Commenting a bit late on this I know but a couple things: First, Great video! Someone should pay this man to be an instructor. Secondly, with the Xbox I've found the throttle to be the most difficult thing to manage, particularly when using the cockpit view. I absolutely adore this game. I’ve just bought a Series S just for it. I started off landing like I’d just stolen a prop plane from the GTAV airport 😂 but I’m getting better now 💪✈️😍
I bought the Series S just for this game also. Only my second foray into the Xbox ecosystem. I had the first Xbox(2001 ish), and now I have a Series S. Of course the first console I ever bought was a Telstar gaming system, which I got in 78. So I've been at this a long time.
Id like to understand getting off the ground, working with Air Traffic Control and understanding what they are talking about. I cant wait to see all these videos and learn 🔥🔥🔥
Just started on the MSFS, I cannot over emphasize how much I have benefitted from these superbly presented videos. The training that is included with the FS is nowhere near adequate , many thanks for the time and care you have put in to this.
I agree, the in-game training is very disappointing. It feels like a rushed afterthought and taught me more or less nothing. I certainly didn't learn enough to do my own flights successfully.
I love your teaching, it's so clear. Never understood the difference between 'trim' and 'flaps'. Thank you so much. I can't play this until midnight tomorrow as I'm working till late.......ggrrrrrrrr. Stay safe.
One thing to add about flaps. They can also be used to quickly lose altitude if you're coming in way too high and your plane doesnt have speed brakes. Basically use the flaps as speed brakes, to allow you to point down at the target, lose a heck of a lot of altitude, without gaining too much speed. I once went from 12k feet to 2k feet when i was on final approach this way. It's dicey, but a great trick.
i aske my wife what the difference was between flaps and trim , her answer was quite simple really , she said if i have the clippers in my hands you will get a trim. She then said for flaps , you will have to wait until later
As a younger guy this is pretty much how I was taught by the RAF in a Cessna 152. Best days, ever! I'm now reliving my past in FS 2020 on my Series X. So happy! 😁
This is probably the best explanation I’ve heard in all my career of flight simming. Altho guys please remember, skil is the thing you need. Even when I was really skilled but had a 3 month break, and my landings were all over the place. Practice is everything.
You can also program the nav to give you a good approach as the default route is a straight line with no thought given to landing, use auto pilot and set your altitude. Once you get to final approach press the approach button and it should guide you down nice and straight. All you gotta do is manage speed and pull back on yoke when you’re about to touch down. Doing it this way also gets you a achievement. The cessna 172 is probably the easiest to program the navigation system on
This is so much more helpful than the in game tutorial. I know nothing about airplanes but this has helped me A LOT. My struggle now is figuring out how to navigate to another airport. Very good. I think that before trying a landing, learners first need to learn to fly SLOWLY. Learn to fly just above stall, high enough to allow recovery. Lots of people are scared to fly slow. But this is imperative for landings.
Absolutely the best discussion of the important elements of a good approach and landing that I have ever heard; I have my Pilots Certificate and IFR rating as well as more years of experience than I want to admit to, so I think I can have an informed opinion. Having flown for a weather modification program (not the pilot, just a copilot not accruing hours) in western Kansas, a lot of this rings true. You can tell you are a true pilot Squirrel. Nice work.

As a pilot flying a pa28, I actually learnt in a C150/152. Couple of things we are taught which should add , regarding trim … we follow the Acronym PAT .. Power.. Attitude .. Trim … you set the power for cruise (usually 2300-2400rpm) … get the attitude for straight and level .. and then trim so you can essentially fly hands off. To land …. On finals (if it’s properly realistic£ you need carb heat below 2000rpm , can be 30 degrees outside , but you will get carb icing… and that’s not good !! Set power to around 1500 rpm and use teim again .. here’s the important bit … you do not need to point the nose up or down. If the plane is trimmed right .. you control your decent with power … so on finals your aiming for 60-65 knots … once at that speed trim to that speed … so then when you increase power , you will arrest … or increase your decent by pulling power back. Once over the runway .. power fully off .. hold stick back a touch … ground effect will lower your stall speed and angle of attack will naturally lift the nose so you land. Another great tip .., if in cockpit view .. on finals .. sim to keep the runway as it gets closer in exactly the same spot in your screen … do that abs toy will always land on the runway … then it’s just a case of looking at its profile to judge if too high or low … or off runway has PAPI LIGHTS … 2 red 2 green is perfect. Hope that helps
I used to fail fail and continuously fail to land any plane successfully before watching this video. So simple explanation and such a good teacher. At times, I forget to bring the wheels down, but landings are pitch perfect. And I do circus things like dropping off from 1000s of feet just near, about 5 kms to runway and try to adjust for a perfect landing. Mostly successful. Either way, it's your Xbox and your game. Do take risks and BE PATIENT.
