Thanks for the video Emilie. My Dad took up both computers and flight sims in his 80s. He didn't even know the keys on his keyboard he was that green. I remember him creating huge manuals in binders, going through checklists, flight plans, interacting with the tower etc. as best he could in FSX. Every day he would make a flight after breakfast for a couple of hours. Sadly he passed away in 2017, still flight simming at 88. He would have been over the moon with this version of MSFlight so it's kind of bittersweet for me. I'll pick it up and do some flying in his memory.

As a 50+ year real life pilot as well as a 35+ year Flight Sim pilot, I find you refreshing and fun to listen to and watch. 2 suggestions for future videos to help real and sim pilots be the best they can be, are: #1- describe a solid Take-Off briefing... discussing the aspects of the takeoff and emergency procedures associated with each part... on the ground, runway remaining, in the air, in the climb out, etc. #2) discussions of engine failures and how to handle... straight ahead landing or a return to the airport. This is one of the fantastic things about the simulator... I have a reference sheet for over 100 of my favorite aircraft in my 2 present sims (out of the roughly 300+ aircraft and helicopters total in both sims) that list the minimum altitude (agl) and the maximum distance (miles) for each aircraft to be able to return to the airport in the event of a total engine failure. By the way, in some under powered single engine GA aircraft, there is no combination of altitude/distance that works (in takeoff configuration) and you must land straight ahead. It was great fun to test each plane until success was achieved. Yes, I know that engine failures are rare, but in my 50+ years of real life flying, I have encountered 3 complete engine failures... landing in a cow pasture once... on a highway once and one return to the departing airport. A good pilot is always practicing.
Captain Emilie you are awesome. Giving out tutorials like this on how real pilots do stuff is really inspiring. You made me come back to flight sim-ing. Downloading FS2020 again in steam. Amazing checklist, I could imagine calling out "check", "on", "off" for you on that seat next to you. Hehe
Since you're a real pilot and you obviously know these things pretty in-depth considering you've gotten to where you are, could you make a few more comments about why each of these checks are made when it's important, the importance of the order they are in, etc. Something that a person like you with a lot of experience would understand. I know a lot of simmers are into it because they can't necessarily afford to do the real thing but still want to learn the technical stuff. Don't have to go too in depth, just a few comments with useful information would be interesting to see. =)
There are a great many private pilot 'learn to fly books' covering the private pilot syllabus. If you are serious about learning the 'in depth' of how to fly an aircraft you should buy and read them. They are not all that expensive and that is what 'real' student pilot have to do. The instructors give you the practical and brief theory lessons, but you are expected to put some effort in yourself.
@@alexanderschieving5847 Let me check it out. I learned to fly some 45 years ago. I have seen many current instructional books ( I am more interested in advanced stuff) but I will get back to you. There are so many.

