Is someone ever going to build a sizeable live in dugout cabin.... I mean for cripes sakes my Bobcat gets severe closterphobia when I close my office door... I am actually researching building a giant dugout on a piece of land I own. Possible even being able to use the top space. I am contemplating using really thick rubber roofing over galvenized steel structure..
Cozy? I guess. When I camped out a while back, camped for months at a time, I had two tents and a tarp over my sleeping tent, and dressed up about like you, bushcraftgr. IOW, I was dressed for the very cold, just like you. But I did it without heat in either of my tents. So why, other than esthetics, is that fire necessary? Seems like a lot more work than I put into it, just setting up two tents, putting unleaded gas into my cook stove, and then--voila!--I'm camping! And yes I did get a few inches of snow once, which stayed around for three days, then back to normal camping. My tents and tarp held up just fine. Everything fine in storm later that year with 100 mph winds. I used bungee cords, they stretched but did not break. Of course your set up looks better on YT than mine did all those years ago. But............ and I'm not complaining. It's a great video. I just wonder why if that fire was soooo hot why you never took off even your watchcap. So you're in Alaska and there's no snow, but it's 20 below? Is that the factor I'm missing?? I gave you a thumbs up, and I like the looks of this shelter. It really does look cozy. Edit: I read your bio, and if you are 11,000 feet up there, and you filmed this in November, then I imagine it's very cold!! Good luck, fellow camper.
Natural drainage is going to have water come in from the uphill side, you need to trench it around that area to all water to flow out and away from your dugout
After he finished laying the rocks down, he piled dirt up on an angle to the top of the rocks so everything slopes away. He did it on both sides and the back. I doubt water will infiltrate and will just follow the slope downhill. He also had the roof boards overhang pretty far past the sidewalls and filled the space in with dirt.
@@wallymcguire2033 He did, but I still wonder about seepage. After (or maybe during) storms, when the ground is saturated, I worry water will seep into the dug-out from the sides.
@@egyas There is a UA-camr in Russia that built a similar structure and he ended up getting flooded with about 2 1/2' water so it's definitely a valid concern. I really don't know how you can dig into the side of the hill and have it not flood, but he's built several of these now so I'm assuming he knows what works and doesn't. Time will tell though.
Hands down, a person must have respect for a man like this! I have always been an outdoorsman's ever since I could walk and it's in my blood. I'm a descendant of Jim Bridger and I love the mountains. I always have the urge to go build something like this and it turned out very good!
Build it knowing that could happen, and line the retaining walls with plastic wrap or a tar paper like product. Something that's rot resistant. Even the Styrofoam insulation boards would help prevent water from seeping in.

Requires so much that is unseen. Procuring nails. Steel tools and cookware, the energy it takes a man in food units to do this alone, and where those food units come from. Beautiful work.
That's why our ancestors never did this kind of stuff alone. Humanity always survived through community. Even this kind of long, hard work becomes much quicker and easier once you have a bunch of people working with you.
I have an over active imagination. Imagine the world is coming to an end, and people are heading to the mountains. They are tired and have been transversing the mountain tops for hours. They know they must find shelter before dark. Then they stumble upon one of your expertly built bunkers, and it is a Godsend! They gather wood build a fire and set out to hunt for something to eat. They have a chance now; more of a chance than others who can’t find shelter. Cooking their catch, they eat and ly down to sleep protected from the cold harsh weather outside. 😊
Terrific build!. I have a lot of admiration & respect for individuals who are creative and skilled with their hands. Geometry tools & methods are rudimentary but extremely effective. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Looks amazing! I love building underground shelters! They say it’s to much work and time but it’s the safest and most protective shelter you can make! Here in West Virginia we have the extremes from all seasons so underground is where I’ll be!
One of the best, cosiest dugouts I've seen. Kudos. I think I'd have preferred a higher chimney that clears the roof by at least a few inches if not at least a foot, but given both the likely frequency and duration of use of the fireplace, impact of dumping hot air into the side of the roof is probably negligible

In this day and age of square footage it has been lost that a comfy bed, a fire and a cozy space is all that matters. I bet that place retains heat big time with that stone and fireplace, yet summer, I bet it’s nice and cool. Well done!

Not to be critical but I would have installed a steel bar for a pothanger in that fireplace.

This looks super therapeutic. Friendly PSA is if you're working with tools by your self in a remote area, a tourniquet is a great thing to have.
