So I'm trying to get my wife to fly and all was well until I told her "it's important to have the right attitude" She turned around and yelled " what's wrong with my attitude, know what? I'm not doing this now" Guess I should have explained aircraft terminology first.
I am brand new to the flight sim world, and I stumbled across your tutorials. You are a fabulous and inspirational instructor! Please keep making these videos, we are all learning so much about flight from you!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Thanks for posting, Emelie! I have watched a few of your vids now, and going from complete ignorance and uninterest I find your posts really interesting! You have great teaching skills! Cheers from Sweden!
Hi, I am 60 yrs old, I have been a licensed pilot since I was 16. I enjoy your videos. You can be my instructor any day. I was always taught that you pull back on the yoke to go up and that you pull all the way back to go down, LOL. You are an asset to the aviation community!
I just wing it (no pun intended) You know those people you see in movies that have never flown a plane before, but somehow land the plane? I pretend I'm those people...
Wow, what a great lesson! I only had a very basic understanding about the relationship between power, attitude and trim. After watching your lesson, I feel like I understand it so much better. You are a wonderful teacher! I just tried my first circuit after watching your video, and it was my smoothest landing to date. I was in complete control and touched down exactly where I wanted. I even had real-world weather turned on and was fighting a bit of crosswind and still set the plane down right on the centerline. Thank you so much for such an amazing instructional video.
Oh man, that Attitude / Power - Speed / Altitude rule completely changed the game for me almost in an instant. I used to have huge problems approaching and landing and just did 6 traffic patterns with take off and landing almost no problem.
You want to get your cat to stay? Simples! Get a little heated mat (mine is about 7W with a comfy cover) - once they find that, they'll never leave! :)
I really appreciate how you articulate things…a lost art. At 68, I’m not sure if flying ( other than FS 2020) is in my future as my sailing is already expensive and (pleasantly) time consuming. There are many similarities in flying and sailing principles. However, since I’ve been in awe of planes and flight forever…maybe it’s time. Thanks for doing such a great job with these. And full disclaimer, I only kept watching initially because Ninja looks Exactly like my precious Marvin who slept next to my head for 15 years! Great job. Thanks Emilie!
If you cannot get trackir, a combination of opentrack on your PC and smoothtrack on your mobile does face tracking very nicely and for very little money for the mobile app ... In case anyone is interested ....
Pattern work is what student pilots practice over and over (and over) again in real life... Abeam runway numbers... Power to decent.... Pitch for flaps operating range... Flaps 1, pitch for 80kts, turn base... Flaps 2, pitch for 70kts... Turn final... Flaps 3... Pitch for 60 until over the threshold.... Flare... Land... Don't ask how I know 🤣🤣🤣
Hey - you mention TrackIR and a few people have mentioned SmoothTrack and OpenTrack. I just recorded a demo of setting them up for FS2020 which might help you get set up for cheap. www.twitch.tv/videos/783890913?t=902s Start of the video (00:00 to 06:00) is about setting up the software; the link above jumps to me doing a circuit using the 'trackir'-like software, so pretty close to your topic today. Thanks for the videos; really helpful as always! I learned some things! I think I need to concentrate on trimming regularly, and the info on crabbing was really useful.
A VPN doesn't let your ISP see what you do, but it (eg. NordVPN) can see anything that's not encrypted within the VPN tunnel, so it's really just passing the buck. You have to trust that your VPN provider is being honest when they say they're not logging anything, otherwise they can easily just sell information about your activities elsewhere. Just thought you might like to know. :)
I just enjoyed this video. I was pretty a Sim flier 20 years ago, and started recently again. Let me say this is the best lessen I ever got in the fields you cover here. Especially the landing technique has put me on a new level of concept how to do. You own a terrific pedagogical talent and its a pleasure to watch the way you present these videos.
The engine characteristics in FS don't help with this. One of the things I really hoped they'd fix in this version (vs. FSX and earlier) is the slow response of piston engines, but it didn't happen. Idle to full power in FS takes 3-4 seconds (longer if using the keyboard for a throttle as there's no longer a dedicated "full throttle" key) but in a real airplane it takes less than a second if you move the lever reasonably fast.
Thanks Emilie. Nice tutorial. I'm not a real pilot but have been simming for years. Back in the day we had to figure all this stuff out ourselves (no tutorials or internet!) I crashed more often than I landed! It is great that we have an actual real life pilot now teaching us how to do it properly. Keep up the good work mate. PS Hug for Ninja ;-)
Hi Emilie. Again loving the tutorials. I’ve been flying flight sim since MSFS 2004. Just with this tutorial, it showed me I’ve been I’ve been landing using the incorrect procedure. The Power, Attitude & Trim info was so useful. I practiced it in the Cessna, then did the same circuit at my airport here in Brisbane in the A320. OMG. It made manual landing in the jet so much easier. Finally getting consistent soft (butter) landings. Thanks for doing these tutorials.
Love your content, Emilie. I've just started simming on X-Plane and this tutorial has been super helpful. I can finally stop ruining my landing gear :p
The first pattern turns were amazingly coordinated standard rate turns. Real pro stuff Emilie. For airports not aligned with the cardinal points (N,S,E,W) use the DG to glance at your 90 degree heading prior to turning. Peterborough 27 has PAPI lights which are great for understanding what being on the 3-degree glideslope looks like. One thing that helped me early on was to "fly the numbers". Understanding the specific aircraft with flap configuration, what airspeed would give me the proper rate of descent.
This is so helpful. I used MS Flight Sim X a long time ago but just mucked about without knowing what I was doing. Now we're in COVID lockdown (again) I'm going to get MS FS 2020 and learn the correct way to fly. Subscribed.
Awesome thank you! You should do a collab with V1 Sim hes an Airbus Captain and does tutorials too. Maybe you can teach him the mighty ATR! or you in the Airbus! Anyway, subbed and look forward to more
Same. This is helpful. I’ve been aiming the nose of my aircraft down at the runway numbers during landing at a reduced speed, but as I would pull up to cruise position, the aircraft would then tend to climb and so would TD halfway down the runway. I’ve then been overcompensating for that by aiming the nose down until it’s time to pull up and flare, and then completely cutting power. It made for a less than graceful experience

