Lex Friedman is arguing emotionally because wearing a tie is part of his identity
Not only Danaher actually AGREES with Joe Rogan and GSP here, but he basically says "there are plenty of other ways to choke than with a tie", that's true, if you're a black belt in JJB; which 99.99% of the population is not. Someone inexperienced will grab your tie and make you regret it quickly.
@@JeanRausis yeah but not really from a choking point of view. It can't be easy to choke a strong, resisting person with a tie while being hit. Most people aren't even thinking about choking when they get into a fight.

I don't really agree with the title's framing. Joe Rogan never said the tie choke was MOST effective, but that the tie has vulnerabilities which can be exploited in a street fight situation. Danaher actually AGREES but says using the tie itself as the choking mechanism (especially in front) leaves you vulnerable and therefore is not effective. Danaher even spoke about clip-on ties... clearly a normal tie does expose some risk.

At this point I'm quite sure Lex misrepresents what Joe had said intentionally as a running joke.
A clip on tie could still be used to strangle a person just become it unclipps does not mean it cannot be wrapped around the neck area.
A neck tie is a massive risk in a fight and has been know for a long time.
if you grab my tie your arm will likely be stiff which leaves your arm extremely vulnerable to be broken

The tie is attached to the end of the lever with the lever being the whole body. You can control someone so easily if they are wearing a tie, not only to choke them, but just to break them down.

Wearing a tie in a fight with someone who knows how to fight is like being in a Thai head clinch that you can't escape and you're just going to be eating a knee over and over.
Knees are considered a delicacy in northern Finland so honestly that sounds like a good problem to have.

Absolutely every bouncer/security I’ve ever seen in a tie... was wearing a clip-on tie. For good reason.
Imagine a person is in a fight and ends up in a funny position they could be held up by their tie which would cut their blood supply or cause choking.

As a judo guy I can say a tie is an easy way to off balance you wich makes you throwable.

I was a police officer for 30 years. On the street we wore a tie with a thin elastic strap. If grabbed by an offender it just snapped and came off.
Rogan as well meant that the Tie is a disadvantage in general.. the choking was just an example of it...

Desperation is a sad thing no doubt
Having done some judo but never with a tie, it seems that the tie would be a perfect handle for Lex's favourite throw, Seoi Nage. Regarding the choke idea with ties. Again, never worn a tie with a gi, but can't see how you can make the tie tighter (to create a choke) and can imagine the tie rotating a lot. I agree with John, head control seems to be higher percentage threat.
Lex needs to come up with a system for using the tie in grappling and then sell an instructional on BJJ fanatics!
I actually did end a 'fight' by doing just that, but with a lanyard. The guy was much more skilled than me...he rolled my punches and checked my kicks with ease....so, I threw a faint overhand right, ducked, switched stances and caught him by his lanyard....then dislocated my elbow pulling the guy down.
also, I was legally armed with a gun, so that was the real force multiplier.

The thing is about a tie is it’s not that effective initially the tie wouldn’t be the first thing you wanna grab for it would just be something you would use while grabbing someone to manipulate them further than you already are

I think what Rogan was trying to say was he could choke the shit out of Lex with his tie, not knowing Lex is a BJJ black belt. After Lex told him the conversation changed.
I think they are over thinking this, mostly it would be used for the element of surprise. I recall being on parade in our dress greens. While being inspected by the Sgt or someone of rank. They would give a pull on your tie to see if it was a real tie. Of course the element of surprise would pull you forward. The clip on would come off. So it was easy to tell who was wearing the regulation tie. lol
If they get your back in a street fight and wrap your tie around your neck...you are in serious trouble. A regular tie is already secured around your neck...it only needs a little pressure to restrict blood flow. I'm going with Rogan on this one.
If someone can get ahold of your tie they control your center from a distance without u being able to reach them: major problem. lol. Just a dog on a leash. Not only that, it's like a choker chain. Doesn't it get tighter the more one restrains?

having a tie is simply a handle and a collar to choke with. an extra one. a person without a tie does not have these grips. simply looking at it mathematically there is more area to choke with. a tie is simply, more dangerous than not wearing a tie.

In defence of Joe (can probably look after himself:) once someone has hold of a tie in a fight you can't be assuming that everyone stays standing up and facing each other throughout and not drunk and making it up and getting a bit strangled. I'd be more of a running away shoes fan
A tie can be pulled in any direction or even twisted around behind the person. It can also be looped around the neck area so as to control a person's head movement. Now Imagine somebody using their hands to strangle a person and also has access to the tie.
The argument of there are more effective ways to strangle does not mean anything.
Finally, the answer.
I don't think there's an easy answer. I don't agree that a snap down would be a big risk, every experienced BJJ player knows that snap downs don't work on people with good posture, they work on wrestlers who's stance put them either at risk of putting weight over their knees or close to it. To snap someone with posture you're 1) exposing yourself to attacks 2) your arm better be stronger than their legs, core, back and upper chest muscles, or if you do a proper snap down with your hips you better... 3) You better have a defense ready with one arm that protects you against Judo throws, pummeling, punches etc.
At the same time, if you're caught off guard by also an experienced grappler, they will only grab and pull on the tie at the right moment when your posture is off or you're not expecting it and ready... so it can also be very deadly! lol
Short answer: If you're not John Wick, maybe don't wear a tie to a fight!

I think the point you're missing is that Joe would choke someone out with their tie only for the psychological damage.
I'm sure most door men have clip on ties for this reason.
GSP does not need to grab your tie in a street fight to beat you down.
I think Joe has a point , normal people doesn't know mma or jiu-jitsu and they can grab that tie and actualy try to choke you , believe you me a lot of people trying to choke some others using that tie ,in hightschool that was a basic move ,so i think Joe Rogan has a point

It is funny that Danaher pretty much says a tie is bad in a street fight, but Lex holds on purely to the fact Danaher agrees it's not ideal for choking. But that's literally the only thing he disagreed with in regards to Rogan and GSP's thoughts about ties in a fight. Everything else he says about a tie is that it's not ideal. Even mentions if you need to wear a tie-like item to use a clip on or something entirely different from a long tie like a bow tie. Lol.

I'm not surprised that he agreed with GSP but not Rogan. Rogan just kinda says whatever's cool half the time. Even he admits it.
He does not like Rogan and showed that in an podcast but came of as arrogant and a crap talker.

A necktie is a risk in a fight no matter what expert tries to claim something is more effective. You could be punched and then strangled with the tie.
