I have a 2015 X5 xDrive50i with executive package with soft close doors and all safety options. Drives absolutely AMAZING. Extremely soft and when you put it into sports mode its a beast. My MSRP was around $90,000. I got it for $29,000 with only 40k miles clean title. I bought it 14 months ago which was before the big spike in used car prices. I've never had a single issue with it!
Not sure all would agree. dynamic handling package or M adaptive suspension (especially) are both fantastic options. Air springs cost under 200 a piece, and a new compressor like 500 (IF you ignored leaking air springs and let the compressor burn itself out). But for 99% of people, a couple new air springs is all you need. But even the standard suspension isn't bad at all

A buddy of mine is a service manger for BMW and he has some very interesting stories to tell about these twin turbo V8’s. I recently saw an X5 xDrive50i for sale at a dealer in Texas, gave my buddy the VIN and he said the customer was advised by BMW the vehicle needed an engine replacement due to smoking issues. Customer declined and now the car is for sale at a third party dealer.
Yeah I would love to own one but I honestly don't feel that I can afford to both buy an extended warranty for it and then keep up with repairs and maintenance after the warranty has expired. That plus the inconvenience of having in the shop often could make ownership difficult if it's your only car.

Smart advice. I just picked up a lightly used X5 M under warranty. Just over half MSRP. Very similar. The most amazing part of the video however is the houses out the driver's window. Strangely similar for about a block or two. Pleasantville??
My husband just bought me one of these; it's my first BMW. I love the car, but I'm not thrilled with its value right now compared to it's original price. I plan on keeping it for a while, but expected it to hold its value a bit better. Though I'm sure there's something related to the current economy. Nevertheless, it's a blast to drive and the gas mileage is much better than I expected for a V8.
It’s market value drops rapidly due it’s legendary reputation for very poor long term reliability & very high maintenance costs with age & miles. They’re known to suffer oil leaks that are expensive to repair, turbo failures & many, many, many electronic system challenges. Porsche & Audi SUVs are in the same boat. BMW, Porsche & Audi do not build vehicles to hold up well for more than 3 years &/or 100 k+ miles, even if they’ve been well maintained. The very best BMWs are brand new & leased for 3 years & sold after the lease.
@@adelvecchio1029, stick to a rigid maintenance schedule as per the owner’s manual & that’ll help you stay ahead of many issues before they become major.
Scheduled Maintenance is actually quite reasonable on these in terms of the amount of how frequently it needs attention. However, the cost will be high for certain items. Even just tires on these V8 M-Sport models are really price, as they have 315-series rear tires and pads and rotors are not cheap. The real issue with these is unscheduled repairs. From leaking valve cover gaskets to cooling system issues and regularly failing alternators, it can get scary without a warranty. Some have reported relatively trouble-free ownerships, but my experience working at a BMW dealership would suggest otherwise. I've seen some major stuff happen.
All recent BMW's with the M Sport package come with the "M Sport" steering wheel. It has an M badge on the wheel. If yours doesn't have that package, even if it is a 50i, it won't have that badge.
@@TheZListCars thanks for the reply. However, I am more confused. The exterior of the x5 has no other M markings only the steering wheel. I believe that the steering wheel might have been replaced. If it had the M package it should have external markings and it doesn’t.
@@kenmcdonaldii3887 M Sport cars are designated by the wheels, the shadowline trim, and the different bodywork (mainly bumpers). Not all of them have M badging. M is not in the name of the X5 xDrive50i. Now the newer BMW's are a different story. A base X3 is just an xDrive30i with a 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The 6-cylinder turbo version is called the X3 M40i. It's an "M Performance Car", a la M235i, M240i, X5 M50i, M340i. Those "M Performance" bridge the gap between the base engines and the full-on M model. However, in this F15 generation of X5, the xDrive50i was not considered an "M Performance" Car. It simply had the larger engine, and could be had with an M Sport package, which did NOT designate exterior M badging. Trust me on this - I worked at a BMW dealership for years. I can assure you the steering wheel was not swapped. If it was from an X5 M it would have M-colored stitching on the steering wheel. This has a factory steering wheel. Hopefully this all makes sense. Sorry for the long response.
How is longevity of this vehicle? 2017’s were post all the oil issues of their predecessors. Some people say the turbos in the valley are an issue but even Mercedes have the same set up on some vehicles from what I understand. Please enlighten me
To my knowledge, the later N63's were better than the earlier ones, but still likely going to have some cooling system issues at some point (like all BMWs) and other typical stuff like leaky Valve Cover gaskets that will need replacing. Overall, definitely safer than a 2012 or so V8 BMW with the "50i" designation, but still a V8 BMW, ya know, so it will need some attention here and there. There seems to be some higher (100+k) mileage ones out there for sale, so hopefully they really are capable of good longevity. Googling what years qualified for the "Customer Care Campaign" might shed some light on the worst years for this motor.
Can someone please try and explain why on all these videos these days people try and record the exhaust sound right at the exhaust?? I don't understand the trend. It sounds terrible! You're audio devices can't capture the sound that close.... Never worked once.
With a close look at maintenance history and a solid PPI, yes it would. They are way better than their reputation, but still have some funds set aside for maintenance and service.
You're close to correct...except that they never made a GLE550. They made an ML550 until 2014, then it became the ML400 with the 3.0 biturbo V6, and then in 2016 when the ML turned into the GLE, the engine choice between the 350 and the 63 AMG became the 43 AMG with the twin turbo V6. But yes, overall you're correct that the X5 xDrive50i is not a true '63 AMG competitor. The point of my video is that, especially with a tune, it comes awfully close value-wise to the X5 M and its competitors.
Thanks. I just bought one! I had a kid and haven't had the time to make videos in over a year, but within the next couple of weeks a full review on my 2017 X5 xDrive50i M-Sport in Alpine White with Mocha Interior Design package should be uploaded!
I bought one like that but had to take back because the transmission was bad. I’m buying another one now but 50i. Was that an OEM digital instrument cluster or is it factory? I would like to upgrade if it’s not expensive.
@@isweatglitter5809 it came like this which was a nice upgrade over my 2013 E70 3.0 Funny how in Canada we get the digital cluster on the F15 X5 but not the LED foglights.
If you buy any BMW with this N63 engine that's 2014 or later and/or has had the "customer care campaign" performed at a BMW dealer in the past, it probably won't be too bad until you start hitting 150k miles or higher. But no guarantees, some of these earlier ones could have issues at lower mileage than that.
I don't always support the purchase of extended service contracts, but on one of these I would. I work at a dealership that sells these, and warranties are more expensive on the V8s, so that doesn't seem like a bad price. Just make sure it covers the high labor rates, like $150/ hour.

