Honestly, it's because he can enjoy the fruits of it. Most of us, the labor we put into life pays someone else more than it pays us, IE: our basket is almost always shared. Projects you do for yourself are your fruits of labor. More fruit that turns out juicier. Okay I'll stop with the food

Planning can be fairly easy, esspecially if neighbours don't issue any disputes and it's in a low traffic area not affecting public property, but apparently the first tunnel just got "permission to retain", which is to say, he dug it and then asked if he was allowed to, which is apparently a thing you are allowed to do.
Innovation is generally frowned upon. I am amazed they didnt make him fill it in. Although....He probably has celebrity status in his town by now. Making it a smidge easier :)
@@jsmythib The ONLY reason they allowed him to keep it is because the internet would have destroyed the local council's reputation if they said he had to fill it in. Moral of the story, before you do something make you're famous enough to get away with it haha

Yes, and I hope there is not a video on youtube where they can see the progress of the build. That would be a disaster if you would want to keep it a secret.
made a long prior comment about the marine use of cement washing steel for water tanks a century or so ago - when repairing a ferro cement boat there is an additive - pva glue 'like' product adhesive. i previously mentioned the aluminium trioxide used also - Al 2 O6 - there in NZ the is a water proofing agent also. w r t the 'pva like adhesive' when sticking new to old the 1:7 glue to water is used for mixing the concrete / plaster and a 1:1 mix painted on the dry old areas for adhesion such that it does not dry out before the new pour - different in your situation as keeping the old area moist while the new is poured would be real awkward. as prev noted a ferro-cement boat hull is approx 16mm thick - cement and sand - and our one - bought in the UK got us home to NZ
@@aphysique Both learnt and learned are the past tense version of the verb to learn. The only difference between the two words is that “learned” is the accepted spelling if you live in the United States or Canada, and “learnt” is the accepted spelling in the UK and other English-speaking countries.... On another note I thought it was just don't dig straight down. I obviously understand that digging straight up is not a good thing either because you don't know if there is water or sand above you in Minecraft
You're literally making my primary school drawing/dream come to life --- your secret underground tunnel series has been amazing and I can't wait to see the results when it's completed! *EDIT:* Also, Freddy is precious, protect him at all cost!!
He ruined his house, FYI. It won't show immediately, but long-term. Because he undermined the edges of the foundation on both his house and garage, those columns will begin to settle and shift horizontally until the house literally falls apart. If he'd simply moved the edge of that room forwards a couple more feet to clear the foundations he'd have been fine, but no, he ruined it.
After that pipe incident I was hoping to finally see Colin wear a hard hat. The safety tie can only protect so much! Also, I'm not superstitious, but that milk bottle saying "safety first" and then Colin getting hit on the head with a pipe is definitely quite a coincidence.
I'd love a video after all of this is said and done, about the logistics, codes compliance, permitting, etc. The fact that you're being allowed to do something this awesome in a residential? neighborhood is amazing and I can't imagine all of the background headaches that this project is certainly causing.

I don't need to explain how far the collective has gone off mission so to speak. Just the most sincere thank you for being a bright burning light of the crazy beautiful goodness we may strive for.
When this project is complete I demand nothing less than a “Neighbours react to my underground garage” and I would honestly love to see how all this affected the property value

I can’t believe the scale of this! Like many I thought the car lift was just going to be in front of the garage where the current hole is. The big reveal that it’s going to be a batcave under the whole front of the house is epic! Inside every man there’s a kid - and this makes my inner child happy!
Love this Guys very obvious, enthusiasm n passion. I understand that despite very strict building regs (and quite rightly as he has attached/close neighbours.) building permission below ground is not nessessary. Presumably, the reason that in Mayfair, Chelsea etc in London, are finding themselves digging down to accomodate swimming pools, tennis courts etc in their (very large) Georgian terraces. Nice.
Your kids are so lucky y'know, not cause of all the cool stuff you've built but because of your enthusiasm around it, willingness to share what you're doing and allowing others to help out if they want to. They have the perfect stepping stone to get into the exact same kind of stuff you're doing right now, which is an incredible toolset for someone to have from a young age.

Maybe it could trickle fuel onto the road behind the tires to leave burning tracks like in the movie. And that also kinda sounds like a bomb so probably not a good idea.
He said in an earlier video he didn't ask for planning permission and the local council found out after he posted the video and it was already too late at that point

