Loved growing up with Billy Joel. This song came out when I was 14. Rob Squad: Christie Brinkley was Billy Joel's wife at this time. She's in the video here a few scenes. She was the star of Joel's video Uptown Girl. And if you've seen the movie Vacation, she was the blonde in the red sports car and swimming buddy of Clark Griswald.

Christie is the beautiful blonde with a baby in her arms. The baby is their only shared child, Alexa Ray Joel born in 1985. She's now older than Billy and Christie were in this video.

Finally! This is unquestionably the most underrated Billy Joel song ever. Any given person can argue which is BEST, but this one deserved so much more respect than it gets.
Also, I'm always a sucker for "random people breaking into dancing in the street" scenes.

I figure that's largely driven by "classic rock" radio that plays the same dozen or so songs (which are good songs!) incessantly and this one once every couple of months. But whatever the cause, I seldom see anyone peg it as one of his best.

@@ellessandraramsay1841 Not trying to be a dick here but there was no "onwards" after River Of Dreams. At least not as far as pop/rock goes and only a classical for piano, instrumental album that he wrote but did not play on himself.
I agree River Of Dreams was not his best album but there were still some decent enough songs on there all the same.
"He always puts you in a good mood". No, he always makes you feel, whether that's joy, sadness or anger. Check out "Goodnight Saigon" for a really moving song that he wrote with the request and blessing of a veteran's group. He didn't serve but had friends who did, and he had mad respect for them and what they went through.

This song might be Billy Joel’s most underrated song and it always takes me back to ‘87. It’s such a great tune and the lyrics are awesome. It rocks!

A great, but sad song of Billy Joel's is Goodnight Saigon. It's about the Vietnam War and how the boys changed from before and after going to war. It's really a quintessential song from Billy.

That's what happened to me back in the mid 80's. I can remember he started the show with this song. I've probably seen him a half dozen times since. Every show is great!

Going to put this one out there again, because I'm hoping y'all will check this out when you have a chance: Billy Joel's "New York State Of Mind (from Old Grey Whistle Test)". It is live, it is amazing, you get up-close camera shots of his piano playing, and the saxophone player is also incredible. I have been watching y'all almost from the beginning, so I think I can say pretty confidently that you both would love it. :)

You're in for a real special concert seeing Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks next year!! Joel puts on a great show and has a very large list of songs in his playbook. And, then, Stevie is another legend including all those years with Fleetwood Mac. I'd love to hear them sing together. They are both close to 75 and are still touring and singing strong. THANK YOU, Jay and Amber, for always brightening my day with your positivity, your smiles and your appreciation for the music that I grew up with!

That child is their daughter Alexa Ray Joel, who is 37 years old now and a pianist and singer-songwriter herself. I remember seeing this video for the first time on BBC2 here in the UK, and it was also the first time I had seen Billy 'play' guitar, but it is frightening to think that it was nearly 40 years ago.
The Ray part of Alexa's name is after Ray Charles and he and Billy did a duet together called Baby Grand that was on the same album as this song.

I made a playlist for that song. I have 20 different versions. Sinatra, Oleta Adams, sax player Eric Marienthal. and Jazz singer Diane Schuur are some of my favorite versions other than Barbra's. Also some Big Band recordings of it as well. Has that song been chosen as NY's state song yet? Curious?
8:58 when you said "time capsule" my jaw dropped because that's also what I loved about this video, and video's like it. I was a teenager when this came out, so seeing some of the people felt a bit like I was re-visiting a past that I seem to miss more with each passing year.
I never heard a Billy Joel song that I didn't like but I have to say this is my favorite by the way he was married to Christie Brinkley and she is in this video holding their daughter , I think you only see them twice. My favorite album is The Stranger every song is fabulous

Great Billy Joel track from an often underrated album "The Bridge". Many song on side one I viewed as "tributes" to particular artists. This song has a Springsteen style. "This Is The Time" has a smooth Dire Straits vibe. "Running On Ice" has a new wave feel with The Police coming to mind. The drumming has Stewart Copeland written all.over it, as Joel's delivery has Sting's cadence. Steve Winwood and Cyndi Lauper are featured tracks. Ray Charles "My Baby Grand," is a legendary. I met Billy Joel at a restaurant next to my apartment that tour.

Billy is just miming. He didn't play guitar on the actual recording. The real guitarists were David Brown and Russell Javors, both of whom played on a number of Billy Joel albums.

By far the most beautiful Billy Joel song is Downeaster Alexa. He did so much for the fishing trade with that song, and it's just heartbreaking. "There ain't no island left for islanders like me."

When people saw Billy playing guitar they were shocked - he was the Piano Man! He laughed about it, saying he only could play some rhythm chords and doubted if his guitar was even plugged in!

I’ve been to 2 of his concerts. One solo & one with Elton John. He opened his solo concert with this one. It was unexpected & perfect. That “One, Two, One, Two, Three,Four” was such a good start & this is an under appreciated song.

I just Stevie and Billy in concert last night here in Minneapolis; great show but I do wish he had included this song in his set list as it is one of my favorites. A similar song is "All About Soul" but the song I think you should check out the most is "Goodnight Saigon." It is about the experiences of soldiers in the Vietnam War.

The 80s was such a magical time. Nearly every week there was a new number one by a different artist. Fun, fashion and music was on the way up the entire decade.
Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Bob Seger... so many 80s and 90s rockers made the 20th century leave on a high note at least.

Aside from rocking...lyrically this tune is profound.
Have seen Billy numerous times and not been disappointed once. He puts on a PHENOMONAL SHOW! He has such a great catalogue of music to draw upon and it makes for a great concert and Stevie Nicks will make it an all time great double bill. Only one time that I have seen Billy has there been any other act on the bill.
