- Giveaway Details: HIKMicro Pocket Thermal Imaging Camera! Another awesome installation of the @USBoiler SteamMax gas fired steam boiler. Unfortunately this new model is replacing a Burnham Independence IN6 steamer from 2005 that developed multiple holes in the heat exchanger above the water line. To expediate the time and labor involved we are using Viega MegaPress fittings for all the joints and connections, creating a drop-header in the process.

I loved doing boiler work. Made a lot of $$$ and just enjoyed doing them. One of my most memorable was for a carpenter who was working on the same new condo project together. I could see he was having a bad morning because his boiler shit the bed overnight. I asked him if he wanted me to have a look and give him a price and he said OK just to make sure it wasn't something that could be an easy quick fix. It was a crack in a middle section and the boiler was from the 50's so it was done. The system had an electric hot water heater next to it that was at 12 years old or so and not looking to good. I offered him my price with an indirect to replace the hot water heater and he thanked me and said my buddy has been my oil guy and his best man in his wedding 20 years earlier and offered to pay for the have a look. An hour later he came looking for me on the Condo sight and asked if I could do the swap that day because it was wintertime and I said sure, but I'll need to find a helper. THE GOOD PART. I asked a laborer a college student who worked on the job sight for his uncle. Told him I'd pay him $400 for the day and he agreed. We went and picked up all the materials and got to work. The carpenter said he would deal with all the scrap and get rid of the old one so all we had to do was push it to the side and install. The carpenter got 2 other friends to help get the old one out and made plans for what they were going to do with all that scrap $$$. 3 guys didn't take my advice and smashed the old boiler and made a 12-foot circle or rust oil and soot in the middle of the basement floor. We finished in under 7 hours and we were on are way back to the condos to drop off my helper for the day. He asked questions and he was worried I wasn't going to pay him the $400. I paid him $500 and told him I made over triple that for the day. He was just going to college for a basic degree and had no plans for a career, but he finished collage later that year and went into the trade and I would run into him from time to time and he thanked me every time I ran into him at the supply house or around town. PS: His Bestman/Oil guy was $4800 higher than me and we made a killing. Have a Blessed day and keep up the good work.
Love that power mate making life easier
Love the mega press !
Fun watching that full install. Nice job guys. I wasn’t too sure that boiler would fit in that goofy doorway, but never doubt Mike’s plan, it arrived downstairs free of damage. My complements on level pipes and overall neatness. Not a lot of guys know how to use a level or even carry them. The lugs on the power switch are a nice classy move, especially since you use a proper Klein crimper to affix them on the conductors. 👍🏻👍🏻
Bonus, the classic Chronotherm! Those only went into houses with money! Us commoners had a T87 on a heat only sub-base.
As always Mike awesome video
Really nice job.
Hey bro. I just started using the AMRAD dual caps last week. Obviously we all have used the Turbo by AMRAD. But I have been posting the dual caps by AMRAD on a few of my videos. Trane Supply in Elmsford NY sells them. The quality is second to none.
Great video!
That pro press is a home run instead of having to thread and then tighten pipe/fittings I’m sure it’s not cheap but labor you save and just the hassle of using 300 machine worth every penny and looks nicer too
As an HVAC tech in the north, the HIK Micro would be TITS for diagnosing slab leaks and coil leaks on Evaporators, if only... :)
My Phoenix 30 Wood Pellet Boiler weighs 796... That was fun getting in my house. Scary.
That dolly is a lifesaver!
Amrad makers of turbo caps are the best and the new caps thave hard start terminals to protect the compressor from a constant 150mfd
Great videos and good laughs , im a self employed plumber as well . Keep up the great work!!!
Dude is he really putting neutral on switch 😀😂
Your a great teacher and a hell of a fun boss to work with and I would love to have a few Goose cocktails and talk Hvac with ya.. I’m just over the border in Ct about 20 minutes from westchester county
Peters s great kid,,!
Keep working on him 😜
Love your content
Spent more on fittings than the boiler.
very entertaining!
I've never heard Peter talk so much, it's about time
Mikey, I think Peter is finally coming out of his shell! 😇
Look into the escalera staircat. Works way better than the powermate and can be used in tighter spaces. 700lbs capacity.
You gonna be able to charge NY prices in SC? Good luck Pipe Dr!
Can you use the emt bender on copper ?
