- Thanks for checking out our reaction to 4 Non Blondes. What's Up is an interesting song. What's your read on this? We don't really have a good read on this band, gotta listen to some more of their stuff.

This video is the most early 90s thing I've ever seen.
Yup
It's one of the first hits for the coattail riding/poser wave that followed the Seattle bands, for sure.
@@chrisharris7931 it definitely has that Cali post-grunge feel, like Counting Crows, Bush, and Candlebox
Absolutely. And your comment is the mostest.
@@ZacCostilla to me I’m getting remnants of the end of the hair metal age with a tad grunge and some Alanis Morisette
She is extraordinarily wealthy from all the hit songs she has produced and written for Pink, Christine Aguillera,
etc. She is married to the girl from the Rosanne show. This song was number one in almost all the countries
of Europe and South America.
They actually divorced not too long ago....🙁
Sara Gilbert (but yeah, divorced).
She's married to Darlene?? Sweet, Leonard couldn't pull it off
@@krisfrederick5001 she was. they're divorced.
@@krisfrederick5001 I think you mean David? Leonard is Big Bang Theory!
Linda Perry has a fascinating career story. She really struggled to have mainstream hits with her own bands and solo songs, and then came to terms with the path of helping other artists shine.
She’s a badass. One of the songwriting producers I’d most love to get the chance to hang with.
She has a new song out
Try linda perry and grace slick, Knock Me Out.
She found her lane no doubt. She couldn’t form a group of ladies that suited her artistic vision. But she found a way to fit her songs to the right artists. She’s the billy bean of songwriting
When this song comes on the radio in the car, it's impossible to not scream out the vocals with Linda Perry.
Its so cool to see Lex learning/seeing the subtble nuances in music. Like just appreciating & pointing out someones vocal range is such a simple thing but it's basically what we all think about when we hear a song. Its what connects us in our love of all kinds of music
Linda Perry shows what is what in the music industry. A brilliant songwriter, an extremely gifted singer, but she hit it with only one song at the mike, but made a ton of money writing, producing and producing for others.
Linda Perry is right up there when it comes to the greatest singing voices.
Now she mostly writes for other artists. A lot of great selling songs as well. She's very talented!
Literally can't hear this song without it getting replaced by the He-Man and Skeletor version
Haven’t seen that ! 😂
and now i cant stop from remembering the scene in Sense8
I have to pause this to go look for that !
MYAH!
I remember watching that in middle school like 10 years ago and thinking that was the original version lmao
She's been a prolific song writer and producer, even then
@My Dixie Wrecked Homosexual propganda? Is that like the colour blue propaganda?
@My Dixie Wrecked propaganda. 😅😂🤣
@My Dixie Wrecked You're a troll. I can tell by your incessant need for attention. btw nice username. 🙄
This song, Hunger Strike, and Ghost of Tom Joad were my voices in my twenties.
Now in my 40’s, I listen to them every 2-3 months to keep me from becoming “comfortably numb”.
Clever wording!! ;) And I agree with all that you wrote!!
100% I am right there with you ✌💪
I see what you did there!
100% on the head of the nail!
This song was a smash hit on the radio ... and stuff like this brings me back to my high school years. We were slackers, and finding solace and self expression. It's cool that you picked this, cause it really brings back some humble beginnings.
Listen to Blind Melon "No Rain" or Smashing Pumpkins "Today" for similar vibes.
YES TO NO RAIN
Dang. This video really crystalized what I like about your channel. Brad is the lawful good type looking for structure and meaning. Lex is the chaotic good type looking for freedom and feeling. Both of you together creates a really fun vibe as you both know and appreciate the other. Bless you both, and keep rocking!
The struggles were real back in the day for women rock bands! Linda has wrote a lot of great songs for other artists and produced them as well! She deserves to be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame...
I love the emotion in her voice. I would like to hear you guys do Tori Amos and Melissa Etheridge in the future. Two other passionate singers.
Cornflake girl
"Only One" by Melissa would be great. Such a groovy song.
That would be very cool.
Cornflake girl a must!!
Niiiice, yes! Tori Amos is amazing. Voting for 'Winter' and 'Crucify'.
This is an iconic 90's song
Just brings back memories. Being in my mid 20s and going to parties and raves with friends. Early 90s was a great time for music. 4 Non Blondes also covered Misty Mountain Hop. And I wish more women wore hats. Thanks for doing this Brad and Lex.
Such a good era of music!!
Two of my most respected people on this planet. Stay grounded and be a ray of sunshine for us that love you. God Bless.
I'd love to hear your take on Edie Brickel and The New Bohemians "What I Am"
They would love it
@My Dixie Wrecked Does Paul Simon know?