New X5 with b58 is more like 400hp b58 i6 is underrated. But f15 X5 35i with N55 is around 350-360hp, it’s not 300hp. It can do 0-60 5.8-6s which no way a 5000lbs suv can do with only 300hp.
What I try to explain in this review is that the xdrive50i trim gets CLOSE to that arena of performance (X5 M, GLE63, Supercharged RR). My point is that it offers a lot of value, considering the acceleration, power, creature comforts, etc. as a cheaper alternative to the range-topping M's and AMG'S. I'm quite aware that the real X5 M is the direct competitor to GLE63, etc. and that this is more of a direct comparison to a GLE43 or ML550. Thank you for watching.
$86,000 is misleading..... nothing comes out of a BMW dealer at MSRP.... $86,000 is the plain bare bone with nothing fancy on it... it's like the poverty version.... for BMW, any thing you want, you have to pay extra.. mine was $115,000 out the door....
The best actually. I drive approximately 45,000 miles per year. I have a 2017 fully loaded 50i and it has around 295,000 miles. Still fast as hell, shifts smooth, and I’ve had ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES WITH THE MOTOR AT ALL! My mother actually has the same 2017 car but the 40e variant. Just crested 159,000 miles and no issues. Both of our BMWs have BOOTMOD3 STAGE 1 engine tunes, and my 50i has a Stage 2 XHP transmission tune. Both X5s are maintained by me! Driving both cars onto ramps, in my driveway, and doing oil changes, trans fluid changes, etc. Main rule of thumb is, if you take care of your car, it’ll take care of you. Also, if you go onto a place called emanual online, that’s where I got my service manuals from for both cars. We are all human, and even though some of us may not be mechanically inclined, just remember that your grandparents were under their cars with a jack and jack stands changing the oil in their 68 chargers. It’s not much different from those cars to modern cars. The only difference would be resetting the oil life. That’s IT! Automakers want it to seem more difficult than it really is by adding plastic and covers over service areas. Not to mention all the wires in modern car engine bays. But if you really think about it, there’s still oil, a filter, a fill hole and a drain bolt.
Great informative video The updated N63 TU(technical update) has addressed the big heat issue with the 4.4 over the years. I owned a 2011 50i for 6 years, best car I ever owned. Had no engine issue although it did get some of the CCP done. One thing I will say about German cars is you must stick to the proper maintenance schedule. Change the oil every 3-5k and you will have fewer issues.I plan on getting another soon.

