Oh my lord.... Linda Perry is a legend. I'm almost certain they were a one hit wonder. I've heard other songs of theirs but NOTHING got as big as this song. If anyone is a pink fan, they will be able to hear Linda Perry on Pink's misunderstood album who Linda helped write, produce and lend vocals to on a couple of songs. She is definitely a power house.
Lead singer "Linda" is a f. living legend in music history! She didn't only wrote this hit, but also songs for Pink, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani and others ... She has her own record label with artists like Faith Hill, Sugarbabes and so on. Just to name a few beside Britney Spears, Kelly Osborne with support of Lisa Marie Presley (< dauther of the KING) ... The song "Pray for Forgiveness" from Alicia Keys was written by her, ... and on and on and on! Just to name a few more: Courtney Love, James Blunt, Skin, Rossdale, etc.
Linda Perry (lead singer) is the song writer & she's written songs for some of the biggest names in music. She's also a good friend of Dolly Parton & they just released a cover together of this song, with Dolly singing & Linda playing guitar. It's on Dolly's UA-cam channel. They changed the lyrics a tiny bit & it's nice with the Dolly touch. Their video for the song has some throw backs to this video too. It's a fun watch. And Linda is somewhat known for her hats. She's got a different but equally large & unique hat on in the Dolly video.
@@kathybwell It's really, really good! Highly recommend hopping over to Dolly's UA-cam channel & checking it out (it's fairly recent). You can tell the 2 of them are good friends & genuinely like each other in real life. Of course Dolly's voice just adds a whole new layer/meaning & you can tell Linda is pleased with it all.
This might be the most 90s music video that ever 90ed. They were a one hit wonder, but what a damn hit! Still one of my favorite songs from my teenage years.
I was on the last buddy trip I took before my first child was born. We went to Panama City Beach and we went on a bender--beer, weed, and shrooms. We were standing on the beach drinking beer, high as fuck, and this song started playing through these loud speakers at the bar behind us. I'm 53 and still telling this story, because this song was fucking badass.
Linda Perry’s steampunk vibe…along with those loud boxers are magnificent! Such a shame that she works as a producer rather than a performer now. She’s definitely a one of a kind vocalist.
Somehow this song always manages to put me in a good mood. And this was the early ‘90s, when girls in groups had the boots and the dreads and the piercings, and they rocked.
Linda Perry is super talented. Check out 'Beautiful' or 'Hurt' both written by Linda Perry and performed by 'Christina Aguilera'. I recall a great story from Linda Perry about how Christina recorded 'Beautiful' in one take, Linda loved it, kept it but Christina constantly hounded her to do another take which never happened. When you know it's right! Cheers.
The song is more or less about struggling to survive in a world that is inherently designed to keep you down. Various lyrics allude to this: _"Twenty five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination."_ _"I try, oh my God do I try in this institution"_ (referring to the broken system) _"I pray, oh my God do I pray, I pray every single day for a revolution."_ (praying for the system to change)
I'm listening to music over 60 years Linda Perry is one of the greatest singers ever the song is dynamite!! She reminds me somewhat of Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane late 60s. Also she would do justice and more for Janis Joplins songs. Best of success on yr channel
After this song hit big in 1993 the band broke up the next year. Linda Perry was and still is a songwriter for other big name artist like Pink & Christina Aguliera among others so she still had a career after the band was done.
What’s Up?” is a song about the frustration and hopelessness of living in a messed-up world. The song is often seen as a feminist anthem concerning women navigating in a male-dominated world, but “What’s Up?” was also inspired by the political landscape of the 1990s
You could not get away from this song when this hit. A few years later I got the CD for $.10 in a discount bin. I listened to the rest of that album and my jaw hit the floor! Banger after banger. What a damn shame the rest of the album didn't have the success of this song.
The lead singer here, Linda Perry, is ... _very very very_ ...well known in the industry. She's produced hits for everyone from Alicia Keys and Pink to Celine Dion and Pitbull. She was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2015. She's written so many hits. Linda Perry is a legend. But no, 4 Non Blondes had no other hit singles. The rest of the album is pretty good though.
Bro, i don't know what you're music background is, r if you're like me , a music lover who loves to analyze, but you're always so on point with everything you say and read into in a song. This is an Amazing piece of work that will never get old. In my town skateboarding is back, revelant to the video.
On of the great old songs, you’ll find yourself singing the hey yeah yeah part for a longtime. The original name was going to be What’s Going On, but Marvin Gaye already had that one🎶🎶🎶
I heared this song when I didn't understood english but the vibe caught me and all my non english speaker fellows. That's what music is about, create a universal language.
I am sure others will disagree but Mr President is a deep ass good song by 4 non blondes. HE IS GOING TO BURN IT DOWN! Such a old classic that is true today.
Linda Perry has written songs for pink - get the party started, Christina Aguilera - Beautiful, Gwen Stefani - what you waiting for, Dixie Chicks - voice inside my head, Alicia keys - superwoman and many more crazy talented song written
Linda Perry, I believe that's her name, ❤her vocals, drummer is fantastic, and the guitars as well. Don't know the other girls names. Linda was married to The girl who played Rosanne Barr's daughter on the Connors show. Also think this song was before she could legally marry same sex.
I was smack in the middle of high school when this song came out, and I swear it should have been our class song, no lie. It's so representative of that era and this generation. To this day, if anyone busts this out at karaoke, it goes just as hard as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or "Don't Stop Believin'." The whole dang bar will sing at the top of their lungs, too. I really like your ponderings about whether this revolution is personal or larger. And you know what? I think it's probably both.
Linda is called a Song Whisperer. She has an incredible talent and can spot great emotional singers. She did a VH1 special you should check out. Also, check out Daniel Powter “Am I Still The One”. He’s a Linda Perry protege.
