Linda Perry has a fascinating career story. She really struggled to have mainstream hits with her own bands and solo songs, and then came to terms with the path of helping other artists shine.
She found her lane no doubt. She couldn’t form a group of ladies that suited her artistic vision. But she found a way to fit her songs to the right artists. She’s the billy bean of songwriting
Linda Perry is right up there when it comes to the greatest singing voices. Now she mostly writes for other artists. A lot of great selling songs as well. She's very talented!
Linda Perry shows what is what in the music industry. A brilliant songwriter, an extremely gifted singer, but she hit it with only one song at the mike, but made a ton of money writing, producing and producing for others.
Dang. This video really crystalized what I like about your channel. Brad is the lawful good type looking for structure and meaning. Lex is the chaotic good type looking for freedom and feeling. Both of you together creates a really fun vibe as you both know and appreciate the other. Bless you both, and keep rocking!
This song was a smash hit on the radio ... and stuff like this brings me back to my high school years. We were slackers, and finding solace and self expression. It's cool that you picked this, cause it really brings back some humble beginnings. Listen to Blind Melon "No Rain" or Smashing Pumpkins "Today" for similar vibes.
The struggles were real back in the day for women rock bands! Linda has wrote a lot of great songs for other artists and produced them as well! She deserves to be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame...
Just brings back memories. Being in my mid 20s and going to parties and raves with friends. Early 90s was a great time for music. 4 Non Blondes also covered Misty Mountain Hop. And I wish more women wore hats. Thanks for doing this Brad and Lex.
The lead singer, Linda Perry, is a music icon. When she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Lady Gaga sang this song in her honor. I was a little gay, hispanic kid when this came out and it was such great, feel-good song that I could identify with. I still belt this out with my friends when it comes on at the bar or at karaoke or on the radio. 🥰
I tell you, its the 90s. Give it up to all the fantastic female artists and bands. There has never been a decade where so many female artists had shined brighter. Shania twain, Whitney Houston, alanis morissette, 4 non blondes, Gwen Stefani (no doubt), Celine Deon, Lyanne Ryhmes, missy Elliott, cher (solo), sara McLachlan, TLC and I'm sure im missing many others, this decade was the greatest decade of music for women. That aside, we also had the birth of grunge; nirvana, soundgarden, Chris Connell (sound garden) and his covers as well as acoustic versions, and my alltime favorite pearl jam. Eddie Vedder still going strong today. The 90s ruled music and the women were rocking harder than ever before. 🤘
This song, Hunger Strike, and Ghost of Tom Joad were my voices in my twenties. Now in my 40’s, I listen to them every 2-3 months to keep me from becoming “comfortably numb”.
The thing that keeps me coming back to your videos, is that I genuinely care about your feelings for all these songs I have loved so much. The only person luckier than Lex for having Brad, is Brad for having Lex! Cheers!
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Lex's break down during the second break!!!! This was before Linda Perry was a huge producer, and like Lex said about herself growing up, feeling different. Not that you guys are acting snooty, or pretentious, AT ALL, just saying it's refreshing to hear intelligent commentary from regular folks, while enjoying a song and reaction, without wading through a long educational video or some dry book.. Cheers!!
I think they knew but were skirting around it with subtle nods about the singer's perspective, especially Brad, he knew right away via his glances and gestures.
Linda Perry is amazing writer! Wrote songs for many artists and also was very influential in Pink’s career! Incredible how people get little credit when they aren’t the front line! Love this song! Thanks lex , for getting it!
I second that emotion. There's nothing more gratifying than seeing someone figure out the beauty of somebody else's art :) Lex put not only a smile on my face, but a caress to my soul :) #namaste!
"get little credit when they aren’t the front line" They might not want to be on the front line and often, songwriters get paid per song plus they get royalties for life where singers get paid per performance. Over a lifetime the songwriter can earn more and still go out in public. Assuming money is a motivating factor.
This may be hard to fathom, but not so very long ago being an out lesbian was a rarity. Add to that the usual reckoning of getting to age 25, which feels like it should be "adulthood" and not having all the answers, and this song makes more sense. I was 25 when this song came out, and it resonated with me. The mixture of being physically in one's prime, independent, full of potential and yet still very much trying to figure out the world and myself was well encapsulated in this song.
I was aboard USS AMERICA (CV-66) in 1992-94. During the 1993 deployment we pulled pier side in Trieste, IT in September-October. The hottest bar in the city was packed with AMERICA sailors 24/7. They spilled out onto the streets all day and night. And I’d swear that THIS song played on a 24/7 loop, inside and outside the bar. Sailors would sing along at the top of their lungs. The off we went to Somalia. What different worlds.
When I hear this ladys voice I get goose bumps. Here voice just amazes me. I just saw a tribute band do this song and the girl hit it so well I had tears in my eyes. This is just a wonderful song and an amazing lady.