@@TheZListCars looks quite lovely actually. Motor on.
@@Sophos1964 Thanks for the insight!
@@adelvecchio1029, stick to a rigid maintenance schedule as per the owner’s manual & that’ll help you stay ahead of many issues before they become major.
@@Sophos1964 I have been! We’re usually pretty good about that but upped it a few notches with this car!
@@adelvecchio1029 , great! They’re beautiful & comfortable SUVs.

What’s maintenance like on one of these? Id love one but the thought of maintaining a v8 BMW is terrifying
@@TheZListCarswell of course, you’re not going to see the N63tu’s that are trouble free lol!
Why is there an M badge on the steering wheel? I didn’t notice any M badges on the exterior. Great car, I have the same but mine is a 2018…
All recent BMW's with the M Sport package come with the "M Sport" steering wheel.
@@kenmcdonaldii3887 did you not read his last response? M badge on wheels, steering wheels, and door sills
Cant think of any reason to pass on one of these unless I can get my hands on a M50i.

Very nice review , Thank you for the info.
Hot v8 turbos in the V they burn up!
Great video , thanks 🏴
Absolutely love mine.
They are quite enjoyable! I still want one lol
Hey Matt, did BMW correct the plastic issues on engine parts/components, seals and gaskets between v engines on the 2017 X5 50i?
Nope.... coolant y pipe... plastic, oil separator.... plastic, valve stem seals........
I still bought it
Love my X5.
Can someone please try and explain why on all these videos these days people try and record the exhaust sound right at the exhaust?? I don't understand the trend. It sounds terrible! You're audio devices can't capture the sound that close.... Never worked once.
If there is a back seat recline which is perfect suv for family.
Would a 2014 x50i with 84K miles be worth looking at?
With a close look at maintenance history and a solid PPI, yes it would. They are way better than their reputation, but still have some funds set aside for maintenance and service.
Mercedes GLE550 is the Benz comparison. The amg stuff is equivalent to the ///M stuff.
At 13:30 engine is running and you have engine chek light on... only 20 000 miles????? Problems?
I think it ended up being an EVAP-related code. Something very small that stayed off once we cleared it.

My 17 X5 35i M sport has a digital instrument cluster
I bought one like that but had to take back because the transmission was bad. I’m buying another one now but 50i. Was that an OEM digital instrument cluster or is it factory? I would like to upgrade if it’s not expensive.
@@isweatglitter5809 it came like this which was a nice upgrade over my 2013 E70 3.0 Funny how in Canada we get the digital cluster on the F15 X5 but not the LED foglights.
Are these reliable at high mileage?
Unfortunately, not really :(
@@TheZListCars I appreciate your honesty. I was thinking about buying one, but not looking for a money pit once it gets up there in mileage.
@@TheZListCars Is 90,000 miles high mileage?
If you buy any BMW with this N63 engine that's 2014 or later and/or has had the "customer care campaign" performed at a BMW dealer in the past, it probably won't be too bad until you start hitting 150k miles or higher. But no guarantees, some of these earlier ones could have issues at lower mileage than that.
Reliable ?????😂😂😂😂😂
It already have check engine light.
I’m looking at one these and I can get an extended warranty 5 years or 100k mills for about 4K would you recommend it?
I don't always support the purchase of extended service contracts, but on one of these I would. I work at a dealership that sells these, and warranties are more expensive on the V8s, so that doesn't seem like a bad price. Just make sure it covers the high labor rates, like $150/ hour.

The 35i is only 300 horsepower factory but if you buy one used the owner before May have tuned it to easily get 400 horsepower.

No, you're very wrong.
This does NOT compete witg a GLE63 AMG the X5M competes with the AMG.
What year 50i’s had all the issues? Was it the 2010-2014?
$86,000 is misleading..... nothing comes out of a BMW dealer at MSRP.... $86,000 is the plain bare bone with nothing fancy on it... it's like the poverty version.... for BMW, any thing you want, you have to pay extra.. mine was $115,000 out the door....

Garbage “Hot V” Riddled with problems 😂
Prob worst engine you can possibly buy

X5 is actually the most reliable bmw car. My friend had a 6 series and a lot of problems, switched to x5 no problem at all.