This was probably their best know song by far, but they do have another one worth a listen, it's called Train. Same album, a little faster song, got some killer harmonica in it lol! Check it out if you can.
I can't believe this was the only hit song on their album I think because this song had a profound message compared to the rest of their stuff which probably weren't as hard hitting that this song. Linda Perry was a storyteller and songwriter I kind of wished she sung more because her voice was unique particularly when she's on her trademark acoustic guitar
Hate that she didnt go any further than they did with this group, but she has done so brilliantly thru her career and written so, so many great legondary songs. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
The second part of the first verse suggests to me that she’s singing about a woman trying to compete in a man’s world (“this world was made up of this brotherhood of man, for whatever that means”). Or perhaps that she just doesn’t fit in. The praying for a revolution is that we put away our old preconceptions and open our minds to new people and new ideas.
It's in the first line. "This brotherhood of man. Whatever thar means". Couldn't agree more. Humans just lack humanity. It's a dog eat dog. You're different from me attitude that doesn't have to exist but it does. Unfortunately I don't recall any other sings of their's but I listened to it when it hit.
Linda is a great song writer & amazing vocalist. Some people need to adjust to her style but once you do it’s awesome 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼great reaction, love the way you break it down 🙌🏻She is a strong feminist & was married to Sara Gilbert.
She’s amazing, and we women (young back then😂) needed to fight against the patriarchy, and that’s still valid! She’s part of the lgbtq community, but this is an anthem for all women!💖my daughter can kick ass at karaoke with this song 😂
they look like 90's grunge lesbians. 6:58 the lyrics, "revolution" etc., this is from Genius: "The world is dominated by the patriarchy (brotherhood of man). It can also apply to the music industry, as Linda Perry is an openly gay woman in a male-dominated industry and genre. This connects directly with verse 2’s prayer “every single day for revolution.”"

Linda is lesbian and at the time caught in a world of man and her voice goes from girly to ferocious, symbolizing the struggle for her identity and place. Brilliant!
Dude, this is from MY era. Teenager in the 90's. At the time, we understood it for the movements in our time. Listening to it now as a middle age Gen X, I'm SHOCKED at how relevent it is to todays trials. This should be the Millennial's and Gen X's anthem. What I'd like younger adults to know is that most of us get you. 75% of our generation is divorce, many of us leaving our homes, selling everything we dont need, using tax returns to buy cash cars that we van carry liability insurance on because we can't afford a car payment and full coverage. Cutting costs where we can to save up enough for a down payment on a rental in a decent neighborhood so you can move yourself and your teenage kid out of your retired parents' house where you had to move in "temporarily" because youre starting completely over. And you still can't quite get ahead. Dont listen to the few soapboxers that think youre just lazy. Most of us get you. We remember what it was like moving out on our own the first time. It WAS different. You could afford rent on two minimum wage incomes. Maybe not the best place, but good enough to move out on your own or with a roommate. My young husband and i bought our first starter home in a decent neighborhood for $23,000 when he was 22 and i was 20. Neither of us came from privilege. I was 17 when i got pregnant with our first child. Pregnant with #2 when we bought the house. We had our son and i turned 21 two weeks later in that house. Here's the kicker...he worked in a lumber yard and i worked as a nail tech on commission, happy if i cleared minimum wage, despite constantly being booked, as I was very good. Still we were able to make it. That is a pipe dream now. I remarried two years ago. My husband and I left the homes we owned and started over together. We both have pretty decent jobs, we, toegether, rent a nice home with a deck and a fenced yard for our dog. My husband took over the lawn maintenance for the three houses here on our cul de sac, so our rent is $200 cheaper than our neighbors. If, god forbid, we were to split up 9r one of us pass away, neither one of is could afford to stay in this house. It would be back to a two bedroom apartment in a complex for both of us. Dont get me wrong, we're happy and doing our best with rising costs of MOTHERFUCKING EVERYTHING, like everyone else, but we will never own a home again. Ever. It IS different now. Its much harder. And, whether its true or not, you often can't an help but feel like every aspect of your life is rigged against you. Trust me. We get you. I have so much empathy for the young adults that are trying like hell to get out and màke it work but are making ZERO headway. If youre truly doing youre best, it not your fault. NO ONE should have to work 70 hours a week just to survive. Not even live comfotrably in many cases. JUST to survive. We get you. So many of us try to want to go back to school so we can afford to stay off welfare as a single parent, but a degree costs as much a house. Starting out with student debt... I have around $16,000 in student loans from goingto college when i wasn't ready because that's what youre supposed to do immediately after high school, right? So with my payment schedule ($200/mo), i will pay for 25 YEARS, and WHAT'S LEFT will be forgiven. I will be 60 YEARS OLD, will have paid $60,000 on a $16,000 loan, and it STILL technically will not have been paid off. Darlings, WE GET YOU. We understand the mental health struggled of trying to come up in a seemingly hopeless world with nothing to look forward to and work for, when there's no reason to try. The loss of pride in being self-sufficient, and even comfortable, on a blue collar income. You can't do it without selling your soul to your job at working class pay. With NO HOPE of achieving the American Dream, let alone retiring. We can look forward to semi retirement at best. No wonder your (and our) mental health and emotional stability are suffering in so many different ways. Its hard to not break when hope has become a luxury. We get you. This is just MY story. It's not special or unique. A LOT of our generation are going through the exact same thing.
This sing is epic. I think they're all.lesbians. lol. The lead singer is married to the daughter from the Rosanne show I think non blondes means they're not dumb blondes lol. People.laugh when I sing this song in key. It's great

I read that she was in a hospital suffering from serious depression, and wrote this song there. Hence the 'institution' she refers to
