How Women Can Get Stronger at Pushups (Using Resistance Bands)

  • This exercise is especially effective for overweight people who just have too much bodyweight to be able to do pushups effectively for enough reps to induce an adaptive response and progression.
    Furthermore, doing pushups from your knees is not a very effective exercise in any way, shape or form. Pushups from the knees should be a last resort at best and I have done other videos on how to progress pushups from beginner to advance level.
    For executing assisted pushups with resistance bands, select a good tension level of resistance band (the weaker you are at pushups the higher the tension of band you want to use.)
    Attach the band to any vertical support base and step inside the band loop. The higher you make the band on the support axis, the more tension the band will absorb as you execute the pushup.
    Secure the band in and around the pelvis and descend into a pushups position as you see here.
    As you descend into the most difficult parts of the pushup the band will take away from full bodyweight and still allow you to execute the pushup effectively as it should be performed.
    From the initial trials of doing ‘band assisted pushups’ you will be able to progress the pushups accordingly with lighter tension bands till you can execute the pushups entirely on your own.

    Do you recommend the band to support from the top(say tied and supporting from a pull up bar) rather than from the side.
    What's the best area to place the band - chest or waist or pelvic area?

      Yes and yes - depends on someone's strength levels etc - so, it's a 'feel it out' process to see what level of unloading is best fit - not just the band position, but the right resistance levels of the band to use as well - hope that helps