I haven't watched this video past 1 minute yet--but I'm playing with a controller and I came here precisely because I was having difficulties landing my Cessna with a A grade. And in the first seconds I hear you mention you have an earlier video about HOW TO SET UP MY CONTROLLER. Which I have been so frustrated with because I know I have issues with how the thumbstick goes from deadzone to STALL PITCH in 0.5 seconds flat, and I could kiss you for anticipating this content need and directing me where I need to go. Now I'll go to that video and watch that first. And then this one. Take my subscription.
Can you do a turbo prop tutorial? More specifically how to use the blue lever. Every time I fly a turbo prop my range is half of what it shows on the world map.
The blue lever is for the propeller, you adjust it for a specific RPM - from my studies, only for setting cruise RPM and subsequently makes less noise. The throttle is what you actually adjust for proper fuel flow and economy, as well of course the fuel levers. At cruise, you want to be anywhere between 60-70% power and adjust the fuel mixture levers accordingly
@@cubie3835 How do I set it? What gages do I look at? No matter how low I set my fuel my RPM do not change. I'm just confused on what I'm looking for on my plane. Thank you for your help.
@@rotor13 How do I set it? What gages do I look at? No matter how low I set my fuel my RPM do not change. I'm just confused on what I'm looking for on my plane. Thank you for your help.
i just want to clarify this, cause i think that people might still see this. The blackleveris the throttle, which will change your power, the blue lever is your rpm which will also reduce the rotation speed of your engine through angling the prop blade. Once you are at cruise, you bring this to give you the most rpm without getting into the reds. Then there is the fuel lever, which is usually red. This will affect fuel usage and eventually rpm. The way to set this properly is once you are at cruise keep bringing it down until you notice a drop in rpm, then you bring it up a little so the rpm stabilizes. You are now at optimal fuel and rpm. P.S. the moment you change the throttle this must be redone

Wow!!!! I love flying. I get goose bumps just watching these videos. Just picked up FS yesterday for my XBOX X and I love it. Flew over my house and parents and it’s amazing. Still getting used flying w the controller since I’m waiting for the new Turtle Beach flight toll to release. Thanks for the pro tips and yes…I agree with the last guy…you should teach if you don’t already!
Thank you Squirrel. I just got back to flight when FS20 came. Had forgotten many techniques, particularly trimmed slow descent. Tried this tutorial with the 172 on my PC. Greased it first shot after one go-around. Amazing how the bird touches down with my hands off the stick.
Really loved the video man, out all of the different ones I’ve seen this not only describes what to do but the reason behind it. Really loved it! If you want any suggestions for other videos, I would really love to see the process of starting a Cessna from a cold start and actually taking it off from the cockpit view. Or explaining takeoff and landing from other planes like a Boeing 777 and others. REALLY NICE VIDEO.
Lovely. I made my first successful landing after looking at your video. Just got my series S and did some 10-20 rounds in the sky around the runaway until finally i could master the speed reduction before landing. In fact I totally missed the flap position but was still able to land it. Next time i would use the flaps and it would be much more lovelier landing. Thanks much!
My first attempt at a landing, a few days ago, I stupidly decided to pick the closest airfield to my house, and it was just a little field with a bunch of grass, and a bunch of tress at the end. I kept flying away and coming back at it, but I just couldn't see the airstrip until I was right on top of it, and usually I was at the wrong approach angle. I had to abort the landing about 5-6 times, but on the plus side it made landing at real airports much, much, easier!
Your guidance and tutoring towards the MSFS is brilliant, thank you! I've invested in a home-sim set up and can enjoy your teachings at my leisure before venturing out one day into the world real of flying lessons. I think your airfield location is not far, so when I do, I'll look out for you!
As a complete newby, just got my first xbox s, Love your videos, even thought I took off from a small Booker air field and landed safely on Heathrow airpport runway on my first attemp . All due to your great training. Now just waiting for airort police to arrest me now !!!!!!!!
Now I can't wait to go back home and practice landing again. I finished the landing tutorial in the game yesterday but the landings that I've mastered are very ruff😂
I remember when msfs launched on PC and i had no controller, but the keyboard and mouse :)) and basically i quite landed my planes using the mouse by adjusting the throttle and trimming it cause the num keys were unusable :)) only ailerons on keyboard, not even rudder :)) now i know how to land a plane with keyboard and mouse
You are my newest find on youtube. Amazing, keep it up. Im brand new to MSFS and im already looking at buying yokes and sinking many many hours just flying.
Holy crap the in game tutorial makes me want to throw my controller through the screen. Keeps setting me back every 2 seconds if I slip up. This is a way better tutorial please make more
A great video that I have found very helpful and keep coming back to. One thing I am still having problems with and finding confusing is trim. Every time I try it the plain still carries on going up or down and not levelling out. I think I understand what it is used for, just don't quite understand how to get it to do it. But will keep trying and with a bit of luck it will click, or sink in.
Hi Spuirrel, It is a very good tutorial footage you offered, I have seen all of your You tube concerning the MSFS 2020 flight, they are very instructive for learning simulating flights, I have no problem with take-off but always struggling between trimming and throttle control in landing, now I got more clearly ideas on their relations, I am now learning the cj4 landing, although there are different needs in the speed, but the basic are the same, thank you for the knowledge you offered, yes, practice! practice! practice!
Thank you, fantastic tutorial, easy to follow and very effective, my controlled crashes have now turned into controlled landings since following the advice here.
If you guys are new to MFS2020, you actually need to use the PAPI lights (on each side of a runway red and white) if both light are equal (2R:2W) thats good height.
Morning great video can I add some of the finer points, attitude is for speed and power is for rate of descent . Trying to approach a runway from a long way out is very difficult so flying a good circuit is the best way to do good approaches and landings. The circuit is a very disciplined way to fly and will be very worth while to improve you flying skills.
Very true. Just an example: in real life, when just about to land, you can judge the distance to the ground precisely. In a simulator, however good it is, it's not so easy to judge that distance.
Your tutorial is a great help.At first when jumping inside MFS on xbox its a bit intimitating with all these choises to make regarding controls, settings ect.I have expirience in some car racing sims like assetto corsa competizione or codemasters f1 games. These kind of games are similar in a way that if you turn off all driving help the game is much more rewarding coz it's like you drive the car with no guiding help.I just did my first landing after seeing your tutorial,it was succesful but i need to practice a bit more to get the hang of it.In the end it will be rewarding.
Have to thank you for your tutorials recently started playing this game and its helped a lot since I have started playing via the cloud on the Xbox and these have helped a lot slowly my hours are going up 🙂

Just got my XSX and wanted to test MSFS and by surprise I'm instantly hooked. And you sir are a true help for a newbie like me. New subscriber.
What yoke do you use for xbox series? I bought one but returned it due to lack of yoke and throttle sets. I was only using the xbox controller.
I did it!!! 👏🏽 I’m playing flight sim for the first time today and managed to take off and land using these brilliant tutorials. Thank you so much
Your guidance and tutoring towards the MSFS is brilliant, thank you!
I've invested in a home-sim set up and can enjoy your teachings at my leisure before venturing out one day into the world real of flying lessons.
I think your airfield location is not far, so when I do, I'll look out for you!
To simplify it for gamers, trim is related to how your controller for your console may have some drift and you have to compensate for that.
I wish i had found this clip sooner - it’s massively improved my landings. Thank you
This is the BEST landing tutorial I have seen. Very well explained. Thank you so much.
As a complete newby, just got my first xbox s, Love your videos, even thought I took off from a small Booker air field and landed safely on Heathrow airpport runway on my first attemp . All due to your great training. Now just waiting for airort police to arrest me now !!!!!!!!
Good to see you back flying cheeknut👍🏼👍🏼
This information is so good, I actually come here than my Sporty's Flight School tutorials. Thank you, absolutely brilliant.
Brilliant video Squirrel. You master the ability of teaching without patronising - thank you.
I've just bought my xbox series s . Found your chanel. And going all in.
Keep up the good work.
You are my newest find on youtube. Amazing, keep it up. Im brand new to MSFS and im already looking at buying yokes and sinking many many hours just flying.
What an great tutorial. Much better than the in-game one. Thanks! Now just need to figure out how that trim works. Right bumper and right stick?
Holy crap the in game tutorial makes me want to throw my controller through the screen. Keeps setting me back every 2 seconds if I slip up.
This is a way better tutorial please make more
Will try this tomorrow thanks for your help so much 🎮
A great video that I have found very helpful and keep coming back to. One thing I am still having problems with and finding confusing is trim. Every time I try it the plain still carries on going up or down and not levelling out. I think I understand what it is used for, just don't quite understand how to get it to do it. But will keep trying and with a bit of luck it will click, or sink in.
Same thing happens to me. I can never seem to get the plane to level out
Hi Spuirrel,
It is a very good tutorial footage you offered, I have seen all of your You tube concerning the MSFS 2020 flight, they are very instructive for learning simulating flights, I have no problem with take-off but always struggling between trimming and throttle control in landing, now I got more clearly ideas on their relations, I am now learning the cj4 landing, although there are different needs in the speed, but the basic are the same, thank you for the knowledge you offered, yes, practice! practice! practice!
Detail tipss & tricks help knowing what landing really means for msfs 2020. It can be realistic and of high educational value. Thanks!
I’m getting my Xbox in a few days I’m so hyped, super helpful thank you!!!
Why is it that pilots always have the nicest most soothing voices?
They need it to calm irate passengers 😬
Thank you for your excellent presentation.
It's easily followed, clear and precise and greatly appreciated for an absolute beginner sim pilot
Brilliant instruction. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much. I can finally land alright to the level I’d want to and FINALLY understand trim.
As a pilot this is a great video. Always remember, pitch for air speed, power for altitude.
@AD, and here I was, as a noob, doing just the exact opposite, and wondering why I failed on every landing! LOL!
Thank you, fantastic tutorial, easy to follow and very effective, my controlled crashes have now turned into controlled landings since following the advice here.
Love your videos as you explain in detail and then give examples. Keep up good work buddy 👍
First flight I took off, real rocky, saw the Redeemer, then landed thanks to your videos.
Thanks Squirrel!! That was a fantastic little tutorial. Nailed my landing first time round. Can't wait to get a flight controller.
That changes in jets...
Thank you for taking time to explain in details how to do landing .
I do solo flights irl, but this game I swear is actually harder lmao.
Very true. Just an example: in real life, when just about to land, you can judge the distance to the ground precisely. In a simulator, however good it is, it's not so easy to judge that distance.
Fantastic tutorial thanks! Could you do a tutorial on how to navigate? That would be brilliant!
Thanks a lot. Your takeoff and landing videos will really give us a great start into this game.
What a great video. Subscribed.
When I finally manage to get the Series X, and MFS2020 I will be coming back to this video. Can't wait to have a go.
Thank you for this tutorial. I wasn't looking at the trim stability hence some hectic landings.
Hi, great tutorials will you be doing anymore? If so can you do a flight planning one
Your tutorial is a great help.At first when jumping inside MFS on xbox its a bit intimitating with all these choises to make regarding controls, settings ect.I have expirience in some car racing sims like assetto corsa competizione or codemasters f1 games. These kind of games are similar in a way that if you turn off all driving help the game is much more rewarding coz it's like you drive the car with no guiding help.I just did my first landing after seeing your tutorial,it was succesful but i need to practice a bit more to get the hang of it.In the end it will be rewarding.
best tutorial I've seen so far, helped me a lot with landing. thanks 😊
Just an absolute treat, this video. I felt like I was flying with an instructor.
Better tutorial than in game. Amazing video.
I’m not sure I saw the trim numbers change at the bottom as you were making changes. What did I miss?
Have to thank you for your tutorials recently started playing this game and its helped a lot since I have started playing via the cloud on the Xbox and these have helped a lot slowly my hours are going up 🙂
much better explained than the training videos!
It's been an absolute pleasure listening to you. Thank you for these brilliant tutorials.
