New Zealand band from the early 90s. Originally called Otara Millionaires Club after the Otara Suburb of Auckland where lead singer Paul Fuemana grew up. Fuemana died in 2010 of a rare neurological disorder aged 40. His brother, also in the band, (in the back of the car in the video) died of a heart attack 5 years earlier, also aged 40

In interviews, Fuemana explained that the lyrics were not meant to have a literal meaning, but rather to capture the feeling of a wild and crazy road trip. He said that the phrase “how bizarre” was something he and his friends would say whenever they encountered something strange or unexpected.

One day this came on the radio and I quickly called my sister in Toronto (on a landline of course) and put the phone to the radio. Great to see a Kiwi song on this channel! This song was definitely a vibe, and peak 90s for us here in Australia and New Zealand. Got so much air time on the radio when i was growing up and still does.
Unfortunately it wss a bit of a one-hit wonder for this band. They made a decent amount of music, but this was really their only huge international hit. The band came from a bit of a rough background and actually had somewhat of a sad story. You can see an interesting doco about it here:
    ua-cam.com/video/-bZxrQPmPKg/v-deo.html
EDIT: if you want me to come right out and say it, I'll say it. Probably what's so unique about this song to you guys is the fact that the band is Maori. You've probably never heard that particular cultural influence come through in a big hit song before. Like even the lead singer's unusual cadence and accent is particularly Maori. That's the whole thing here. There's a bit of a mariachi influence and some general Pacific sounds, but the band are all Maori from Auckland (OMC stands for Otara Millionaires Club) and you can definitely hear that in their accent/voices if you know what to listen for. It's a very unique mix for sure - no matter whether you like it or not, it was obviously something a bit unique and different. I think both Jay and Amber reacted to it more or less how i would have expected, given how out there I was expecting that it would seem to them. I think the Pacific is very overlooked by the rest of the world.
BTW if you want to hear something similarly catchy but of an indigenous Australian persuasion, maybe try some Yothu Yindi - particularly "Treaty" or "Timeless Land". Be warned that while it will be 90s, it won't be as multicultural and Pacific, though.

SOABPBWMIMH is such a great example of a creative, interesting and unusual 90's song. Also the name Primitive Radio Gods. My 18 year old (Gen Alpha?) daughter just loves to see the names come up when I have the 80's and 90's channels on the satellite radio (especially when it's focused on "alternative" music of both decades). I guess it doesn't strike me as odd having frown up with them. But, yeah...
Toad the Wet Sprocket, Screaming Trees, Flock of Seagulls, Smashing Pumpkins, Fine Young Cannibals, Men without Hats (Yay, Canada!), Wall of Voodoo, The Flaming Lips, The Tragically Hip, (Yay, Canada!), Space Hog, Shreikback, Echo & the Bunnymen, Red Hot Chili Pepppers, Bronski Beat, School of Fish, Tripping Daisy, Pet Shop Boys, Third Eye Blind, Wang Chung, Hole, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Spin Doctors, the Pixies, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Oingo Boingo, Weezer, Barenaked Ladies (Yay, Canada!), the Goo Goo Dolls, the B-52's (Sorry they didn't resonate with you Jay!), Violent Femmes, Spandau Ballet, Dishwalla, 54-40 (Yay, Canada!), Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, The Presidents of the United States of America, Kajagoogoo, CAKE, Incubus, The Dream Academy, Dinosaur Jr., Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jane's Addiction, XTC, Icicle Works, the Verve Pipe, Kon Kan (Yay, Canada!), Love and Rockets, Porno for Pyros, Re-Flex, Frankie goes to Hollywood, The Divinyls, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The La's, The Breeders, Rancid, Placebo, Semisonic, They Might Be Giants, Big Audio Dynamite, Husker Du, the Blow Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Timbuk 3, Bananarama, The Lightning Seeds, Martha and the Muffins (Yay, Canada!), Blind Melon, Bjork, The Lemonheads, Soul Asylum, The Stone Roses, Butthole Surfers, Crash Test Dummies (Yay, Canada!), Hootie & the Blowfish, the Dandy Warhols, Pulp, Blur, Supergrass, Gorillaz....
Okay. I'll stop. This is just a sampling of band names on my Spotify playlist. I'll be 51 in a few weeks. How about some of my fellow Gen X'ers back me up. Who knows music from any or all of the above. Give me a shout out!
RSR gang, you're the best! Keep on being you and doing what you do. You always bring a smile to my face (even when you're disappointed in the song your reacting to).

Greetings from New Zealand, thanks for listening to one of the most successful songs to come from here. There is a great wealth of off beat and odd music that has come from NZ, perhaps try some Split Enz, The Dudes, The Exponents, Dragon, or perhaps some Fat Freddys Drop (I recommend anything from the Based on a True Story album, or better still, listen to it all), or one of the many 'Dunedin sound' bands of the 1970's/80's, The Clean or The Chills. There are also some very good contemporary bands like Six Sixty, Shihad and of course Lorde to name a few.

4:33 when I was a teenager in the 90’s and we’d cruise around and leave drive-in movies or any other weird moment or party, we’d also get in the car and say “how bizarre?” And then laugh. Lots of random things happened during our teenage and high school years and this was our go-to saying. Our senior sweatshirts (class of 2000) simply said “how bizarre” and the teachers, administration, and parents hates our saying and didn’t understand why we wanted it. But it got our class and all our experiences. “C/o 2000 How Bizarre” was perfect for our class sweatshirt and theme!

I was a teenager in the 90's, and that decade established my taste in music that the 80's had only begun to define. Here are a just a few: "Walking On The Sun" by Smash Mouth, "TubThumping" by Chumbawumba, "Your Woman" by White Town, "Tomorrow" by silverchair, "El Scorcho" by Weezer (yes, I bring this one up again 😂), "Passenger" by Powderfinger, "Calypso" by Spiderbait, "Military Strongmen" by Jebediah, and "Cosmic Girl" by Jamiroquai.

The 90s were such a great time for music. It wasn’t all boy bands and bubblegum pop singers. I remember Canada alone produced some great music, including Amanda Marshall, a soul rock singer who had such hits as Let It Rain, Birmingham, Believe In You and Fall From Grace. Her live performances in the 90s were epic and she’s back after a 15 year hiatus where she was screwed over by her record company. If you dig old school hip hop, Maestro Fresh Wes is one of the best to come out of Canada. Let Your Backbone Slide is legendary.