Was the water heater a 40 gallon tallboy??
hey mike do the mega press joints move i am old school cut threaded pipe because we needed swing joint on steam so the pipe can move with expansion of the pipe please give me your thoughts
Hey buddy! I’m from Bay Area California. Been megapressing/ propressing for almost 10 years. I know we always are bottomed out on our fittings but we were taught in the past few years that it’s good practice to mark the pipe where the hub of the fitting ends. It’s good practice just in case you have to warranty with viega. Just wondering your thoughts, keep piping it up my g
Awesome video, I'll be waiting for my hikmicro....🤣
Hey Mikey want to expand to Maryland/Delaware?
chronotherm stat is vintage....cool. I used to install them.
Mikey I want that damn press tool so bad! We are still doing it the old fashion way lol we have it for copper just need it for black steel and acr
Time savings is huge. But fittings are expensive af
The equalizer has to be piped after the boiler takeoffs and the header stem lines, it should not connect between the boiler steam takeoffs or between the connections to the steam main(s).
When my pressuretrol got flaky about 12 years ago I picked up a NOS vaporstat with the mercury bulb - much better than their crappy microswitch version. Nothing is more reliable then a mercury bulb switch, they just work and as long as you don't break the glass.
You got a boo boo... I laughed my ass off.
Lucky number 8 one good thing about South Carolina there's very few steam boilers and they're industrial not residents
👍
C’mon Mike! I’ve split many a boiler section with a claw hammer and a cold chisel. Give it more ass! All jokes aside, excellent work though fellas.
Is every basement on LI finished?
Mike why did you drop down with your steam header instead of just coming straight across? Great video.
It creates a drier steam that way...I believe
I will use that hikmicro for AC work in the depths of AZ attics 0.0
Job well done, Good job Mike and crew, That pro press is tits and that belt saw is nice too, I've installed boiler before with Plumber and we had to thread every line, cast iron fittings, I was there to do the electric at first, but ended up doing more, circulation pumps and all kinds of stuff, We had to separate the first floor and 2nd and 3rd, the 2nd and 3rd were one boiler, and the 1st was another boiler, they the customer, wanted to divide the floors to turn them into apartments. It turned out well. Good job again.
Other Mike was in my house 2 weeks ago. Had my water heater stopped working. I had good chat with him.
I think the steam coming from the boiler will push the water in the direction of the upwards steam lines of the equalizer once past the steam pipes the pressure drops letting the water flow to the return of the boiler. I would think a pipe at the other end would not really work because the steam is pushing everything towards the steam headers.
the "equalizer" is there to make the "condensate return lines" and "steam supply" pressures be "equal". if the setup is proper steam will not condense into water in the steam supply lines or be so minimal it will micro-flash back into steam on the next flow. if it's done very poorly and/or the steam header allows wet steam out BANG CLANG BANG CLANG(24/7 heating season). steam is a thousand headed beast/serpent and you cannot control or replace all of the poorly maintained/installed/modified junk of the past.
actually you can, gut the whole home and start over, probably best to start from the foundation and build new.
Also mark your propress fitting to make sure it fully in
Mikey Mikey you know red is the 24 v side of transformer for heat n cool white is the heat.well should be in a perfect world, be consistent wiring this way when you have shit show 6 wire your guys already know what to do.
@MikeyPipes use union you save money I wish I could work with you I live in NY I do alot of jobbing and services in NY I can point out alot of flaws especially how you teach Peter Pan and you trainees I'm not a hater I'm a subscriber. Step your game up
I guess the MegaPress fittings are rated for that service, but when you look at the 300# fittings it makes one wonder.... 🙂
Why you doing the thermostat backwards white is w heat.
Red is hot rh
Mikey when are you going to use a Porto-Power to split those boilers ? It will pop them apart so easy.
very true, but if your not carefuling(safety third), the porto-power tools and boiler chunks can fly out as high speed projectiles, harming you or breaking important things!
don't ask how I know! 😬
@@throttlebottle5906 what kind of Porto-Power tools have you used that can make a boiler explode ?
@@lhr1701 when they're old and weak with cracks, even a 1/2 ton spreader can make chunks fly, let alone a 10 tons ram and offset feet. plus it can separate the heavy sections violently if any air is trapped in the cylinder/hose.
most people are not aware of that and that they need to keep the hydraulics bled of air!
@@throttlebottle5906 as for air in your hydraulic lines that is on you for not bleeding them properly . And if flying debris is your concern just cover the boiler with a heavy blanket or two .
