Had my 2012 550 since new. BMW recommended oil changes every 15,000 miles or 21,000 kms. No surprise they caused every N63 engine to fail. I thought they were nuts so just changed my oil every 5000 miles. Engine is fine after 12 years.
George - Great decision! That interval is insane from BMW..
Honestly thanks for the pointers, I’m not sure why I wait for the recommended time to change my oil even tho I can feel my car crying for more after a few months.. 2012 750li and it’s been running great since I’ve has it, got it around 140,000 miles I’m at 163 in about 2 years so so it’s held up pretty well for the long distance travels I go on. Definitely not as fast since when I got it tho the bags are really old the electronic damping doesn’t work and there’s a drivetrain malfunction that doesn’t allow me to go into comfort sport or sport plus, other than that engine is fine
@@ggepolobro, how are you ok, with driving on "drive train malfunction" it means you are not getting more than 30% power
@@Scalykams holy shit, my X5 can barely make it up a shallow incline when the drivetrain malfunction hits.
I know it is easy to blame it on infrequent oil change intervals, but let's be honest here...
most of the failures talked about here WILL HAPPEN even if you change your oil changed every 500 miles.
(1) Piezo Injector and high pressure fuel pump -- not even in the oil circuit.
(2) Shit over heating in the V and things going bad... well, dirtyoil or clean oil, they'll go bad.
(3) Timing Chain skipping due to a bad follower... well, maybe, but it is also possible that the follower just breaks.
(4) Oil consumption -- the engine has a low low indicator, so you should be good as long as you top off.
Our 2015 550i has been in the family since new and has only needed coolant lines and HPFPs throughout our ownership from 20K miles to around 130K now
Xellium - Sounds like you've got a good one! Thanks for sharing your experience.
supposedly after 2014 and up they did some reliability mods to the N63. I had a 2012 550i xdrive and the engine started having a lot of oil issues at around 70k miles. The valve stem seals go bad and oil seeps through and into the combustion chamber. BMW fixed this for free but by then I was ready to sell it after I replaced the boost solenoids that went bad and coolant lines.
Viper - Thanks for sharing this insight and your experience!
EXCELLENT evaluation! Thank you!!
Quirk - Thanks for the feedback. We hope it helps!
The heat is what was killing the valve seals...4k oil change is a must...
Jermaine - Absolutely agree with this!
Absolutely but typically just go with the n63 TU technical update and avoid BMW’s with the original N63 if buying use. Even with shorting the oil change intervals they have other costly fixes like the injectors, timing, valve guide seals and etc that need to be done to
The best motor BMW made and my favorite to work on was the straight inline 6 bmw m54 engine. Use to be a BMW master technician.
Very reliable information from you am very excited and happy indeed please provide some details on the 2013/2014 seven series thanks O'Brien
O'Brien - Thanks for the feedback!
2014 N63TU here. 83,000km no issues except one oil line replacement. Keep mine regularly serviced and change oil. These are amazing engines IMO as a long-term owner. Service it correctly and you should be good.
What problems could I expect from buying one with higher miles? It’s listed at 87k MILES not sure what that would be in KM but well over 120.