I seem to remember Dave Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) performing that with her and it being a pretty good version. Think a band Placebo covered it in the '90s too, and that was also a good version.
So for those who don’t get it: she wrote this song about what she was going through at the time. Obviously, her circumstances have since changed. SMH This song represents the angst and desperation she was feeling. Even people who don’t experience the same things she dealt with can identify with her frustration of trying to navigate through a world where the odds seem stacked against you. Her success was not the result of having her talent supported by record execs or the powers in charge, but by the grassroots fan support for this incredible song-which sums up a feeling that’s not always easy to express. Not everyone’s in tune with their emotions, but certainly those who are can understand exactly what this song is trying to convey. This song went to #1 in a number of countries. The US was the only where they didn’t even make the top 10 on the main charts according to billboard tracking.
5:34 My dad was in the Army and I spent 4th-6th grade in Germany and 8th-10th grade in Belgium. There was a huge culture shock moving back to the States for me. I totally understand what you mean!
Loved your reaction to this group. First time I heard them was back when they first came out back in 1989 and I was in love with Linda Perry's voice! You have to do their rendition of Led Zeppelin's Misty Mountain Hop, you will NOT regret it!
Lex, you got it. Music is sound first, sound that moves you...and I love your reactions and how you most times, nail the meaning, even deep songs. Lex ur a ⭐️

This is one of the best reactions I've ever seen. Y'all really listened to the lyrics and then tried to connect some dots to your own lived experiences. It was really introspective without being hokey. Excellent!
This was the karaoke song for all the women with awesome voices (and many who couldn't sing for shite as well) in the 90's. Always reminds me of those Saturday nights at the bar when karaoke was just coming up. Good song!
This was the ultimate sing-along song in bars and clubs all over the world in the early 90s. Linda Perry, like, Butch Walker, are both great artists, who made their nut writing everyone else's songs.
You can literally watch people grow as they hear this song the first time. The songwriter has a clear understanding of the role of rock music has had on social change. From her view of the early 80s, she is saying that there is a lot still to be done.✌️🎸
This is one of my go to karokee songs, so relevant, especially now and days! When I finally got up the nerve to sing i sang this and blew the roof off cuz i can do the range but i totally did not expect the crowd reaction.

I saw this band perform in a north London gay bar in the 90’s , man those days were fantastic, you two are cool and I love your reactions to music of my era. I wish you could feel some of the wisdom and magic from those times when we were more free❤
Great Reaction Brad &Lex.❤ I am surprised Brad didnt compare Linda Perry to his fave, Alanis! This was 1993 and Alanis did not hit until 1995 with 'You Oughta Know' Maybe this reaction was before AM
Lex, I’ve watched this a couple of times now, and I want to encourage you to keep the trail you’re on. You have a finger on something we all are trying to figure out, but you’ve got a platform. Stay the trail, lady. You and B-Rad are helping. Thank you.
Always loved her voice and this song. BTW, these two seem to perfectly compliment each other. She provides the spice and flavor, and he is the flour that makes a great recipe and holds the cake together.
Lex, check out Lilith Fair in the 90s, and all-girl rock venue that was big - there was tons of girl-rock stuff going on back then. This made em think of that.
I LOVE Linda Perry... Recently she was in a magazine called 'rape op'.. and I learned so much more about her.. So very cool.. good to see this reaction!!
One of my favorite artists period... She is the kind of gorgeous that totally comes from within... My God! Women relate to her best I think. That being said, I'm grateful for what I get from what she puts out.
Linda Perry is my girl crush! I even told my husband I’m like I fucking love that woman. She is so talented so much style about her just everything she is the whole package and that voice, wow! I loved her in 4 Non Blondes of course that’s back in the day how we were introduced to her but her solo career are hands-down, the best if you haven’t heard her as a solo artist, you need to listen to that!
P!nk loves Linda Perry and there's a FANTASTIC live, in-concert version of P!nk covering this on UA-cam. Also, 4 Non Blondes does a rocking cover of Led Zep's 'Misty Mountain Hop'.
You know I love you guys, if you read comments, I'm all over your channel, subbed after the first watch, never disappointed. You all jam the kind of music I love, I am so happy you guys are on here doing this. Maybe the most perfect music reaction channel. JUST maybe...
Linda Perry is a brilliant songwriter and performer. Watch her sing “It Hurts” at the guitar centre, to feel the emotion in her voice. (Warning - explicit lyrics)
Fun Facts: 1 - Linda Perry, the lead singer for 4 non blondes is well known in the music industry as an amazing songwriter and has many hit songs by the artists she wrote for. 2 - 4 Non-Blondes was the first ever all lesbian band to hit the charts. 3 - Linda was married to Sarah Gilbert (Roseanne, and for the show The Talk) they have two kids together. They have since divorced.
I grew up in the 90s and am a fellow musician... It's always amazing to see appreciation of that decade... A lot of great music from all genres... You have made a fan out of me!
This video is the most early 90s thing I've ever seen.
Yup
It's one of the first hits for the coattail riding/poser wave that followed the Seattle bands, for sure.
@@chrisharris7931 it definitely has that Cali post-grunge feel, like Counting Crows, Bush, and Candlebox
Absolutely. And your comment is the mostest.

Try linda perry and grace slick, Knock Me Out.

"Only One" by Melissa would be great. Such a groovy song.

Thank you.
Lex’s insights here are very astute and helpful. There is wisdom in her observations/reaction to the song.
Always loved her voice and this song.
BTW, these two seem to perfectly compliment each other. She provides the spice and flavor, and he is the flour that makes a great recipe and holds the cake together.
Linda Perry, the singer, Is a flat awesome artist, singer, song writer and a beautiful soul!
She's an incredible singer!!
LEX is just in tune with it all! I’m humbled by her.
♥ Anarchy as in autonomy. Another great read and reaction. She's a breath of fresh air. Thanks! ☺♥
I Remember this song from childhood. Good chill song with deep meaning. Probably more prevalent this decade.
This came out when I was 25. It was our Generation X theme.
Of all the great music I've listened to over the years,,,, this song is at the very top of my playlist!
Bigger better faster more is a great album! One of the most underrated albums of the 90’s
Fun Facts:
