Commenting a bit late on this I know but a couple things: First, Great video! Someone should pay this man to be an instructor. Secondly, with the Xbox I've found the throttle to be the most difficult thing to manage, particularly when using the cockpit view. I rectified this by using a wireless USB keyboard and assigning throttle percentages to the number keys. 1 is 10%, 2 is 20% and so on with 0 being 100%. This has revolutionized my landings. Note that by default those keys control ATC responses. I cleared those. I use a wireless mouse for that. Hope this helps anyone who's interested.
Having flown for a weather modification program (not the pilot, just a copilot not accruing hours) in western Kansas, a lot of this rings true. You can tell you are a true pilot Squirrel. Nice work.
Just found a couple of your videos on landings and I really appreciate the great tips you provide! Being a newbie, 66-year-old MFS pilot trainee, I think your tips have already helped a bit smoothing out my relationship with Mother Earth. Subscribed!
Some folk are just naturally talented and have that ease of delivery to natural explanation. You explained this so well you made me want to buy the game. Absolute masterclass! Bravo 👏👏👏
My first attempt at a landing, a few days ago, I stupidly decided to pick the closest airfield to my house, and it was just a little field with a bunch of grass, and a bunch of tress at the end. I kept flying away and coming back at it, but I just couldn't see the airstrip until I was right on top of it, and usually I was at the wrong approach angle. I had to abort the landing about 5-6 times, but on the plus side it made landing at real airports much, much, easier!
I really love your way of explaining things. It takes account of the knowledge people have or don't have, and you explain very clearly every step with easily understandable reasoning for every instruction, all really great! The only thing that my very literal brain struggles with is when the plane is a few inches above ground and you say to wait for it to "fall out of the sky"... out of the sky??? It gets me every time!
Can you do a turbo prop tutorial? More specifically how to use the blue lever. Every time I fly a turbo prop my range is half of what it shows on the world map.
The blue lever is for the propeller, you adjust it for a specific RPM - from my studies, only for setting cruise RPM and subsequently makes less noise. The throttle is what you actually adjust for proper fuel flow and economy, as well of course the fuel levers. At cruise, you want to be anywhere between 60-70% power and adjust the fuel mixture levers accordingly
@@cubie3835 How do I set it? What gages do I look at? No matter how low I set my fuel my RPM do not change. I'm just confused on what I'm looking for on my plane. Thank you for your help.
@@rotor13 How do I set it? What gages do I look at? No matter how low I set my fuel my RPM do not change. I'm just confused on what I'm looking for on my plane. Thank you for your help.
i just want to clarify this, cause i think that people might still see this. The blackleveris the throttle, which will change your power, the blue lever is your rpm which will also reduce the rotation speed of your engine through angling the prop blade. Once you are at cruise, you bring this to give you the most rpm without getting into the reds. Then there is the fuel lever, which is usually red. This will affect fuel usage and eventually rpm. The way to set this properly is once you are at cruise keep bringing it down until you notice a drop in rpm, then you bring it up a little so the rpm stabilizes. You are now at optimal fuel and rpm. P.S. the moment you change the throttle this must be redone
Wow!!!! I love flying. I get goose bumps just watching these videos. Just picked up FS yesterday for my XBOX X and I love it. Flew over my house and parents and it’s amazing. Still getting used flying w the controller since I’m waiting for the new Turtle Beach flight toll to release. Thanks for the pro tips and yes…I agree with the last guy…you should teach if you don’t already!
Really loved the video man, out all of the different ones I’ve seen this not only describes what to do but the reason behind it. Really loved it! If you want any suggestions for other videos, I would really love to see the process of starting a Cessna from a cold start and actually taking it off from the cockpit view. Thanks for your video, great help and can’t wait to try this. Just to check, at what point do you stop trimming? Just before touchdown or somewhere in the threshold? The bit I struggle with is just before the wheels hitting runway doing the bobbing up and down. Thanks in advance 👍
If you turn on all the basic assists, turn off all the simulations (fuel, damage, etc.), the game is quite arcady and easy to play. Really enjoyable to explore different locations.
Having bought the PC version on its release day, I agree it can look intimidating. I started off learning how to fly the sim in this very aircraft and as my "skills" improved, I ventured onto larger props then small jets. After 140 hours of flying I am about to embark on the largest passenger jets. All it needs is a lot of practice AND patience early on and it becomes very rewarding. Good luck.
I never played a flight sim before. Just turn on all assists and you’ll notice that after some time you’ll be getting cozier with the controls and will be turning them off one by one. It’s very easy to learn, lots of support.
Man, I have the game preloaded on my Xbox, I'm so pumped to play, but holy shit, this sounds complicated as fuck! It's actually got me kind of intimidated to even play. Could you maybe do a couple different planes for the landing challenges? I have good accuracy but I always land too hard and always get a C or a B.. and the scottland one, I can't even land that plan..
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised to see the support for using the power for airspeed. That's not how it is, and that's not how any flight instructor teaches it either. Pitch for airspeed. Power for altitude. How come, @Squirrel?
I bought a series X primarily for FS. I have some simulator experience on much older versions and the importance of trim is this game is crazy and I feel like I’m constantly needing to fiddle with it. My other gripe with this game is that the PAPI is practically invisible on approach and seems kind of inaccurate. Not sure if that’s adjustable
There are plenty of tutorials for the game controller already out the on UA-cam for MSFS PC. There is no difference. Both platforms are exactly the same. You might want to think about buying a USB hub for your XBox though just so you know you're not going to run out of ports in the future.

A 5% glide (approximately 3 degrees) implies a standard descent rate of 300ft per every nautical mile. Explanation: one nautical mile = circa 6000 ft. And 300ft = 6000 x 5%. So, if you are 1800ft above the runway, you should start your descent 6 nautical miles before the threshold of the runway. Check constantly you are staying on the right glide. With a 60kt horizontal speed, your plane flies one nautical mile per minute and so your vertical speed should be -300 ft per minute. Standard descent rates: 300ft/mn at 60kt; 400ft/mn at 80kt; 500ft/mn at 100kt; etc… All this is true when there is no wind. The usual circuit height (pattern altitude) is 1000ft above the runway.