It is the fastest car I’ve ever driven, 3500 rpm to redline feels like getting boosted out of slingshot.
Replaced the water pump , injectors , oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gasket , walnut blasted the intake valves , clutch , and turbos ,
after you replace all that it’s actually a relatively reliable car !!! 🤣
D - Couldn't agree more! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.
Nobody asked.
GW - Nobody has to ask. It's called decency to inform future viewers.
awesome video, you should do a video on some of the older engines like the m50 or s50!
Lolman - Thanks for the feedback. We will add it to the list!
Any N63 I'd buy will be accompanied by a lengthy warranty. That said the M550i is a beast in a tailored suit.
Absolutely agree!
1st gen n63 here. Actually I’m having valve stem seal and timing chain fixed right now. For me it’s a very powerful engine although it has its downside. Issue began at 110k miles so it hasn’t been that bad at all. Also some hoses here and there (considering this engine has so much of them and T connectors are plastic). It’s a popular engine so my advice is to make your research prior getting a N63 ride.
Great vid man. Big shoutout
F - Thanks for sharing your experience and feedback! Hope it helped.
In the market for a 2022 Alpina B7. I know they have the N63, but I also know Alpina has done a lot of internals work, added intercoolers, and done a lot of work to the block. I was wondering if u had any info on reliability issues or exactly what was changed/tuned by Alpina. Thanks!
James - The Alpina versions are certainly more stout. Given you are looking at a 2022, we don't have mucch to say, yet. In past models, ALPINA had many internal upgrades. Keep us updated.
@@8020Media Thanks! And I definitely will!
My 2011 550i with the non-tu engine just rolled past 96k miles. Only ever replaced leaking plastic coolant lines for 600 dollars. Nothing else
Akash - Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like you've got a good one.
Hello Zack. I’ve got a 2013 Alpina B7 with a N63T update. The engine was produced in December of 2012 but the car is a 2013 model with the latest face lift and headlights led upgrades. I have not had any problems, I’ve had it since 2018 and it was at 60,000klm. Now I’m sitting at 80,000 klm. There was a recall where bmw replaced some fuel injectors but that was it. My question is, is this engine built more stronger and more reliable then the 750”s. Ive learned that Alpina changed the pistons and had bigger intercoolers. Is there anything you could tell me about the difference between Alpina B7 and a regular 750 and what the reliability rate is. Thanks!!
I'm not sure of all the exact specs and components that Alpina changed, but I believe the pistons, intercooler, turbochargers, and cylinder heads are all different. Ultimately, it's built to handle the added stresses, pressures, and heat from the more powerful design. However, a majority of the "standard" BMW and N63 issues - like the cooling system and oil leaks - are likely just as common on the Alpina B7.
As Always- the Best Motors from BMW are the In Line 6 Cylinder!
M54 is my favorite and the B58 from the New Era vehicles!
Tian - They are great engines.
I saw on another channel that the N63 after 2018 is the way to go. What can you tell me about 2020 - 2021 X5 M50i ?? Buy or go with a 6 cyl X5 ? Thanks in advance!
D - We can't tell you what to choose because we don't know your budget, needs, or wants. We know what we would do, but don't like giving out recommendations for purchasing a vehicle.
B58 on X5 is more than what you would need. N63 on the sedans makes them feeling like sport cars. But an SUV will never feel like a sport car.
I’m at 82k miles on 2008 135i N54. Stage 1+ Cobb tune+intercooler since 40k mikes. Aside from plugs and fluids, the car was flawless since purchase.
This year, at 80k, is the first time I’m spending money on it. I had water pump/thermostat/leaking oil filter housing replaced/oil change/alignment done at indy BMW garage for 2100$. Right now it’s in shop for all coils/plugs/walnut blast and that’s 1500. Got cylinder 4 misfire and service engine light last week.
Aside from the leaky oil filter housing, these are basically expected costs at 80k miles. Water pump, plugs, coils, these are wear and tear. It is what it is. This is my 5th BMW, and none of them have given me crazy unexpected problems except stupid SMG on an E46 M3. I should have known better.
There definitely is a price difference to account for. I would be paying 25% less or so if I was driving a Corvette. Is it worth it? That’s up to you. For me, the enjoyment I get out of daily use of a BMW it is worth it. I love these cars.
Just know what you are getting into. In my experience, nothing breaks that isn’t supposed to. Reliability is fine. But the maintenance costs more than a domestic, and if you skip it the car will leave you stranded. They are performance cars pushing the edge of pump gas with many advanced technologies in the engine. You cannot abuse it like a Toyota Corolla. It’s a BMW and has to be maintained like a BMW.
Morty - We really appreciate you taking the time to type out your experience and this insight. It will certainly help future viewers!
Another BMW upload 🎉 Lets go 👏🏽
Bass - Thanks for the continued support! We have your requested video in the queue.
Hey Zack, I have a fairly pristine 2012 750i with the same engine from Hell your talking about on this vid. Same problems and all locked up. I acquired the car for a dance and am really thinking about a LS swap for it. What is your thoughts on that? Is it worth it or would it be a money pit? Thanx for your videos. You Rock.... Bob Tyler.
I've seen some LS swaps on the older E38 7-series but nothing for your F01. My guess is there aren't any pre existing kits out there for it which will probably make it quite expensive and ultimately more expensive than it would be worth. At that point I would rather try to swap an S63 into it but really depends on your budget, power levels you're looking for an so forth. A 750 is so heavy it's not really an ideal candidate for a crazy build and also doesn't quite have the same aftermarket support.
i have owned a bmw 335is 2011 with n54 engine and i tuned it with full bolts on reaching approximately 420 WHP dyno dynamics and to be honest i did not face any trouble with the engine (except the fuel injection which i have to upgrade because it was failing the tune up). the car lasted with my until 2020 with the same modification. it was a really good reliable car for a sport design cars.
Ahmad - Thanks for sharing your feedback! Sounds like you have a good one.
Gotta go index 12s
I was looking at the 2022 M550i and even test drove one, I was impressed. But then, as I did, my research problems with the motors became apparent. The oil problems they’re overheating. It was too much to have to deal with and pay 80 to $90,000. For that car. The engine is the heart soul of any car if the engine is bad or problematic, your best served to stay away from it. I chose a different car. I think I made the right decision..
Dwight - What did you end up going with?
You missed out those engines at this point are way better than before and you have 3-4 years warranty with bmw
Ed - Good point.
@@eduardlast233-4 years warranty is no guarantee these engines start to break down after driving 70k miles.I know because I have an n63tu myself. I have replaced the engine with a new one.the engine died after driving 79k miles
All cars need modifications. The N63 M550 probably needs a good oil cooler and then it will be fine.
Just got mine as a gift. 2015 550i sitting at 205k miles. Engine and transmission feels solid as far as i can tell. I do think i need new engine mounts though.
205k miles is pretty impressive for an N63!
Is it possible to take a 2012 650i to bmw itself to get the technical updates ?
If you're asking if you can make your N63 something like a N62TU2, the answer is no. It isn't just software updates but changes to the actual motor itself
A - No. Technical updates are completely different engines. Gere's a link that will break this down more: bmwtuning.co/bmw-n63-vs-n63tu-vs-n63tu2-vs-n63tu3/
Fuel pump and fuel line went on my 750i g11 (2016 model) at 26k miles
Billy - So sorry to hear this.. Thanks for sharing your experience!
So when did "iteration" become a synonym for version?
"Version" typically refers to a specific release or variant of a product, software, or creative work. It indicates a distinct stage or edition that incorporates changes, updates, or improvements over previous versions. For example, you might have Version 1.0, Version 2.0, and so on.
On the other hand, "iteration" refers to the repetition or successive refinement of a process, design, or idea. It involves making incremental changes or adjustments to improve upon previous versions. Iteration often involves feedback, evaluation, and small modifications aimed at achieving a desired outcome. It is commonly used in software development and other creative fields.
I dunno Tom, I'll have to ask my high school english teacher. What I do know is who tf cares.
I have a 2012 750Li xDrive. Bought at 90k miles. At 108k now. 2 quarts every month every other month. Replaced cooling / turbo lines, catless down pipes and intake. 0-60 3.5 . Hellcat, mustang And camero killer is what i call her. Hit 130 plus routinely and otherwise. It is a beast of a machine. I use fuel additives at every fill up and use 93 strictly
U - Sounds like you've got a good one. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Woa!!!
I need some help guys there is a 2012 x6 50i with 33k Miles what do you think is it gonna be reliable? Or unreliable even with low mileage?
Semba - We don't recommend making a purchase. However, most engines, depending on how they have been maintained, are good around 33k miles.
Honestly I was torn between getting an M550i because of the engine. My second choice is the M440i and I think I’m going with that just because B58 has gotten better reviews
A - Both can be great, but in our opinion the B58 will be more reliable. The fact that Toyota is using it says a lot.
Please get the warranty it helps saves big time my 550i had less than 31,000 miles and blew a transfer case. Thank God for the warranty or else I would have to pay close to $5,000 everything is plastic beautiful engine twin turbo cannot complain and I never dogged out the car either for this to happen after everything is well maintained and never change your oil every 10,000 miles do it at 5,000 if not 4,000 my warranty covers me three oil changes a year and bumper to bumper it's Worth every penny!!
Eriv - Couldn't agree more! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and insights.
My 2012 N63 E70 had a complete engine failure at 104,000. Expensive lesson learned. No more BMW unless its under warrantee!!
Adam - So sorry to hear this... Do you happen to know the culprit?
@@8020MediaNah, I would have had to pay to have them tear apart the engine. I think it was the timing chain. I wasn't going to drop $20k on a new motor, as painful as it was to salvage her.
That stinks. Sorry Adam. Hope you have better luck on your next vehicle.
I just bought a 2012 with 106k. Now I'm scared
@@jasonjacobs2019 The car was amazing.....until it wasn't. knowing what I know now I would sell it and move on. Unless you work on it yourself. A new engine is around $20k and that is pretty much the most expensive thing that can go wrong. If you are OK with that then enjoy. If not...run! :)
Does new generations of these engines suffer from major issues? Something like m850i?
M - Hard to tell as of now. Not many have been tested. However, the newer the generation, the higher the likelihood that past problems have been addressed.
Oh my! I was considering a 2012 550i but this is terrifying
Long - Our goal with these videos is not to scare, it is to strictly inform. N63's can certainly be reliable, just need to take great care of them!
Is it the black one from Texas on eBay?

