 right?
Great review guys. But I noticed one of your cam is pixelating. Hope you guys can remedy that and keep up the great work
I love everything but the exhaust tip. Well done. Amazing. Now everyone will want one.
This has been my dream since I was 16, 944 with the ls engine. Looks like alot of fun.
"I kinda have to, don't I?" lolol Todd I freaking love you
That was a great ending and a fantastic car. I've always thought about doing this and have spent many nights looking online at 944's for sale. Maybe one day...
always been a fan of the 944, recently been considering doing an LS swap into an RX7 FC, lots of support and kits for that because it's kinda popular. Any kits or info available to do the swap in a 944 like this?
I had an 88 944S, I loved it, what a motor. 👍
They were great handling cars, so extra power would be a great thing.
Been waiting for this one since it was filmed! Gonna have to convince Jeff to let me have a go at the next one ;)
If you are going to improve perfection, this is a great way to do it.
WOW ! what a fantastic idea !! Gotta send this video to a buddy who has a 944.
Honestly, beats putting the LS motor in a 60's Chevelle like a colleague did. REALLY!
Fantastic review guys. Loved seeing Todd's reactions to the sheer insanity.
What a monster! Nice review guys!
I did. I installed 20” 911 wheels with 325s on the rear. It’s very fun to drive. The only thing I don’t like about it is first gear is really low and short
Very rare to see something so tasteful. I love it.
When you absolutely have to Porsche your LS.
Does anyone know where to get the engine mounts and adapters needed for the swap?
Ethan Runner Texas Performance Concepts
Now this is a 944 that looks fun! Though I think I would be a bit wary of a hard launch from a dig, not sure how much
that trans axle can take. Great swap it fits like it was meant to be there.
I love that he kept the popups
I loved the front engined Porsches of that era.
Chris Porter, Detroit Speed's PM, has an LS swapped, 944 race car that he calls the "Poorvette." It is goals. This only reinforces my desire to build one of these.
I would love to build one of these. The 944 was my ‘goal’ car when I was in college, but I never bought one. But now, many years later, I would love to find a nice 944 and make it into something like this.
Great video! Nice work guys.
Gosh I have an an LS2. What should I swap it into? This is a killer project!
Been thinking about selling my ‘83-944. Now I’m thinking this is its destiny...
I love that at a hipshot it seems like the Porsche purist is absolutely is enthralled with it, and Todd is confused. But then love prevails.
Paul. Your announcement made me so happy!
Cool porsche although watching you guys enjoy the ls3 powered 944 I cant say my 3200 lb 450 hp ls3 powered corvette makes me feel the same way in every mile of the 132k miles i put on since new. I just the general build it for me...still admiring this resto mod...what did the owner spend and how much time? Thanks for the fun unique review of the resto mod 944
Awesome!!! Great build and looks like a lot of fun to drive!
I've got a sweet '87 944 in my garage - sitting since '09 due to my wife mowing the engine - this car was a gutless wonder before and now I am not sure if it's worth rebuilding the engine. I am aware of a shop in Vegas that does 977-LS mods for while now; however, I don't drive a stick, and have been really thinking of going electric... but, the LS-mod has had me thinking a lot about what this car really needs -- some adrenaline-fueled anger & speed.
I own a 1986 Porsche 944 na and it definitely needs more power (a better sound too because 4 cylinder motor...)
An LS swap on a 944 seems to be a great idea... Having a V8 sound, 100s more hp and plenty of parts to tune your engine... I need that now!
I love this. I had a '83 and got beat by Dodge Ominis. I hated that. Loved driving it until I had to accelerate out of a corner. This sure solves that problem.
“Yikes and hallelujah all at the same time! Is that a thing?” LOL
I had a 88 turbo s. 2-3 headgaskets later sold it. Awesome car, amazing balance, pretty fast. Terrible cooling and gasket issues. I would be surprised if the balance on a heavy motor like this made it the same but yeah reliable and strong.
Tbh I'd put the sr20det instead to keep it 4 cylinders
You guys deserve so many more subs. just sayin
Thank you. We appreciate the compliment and are glad to have you watching!
The video over exposure lines wasn't taking out?
Eric Wang that was some weird Go Pro thing we never figured out. Fortunely or unfortunately, that was one of the ones that was stolen lol
The 86 comparison is super on brand 😂
Watching this I can’t help but think of my beloved mint ‘91 318is in my garage with its stock motor that runs great but still...
944's are great cars. Miss mine
I have a 2010 C-6 that I just drove 25,000 miles in the last two summers. Sounds like the 944 LS3 is even quicker. Great fun. Ps - wife and I really enjoy your show.
