  • Saving Lives! Found steam boiler with a Water heater relief valve installed. This system would have exploded! Facts! If this boiler was left running, it would have exploded. Plain and simple. People would have died. The boiler had a water heater 100XL installed on it INSTEAD of a 15psi relief valve!!!!
    Typical Tuesday & completed 5 service calls. Mostly new heat, but some highlights:
    No Heat on Slant Fin gas boiler with defective Aqaustat relay, Weil Mclain gas steam boiler with Water Heater T&P Relief valve and defective pressuretrole, Estimate for a new furnace, we fixed it instead ending with Danfoss Thermostatic Steam Radiator Valve installation

    Great video! Once again Mikey pipes saved the day! Safety is number one! There's so many times something can go terribly wrong ! That house could have blown up! I remember 35 years ago a large HVAC company that didn't train their technicians well had a technician that mistook a oxygen bottle for an r-22 bottle and blew up a house and he died in that explosion! Safety is number one priority Mikey pipes !

    Mikey Pipes keep up the good work. You showing the relief valve reminded me of what I found and homeowner declined repairs which I documented. They took relief valve off water heater, installed a nipple and reconnected relief valve on tank but with sensing side of valve exposed to ambient surrounding pressures, thus we know that valve would NEVER open when pressures of tank are unsafely reached!

Having said that, I have an R22 🦕 that will need to be replaced soon, at the same time I see the same writing on the wall for 410a with r32 coming out at the end of the year. I am at the tail end of the current refrigerant and if I went into 410a now as my system starts breaking down in 20 years I’ll be paying ridiculous amounts for 410a as I’m currently for r22. Should I hold out and have an eye on the future and wait and move into the latest refrigerant be it R32 or 454b. Thoughts from the renaissance man ?

      @@PipeDoctor I know it’s tough and probably dependent on one’s need. thank god I’m not at these prices. It’s a 12 year old Goodman system. Last year a service port /shrader valve in the line set near the evap backed out and the system dumped its load and froze up. The second company I called found the issue because he went into the attic. The first went through the trouble to pressurize the system with nitrogen but never addressed the leak and just filled it up and never returned my call when that all pissed out. So I’ve lost confidence in it although #2 Service co.addressed and the system ran well except that suction line does not condense or get beer can cold but the temp in the house does drop to 70 degrees and beyond even though I tell the wife not that cold. Just educating myself for that time when it comes.

    Mikey, replaced an Apollo 13-511 on my own steam boiler a number of years back. I just happened to turn it out to add boiler cleaner and saw that it had a tremendous amount of mud in it and therefore would not have worked if the pressuretrol had failed. I replaced it and test it periodically. Your video reminded me of this and plan to replace it once again as a precaution. In your experience, how often do you replace them?

    Single pipe steam heat is dependent on vents in order to heat up the radiator. Have you ever used a thermostatic controlled vent valve? I’m not understanding how the TRV is going to help since the condensate has to go down the same valve shouldn’t partially closed it will block the condensate from leaving the radiator.

    Wow, so there was 3 problems, the wrong valve installed the pressure troll not working but the pressure gauge should of told you also of the Pressure. There is a question on the NJ test that asks where do you find a relief valve, a lot of people get it wrong because its a boiler test. the answer is on a hot water heater. a safety valve is what's installed on a steam boiler and a relief valve is on a hot water heater.

  • @BrianDoesStuff873
    @BrianDoesStuff873 2 роки тому

    somebody installed that 150psi relief valve because the old valve leaked and they did not understand that the reason it was leaking is because it had too much pressure without the proper understanding of it is not the same pressure rating as the hot water heater, they should have known the other part was faulty , most likely somebody was working on something they knew nothing about, Saint Mike just saved somebody big time.

    In the immortal words of AvE, "Never f**k with a pressure vessel." I had a boiler today with a fresh inspection sticker and the impurities in the system had a little water in them. The government has too many boilers, chillers, furnaces, ACs, and cooling towers and not enough maintenance staff. I cover over 150 offices. It's always bad, and like herding cats.

      Here in Maine you can buy them at any hardware store. They' just have a square hole in them the same size as the stem on the vent.

    I’m just curious, it looks like everyone you go to uses a boiler for heating and also have an ac unit. Why don’t they just use heat pumps? Is it because the houses are just older or because of price?
