My 2002 F150 shift indicator just broke and I was so happy that you had a video that covered this issue. Unfortunately my cable bracket was broken in three places and the epoxy wouldn't work. I was lucky as one of my local auto parts stores actually had one in stock. Everything went just like the video and I was able to have everything repaired for under $15 and an hour of my time. Thank you SO much for this video. It was much easier than I thought to replace the broken gear indicator piece. I was also glad that you added the part about checking the screws to the shifter, as mine were loose too. Took about 30 minutes to remove, replace, secure the bolts, and put the panel back on!

I don't drive auto transmission vehicles; I'll never need to do this repair. But I still watched the whole video from start to finish - how he makes them so entertaining I'll never know. You just CANNOT beat a ChrisFix video.

I did it! I am a lady of 59 and my 99 Ranger that looks exactly like your truck, color and all, had this problem. I ran across your video instructions and followed them exactly! It took me about an hour and I epoxied and used the zip ties. With your videos I can do these repairs and save money. Thank you ChrisFix!
Totally worked, thank you again for your time in making this video! I used epoxy and for a back up, I used two zip ties. Tonight is the first night, so hopefully the epoxy holds. At the very least, I learned how to easily remove the bottom of the dash, locate the part and if I need to I'll get a new one if this doesn't hold. A+ sir! A tip of the cap to you.
UPDATE: Fixed it!!! Thank you Thank you @ChrisFix!!! Now my shifter feels new and my truck feels like it can run another 100k. Here's what happened. I couldn't find 1/2 of the supplies at Pep Boys so I decided to disassemble the dash to take a peak and see if I need to order the plastic part from Amazon. It took about 2-1/2 hours because I had to squeeze in upside down like in some weird sex position to see underneath the dash. I also used a handheld mirror placed on the floor mat so I wouldn't have to disassemble the screws while upside down. As it turned out, the plastic was in tact and all I had to do was adjust the little wheel. Then the gear stick was still a little loose so I located the gear screw like you show in the video. Since I didn't have any blue adhesive, I just tighten the gear screw which was loose. Wow...right away I could feel the shifter stop being loose. (I'll go back after I find the blue adhesive) Meanwhile I'm all upside down and cursing because it was really tight. I know when I asked my mechanic about this months ago, they didn't want to deal with it because they figured this was going to be a costly diagnostic problem so I have to ask you:
1. How did you know that plastic and wheel was the problem and the screw at the gear shift was loose? I would have logically assumed something was going on with the stick and disassembled the dash.
2. How did you film all of this? I could not even get my hands or head under and in between all those wires to get to the screws.
Anyways, you are a !#$%^ inspiration. I'm going to show my mechanic your "Cranks but won't start" video and see if I can do that myself since they tried some diagnostic and coil replacement stuff and the truck still shakes like crazy at 2000 rpm.

Can you list (or link & size) all the equipment and supplies necessary, as I don't have any of them, and will need to buy them at the local Pep Boys? Epoxy, blue adhesive, threaded torque wrench, zip ties.
I wonder why auto designers use a plastic part instead of metal? They must be idiots if the newer model trucks use the same design.
I have a 1999 Mazda truck which has the same exact problems as ChrisFix... down to the dead instrument lights. It's like finding a long lost brother with the same cancer LOL.
The other day, my truck just died in the parking lot. It took me a hour of slamming the gear shift back and forth until some mysterious reason, it started back up again.
I have a 2002 F-150. Had the same problem; however did not have to remove the panel below steering column. Simply looked up there with a flashlight and could see adjustment wheel and locking mechanism (not broken). It took about 10 seconds of adjusting and was corrected. I haven't even tried looking at mine but it doesnt even move I could go into drive and it's still in park on the gadge so it's kinda a guessing game
Thanks for the help. I couldn't get my seat to go back (electric, another problem, later) so I did it without moving seat, makes it much harder, sore back.
My problem is that once I exposed the broken piece, I rolled the adjuster and it wouldn't move the indicator. I had to pull the wire to get the initial look to get to the "P".
Maybe I'm missing something. I'm in Arizona, and like to get to certain stages on these fixes--yours are hands down, the most precise and easy to follow I've seen, an again thanks for that. It's real hot here now--117 degree stretch of three days coming, and I am a retired, full-time RV guy. My fix is being applied to a 2010 Ford Explorer Sport--SUV, not the pickup.
If I literally pull the wire that loops onto the catch, I can get it to move easily to the "P" position on the indicator. But, using the cog adjuster as far as I can spin it to the left, I get no movement in the indicator.
Do I need to maybe adjust the position of the "stopper" that is installed just to the left of the broken piece? While holding it, when trying to use the cog--it was far to the right when I first looked at it after removing the metal plate--I just have too much "play" in the wire I guess is the best I can say it.
Anybody got any idea of the moving the stopper "sleeve" near the piece that is still attached after I've gotten to that point?
I don't want to start messing with the wire itself. It seems like it needs to be "shortened" somehow to allow the adjustment cog to work.