Ok just starting watching it but I have to comment. Set your damn stick up however you want! The joystick can actually be configured to work on either side. Makes perfect sense why you did that to me. I think just about every commercial plane has the throttle on the right, not the left. So it would make sense that is where you would put it. Only thing I have seen with the throttle on the left is fighter jets. F-16's had the throttle on the left and the stick on the right. Older ones like F-4's and stuff like that ( I was a mechanic on F-4's in the Air Force) have the throttle on the left and stick in the center. And since you fly commercial planes for real I would think your right hand would naturally drop down to the throttles to control them. Just like shifting a car, unless you live in the UK lol. I wouldn't reverse your controls just because some internet trolls get triggered. It isn't your fault the controls were made wrong.
Actually this joystick can't be configured to be on the left. I mean you can use it on the left, but it won't be comfortable, as there will be nothing to rest your wrist on. It was clearly not based on commecrial aircraft controls so it's not 'made wrong'.
@@ovatone The throttle is where you would really get in trouble trying to switch hands lol.. and ya the X-52 is an older HOTAS that is general-purpose so it's not "made wrong." I'm sure if the MSFS content gets traction it'd make sense for her to grab some better gear.
@@ovatone Hmm I thought sure my x52 came with extra panels to convert it to left hand. However after looking in the box you are correct it can't be swapped. I wonder what stick I was looking at that could be? I know it was one of them I was looking at. I swapped my controls to see how it would feel. Not bad honestly. The stick is fine. Feels good enough and you can hit all the buttons just fine. The throttle is a little strange but usable. And to be honest if I remember correctly that throttle was a pile of crap out of the box. I really wish they wouldn't bother with the contours, hand rests and hand specific button layouts on them. They would work just as well without them and be more universal. The x52 especially seems to be more about looks than function though. Not the best purchase I have ever made. I don't hate it, but for the money I feel it could have been better.
Excellent Emilie, It is very clear you are a great flight instructor and pilot. Thank so much for taking the time and your skills to teach us virtual pilots the basics. I'm looking forward to your smile and more adventures in the future. Merci beaucoup!
Lol you have the biggest smile on your face. Is that what I looked like when I went from xp11 to msfs? Still a lot of bugs but so much potential! Thanks for explaining "dont sink" because I always sat there like "I'm flying and climbing! Not sinking! What is this the titanic?!" This is so well done. You can ignore the Patreon message about your rig. It's all here now (to be fair I sent that before this posted). A capable system woohoo.
I started of with Bruce Artwick with the first Flight Simulator before Microsoft brought him out, you had low resolution and you can fly over green scenery all the way from the east coast to the west cost. The engine sounded like a marble in a tin can. Just 5 airports, and now look what we have today. Been with FS since 1977.
Excellent tutorial, easy to spot your a real life pilot. I set the failures to on (not timed) and last flight my engine was on fire! At least I was about to taxi 🔥😂lol look forward to the next vid. You want to have a look at head tracking, ranges from cheap and cheerful using opensource software and a webcam, using your apple phone, to £200 natural point trackir. Next best thing to a vr headset

Love this!! I'm just getting back into simming. Haven't done it since FS98. These tutorials are EXACTLY what I want and need! Keep it up and thank you!
Man, the checklist on this plane is so much more relaxed. I tried the checklist on the TBM930 and if you don't go through it _faaast_ and start moving your butt the engine just overheats. 😂
I have just watched some of your videos. OMG they are amazing. I have been using FSX for a while now and in your videos you have explained alot more on checklists etc. Hope you are keeping safe. A huge congratulations on your promotion. Keep up the great work
Am trying to figure this out myself, I find using button 1 on my joystick, the trigger, give the view to the nearest landmark, when landing that'll be the airfield, giving me a quick check for when I"m at 45 degrees or whatever. I feel you pain with the adjustments you need to make. I got FS the first time for my Apple ][ and had a homemade joystick with no self centering. My brother in law was a flight instructor building up his hours so he could work with his dad with Flying Tigers way before they were bought out by Fed Ex. He couldn't fly it at all but he talked me into my first successful landing. Neat thing, just before his dad retired they had a chance to fly together as pilots on a 747 international flight. Gary lost his seniority after the buyout, ended up flying 727s domestic at the end of his career.
I can always tell native Calgarian from a non-native by how they pronounce the city ... Non Native: "I just moved to Kal-gair-ree" Native: "I was born and raised in Kow-gree"
@MasterWasp74 Yes, Calgary is Cow-Gree, That’s right. I know that, even though I’m from Munch-Ree-All. If you say a Mon...Tree-All, I’ll know you’re not from here.
I dunno, Emilie, weren't you right the first time about which hand to use for throttle and yoke? Your instincts sounded right to me, assuming you're in the left seat as PIC. Maybe it's the hardware that's wrong. A lot of the joystick and throttle combos out there seem to be aimed at gamers wanting to fly F15s or shoot lasers at asteroids, rather than practice aviation procedures. I'm planning to buy the Honeycomb yoke and TQ for this reason. Great video anyway, I haven't flown for over a decade now so this kind of resource is great for jogging my memory. You remind me of my instructor, she was similarly relaxed and matter-of-fact, with good banter, a deep love of flying and (luckily for me) endless patience!
If someone wants to fly an f-15 that does not mean he's a gamer. Try dcs world f/a-18, that's a very deep and accurate simulator, and you want to have the throttle on your left hand if you're into it.
So... right hand, left hand controls..... I'll defer to my Q400 driver when she's landing on 02/20 or 12/30 at YEG with crosswinds and icy tarmac. Pretty sure she's got that !!🤘🤘🤘🤣🤣🤣
Hi Emilie. Just fyi, for next time, you can enable the automated co-pilot checklist in the tools bar. This makes it easier if you want to proceed auditing the checklist itself while the co-pilot does the procedures. Great video!
Emilie not only are you a REAL pilot, which the smart people know, I also think that you are absolutely stunning. I am wishing you get back to work soon and flying in the skies. Take care and be safe. Best wishes being sent your way from Denver CO.
As a Toronto resident, it was quite disappointing to see how bad some of the areas of the city look in FS2020. Also for some reason there's an elevated river in the Mississauga/Oakville area lol
@@CrashForce A handful of cities worldwide have been hand modelled, and for some there is 3 dimensional Bing map data. For most towns and cities there is currently no such info, so they apparently are using an AI to interpret regular Bing maps and approximate what may be there. As Bing maps continues to improve, this data will get better, and the details should get more accurate.
@@Ashlynn.HudsonWelburn Do you happen to know which of the cities have been hand modelled? I'm genuinely curious to know as that would taken a long time to put together. I actually thought that only about 40 airports were modeled by hand and that was about the only thing they touched by hand on the entire planet but yes I'm looking forward to the future updates of Bing Maps.
@@Ashlynn.HudsonWelburn My main issue with Toronto is that they placed generic buildings on top of some really poor imagery taken from Bing Maps. This imagery also includes 2D images (top-down) of the buildings that are replaced by generic buildings and even 3D versions of themselves. It just looks weird to have an image of the building laid on the ground and then a 3D version on top of it if that makes sense.

