I was only a kid back then and "When You See A Chance" dominated radio to such a degree that you sang along before knowing who the artist was. Such a timeless iconic Winwood classic. I've said a billion times: Steve Winwood is Goodwood. He's musical salve for the soul. 😊
I listened to this song following a transplant, heart attack, and bypass surgeries within a 4 month period, followed by therapy. Stevie Winwood carried me through the years.
One of my favorite voices. Great song choice! Love the mandolin and James Taylor’s backing vocals. I recommend “While You See A Chance” for your next Steve Winwood song.
This man joined the Spencer Davis Group when he was 14 years old, Island Records. Producer and founder Chris Blackwell later said of Winwood, "He was really the cornerstone of Island Records. At age 16 the Spencer Davis Groups' first recording became a hit. He moved on to Traffic and Blind Faith, before starting his solo career..

James Taylor singing backup! The story behind the mandolin, according to one biography about Steve... He and his first wife divorced. He got the house, which he had purchased before they married. She got the contents of the house. When Steve returned to the house after his ex had left, the only things left in the house were a table, and a mandolin. He turned a heavy blow into a song of hope and looking forward, not backwards. Well done, Steve. It's time you guys plunged into Traffic, the second band Steve was in. Some deep cuts - 40,000 Headmen, Every Mother's Son, Freedom Rider, Walking In The Wind.
'Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?' and 'While You See A Chance' are two of my favorite Steve Winwood songs. He also wrote and sang an excellent song called 'I'm a Man,' but you might want to listen to Chicago's version of that song first.
This reminds me of my very best childhood friend, who unfortunately is no longer here. We listened to Steve Winwood in front of a bonfire in the garden and drank lots of excellet red wine. The entire album brings both joy and tears to my eyes 😥
That Back In The High Life album was huge when I was a junior at Marion High School, SC in 1986. That laid back music with those poetic words helped us focus on the positive. God Bless.
Time to do some early Steve Winwood, the man was a genuine prodigy, his first hits with The Spencer Davis Group, Gimme Some Loving and I’m a Man came out when he was just 16 and were songs he wrote when he was 14. They still rock 60 years later. ✌️
The Finer Things is another great song from his solo career. However, his former band, Traffic, has some incredible songs. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Empty Pages, and Glad/Freedom Rider are not to be missed. Always great to hear Mr. Winwood!
@lokivt haha yeah maybe it will get in rotation! I've been giving some great suggestions for the past year, since I became a sub, but I know they get TONS of suggestions so I'm patient!
I remember when this song first came out. I just broke up with someone and lost my job. This song helped encourage my motivation to kick into high gear. New love and a new job came quickly. How can this song not lift your spirits? !!!
You really need to hear his early songs from the 60’s when he was in the Spencer Davis Group. Gimme Some Lovin’ and I’m a Man are only two of his best from him. C’mon guys!
You have so much to discover yet in Steve Winwood's catalog. His start with the Spencer Davis Group at the age of 17 writing and singing hit songs like Gimme Some Lovin' and I'm A Man. The one album from the supergroup Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton) and the beautiful song Can't Find My Way Home. His years with Traffic (such an amazing band) and so many great songs on so many great albums. Dear Mr. Fantasy, The Low Spark Of High-heeled Boys, John Barleycorn Must Die, Paper Sun, Medicated Goo and so much more.
I am at that age now where I know how my parents felt when there old songs where played .It brings back good memories but at the same time there is a deep sadness that it is gone forever .
When his album "Arc Of The Diver" came out, there were a few singles lifted, and they were all fire. I'd never heard of him before, but back then, radio DJs use to throw it bits of info at you (there was no internet to look people up!!) and I realised I had heard (and enjoyed) music he'd done with other bands over the years.
This was his return song... He'd been on top; he stepped away, and years passed; and he came back and showed that time had not passed HIM by. And so it was; he had a second big rock and roll career.
If you're looking for an upbeat tempo try "I'm a Man" or "Gimme Some Loving" both from the Spencer Davis Group featuring Steve Winwood on lead vocals. Both these songs will rock your world with Steve Winwood vibing with his vocals. You'll be snapping your fingers and stomping your feet.
Steve Winwood is such an underrated genius! He had a lot of success VERY early on, then had a lull in his career. This song was indicative of his return to stardom, and I love the message. If you haven't already, listen to "Gimme Some Lovin'" from The Spencer Davis Group. Steve is the lead singer on it, and he was SIXTEEN when they recorded it. Absolutely amazing! This man has an incredibly amount of soul and talent.
Remember when they filmed this in Manassas VA and surrounding areas near Warrenton. People were massed all around off camera to get a glimpse of Winwood
I saw Steve Winwood in the late 90’s at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. He started Back in the Highlife…they played the intro and Steve accidentally started on the 2nd verse. He waved his band to stop and acknowledged his mistake and started over. He wanted to give everyone what they came for
James Taylor's backing vocals during the chorus of this song are perfect. You guys have got to get into Steve's early stuff with the Spencer Davis Group.
My Mom is a big fan of Steve Winwood. His songs carry people through some hard times, including me. I have been through some pretty difficult stretches of my life, but songs like this carry me forward
Steve Winwood is an amazing artist he started off as the singer and playing piano with The Spencer Davis Band then went on to form the band Traffic playing piano, guitar and lead vocalist then went to his solo career in the 80's and just exploded. He is the true Goat!!!
I got to see Winwood & Petty together in the summer of 2014. They both dazzled. They still had it! Sadly, Petty was gone a couple of years later, which made the memory of that evening even more special to me.
One of my favorite artist. An EXTREMELY TALENTED MUSICIAN. Quite a long and deep career. Puts on a great show! Can't miss with his music going all the way back to Spencer Davis. Love to hear more! Another great show guys. Keep up the good work!
I had the biggest crush on Steve Winwood in the 80s. Never got the chance to see him live in concert. I played his Arc of a Diver album every day for ages!
One thing I like, both about the song and the video, is that to him, the High Life is not a fancy condo in a manhatten high rise, or a fancy car. It's finding connection, having someone special, drink and dance with one hand free, just enjoying the moment, and who gives a flying rip what any onlookers may think of them.
This reminds me of traveling across the country with my mother, as a 19year old. We quickly grew tired of the radio. Found this album at a truck stop store, and played the heck out of it!❤
Steve has an immediately recognisable voice. From Spencer Davis group to present time, you cannot miss his fantastic voice. A top ten voice of all time for me. Great vid,.
Next Steve Winwood: Gimme Some Lovin!! He did it as part of the Spencer Davis Group, which he joined when he was 14! He'd been playing professionally with his dad & brother in pubs etc since he was 8 and backing up touring American Blues musicians in the UK since he was a teen. Gimme Some Lovin is one of the most famous rock/pop songs ever and very upbeat..you'll love it.
Beautiful. Just beautiful. I love myself some Steve Winwood. I feel he can be underrated and slightly overlooked at times, but he truly contributed so much to music at that time. There's nothing like the 80's. I'm so glad I grew up in this decade. I'm soon to be 50 and I still choose this decade over all the others. I'm not taking away from other decades. They all had great music but the 80's speak to my heart even until today.
One of my faves from Steve. So soothing and uplifting at the same time. He does that really well with just his voice, never mind the lyrics themselves.
I got to see her open up for Steve + his band several years ago ! That was great to see her have her chance in the spotlight and she did really well. That duet with her Dad was one of the highlights for sure.
Steve Winwood has an incredible history. He joined the Spencer Davis Group at the age of 14, recording "I'm a Man" at 16. He then went on to join the group Traffic with Dave Mason, where his vocals shone on "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys." Next came Blind Faith ("Can't Find My Way Home"). His subsequent stint with Ginger Baker's Air Force included just two songs with his vocals and one with him on keyboard. The group was short-lived and produced some good performances but no hits. Finally, he went solo in 1977, producing hits like the one featured here.
It's such an understated, yet totally catchy melody. The chorus gives me joy. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is one of my favourite Steve Winwood tracks (in the group Traffic)
Somebody probably already mentioned this, but the woman that Steve is dancing with in the video is his wife Eugenia. And she was 8 months pregnant with their first child. The video was filmed inManassas, Virgina. And James Taylor is singing back up vocals.😊
The chorus background vocals are done by James Taylor. I think Steve Winwood's voice, which is amazing blends really well with James Taylor. Winwood is a genius! Thanks for playing his music.
"While You See A Chance" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Steve Winwood is extremely talented.
A DEFINITE must-listen!
'Arc of a Diver' was such a great album. My intro to solo Steve Winwood.