dont get it. I had a 2012 550i xdrive. car was super nice, but the oil consumption due to valve stem seals will cause a nightmare.
Viper - Thanks for sharing your experience!
Would love to see a S63 engine review and comparison as well!
Anything for you Bass! We'll get it on the list.
Keep an eye out on October 26th!
my 650i had about 70.000 km (43.500 miles), when the standard timing chain guide issue appeared which also caused the injectors to be affected. The quoted me with € 15.000 for repair on the engine, but stated very clear: they couldn't guarantee it would be all okay after the repair. I could also get a new engine for € 17.000, but they stated that a new engine would still be prone to the same issue after time. I love V8's, but I won't touch one from BMW with a 10 foot pole after this experience.
Very curious what is included in the 15,000 of repairs. That seems pretty aggressive as does the cost for a new engine....suppose if the quote was from the dealership then I would believe it. But you can buy a built N63 with upgraded bearings, forged internals, etc. for probably like 10-12,000 Euros.
@@8020Media it was a quote from my local BMW dealer. The repair was including the timing chain guides, the injectors and maybe a few other things they wanted to upgrade while the engine was out and open. It was including labour and tax.
I ended up trading in the car for a G29-M40i. But there were several dealers I asked if they wanted to trade in the F12-650i, but most declined outright. (even though the car was exceptionally equipped and in immaculate condition, were it not for the engine.)
Freud - Ah, that makes sense. Well, thanks for sharing your experience and sorry to hear about it. This will certainly help future viewers. Hope the M40i treats you better!
@@8020Media the B58 engine is way more reliable and much more efficient (and with € 2 per liter fuel, that is quite handy too)
So listening to this i think its safe to buy 2014 f10 550i
A - So long as the maintenance records look good and you keep up with maintenance after ownership!
Bought my 2008 750li in 2010 with 80k miles. 164k now with no major engine issues. Oil changed 4-5k. Original battery finally giving out now 9/23. Got my monies worth on this one.