What I Am is a great jam.
The lead singer, Linda Perry, is a music icon. When she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Lady Gaga sang this song in her honor. I was a little gay, hispanic kid when this came out and it was such great, feel-good song that I could identify with. I still belt this out with my friends when it comes on at the bar or at karaoke or on the radio. 🥰
Their reaction shows why their channel is the best & i keep coming back.
Linda Perry is amazing writer! Wrote songs for many artists and also was very influential in Pink’s career! Incredible how people get little credit when they aren’t the front line! Love this song! Thanks lex , for getting it!
It's Pink. Her music is garbage.
@@chrisharris7931 I would respectfully disagree !
I second that emotion. There's nothing more gratifying than seeing someone figure out the beauty of somebody else's art :) Lex put not only a smile on my face, but a caress to my soul :) #namaste!
"get little credit when they aren’t the front line" They might not want to be on the front line and often, songwriters get paid per song plus they get royalties for life where singers get paid per performance. Over a lifetime the songwriter can earn more and still go out in public. Assuming money is a motivating factor.
I was 25 and a nighclub DJ when this came out.... loved it. It's about the struggles we all go through very day.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Lex's break down during the second break!!!! This was before Linda Perry was a huge producer, and like Lex said about herself growing up, feeling different. This was an all lesbian band in the early 90's when LGBTQ awareness was not near what it was just a decade later at the start of the new millennium, so I think that was part of it, but Lex, you're take on on developed countries having less to worry about, and Brad's clarifying your thought with a couple great analogies, was extremely thought provoking and something I figured more likely to hear on a Ted Talk or some snooty philosophy lecture. Not that you guys are acting snooty, or pretentious, AT ALL, just saying it's refreshing to hear intelligent commentary from regular folks, while enjoying a song and reaction, without wading through a long educational video or some dry book.. Cheers!!
I think they knew but were skirting around it with subtle nods about the singer's perspective, especially Brad, he knew right away via his glances and gestures.
there's gotta be a way for you guys to put a lyric video on the left for brad, and the performance video on the right for lex.
This may be hard to fathom, but not so very long ago being an out lesbian was a rarity. Add to that the usual reckoning of getting to age 25, which feels like it should be "adulthood" and not having all the answers, and this song makes more sense. I was 25 when this song came out, and it resonated with me. The mixture of being physically in one's prime, independent, full of potential and yet still very much trying to figure out the world and myself was well encapsulated in this song.
about the same. was the national anthem of the early 90s
The thing that keeps me coming back to your videos, is that I genuinely care about your feelings for all these songs I have loved so much. The only person luckier than Lex for having Brad, is Brad for having Lex! Cheers!
Hello from France, love your channel.
Happy to see your "part" of the new generation who likes oldies but Goldies :)
Peace and Love :)
itchy pause button finger whenever a song just starts to take off
@John Davis Totally agree. Really breaks the flow of every song in an unpleasant way. Your suggestion is a good one.
It’s interesting how art affects you. I’m a 64 year old white male widower. I love this song. It makes me cry every time.
I tell you, its the 90s. Give it up to all the fantastic female artists and bands. There has never been a decade where so many female artists had shined brighter. Shania twain, Whitney Houston, alanis morissette, 4 non blondes, Gwen Stefani (no doubt), Celine Deon, Lyanne Ryhmes, missy Elliott, cher (solo), sara McLachlan, TLC and I'm sure im missing many others, this decade was the greatest decade of music for women. That aside, we also had the birth of grunge; nirvana, soundgarden, Chris Connell (sound garden) and his covers as well as acoustic versions, and my alltime favorite pearl jam. Eddie Vedder still going strong today. The 90s ruled music and the women were rocking harder than ever before. 🤘
oh god,those days...
So for those who don’t get it: she wrote this song about what she was going through at the time. Obviously, her circumstances have since changed. SMH
This song represents the angst and desperation she was feeling. Even people who don’t experience the same things she dealt with can identify with her frustration of trying to navigate through a world where the odds seem stacked against you.
Her success was not the result of having her talent supported by record execs or the powers in charge, but by the grassroots fan support for this incredible song-which sums up a feeling that’s not always easy to express. Not everyone’s in tune with their emotions, but certainly those who are can understand exactly what this song is trying to convey.
This song went to #1 in a number of countries. The US was the only where they didn’t even make the top 10 on the main charts according to billboard tracking.
This song was an anthem in the 90's. It was played every half hour on almost every radio station along with I Would Do Anything For Love by Meatloaf.
Facts.
Thank you for reviewing this one... One of my favorite go to songs.