I still need to tackle the extra fix you suggest. I'm getting a slight "kerplunk" when shifting between certain gears, like a loose "u" joint, but it's not consistent, and sometimes doesn't even happen so I think it's probably the other fix you recommend.
You've been a great help, and, as said, your vids are lucid and do-able. I'm 69, but feel comfortable working with your help.

+LittleGojira, that metal part is important for your safety in case of an accident. It prevents protrusion of the stuff under the dash in case of a collision.

Watching this video allowed me to fix the problem with a new shift indicator. One of the screws that you pointed out gets loose had actually fallen out. When that happens, you cannot adjust the position. If you tighten them up, it becomes an easy fix. Thanks for the video. It really helped!
Your video was great. After watching it, i went outside and fixed my Ford in 30 minutes. Now no more stress on trying to jam it in park and starting.

About 5-6 years ago, something happened, Chris completely changed the way he shoots his videos. Still the same content but the energy is completely different. The old “hey guys” part was shot in zombie mode, the new one “cheerful zombie slayer” 😁.
For me his current energy is extremely annoying to the point I sometimes have to pause the video just to be able to bare with it. His tutorials are so well done though it's worth sitting through it. I much prefer this style with a little bit more energy than the current one.

Thank you. Fixed it in less than 20 mins, been bothering me for years. The plastic wasn't even broken, the wheel thing just got loose. FYI, the plastic piece that was glued can be ordered new from Amazon. Dorman 83244 Auto Transmission Shift Indicator Bracket. Thank you for this video. I just purchased a 1999 Mazda B4000 and with the help of this video it was an easy fix.
For a permanent super duty repair just replace those plastics for metal bolts.

Great video. If you have access to a parts store that's close, the Dorman Part #83244 is about the same price ($11-15 depending on the retailer) as the epoxy (that I NEVER have on hand).

The video was good enough to get me through the fix this weekend for my 2002 f-150. Take your time. Be mindful of the three different sockets you need. More screws for my truck that the one shown but the fix is spot on. I was actually amazed everything went as well as it did. Thanks.

They tried to claim is was at the transmission linkage and that it was likely bent. 99 was to find that out not even fix it.

Good video there ChrisFix, it's quick, concise and no unnecessary blah blah. I watched the whole thing and don't even own any of those cars, you mentioned. Never the less, it is good information that I'll catalog in my brain for that future "just in case" use. One thing I've learned about gluing is, to make a glue joint stronger embed a medium into the glue. I have found the best stuff to use is old used dryer sheets. You know the fibrous kind not the foam kind. They have to be used so there is no chemicals left that might react to the glue. Plus they are easy to cut into odd shapes. I fixed both interior car handles on my moms 2013 Chevy Aveo. They are notorious for breaking in half. Bad bad Chevy design. I can't do anything about the plastic chrome that came off of them but they won't break again.
I used the two zip tie method...worked like a charm! And I have to laugh, fixing cheap plastic with more cheap plastic. If I get 10,000 miles out of this fix I'll be happy. Oh, and didn't have to pull any panels, but was a little tight working. The bracket and adjustment knob are a lot smaller than I expected. It's located a little right (passenger side) of the bottom of the steering column. Truck is a '98 F150.

I'm glad I watched your video, as I was going about fixing the problem totally wrong.
I was under my Expedition thinking I had to disconnect the shift linkage and adjust it.
I couldn't get it off as the front drive shaft was in the way (4X4), so I stoped and went to you tube. Your video came up, Thanks for an excellent video, I used 2 tiny zip ties around the broken plastic, no glue, works great ! Quick and easy ! !

