You should build a miniature TARDIS just big enough for one person to fit in it. Wait for a day when the beach is crowded. Then get about 20 friends to line up and go inside. The people around the beach won't know what the hell to think. You can just tell them it's bigger on the inside!

please be careful, the hydrostatic pressure is massive on those boards. we use 2-4 inch steel w steel crossmembers. I know you are a smart dude, but I've seen water soaked soil break a 3/4 inch piece of plywood like a toothpick. The guy died. Horrible way to go. He had kids too.

I must admit that I worry for Colin's safety. He's a bit of a wild man and we enjoy the vids, but I certainly don't want him getting killed because he didn't understand hydrostatic pressure.
(Like the fella building an underwater breathing canister on UA-cam and there was a trained diver just about wetting himself about the possible dangers in that in the comments and no one wanted to listen. Thankfully, he was not harmed, but I felt he was taking a risk he didn't fully understand. If we, the folks of the internet, egg on this kind of thing without raising a red flag, their blood would be on our hands.)
And I hate to be a downer! But let's understand risks and be safe about the chaos!

Love that you took the time to do small project like this, some might think what is the point, but in fact you can learn so much hands on experiences and valuable information from it! However, I would add cross beans to push the opposite panels, the reason for that is, the company I worked for had an accident not so long ago, the panels caved in and the person buried alive, and the hole was less than 5 foot deep!

Fun fact: the most likely location for a death in a commercial construction site is a trench less shallow that the victim's height. Collapses around his chest, suffocates while his mates try to dig him out by hand. Using an excavator will squash his internal organs like driving over him. This is crazy dangerous, and I am glad that Colin was lucky enough to survive this. Hopefully they pulled the plywood out after, so nobody was tempted to dig down to see what was at the bottom. 5 years from now the lower levels of that plywood will be like wet cardboard...

    • @idahomike

I couldn't even finish watching I was cringing so hard. Having worked in industrial trenching this is incredibly dangerous. People die every year in trenches less than 4 feet (1.2 m) deep. I would never trust thin plywood like that with my life, which is exactly what they were doing. Proper trench boxes are usually very robust, heavy metal, and I've even seen those start to fail. I sincerely hope nobody gets killed after watching this video and thinking it's a good idea.

Mike Price I’m pretty sure he did take it down, but not 100% sure. Obviously since you’ve worked with it before you know way more than me, but I just wanna ask, how strong would the walls have to be to withstand the pressure of the sand at about 10 feet? Is there a formula? I’m just curious not trying to start any argument, I just legitimately don’t understand how 3/4 plywood can’t hold the sand back for a couple months. Again not trying to start anything just genuinely curious

Once at a place in NZ, I saw a long-drop slowly become a short-drop, then a no-drop, then.... a climb-up! it was "old" and filled up. After a large gathering, the poo even filled the toilet also, then started to mound up over the top. People had to sort of stand high above it and hope they could drop their load on the heap without it rolling off and sticking to their leg. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. After that they tore out the entire toilet block and installed proper flush toilets.

Missed a trick with that one, I used to dig graves for a living so have a bit of experience. Digging a 4ft unsupported hole is more dangerous than you would think. Removing the supports so you can fill it back in is often the worst part.
We usually used aluminium shutters with hydraulic rams to keep them open but The simplest solution is to use scaffold boards and add them one layer at a time. Then you are never digging more than one foot unsupported and you have a much stronger structure than you get with ply.
Can literally get killed doing this kinda thing and nobody wants to be digging their own grave.

Maybe while the pit was still open, it wasn't the worst idea (without fully understanding how much weight and pressure would be on Colin if it fully caved in suddenly). But putting that "floor" and screwing it down? That's like screwing the lid on the coffin shut man. If someone was in it and that lower "floor" caved in, there's no way you'd undo all that in time to save the person if their head was trapped under the sand.

When Fred Dibnah built a model pithead in his garden (without planning permission), he built the shaft lining out of brick and let it sink down by digging under the wall foundations. I think a circular retainer is much more stable than a square one as the entire structure is under compression. What would probably work well is large diameter HDPE pipes.
The same mechanism has been used for centuries in digging out the foundations for bridge pillars, although it was common to use a coffer dam made of iron.

He has no idea how dangerous that is. OSHA outlines very easily what a confined space and trench is. He’s lucky that cave in was small.

The plywood is made into caissons. Same idea using concrete "pipe section" caissons in developing horizontal collector wells (sunk vertically), hundreds of feet below the surface.
If that plywood collapses into the vault... suffocation, especially compressive suffocation, is a particularly horrible way to die...not to mention the instant claustrophobia.....

Pipe of that diameter would be 10 to 100 times stronger that the plywood coffin he built...