Singer has written numerous hit songs for other artists. This is one of my favorite covers that Leo from Frog Leap Studios does. Y’all need to check him out, metal covers of all genres of songs and he plays all the instruments.
Leo rocks! Africa is probably may favorite Leo cover
Leo has some amazing covers
Leo's version of "Hello" from Adele is one of the greatest covers ever.
Leo's version of Sultans of Swing my favorite.

MARY!
SPENDER!
Lex is such a rock and roll nerd… and that’s one of the many reasons we all love her. I would give a paycheck to see a Korn concert with these two.
Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde has one of the best and most underrated female rock voices ever! Joey is a song you should react to. The acoustic version is even better
Love Concrete Blonde! They would def be a good group to react to.
Yes! And Lex loves unusual (and strong female) voices.
Tomorrow, Wendy is an awesome song as well.
Saw Concrete blonde in concert in Australia, their drummer was next level
"Still in Hollywood" is my favorite by them but "Joey" would elicit a better reaction.
Again I think Lex appreciation for all genres of music is infectious and totally enjoyable.
you guys are ossm , found ya and binge watched and enjoyed keep em comin thank you
She' so talented, wrote a lot with Pink some years ago. For a real genius, try Kate Bush - Running up that Hill
YES TO KATE BUSH - a one of a kind musical and artistic genius, and a true pioneer for women in the music industry for 4 decades
I seem to remember Dave Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) performing that with her and it being a pretty good version. Think a band Placebo covered it in the '90s too, and that was also a good version.
rrlg dont know if you've seen it but Kate Bush does a cover of Rocket Man on the Wogan show, no one else could do it the way she did
Miss you guys so much! Watched this beyond what I did before, and you're both SO greatly analitycal of what it is about, what it means, etc. Damn, again, miss you two
I've only watched a few of your reactions so far, but gotta say I really like your take on things in general and the music/lyrics in particular. New sub, will be watching more.
You have an incredible take on this amazing song. It’s simple but deep with outstanding vocals.
This is one of the best reactions I've ever seen. Y'all really listened to the lyrics and then tried to connect some dots to your own lived experiences. It was really introspective without being hokey. Excellent!
Guys! I’m so happy you did this one. I really enjoyed hearing your commentary on it, and how Lex was connecting to it. I actually never thought too much about the lyrics, but I love the sound (and that might be my 90s bias lol). Idk if you saw my request for this song, but thank you!
When I hear this ladys voice I get goose bumps. Here voice just amazes me. I just saw a tribute band do this song and the girl hit it so well I had tears in my eyes. This is just a wonderful song and an amazing lady.
5:34 My dad was in the Army and I spent 4th-6th grade in Germany and 8th-10th grade in Belgium. There was a huge culture shock moving back to the States for me. I totally understand what you mean!
My new favorite song. I don't even care if its 20 years old. Thx 4 sharing.
Lex, I once again, really dig your breakdown. You are are deep and thoughtful. ❤✌
I love you guys. So relatable and emotionally intelligent. Props.
I almost didn’t click on this. I just didn’t know if I could listen to this AGAIN 😩 Just teasing, this has always been one of my favorite songs and I recently played it for my 2 year old grandson. So now I’ve had to listen to it at least 10 times a day lol He even woke up singing it (heyeeeyaa) two days ago so I had to play it immediately. He absolutely loves to watch the video also. I used to wear Uggs and shorts too. I was a bit bohemian and a bit of everything else. Whatever I was feeling that day.
Whoa ! Incredible song ! Incredible voice ! Perry has the 1969 Woodstock look with refined Joplinesque clearer voice range. Outstanding !
This is a classic song! Glad too see you checking it out!
Lex, you got it. Music is sound first, sound that moves you...and I love your reactions and how you most times, nail the meaning, even deep songs. Lex ur a ⭐️
Wow, I'm new to your reactions, but that was some seriously insightful analysis. Respect!
A hugely underrated band. I would not say they are among my favorites, but they are extremely good and deserve recognition.
Always loved 4 non-blondes and so glad you did this one!
DAMN! Brad and Lex, y’all hit it straight n the nose. Your right about life and meaning
This is one of my go to karokee songs, so relevant, especially now and days! When I finally got up the nerve to sing i sang this and blew the roof off cuz i can do the range but i totally did not expect the crowd reaction.
I like what you had to say about this song! It always makes me think that you can't ever stop questioning what's going on around you...which is something that's hard to be able to do until your basic needs are taken care of, like you said.
I think you guys are spot on with your interpretation of the meaning of the song- very nice- always good to find comradery in a place you didn't expect to- 👍
This came out when I was 25. It was our Generation X theme.