Thank You so much after four hours and a trip to Napa Auto parts I was able to replace the broken clip it works fine now! I even got a car wash!!! Couldn't find the replacement part from Ford (mine broke at the top and couldn't use epoxy). But a couple of zip ties later, worked great. Thanks for the video - well done and very useful. One of the better I've watched on the net.

Thanks Chris. I always watch your vids when I need to fix my 2000 Mazda B3000 3.0L 4x4 . I rebuilt my engine and replaced my trany, transfer case, rear end and I watched your vids to do that. I really do appreciate it.
I would think about just putting a nut that threads on that on one side of the broken plastic piece and have the nut that already came on there on the other side. that would lock it in place where it would need to go

Hey young man "AWESOME" video you did a great job... Although I'm experienced with auto repair, your video is very well done to show those who aren't as mechanically educated.
My son and I just yesterday ( Jan 17/23 ) replaced the shift rod that actually snapped right in half and even though we got it all fixed, the gear indicator wasn't working so I wasn't able to stay and try and fix it. I wish I had of seen this video yesterday cause we would have had this done for sure.

Thank you for posting this video. My wife's 2002 Ranger Tremor just did the same thing. It was broken too. I bought a new part and just replaced it. Easy to do thanks to your guidance. I checked the two linkage bolts and they were tight.

Excellent tutorial. This is such a common problem on these Ford’s, it’s ridiculous. There’s now a metal aftermarket replacement, I highly recommend it. It’s not worth buying another cheap plastic one just for this to happen again.
Great video Chris. I had no idea about those 2 screws. I thought it was tube bushing, that was needed to fix the play. I immediately tightened those screws after watching your video and its fixed. Awesome. You saved me a lot of money! Thanks!

I've owned more used cars than I care to admit, all of them requiring repair. I learned a ton about cars (to the point that I rebuilt the engine and automatic transmission in a 2000 Dodge Neon I had) and at times I enjoyed it while at others it was the bane of my existence lol. I would highly recommend that people take a hands on, DIY approach to car maintenance, it builds character, garners appreciation, and expands your understanding of all things mechanical. Not only that, but you save a boat load of cash. I've replaced more head gaskets than I can count, and those will run you a minimum of $1000 at a shop, where as the parts only total to about $100, generally speaking. At times I miss working on cars (as of now, I'm driving my first brand new car...nothing to fix, and it better stay that way for years lol) so it's kinda nice to get the experience of actually doing it without all the effort. :) Great videos, coming from a fellow gear head!

Instead of using the two zip ties, which I didn't have with me, I was able to use what is called the EC3 connector that I had from an RC Hobby store. I cut in in half, and the little tube, hard plastic, fit perfectly.

Thank you for another great video. My 2003 Excursion needed this done this week. Simple job and if you reconnect the loop first it is really easy as there is no load on the cable. The trade off is that you then have to put a little effort into screwing in the new piece. I thought it worth the trade off so I pass it on to the next person that needs to do this. Part was in stock at local auto parts store.

A better fix for this problem, drive a manual.
A good fix for not rolling backwards on hills when going forward from a stop is to drive an auto
+mr me lol i guess your first tome or two trying you do. But when you're an experienced driver, even slightly, you can launch a manual car wothout rolling or burning out.
I wasn't even looking to adjust the gearshift indicator, I needed to fix my shift linkage which you talked about during your glue drying. I want to thank you so much you save me a couple hundred dollars taking it to the shop when I did it myself it was missing one of the bolts

Geat video quality and advice about the two shifter screws.
Don't know exactly why, but when I unhooked the loop and let go of it it went up into the black cable covering - I had to get another indicator! I suggest using a small zip it through the loop when you unhook it for assurance. Again; Thank you for the video and instructions.
My 98 Ford F150 was nearly identical to the video. Just a few differences in disassembling the dash. I found a replacement shift bracket at Advanced auto for $15. Thank you for the excellent video. Turns out I had a identical break on the bracket.
i literally, just today, purchased a 2002 f 150 that has this issue. And i test drove another one prior to buying mine that also had this issue. I thought perhaps this is normal but thought i had better check with ChrisFix. Now, once again, i'm an expert mechanic after viewing another superb video and will soon fix the problem.
i fixed it! luckily the adjustment bracket wasn't broke and i was able to adjust it perfectly. also checked for the bolts that may run themselves out and they were good.
