Fun fact: lead singer Linda Perry went on to write iconic hits for the likes of P!nk and Christina Aguilera in the 2000s. Her résumé is crazy!
Little did Linda know when she wrote this song that her destination at the top of the great big hill of hope would be writing "Get The Party Started"
She also produced a lot of music, even outside of her songwriting. She's produced songs for James Blunt, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Joan Jett, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion, Adam Lambert, Miley Cyrus, Adele, Dolly Parton have all worked with Linda Perry across several decades.
She's a musical juggernaut, but is mostly only known for this one-hit wonder.

Filmed in the bands' hometown of San Francisco, CA. The video's low budget forced the group to shoot in a friend's living room. The band and crew were in constant fear of being thrown out of their exterior locations, as they couldn't afford filming permits. Half the budget was spent flying the crew up from Los Angeles.
4 Non Blondes formed in 1989, they signed a record contract after only one year.
The band took their name from a band member's observation: "Look, we're 4 non blondes".
Linda Perry was the lead singer and this was her first band. Combined number of bands the other 3 non blondes had played in at the time: 41
Linda brought 15 different hats to the video shoot.
Linda says she called the song "What''s Up" Because it is her favorite expression, and "What's Going On" was already taken.
This album sold 8.000 copies in it's first year, 5 million it's second. The director wanted the band to come up with things to do that showed their personalities, but only Linda had any ideas. She wanted to be naked in a bathtub covered with gumballs. But the record company said: "what's up with that?"

lol given the filming challenges it was absolutely the bestest darn music video i have seen in a long time. so much expressions! the emotion and fun they were having doing it.... as rebels! tryin it on basically. and just how well it came out afterwards 1000% one of my favorites
She played this recently on Howard Stern, and she still sounds the same. A unique voice, that's for sure.

@@jamessollazzo4860 San Francisco had problems back in 1992.....homeless....crime...parking problems......car break ins.....car theft. I lived there a few years and then the cons outgrew the pro's. It's always like that living in big cities. Heard some great music and danced my ass off in SF before I moved to Nor Cal in 1994.
It makes me so happy to see someone young experiencing these songs I grew up with for the first time. You need some Collective Soul, Blind Melon, Spin Doctors, and maybe Bowling for Soup

Catchy chorus that had me hooked.. when I bought the single ... the B side off this tape was TRAIN and a great song as well.

This was one of the best free concerts I ever saw in the mid 90s in Cincinnati. I was into metal, and you have to appreciate talent when you experience it. I was kinda awestruck that the live experience from kinda far away towards the back of the crowd, I was absolutely captivated. My friends wanted to tease, but I had an experience that was truly wholesome and amazing.
I always thought the lead singer Linda Perry was like a female version of Axle Rose from guns and roses voice wise!

Others have mentioned that lead vocalist Linda Perry has written hit songs for a number of other artists. This was 4 Non Blondes' only studio album ("Bigger, Better Faster, More"). There were other singles including "Spaceman." Interstingly,. There was another radio hit from this album, titled "Morphine and Chocolate," which apparently was not released as a single according to Wikipedia. Like you, I am mesmerized by Linda Perry's vocal prowess. She can go from Sweet and lovely to piercing and coarse and back all in the same phrase. While nobody has a voice like Linda Perry's, I'd love to suggest a tune I think you'll really like. A lot of sources call Sinead O'Connor a one-hit wonder for her cover of Pirince's "Nothing Compares 2U" (which, if you aren't familiar with the song is worth a reaction). However, she was already well-known in the Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) world from her previous album, "The Lion and the Cobra" which had a couple of songs that got a lot of airplay on AOR stations. The first, and biggest hit was a song called "Mandinka" which I think you will enjoy.

Their whole album Bigger, Better, Faster, More is gr8 Old Mr Hieffer, Drifting, Spaceman, Train, Superfly etc.
I wish she continued to perform instead of giving away her creative writing to others. She had her own reasons for sure but still I feel like she robbed herself of an bigger career and us of her talented crazy voice which is a zillion times better than any other singer she wrote hits for. Can you imagine if she went on on her own writing and performing herself, with Four No Blonde and solo!?? She's simply amazing and she can do any song, from soave smooth ones to gritty dramatic ones effortlessly!
This song is probably the one I listened more than any other during the Grunge era, aside Stone Temple Pilot, Pearl Jam and most importantly, of course, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains/Mad Season which are the bands I kept listening to even when the Grunge era was over.
PS: I'm curious to see a reaction of yours to Spin Doctors, Aileen. I hope many others agree with me so that band might have a chance... those guys were a breath of fresh air when the Grunge was fading away...
I heard this song for the first time on my 25th birthday. I've loved it ever since. "25 years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill" If only I had understood how young I actually was.

They do a killer cover of the Led Zeppelin song Misty Mountain Hop. The whole LZ tribute album is great. They are on it. Hootie and the Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, Stone Temple Pilots, Duran Duran, Helmet, Cracker, Blind Melon, Tori Amos singing with Robert Plant.
Awesome reaction and what a great tune. There is a 3 piece all girl band called The Warning, 3 sisters from Mexico, and are bringing back rock & roll. Check out one of their new songs "Hell You Call A Dream" live from the Pepsi Center. They have so many great songs, it's like they never write a bad one. Their new LP "Keep Me Fed" drops June 28th.

I remember as a kid doing an internship in the Bay Area, I ran into Linda and I didn't know who she was. When my friends and got back at our apartment they played this song telling me that's who I was talking to. While I was there I took up playing guitar, it seems like another lifetime ago.

Linda Perry doesn't play much music anymore but instead she still writes music for some top-name artists and on top of that she is a HUGE advocate for women in the music industry. IIRC she also funds a scholarship for women who want music degrees. Sadly, 4NB broke up shortly after the first album's release. It spent 59 weeks in the Billboard's Top 200 and sold 1.9M copies.

Pink does versions of this song that are fantastic, but my favorite is her duet with Linda Perry.
Linda Perry’s In Flight solo album is perfection and includes a duet with Grace Slick. The level of talent on that one song is so great that it bends the fabric of space time in its vicinity.
I was one of a handful of people who bought her solo album In Flight. Her voice and angst always spoke to me and I would recommend it to anyone who was moved by her. Perhaps not incidentally, she went on to produce Pink who knocked on her door one day and said "I love you and I want to make music with you".