When you see a chance is a must!!!!!
My late brother loved this song so much he wanted it played at his funeral. It is one of my absolute favorites.
Sorry about your brother great song to play to memorialize him.
I listened to this song following a transplant, heart attack, and bypass surgeries within a 4 month period, followed by therapy. Stevie Winwood carried me through the years.

So sorry for your loss. Great taste for sure. 💛🌼🥺🙏🏼
It’s a beautiful song!
"Back in the High Life Again" peaked @ #13 on the Billboard Hot100 in 1987. James Taylor provides the backing vocal.
I thought that was JT.
I never knew that about James Taylor. Good to know.
@@loristone9242 There is that one point at the end of the song where JT he sings a solo part. know that you know, becomes perfectly clear it is him.
I had just started dating my now husband that year. I love this song.
Even when Winwood's being mellow... he's more soulful than most singers on the scene.
Very well said!
One of my favorite voices. Great song choice! Love the mandolin and James Taylor’s backing vocals. I recommend “While You See A Chance” for your next Steve Winwood song.

Great song!
I agree, be nice to pay a tribute to Robbie Robertson
Great tune!
I agree! 🙌🏻💯‼️
You knew that Steve Winwood played organ on Robbie's "How To Become Clairvoyant" album, right? 😉
This album, Peter Gabriel’s “So” and Paul Simon’s “Graceland” were all released within a few months of each other. A great time in pop/rock music
Indeed! 😊
👏👏👏👏👏
Absolutely! All brilliant artists. Why don't we have people like this in the mainstream charts (like Spotify) any more? Such creativity 🥰
Exactly, those albums are part of my youth and the sound tracks of my life.
Oh my goodness! I still play Graceland from beginning to end on days when I need some sunshine for my soul.
36 years ago, after a hard time in life, I met the love of my life, and this song was on the radio. I'll never forget it.
Don't forget, Mr. Fantasy. That is Steve in Traffic
One of my favorites of Steve Winwood was When You See a Chance.
Great suggestion 🥰
And, yup, Steve played mandolin. The guy can play so many things. Huge talent of which I am so impressed...even after all these years.
Can't deny this tune. One of his greatest. A favorite of mine, along with Winwood's "The Finer Things" ( Which is different but still very similar)
“The Finer Things” was my introduction to Steve Winwood. Love that song.
Steve Winwood, Traffic, "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" Just great!!!
Steve’s wonderful voice has graced many classics over the decades, you should check out Blind Faith - Can’t Find My Way Home
GREAT suggestion ❤
One of the best songs EVER.
He made such feel good hits! It's impossible to be in a bad mood listening to things like this, Higher Love, While You See A Chance etc.