@@topnews1007 Take those bad vibes somewhere else your failures don’t gotta be someone elses
Valve stem seals? How does a company mess this is in 2015?
Fred - yep....
Do oil change every 3k miles, tune up when needed and top with oil when needed. Also check motor and make sure nothing is melting lol
Brian - We absolutely agree!
2-3k in labor for a car with an orginal msrp of 90-130k i have a 2015 750li at 73k miles and labor costs for the amount of car honestly isnt that bad i am not a rich guy but prices are not to bad but i highly rec changing oil with 5w40 every 2500-3000 miles might sound excessive but i drive extremely spirited
B - Thanks for sharing your experience and insight!
1qt of oil every 1k miles is garbage. That oil has to go somewhere. The valve seals going bad is another engine out $4k job and coils going bad is another issue. The big issue that is disastrous if you're keeping the car long term is the plastic coolant lines that disintegrate after hot/cool cycles and will lead to engine failure. BMW charges hundreds of dollars for parts that are injection molded for a few bucks and instead of using rubber hoses the plastic lines and connectors is something that is made to fail on purpose with BMW not caring about the car owner. This is why most of the cars they have in the US are leased and why they lose their value and cost less than a used Accord/Camry after 3-4 years.
Paul - Completely agree. Thanks for taking the time to add this insight!
All you have to do is be on top of maintenance change oil every 3k miles and the most important don’t buy a used one wit 70k plus miles
Rico - Some excellent advise there! We agree.
comments on S63?
G - This video is all about the S63: ua-cam.com/video/njnQcPXYGkU/v-deo.html
Wasnt the N62 2008-2012? Not the N63?
There was some overlap between N62 and N63 production. The BMW N62 was largely phased out after 2010 with the N63 becoming the primary engine in 2011. However, the N63 was released in models like the X6 and 750i a couple years prior to that.