Thank you very much Emilie for another great video. Unfortunately I don’t have a pc yet, but I’m working on that atm. Can’t wait to fly with this simulator😁
Great video! One thing I noticed is that you mentioned reducing power on the roundout if you start to float. Almost every other lesson I've seen has said that you should pull the throttle back to idle as soon as you cross the runway threshold. I assume that's incorrect advice? (I'm referring, of course, to Cessnas and other such small aircraft - I understand that one should never lower the throttles to idle while landing in a Q400, lest it turn into the proverbial "Crash-8." 😄 )
Thanks, Emilie for explaining things with which I have some struggle. I will try, for sure, to fix it next time I'll fire-up my simulator. Thanks again! 😀👍🤝🛩️

@@Pilotemilie If you happen to find one here in Germany I'll help you get it to you :) Wonder if they're sold out here too, now - never thought something like that could happen haha. None in the US on sale either? Shipping those would be easier for you.
In Soviet Russia we used to call these flight regimes, 1st for normal flight where losing airspeed leads to excessive power that tends to accelerate the aircraft, and 2nd for landing or near-stall conditions where losing airspeed leads to power deficiency that tends to decelerate the aircraft further :)
Your landing formula helped me. Tweaking the sensitivity rate and dead zone is helping also. Still having trouble on the downwind-base-final turns. Getting the rectangular pattern helps. Having difficulties seeing runway to set up for final. Thanks for the videos.
You should try x plane 11 if nobody has mentioned it already, it does not look as good, but the flight model is supposed to be far better, aka a real simulator.
Great video!! Really liked part about the circuit pattern and on the downwind leg keeping runway half a wing strut away. Hardest part for me is keeping headings correct for down wind, base , and final. Also when transitioning into the circuit pattern when approaching airport. Just started using flight simulator and I am really impressed with the scenery and able to pick out landmarks for different parts of circuit pattern. Doing a lot of flying out of Brampton airport.
Emilie thank you for your videos i am just starting to fly (msfs 2020) again and am wondering if it is due to the set-up adjustment or if it is normal that when i trim up to fly basic attitude, the trim goes back to 1%? surely this should be fixed and not keep dropping back?

Ninja ❤❤❤ (ok ok I know, same comment on all your videos.... I just love cats 😂)
Thanks... from CYYJ !
Hi Emily, from Kuala lumpur
You should try x plane 11 if nobody has mentioned it already, it does not look as good, but the flight model is supposed to be far better, aka a real simulator.
Emilie is an awesome teacher
Happy black cat day ninja!!
Emilie thank you for your videos
i am just starting to fly (msfs 2020) again and am wondering if it is due to the set-up adjustment or if it is normal that when i trim up to fly basic attitude, the trim goes back to 1%? surely this should be fixed and not keep dropping back?
