  • Giveaway Details: HIKMicro Pocket Thermal Imaging Camera! Another awesome installation of the ‪@USBoiler‬ SteamMax gas fired steam boiler. Unfortunately this new model is replacing a Burnham Independence IN6 steamer from 2005 that developed multiple holes in the heat exchanger above the water line. To expediate the time and labor involved we are using Viega MegaPress fittings for all the joints and connections, creating a drop-header in the process.

    I loved doing boiler work. Made a lot of $$$ and just enjoyed doing them. One of my most memorable was for a carpenter who was working on the same new condo project together. I could see he was having a bad morning because his boiler shit the bed overnight. I asked him if he wanted me to have a look and give him a price and he said OK just to make sure it wasn't something that could be an easy quick fix. It was a crack in a middle section and the boiler was from the 50's so it was done. The system had an electric hot water heater next to it that was at 12 years old or so and not looking to good. I offered him my price with an indirect to replace the hot water heater and he thanked me and said my buddy has been my oil guy and his best man in his wedding 20 years earlier and offered to pay for the have a look. An hour later he came looking for me on the Condo sight and asked if I could do the swap that day because it was wintertime and I said sure, but I'll need to find a helper. THE GOOD PART. I asked a laborer a college student who worked on the job sight for his uncle. Told him I'd pay him $400 for the day and he agreed. We went and picked up all the materials and got to work. The carpenter said he would deal with all the scrap and get rid of the old one so all we had to do was push it to the side and install. The carpenter got 2 other friends to help get the old one out and made plans for what they were going to do with all that scrap $$$. 3 guys didn't take my advice and smashed the old boiler and made a 12-foot circle or rust oil and soot in the middle of the basement floor. We finished in under 7 hours and we were on are way back to the condos to drop off my helper for the day. He asked questions and he was worried I wasn't going to pay him the $400. I paid him $500 and told him I made over triple that for the day. He was just going to college for a basic degree and had no plans for a career, but he finished collage later that year and went into the trade and I would run into him from time to time and he thanked me every time I ran into him at the supply house or around town. PS: His Bestman/Oil guy was $4800 higher than me and we made a killing. Have a Blessed day and keep up the good work.

    Fun watching that full install. Nice job guys. I wasn’t too sure that boiler would fit in that goofy doorway, but never doubt Mike’s plan, it arrived downstairs free of damage. My complements on level pipes and overall neatness. Not a lot of guys know how to use a level or even carry them. The lugs on the power switch are a nice classy move, especially since you use a proper Klein crimper to affix them on the conductors. 👍🏻👍🏻
    Bonus, the classic Chronotherm! Those only went into houses with money! Us commoners had a T87 on a heat only sub-base.

    The equalizer has to be piped after the boiler takeoffs and the header stem lines, it should not connect between the boiler steam takeoffs or between the connections to the steam main(s).
    When my pressuretrol got flaky about 12 years ago I picked up a NOS vaporstat with the mercury bulb - much better than their crappy microswitch version. Nothing is more reliable then a mercury bulb switch, they just work and as long as you don't break the glass.

    Job well done, Good job Mike and crew, That pro press is tits and that belt saw is nice too, I've installed boiler before with Plumber and we had to thread every line, cast iron fittings, I was there to do the electric at first, but ended up doing more, circulation pumps and all kinds of stuff, We had to separate the first floor and 2nd and 3rd, the 2nd and 3rd were one boiler, and the 1st was another boiler, they the customer, wanted to divide the floors to turn them into apartments.It turned out well. Good job again.

    I think the steam coming from the boiler will push the water in the direction of the upwards steam lines of the equalizer once past the steam pipes the pressure drops letting the water flow to the return of the boiler. I would think a pipe at the other end would not really work because the steam is pushing everything towards the steam headers.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 Рік тому

      the "equalizer" is there to make the "condensate return lines" and "steam supply" pressures be "equal". if the setup is proper steam will not condense into water in the steam supply lines or be so minimal it will micro-flash back into steam on the next flow. if it's done very poorly and/or the steam header allows wet steam out BANG CLANG BANG CLANG(24/7 heating season). steam is a thousand headed beast/serpent and you cannot control or replace all of the poorly maintained/installed/modified junk of the past.
      actually you can, gut the whole home and start over, probably best to start from the foundation and build new.

      that's mostly how I learned and by looking at previous work as examples(which was often done so poorly I was like what is that cruft? fiddling with and repairing electronics as a kid(maybe 8?), sweating copper plumbing by 14?(nobody showed or watched me directly) I set a torch on top a water heater in low basement, aimed directly onto the floor joist. whoops, had my all thumbs uncle helping(brute force moving tanks around) he seen it and moved torch/threw water on it.

    Steam leaks/ bad steam traps that leak by steam will cause the system to constantly need to add water. The system probably has bad steam traps which caused a small corrosion leak in the heat exchanger and then that small steam leak in the boiler compounded the amount of fresh water the system needed thus speeding up the corrosion process.

    at 35:30, stranded wire on switch/device screws. when you strip the wire, strip it from a little further up and don't fully remove the piece of wire coating, that keeps the strand ends together and makes it easier to put on the screw and covers the ends. then wrap electrical tape around the wire and tails or the whole device.
    the idea is strands never sneak out and go astray, especially important if you repair/wire live.