@@lhr1701 you have to think about many viewers/comment readers are not skilled in hydraulics/air(pressurized fluid/gasses) and the outcome of them.
then again, it's kind of on them for not researching/learning enough before jumping in head first all gung-ho, nor having general skills/knowledge to not harm themselves. or being a tough SOB and getting shocked, smashed, maimed and self torn up as a kid.
that's mostly how I learned and by looking at previous work as examples(which was often done so poorly I was like what is that cruft? fiddling with and repairing electronics as a kid(maybe 8?), sweating copper plumbing by 14?(nobody showed or watched me directly) I set a torch on top a water heater in low basement, aimed directly onto the floor joist. whoops, had my all thumbs uncle helping(brute force moving tanks around) he seen it and moved torch/threw water on it.
unsupervised as kid? no, far too smart for my britches = YES! and I did learn a ton from watching PBS TV stations and paying attention to everyone else around me.
Steam leaks/ bad steam traps that leak by steam will cause the system to constantly need to add water. The system probably has bad steam traps which caused a small corrosion leak in the heat exchanger and then that small steam leak in the boiler compounded the amount of fresh water the system needed thus speeding up the corrosion process.
Depends if it one or two pipe steam.
at 35:30, stranded wire on switch/device screws. when you strip the wire, strip it from a little further up and don't fully remove the piece of wire coating, that keeps the strand ends together and makes it easier to put on the screw and covers the ends. then wrap electrical tape around the wire and tails or the whole device.
the idea is strands never sneak out and go astray, especially important if you repair/wire live.
You do know why the IR is laggy on the HIK, its not the device is a hint.
Safety glasses for guys please, stay safe.
Hey Mike, you remind me when I was 16 and worked with a Beliceños guy and all the time joking with me about the mamacitas/girls and the guy used to ask me about latinas chicas, Peter was like yeah I want latina chicas
I would love to get that camera I’m always chasing after leaks with a sniffer… 😞
I don’t know what I want more “Latinas Chicas” or that mega press 😂
Mikey how much should I pay for a replacement 3.5 ton AC heat pump trane brand the outside condenser unit & in addict unit.new replace nothing else wrong a fare price Mikey i am in MS
THANKS Mikey
I wish I'd never seen an hand EMT bender, instruments of torture, especially anything over 3/4" 🥵🤯😵
theyre ok...but doing 3/4" rigid conduit with a 1" EMT bender is rough. I've used a hand bender for 1-1/4 too but never on 1" rigid, that would be awful.
tube bending is way easier.
Using a claw Hammer? Where’s the lump hammer?
nutral+mass if there is no mass
How come peter is the only one sweating on that job !
IDK?
You need some Russian babas, one look at those beautiful babas you’ll drooling hard.
10:53 sweet, but that hammer is way too small to get the job done! Use a sledgehammer!
Nice vid mike! And btw it would just be Latinas lmao not latina chicas that is like saying Spanish woman girl😂
the homeowner lady busting some biblical verses, she whooping Mikey and Peter into shape. 🤣 that sent me into a banshee like howling fit.
conduit " bender " ..... HICKEY
Next time check the ph of the water in the boiler and what does it say about the ph in the literature ( read it ).
On the note of a civil war, I think the south would hands down slaughter the North in a second one lmao. We got guns and Florida man
No couplings yiu used copper unions ugh yall not using your head smfh😢
Tell your boy that the snips aren't needed when working on a switch. The switch has self contained strippers. 🤷♂️
@@PipeDoctor 😂🤣😂🤣
I only knew it myself from seeing it on TikTok lol
Watch out Latina can be psychotic😂😂😂
They're moving wh backwards. Man at top stairs should have top. Man at bottom of stairs should have bottom of wh. Somebody will get hurt. They don't know how to move stuff.
the $500K boiler install and that's before labor. just the tools and fittings! LOL 😒
Has your adult employee been with you long? I'm surprised he puts up with the fooling around, it costs time.
most people would happily stand around with a thumb in their bunghole, while making big $$$ and happily fiddle-piddling around was going on.
when I go to work on something, I generally work with the thought of getting the job done and back out the door. for sure not into horseplay and fiddling around, maybe a bit on lunch/breaks. maybe I'm just getting old and cranky? but I tend to raise hell and tear peoples heads off for tomfoolery while actually working.
Dual lips posted pics without makeup. She's a 4.
lmao @ "dual lips" 🤣🤣
Mikey pipes what's ur email.....and question do u like ecoer? From what I gathered the guy who designed the bosch ids designed ecoer...