Idle: yes, still true.

Wrap the manifolds and get a better oil cooler
Living - Thanks for the insight.
The n63 does not even have a dip stick to even check the oil .. 🤬 u have to rely on sensors & the front display on dash to check the engine oil level
A dipstick would be a nice back-up option. However, the N63 isn't alone in the lack of a dipstick as this is common practice on just about every modern BMW engine. The N54, N55, N20, B48, B58, etc. do not have a dipstick either. Fortunately, the computer and sensors are very accurate and rarely run into any problems.

@8020Media I'm daily driving, put I plan to install a M sport body kit and wrap it in satin dark grey with 21 inch rims, and drop it with coilovers, and a straight pipe but I'm worried about all these overheating problems
D - So the only performance mod is a straight pipe, then you shouldn't need to add any aftermarket cooling components.

Seems like 2018+ is the way to go.

N63 CCP - customer care package service bulletins.. avail in all countries it’s been exported too ??
If not ? Why not ?
The Customer Care Package was made by BMW North America. I'm not entirely sure if similar CCP's were made available in other countries. As to why, the CCP was not a mandatory campaign or recall so BMW didn't have to offer it and it was instead just a "goodwill" offering.

If you do, change oil frequently and use Liquimoly products, both oil and additives. Change plugs and coils every 20-30k miles. I did all these things and mine still failed sooo…. Get an Audi or something. 🤷🏻♀️
Gretchen - Sorry to hear about this. However, thank you for sharing your experience!
Lol don’t dare compare the n54 to the pre TU n63. They’re not even in the same ballpark
M - As in reliability?
So from mid 2012 and up they fix the problems
Not entirely.
Placing twin turbos on top of the engine is dumb! BMW of North America was sued and screwed people over especially if you went over 120k mikes you didn’t qualify!
The N63 was certainly not known for its reliability - V8 twin turbo means expensive problems when something does go wrong. The engines were problematic don't get me wrong, but offering warranty over 120k miles is tough for turbochargers, especially on an engine like the N63 that produces the power levels it does.
2016 750ix with only 41000km. N63 is a junk engine, had pieces of metal in oil filter, and shimmering oil in my last oil change. Classic pre engine failure symptoms. Maintained religiously with oil changes, etc. I’ve owned many different cars Lexus, Porsche, Honda, and Nissan and all super reliable. BMWs are junk and they are making disposal cars, don’t buy, classic money pits. Too much plastic in their engines and eats oil like nobody’s business.
J - So sorry to hear this, but we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.
they why it's either the 535 or the M5 them 550's be on bullshit time.. 😮💨
Bucky - We've seen some good 550's, but they certainly aren't the greatest.
I do not no what you are smoking but it must be some real bad stuff
H - Whys that? Cause we’re providing unbiased information and it may not be want you want to hear?
Bmw cant make a reliable big engine
Brave - Not entirely true.