Very good song. Not really my genre, but on certain days, and at certain times, I feel her so much that it brings a tear to my eye. Great lyrics.
Welcome to the 90's!!!!! Glad you're with us.
You know I love you guys, if you read comments, I'm all over your channel, subbed after the first watch, never disappointed. You all jam the kind of music I love, I am so happy you guys are on here doing this. Maybe the most perfect music reaction channel. JUST maybe...
Inspirational for us all at the time. Good emotions
This world is such an illusion, the garbage we pretend is important - I love her, she's beautiful and her soul is in her voice.
This was my jam back in the day. Great songs never seem dated. This could have been released yesterday and it would be a hit.
I was in Arizona when this song came on the radio for the first time. I called the station to find out who it was. I have been a big fan of Ronnie James Dio and def heard a similarity...fell in love with her instantly. Saw her in small clubs many times in San Francisco. What a performer. One evening she played at Sweet Water in Mill Valley and during her cover of Whole Lotta Love, she walked out on the table tops still singing and stopped on my table to belt out a few notes. I Gently put my fingers on the heel of her platform shoe and was jolted be her energy. Fun night.
Such a unique and brilliant tune. Back in the day, I bought the cassette on the strength of this song and was not disappointed. 👍
Of all the great music I've listened to over the years,,,, this song is at the very top of my playlist!
lexi the best thing about music and metal or rock in general is everyone is welcome we dont care what you wear or what you look like...its a vibe...
Just listened to this song on the way home from work today randomly and now I see this! Amazing song!
what an incredible voice!!
I Remember this song from childhood. Good chill song with deep meaning. Probably more prevalent this decade.
This was the karaoke song for all the women with awesome voices (and many who couldn't sing for shite as well) in the 90's. Always reminds me of those Saturday nights at the bar when karaoke was just coming up. Good song!
I always had Much Music on tv back in the early/mid 90's. ALWAYS. one of those songs that i never realized i loved until 20+ years later:P
This was the ultimate sing-along song in bars and clubs all over the world in the early 90s. Linda Perry, like, Butch Walker, are both great artists, who made their nut writing everyone else's songs.
deep and apt analysis, you two
You can literally watch people grow as they hear this song the first time. The songwriter has a clear understanding of the role of rock music has had on social change. From her view of the early 80s, she is saying that there is a lot still to be done.✌️🎸
She's an incredible singer!!
90's Jam this would come on when I was in High School before heading to the bus stop. All the nostalgia. Her voice is amazing and unique 😁
One of the best and most powerful voices ever!
Love the genre fluid shirt. You guys rock!
I would love to see your reaction to this whole album. It is poetry gold.
it's an A+ song for her voice and structure.......so different than the rest....and Lex rocks!!!
You guys wanna hear sick range live? Queensryche: Take hold of the flame in Tokyo
Yes yes yes!
Absolutely!!!! And silent lucidity and so many off of The warning, rage for order, operation mindcrime, empire...
if we are going to go that direction I'd say Floor Jansen of Nightwish probably has the greatest range and mobility of any singer out there. saying nothing about the rollercoaster ride that is how Floor became the lead singer.
@@tazman66gt18 lol ridiculous cartoon rock
@@acebrockton1828 LOL, obvious you've actually never listened to them. ignorance doesn't make you right.
I’m a new subscriber, but I love the way Lex connects with music. She really gets it.
She has an AMAZING VOICE great range and still still very CLEAN very CLEAR
Absolute Essential Classic! Rock on!
Always loved her voice and this song.
BTW, these two seem to perfectly compliment each other. She provides the spice and flavor, and he is the flour that makes a great recipe and holds the cake together.
Lex’s insights here are very astute and helpful. There is wisdom in her observations/reaction to the song.
Lex, I’ve watched this a couple of times now, and I want to encourage you to keep the trail you’re on. You have a finger on something we all are trying to figure out, but you’ve got a platform. Stay the trail, lady. You and B-Rad are helping. Thank you.
90s was the best decade to be a teenager
Agreed. Especially considering we had the 80s for toys as kids...
Risking sounding like a nostalgic old man, I have to agree with you. Early 90s was the best because we could enjoy the good old stuff from the 60s, and 70s, and at the same time we were living the peak of popular music.
Good tune, thanks guys ✌️
Nice job guys!
Keep it up!
Reaction videos are my favorite
It's kind of my thing
This reaction,, to this song
Absolute gold
You get it
LEX is just in tune with it all! I’m humbled by her.
Amazing these powerful women can sing and play ! I always loved this one the message Is amazing too !
90's music was unequalled in terms of all decade's