Hi from Vancouver BC 🇨🇦 Love this project. I've been following you for years. I'm also glad you're having your E30 325i restored. Awesome. I had an 1988 E30 325is, but sadly in 2017 a moron in a truck ran a red light causing an accident. Fortunately no one was hurt, but long story short tragically my BMW E30 was written off by the insurance company dispite being repairable. To be honest something seemed off/shady about the situation. Really wish I fought harder to keep/save my BMW. Unfortunately I suffer from severe depression and didn't have the emotional energy to handle a long fight. I had known my BMW since it was new. My best friends parents owned it when we were kids and I bought it years later. I worked hard on that car over 2 years by myself restoring it. It was almost finished when the accident happened. It hurt as working on it had been helping reduce my depression. So suddenly having it taken from me was traumatizing and still is. However so happy yours will be restored. Keep up the amazing work on the tunnel/garage project. Don't get hit in the head again. Take care Colin. You seem like a really nice person. 👍
Watched the second channel videos and now this one. I can tell say with certainty (for me) that the second channel videos are a very nice addition. The main channel video gives a very nice impression of the project where the second channel videos go into more detail. I love that detail but it’s not for everyone so keep it up that way, more work for you which I appreciate. But I also appreciate the extra details in the second channel videos :)
well he has reinforced it all with concrete and solid steel (the tunnels, rooms and whatnot) and that dirt looks super dense full of hard rock. I'm not an engineer but just using all the common sense i have i feel safe to say that the foundation will hold its own just fine. : )
I am a civil/environmental engineer, the natural ground where he is building is clearly extremely strong, and the tunnel will not hurt the structural integrity as he has built it. The only concern would be ensuring very high compaction anywhere that he is not reinforcing with concrete if he is to place some material back.
@@SneakyV1_well he did get it inspected after he finished the tunnel and got it cleared, well once the council found out about it. Can't see how he could take the next step without it being legal.
HAHa, in America we do what's illegal and dont tell the council. We're supposed to get permits to build internal walls and such. Many just build the wall. @@youtubeSuckssNow
I'm not worried about what he's building and how solid everything will be once he's done. In the long term, things will likely be fine. I'm worried about the digging process. Having a large hole made and leaving it like that for weeks at a time where there's nothing holding the dirt / rocks back during that time, allows the ground to swell into the hole during that time which is very bad for a foundation of a house or garage.
I gotta say, i usually don't have a grin on my face when watching a YT vid, but those last few min of Tom and his digger had me smiling a whole lot. Absolute pleasure to watch you guys!
Holy smoke that milk bottle find is amazing! Even in the modern world there are omens to be discovered. It goes without saying, performing anything dangerous, one should be careful. Keeping in mind there’s so many levels to careful, from an engineering point of view. Always take everything into consideration and account for the unknowns. Love your channel 🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼☮️🍀😎
Hi Collin. That's an amazing job you're doing so far. A suggestion though; look into turning your driveway into a "permeable paving" one... It could help you make a "cover story" for all the digging you're doing... If you need any rocks, you can look into the pile of rubble you have and start converting it into gravel to help cover the cost of gravel from elsewhere... "Permeable" surfaces allow liquids to soak through into the ground and flow away from the property. This helps prevent flooding...(if the material starts causing flooding, that means you need to pressure wash the surface...) You could reshape the bricklay you have removed into the proper shape that "permeable" bricklay needs before you replace the bricklay on your driveway...🙏
@colinfurze This is very true. As someone sensitized to concussions, I get PTSD looking at the no-helmet look. All those tunnels and all your subscribers will mean nothing in the face of a traumatic brain injury.
I've imagined doing something like this all my life. Think it started with watching Thunderbirds in the 60s. Freaking amazing work👍 Have subbed to your second channel and liked everything i've watched.
Colin, you should consider sending some rocks you dig out to some fans, I myself would love to have / own a rock that is from the tunnelproject. Well maybe it’s just me I have a weird hobby collecting rocks (and soil) from all over the world! ❤what your doing is inspiring! Keep up the good work!
I once carried two and half tonnes of ceramic tiles from my drive up a flight of stairs and into my house. It took me two whole days and I was absolutely knackered for a week! It's good for you, Colin!
As someone who did drainage work with a Roadworks company, Colin is so close to having a little accident without wearing a hardhat or steel toe boots/shoes 😂
Hoping you are thinking about putting tubes around all of the piping and cabling into the house before pouring concrete over them. That way if there was an issue, you would have an easier time pulling those out and replacing them.
I’d say rock aggregate around the utilities. Either that, or have the utilities inside the room just at the ceiling height. With penetrations on either end. It would be kind of cool to expose the utilities in the room.
Colin, for concern of safety for yourself, your family and your property is why I am saying this after years of watching your channel. I applaud your engineering efforts for making your home a more unique design AND as a Civil and Structural Engineer specialising in ground works / temp works I would be seriously remiss / negligent in asking you to PLEASE wear a safety helmet and or some protective gear like steel cap toes. These are not hard to obtain. By law even visitors to a Construction site are required to wear this basic PPE. I would also caution you never to cut walls direction under a foundation vertically without not considering the 45 degree zone of influence and load distribution. The issue of direct cutting can cause differential settlement which is a serious undermining condition.

I don't know I feel like he's adding value and clearly he's done at least SOME planning. His front drive should be fine and the concrete he added should support his house since the area where the tunnel comes up has no pressure bearing down on it from the weight of the ground above.
Hey Colin, i work with paints. You were looking at rust prevention options. Have you looked into PENETROL ? it is made by an American based company and owned by P.P.G . It absorbs into steel 4 times deeper than any rust converter, surround any rust molecule to stop oxygen getting into the steel and reduces risk of the oxidisation process. It may be worth a look as a treatment for the steel. It can also be used as a primer for epoxy enamel metal paints 24 hrs after application. Hope this helps. Great job, looking forward to seeing it completed. Cheers from the convict settlement down under 👍

I cant even fathom how the submittal and approval process must have been to get this started. Such an amazing project.

I give you a lot of credit. Its like being a kid again and building a club house. Thank you for sharing such cool projects.👍
I think the scariest part about all this is making sure the house's foundation doesn't sink at all.
well he has reinforced it all with concrete and solid steel (the tunnels, rooms and whatnot) and that dirt looks super dense full of hard rock.

This helps prevent flooding...(if the material starts causing flooding, that means you need to pressure wash the surface...)
You could reshape the bricklay you have removed into the proper shape that "permeable" bricklay needs before you replace the bricklay on your driveway...🙏
Your creations are obviously amazing in every way, but I really admire your work ethic. Very special trait

The issue of direct cutting can cause differential settlement which is a serious undermining condition.
