You are correct, a drop header slows the steam and provide drier steam to system and can be used to get your 24” risers in low clearance situations.

Mike. I live in an area that has maybe 50 residential steam boilers left over from the old days. and after almost 30 years in the trade it is so much fun for me to watch you continue to do what I started doing many years ago after finding home after home and system after system get hacked to death by techs and companies that didn't know the first thing about steam. I've been on a different side of the trade now for a decade (I'm a Regional Facilities Manager in AK ID MT OR and WA) I really enjoy watching you do your thing, Keep it up, happy to be a subscriber.

Watching you wrestle that beast brought back a lot of memories, non too pleasant. Has a guy get paralyzed by not using straps on a unit that rolled and crushed his legs. Sad story. He admitted to us he rushed. The foreman never really got over it. Both knew better. Safe, slow and steady.

Gonna be honest, I’ve posted negative comments about some of the steam boilers you’ve done in the past. I have a lot of respect for you taking the extra steps to do a “better job”, not that the other ones were “wrong”. Shows that no matter how accomplished you are in the industry you can still thrive to be better instead of being stuck in your ways. I enjoyed the video.

Happy new year. Great install and video! You ask for comments. One thing I like to see is units sitting up on 4" or even 6" cinder blocks. So many basements take on a few inche's of water at times. I understand don't always have clearance for that. As a general contractor I tell all subs that evthing goes up on blocks. I like how u give details on parts and layout plans. Let's go Brandon!! FYI..I typed in Lets and the last two words automatically filled in. I love it.lol

I find the science of the header interesting. The drop header adds inertia to the water/steam separation in the header as the water is already moving down when it hits the header. The water falls to the bottom of the pipe while the drier steam runs along the top. Also that the length of the header isn't important but the larger the pipe diameter, the better to give more separation.

    Gigi knows all.
Drop header will produce drier steam, Dan Holohan references in his explanation of near boiler piping and in several videos by Gordon Schwiezer on his UA-cam channel.
For a practical reference ask your men to watch the video of the steam boiler piped in glass for the outdoor demonstrations about what’s really happening inside a steam boiler.
I’m not sure but it may be a video by one of the boiler manufacturers. It’s on UA-cam so everyone should be able to watch it.

Instead of cutting that 1" after the meter wouldn't it be easier to T off of the pex line going to the filter itself? It would still have been upstream but you might have had the stuff on the truck

Will you be insulating the steam pipes in the basement?
