I should have watched this video before tearing my truck apart. Passenger side 1998 for Ranger. I got stick on the rivets. Did not know what to do. Watched your video ... piece of cake. Had to run to Wal-Mart afterhours to get bolts/nuts & washers. Thanks again so much. You are absolutely incredible.
Great tutorial! Everything was just as you described. I used 1/4" bolts that were 3/4" long (there's actually quite a bit of open space to have 1" or even 1.5" bolts if you so choose but the 3/4" worked for me). The hardest part of the job was getting the internal door off and back on again lol.

BOLT SIZE: 1/4” and 3/4” long. I used a lock nut on the back and it worked perfectly. For the chisel i used a philips and a small hammer. Repaired a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT with this. Thanks Again!!!
Best video....was doing this job and kept getting stuck at hooking up the damn rod, this vid described and showed how to do the rod easiest way, thank you.
Usually there are a couple of small plastic clips that hold the rods to the door panel. It you remove them, you should be able to remove the rods from the door handle and then remove the outer handle from the truck. Hope this helps you out.

Great tutorial. Thanks a bunch. Followed procedure to a T. Works like a charm. One thing though , the yellow clip on the door rod should be gently pried off by hand or flat screw driver . On divers side push it to back pannel of door. On passenger side is just opposite before using the hammer and punch to bust rivets. Also it must be the first thing connected before putting in the nuts and bolts. Just my 00.02 cents.
@mstblue Punching out and drilling the rivets is the most technical part. Beyond that it is pretty basic. It probably took me an hour including all the time to film. Probably takes me 30 minutes without filming. I would say a person trying it for the first time should give themselves a good hour.

Thanks for posting this video. I had a broken handle, on the drivers side. I was using the passenger side to open the truck, having to lean across time to get the door open, lol. After i saw this video, i ordered the part, and got the whole job done in about 30 min. I wish i could have bought the part through 1AAuto, but it was out of stock...

You can rivet them back on or bolt them back on. There's not really any certain size, if you get a couple of nuts and bolts from the store that fit through the hole properly without a lot of play, you should be fine. Thank you for your order. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have followed your instructions to remove my broken handle, how ever the rod that opens the latch came off in my hand. On my 2000 Ranger the connection of the Rod is a slot. The end that works the latch can not be seen to reattach it. Any sudgestions? Max
just bought a 96 model today and the outer door handle on both sides must be out of adjustment , they barely trip the latch at the very top of the upward pull. So are they wore or just need adjustment to this rod you mentioned?
i have a 94 ford ranger, i have just replace driver side door latch i noticed that the rod that aloows outside handle to open door does not fit the new latch i put in, inside handle fits fine and the lock fits fine, the latch came with a smooth hole that is slightly smaller than stock that opens up and clips together, my question is. can i buy a rod that is smoothed at bottom intsead of threaded?
I have a 98 Ranger and I'm actually having a problem with the rod that attaches to the outside handle from the inside. It's bent and it's preventing the outide door handle from correctly latching on and activating the latch to open the door. I've tried to access it and bend it to a straighter position, but it's proven difficult to get into the door and do that. Can you give me some advice with fixing this problem?

Thanks a bunch. I dont think I would have been able to figure this out without your good video. Actually I had trouble just getting the door panel off, but Ford has a better design than the GMs I am used to. Where the down rod attaches to the lock mechanism is very hard to see how it connects, now I know what to do. I wish the car companies would make door handles out of metal (like they used to) instead of plastic .... I have also had the door handles snap off on my 99 Camry. Seems like everyone who has an older Camry - who lives where there is freezing rain to freeze the doors shut - has this same problem.
These instructions actually apply to all manual locked models up to at least 2010, the only difference is the interior panel is a bit different, and you only have to remove a small section of the panel on the newer models (2004-2010), although it makes the removing the rod attached to the handle easier if you do.. Replacing the handle itself, is basically the same.

I have a 95 Ranger just like this. When I put my key in, the truck chimes and dome light on as if a door is open. Chiming constantly while Im driving. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
+Bill Wilson Thanks for checking us out! We currently don't have a video on this issue with a repair but it may have to do with the ground for the ignition chime and always being activated. That would be the best place to start without purchasing a part. If there is no issue with that, we would recommend taking this to a mechanic and having them physically look into this for you. 1aauto.com

is that the same brittle plastic clip that the tailgate rods clip into? I had mine snap the 2nd time I tried to open the tailgate when I bought my truck
Okay you're not showing any pictures of installing the bolts and stuff and you didn't show after you drilled out the rivets can you re rivet or do you have to use bolts and what size bolts into the does the new door handle come with a bolt or do you have to go find them yourself
I followed the procedure shown in the video but the "yellow clip" broke. The new handle is on now but I can't connect it to the latch assembly. How do I replace the yellow clip? I'm now worse off than I was before.

@gabrielmontagemaker You could try to go into the other door if it opens, and open the one that's broke from the inside so that you can repair it.
@gabrielmontagemaker If the handle works on the drivers side when attached. I would re-attach it to the door with screws or rivits.

Take a close look at that latch. if the "claws" are jammed into the up position, you can tap them down with a flat head screw driver
Do you know if the ranger and mazda have the same rods that connect the handle to the door lock operator
@dpl1108121 Yes you can use rivets.
