“You can get just so much from a good thing. You can linger too long in your dreams. Say goodbye to the oldies but goodies-’cause the good ol’ days weren’t always good…and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems.”

    • @seanscanlon9067

When Billy recorded the whole An Innocent Man album, it was a homage to the acts and styles of music that he grew up listening to in the 50s and 60s and on the song from that album This Night, the basis of the song's chorus uses the second movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata, which was a nod to his childhood days of taking classical piano.
Keeping the Faith was the last track on An Innocent Man and was Billy's way of saying by all means look back on the past fondly, but the future will have its good times too, which is basically the message in the lyric you highlighted in your post.

This was the last track on Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album. It's tracks are all reminiscent of 50's and early 60's rock n roll and r & b. In this song Joel explains his reasons for this "revival" and assures us that he's still a 1980's pop/rocker. The next song he put out was Modern Woman (from the movie Ruthless People) and it was a 80's synth/pop hit.

I have loved this song and album for nearly 40 years, and I never realized this! Thanks for that cool bit of trivia! My mom bought the Innocent Man album because it sounded so retro, and I played it often because I was already a Billy Joel fan since early childhood. I thought it was kinda cool that my mom liked some of "my" music, because honestly, she really despised most of it. Especially as a teen when my interests turned to hair bands and metal. She was convinced it was of the devil. 😂

"You know the good old days weren't always good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems."
This to me is the most important message of the song, something we can't forget.
Those of us that remember times past, and remember them as something good...spread those memories...keep the faith! Share what was good and how it was good, if you can make someone feel nostalgic for a time they weren't even alive in...you've made some great memories and done a great job sharing them! But don't ever be afraid to let the young generation living now make their own memories! The past is not a template to make things great, it's a mine we sometimes can pull a few unique diamonds out of, but let the kids today lay their own groondwork to find their own kind of unique diamonds tomorrow.

I loved the entire Innocent Man album. Billy was in a super contented period of his life at that phase (new love with Christy, his wife) and it came out in this album, which was an ode to the music of his youth. My favourite track is “This Night” which Billy co-wrote with his classical music hero: Beethoven. It’s a shee-bop song with amazing harmonies and then it swells into that glorious chorus, written by Beethoven with Billy’s lyrics. Billy Joel will always be a Timeless Classic, generational music that my parents, me, kids, and grand kids love. Speaking of a timeless classic, Savatage (Gutter Ballet) still remains one from 1989. Symphonic Heavy Metal at its finest. The precursor of TSO (Trans Siberian Orchestra).

I just saw Billy Joel in concert! It was my fifth time and he NEVER disappoints! Took my 19 year old daughter and 15 year old son. They loved it! Oh yeah... Stevie Nicks opened the show! Two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, one night. Doesn't get any better than that!❤

This lyric is so much deeper than it seems at first, for such a poppy song! (And yeah, I know I already commented pretty much the same thing last year...just expanding on it)
You can get just so much from a good thing
You can linger too long in your dreams
Say goodbye to the oldies but goodies
'Cause the good ole days weren't always good
And tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems

You guys really need to check out the movie "Oliver and Company"! Billy Joel is the voice of Dodger and is also on the soundtrack! Along with Bette Midler and Huey Lewis. SO cool! "Why Should I Worry?" is a jam! 😎 I guarantee you guys love that one! Cheech Marin is another cool name who lends their voice. It's a really fun movie you and the kids will love! Can't wait to see you guys react to it!! Haven't seen it in years but now I have to put it on this weekend with the little one ❤
    Also!
Keep your eyes open for a Disney Easter egg! 😊

So happy you enjoy Billy Joel. He was first rock artist to be invited to USSR, in 87, before it became Russia. The performances are amazing. Please try You May be Right or Big Man on Mulberry Street. He crowd surfs during the song The Longest Time. Also live from Tokyo in 2006 Honesty. I know you did Piano Man, however, 2008, Last Play At Shea concert are all great but during Piano Man, the crowd sings last verse to him. It will give you chills. Also the songs Billy the Kid and Captain Jack are a totally different side of Billy. Much love to you and your family. ❤

I love Billy Joel, I love this video. He's ex-wife, Christie Brinkley (the "redhead girl in the Chevrolet"), is in this video too (she was also in Uptown Girl and A Matter of Trust)...they were still married then. Billy is so talented and he can do it all and make it look easy! Fun fact: Comedian Richard Pryor is the guy reading the paper and getting shoe shine at the beginning of the video and comedian Joe Piscopo (Saturday Night Live) was the guy at the end reading the paper getting a shoe shine and gives the little boy a $100 bill! The eighties were great!! 💖💖

My step brother wrote an article in a small time local music magazine called Good Times. He basically wrote a negative review of Billy Joel's album Innocent Man which had the songs Uptown Girl and For the Longest Time. It was by Barry Milkman. We live on Long Island. Someone who knew Joel showed him the article and he called Barry. Not sure if they met or just spoke but Joel said it wasn't a sellout album but a tribute to the street corner cappella groups of the early 60s. Joel changed Barry's mind and the article was revised and the whole story of why. This video is like a response to people who put him on trial not literally but for his throwback to the music he grew up with.

I'm seeing several requests for "For the Longest Time," and I agree with that. It's one of my husband's favorites to play on the piano, but I add to that something with a totally different vibe, "And So It Goes." I loved the song from the first moment I heard it. It's beautiful both lyrically and musically. Also, I was in college when that song came out, and one of the professors used to walk around the halls whistling "And So It Goes," and whenever I hear that song, it makes me smile.

Billy Joel is just one of the many big time music icons both writing and singing some great tunes in so many decades. I love in this how he pays homage to the 50ties and it's just Fun! This was the 2nd video that his then wife- Model-Christie Brinkley was in of his, playing the " Redhaired girl". She was also in his song about her- Uptown Girl. BJoel has always been able to dip his pen into many different themes of music. I wish I could've seen him in concert a few times over the years. 😊

The headline on the newspaper at the end said "Billy Joel - An Innocent Man". That is a reference to the album that this song was on, "An Innocent Man". He also has a song by the same name from that album that you should check out. That album had a ton of top 40 songs on it, some of which you guys have already reacted to. "Tell Her About It" (No. 1), "Uptown Girl" (No. 3), "An Innocent Man" (No. 10), "The Longest Time" (No. 14), "Keeping the Faith" (No. 18), "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (No. 27).
