Just bought an 02 Ranger XLT. Came with one broke door latch and the other one just gave out on me. Going to make the repair this weekend. Thanks for the video!
My 2004 Ranger latch just failed, after watching countless other videos on the subject yours was the most clear (camera work)and concise explanation. I know I'll save a lot of money.
There are other videos of this but this is by far the best one. I was having trouble taking out the cable from the top latch but with your video I should be able to do it
@@thrillbilly9785 from mexico I really thank you your video is the best thank you for doing this sincerely thank you I was looking for someone who really did. The whole process thank you
You should not take the cable out of the latch. The latches are manufactured with the cable installed. That little ball at the end was not made to be removed from the latch. Remove the other end of the cable from the handle to install new sleeves.
Thanks for the video. It’s the best on UA-cam. My Ranger is 2001 I am the original owner. My lovely truck has217356 miles. V6 4.0 4x4 My wife says I should get something new or newer. My Ranger is perfect for me. It’s all about maintenance. Thanks again for the video. May God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the parts and finished install on both doors today. I still need to figure out a replacement for the rivets but I will get to it. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this fix on my own!
Thank you for the feedback! Glad you got this done. I’m sure you’ve got a great sense of satisfaction knowing you repaired it yourself and saved money doing it. 😎👍
Thanks for the tutorial! Im guessing youre in tech line of work. Nice editing! The funny ques I could never do lol. I got every one of them, I have kids so I can relate. Good job. Ordered the parts tonight. Ill reply to this once finished.
Thank you for the feedback! Glad this video was of help to you. Yes, I’ve spent almost 20 years in the graphic arts field. I’ve shifted gears recently into a new career but this channel lets me continue to have a creative outlet.
Hi Billy A new sub here.... Thank You so much for this instructional video. There are several other videos on this, but your was by far the best; giving a little confidence. I ordered the parts from Amazon. Thank You, Matt
Drilling out rivets is a true PITA. It's especially fun to replace the power window actuators. They have very large rivets fastening them, two of which go thru the glass holding it to the actuator arm. What a mess and a frustrating challenge. Thanx Ford!!
Very helpful, sir. Got all my ends on, the door now opens. However, now the top latch won't snap into locked/secure position when I close it. Bottom works fine...
My only thought is to ensure the cable isn’t too tight which means the latch won’t close. That or lubricate the mechanism to ensure free movement to close.
@@thrillbilly9785 I was trying to do this repair today and didn’t know I needed the cammed cable holders for the top latch. I have a 2006 Ranger and its the same.
Would you happen to have the link for the parts you used or the name? (Edit: anyone that’s looking for the part name you can literally look up “Ranger door latch repair kit”)
Thanks. I got it on but I have to adjust it because the latch/locking mechanism is not engaging correctly . Door will not stay closed….gotta pull a little bit more!
The videos I have seen about these ridiculous door latches are all incorrect or partially correct. The plastic sleeves that fit on the ends of the door latch cables disintegrate. This is on my 2006 ford ranger. It has an upper and a lower latch on the rear doors. (extended cab). New latches for this thing cost a hundred dollars each. But new metal sleeves to repair the cables can be bought for 10 dollars. The rear door handles must be removed. First punch the center out of the rivets holding them in place then drill the rivets out. Remove the cables from the handles by sliding the plastic sliders back. Then remove the top and front latches. The cables on the latches must not and cannot be removed. Make enough slack in the cable to install the new sleeves on the latches. This must be done first as you cannot get the cables balls out of the latches. Then install the new sleeves on the door handle cables. There are plastic sliders on the handles that hold the handle cables in place. Then use long nose pliers to install the cables in the door handles. You can use new rivets to reinstall the handles but a short sheet metal screw is better.
Currently not for sale. I purchased the truck several years ago for 200 dollars. It had sat in the previous owners driveway for over 10 years! I put in a new fuel pump and battery and it fired right up. Great little trucks!
Have your door latches failed yet?
BOTH of mine, oof. Been scratching my head for a while trying to figure out how to fix it. Yours is the first video I've found - thanks!

Two f150's and now a ford ranger. All of them I had this same issue.

This is one of the best videos on this subject. New cable guides arrived from A**zon. I and my 2000 Ranger thank you.

Thank you so VERY much for your excellent tutorial. I could not have done the job without this.

Knockout the pins on rivets before drilling. It makes it easier. Great job. Thanks for sharing.
Never would have thought to do that. Seems that would have saved me some aggravation. Thanks for the tip!
Great Video and editing, best one I've seen, Ive got an 02 Ranger that needs both doors done 😢. Thanks

I just did this repair. The easiest thing to replace the factory rivets that I know of is an aluminum 3/16” pop rivet.

Ah engineering, the delicate balance of complicated function over servicing.
Good job. Funny about the bug.
Great vid! Thanks!
Ive got to do the same to mine :) Good video :)

If the sleeves are difficult to slide over the cable, drill the sleeves to 13/64". The will slide on much easier, without cutting back the sheath.
Both of mine failed at the same time yesterday. Can I get a link for the replacements
Sorry to hear both failed at the same time. Search for Ford extended cab door latch repair on Amazon and you will get a ton of them pop up.
I’m not good at this and just want to sell the truck. Can’t I just e6000 (superglue) the little plastic part that moves to the side so it feeds right?
Are the 2005 Ranger extended cab door latches the same?
I’m not sure. If I had to guess I would think they would be the same. They didn’t change these trucks very much over the years.
Also is there a link for amazon for the parts?
By far the best video for fixing the door latch cable problem. Do they also work on a 2003 Ranger?
Thanks for the feedback. I’m not sure about the 03, but can only assume it will be the same.

Great video. Does piece with cam go on top of each door only and not at bottom?
If I remember correctly, there was only one cam piece per door. The location I installed it will be the same on the opposite door too.

$1500. WHEN EVER you ready. Im from brownsville texas
Knock the center pins back out of the rivets first!!! Then drill them out.
Filing this away for future use!
Part number??
What if the cable is no longer showing under the door pull
Likely it’s down in the door. My guess is the cable has snapped and will need to be replaced.
now it won’t even latch shut
What a pain in the butt
Yup Ford has a better idea , have a 2001 have repaired every switch ,button and sensor . Now on the second transmission.