Look likes the landing was a 3points one... the nose wheel seems to touch first, which is not very good :) Little tips for the knobs : you should be able to scroll over to rotate those buttons, which will much more easier than click multiple times! Nice video as usual, with very useful explanations for non pilots viewer... and pilots who never use G1000 (my case :) )
Since we are in lock down still and this sim has gotten so popular, this is a great way to build your content and videos. A lot of real pilots are making funny videos with this sim. Also do not forget a lot to come.. This is not the final game, lots of areas being corrected and more planes that will be more realistic.

Did you think about creating an amazon wishlist or a donation pocket? So people could buy you for example a YOKO Joystick and Throttle or Honeycomb Joystick and Throttle? Being able to use the sim realistically helps you and your viewers, but the peripherals are quite expensive, but maybe viewers are willing to donate? :-) I am working for Lufthansa myself, so I know your situation... :-(
Thank you so much for this video! So cool to go through the checklist, makes me feel like I am actually the pilot! You described it perfect! love the detail in this game, so incredible!
Wow, you are rather meticulous with your check-list. I'm more of the "Is the plane still there?" check. FIREWALL IT, BILLY!!! While making some sarcastic welcome announcement to my fictitious passengers like "Thank you for flying Air Charlie. Today's route into Seattle-Tacoma is estimated to be 95 minutes, but we think we can do it it 60. I have turned on the "fasten seat-belts" light because the co-pilot has been smashing cocktails of night-quill and Redbull since 5 am and is currently engaged in a shouting match with demons that only he can see, I'm anticipating a dog-fight to commence at any moment. We know you have a choice in air carriers and you chose poorly"
do you think after playing this for hundreds of hours, you will need a mouse when you go back to flying a real plane? ...maybe you can just bring the cat lol

Realistically, we can be anywhere left or right of the line when taxiing and no one cares....
Good practice to maintain in real life for other traffic, for ATC to look out for you, etc.
I am here in 2022 but this video is still so helpful and will be helpful for years upon years! People wanna lean a bit more advanced detail with video explanation and you do it so good! Thank you for this video!
00:00 cat wants to become pilot 😂
I approve of furry copilots.
Today was my first solo flight with an ASK-13
Agree with this. Would be great
There are a great many private pilot 'learn to fly books' covering the private pilot syllabus.
If you are serious about learning the 'in depth' of how to fly an aircraft you should buy and read them.
They are not all that expensive and that is what 'real' student pilot have to do.
The instructors give you the practical and brief theory lessons, but you are expected to put some effort in yourself.
@@charlesbrewer6552 What would be a good suggestion for a learn to fly book?
@@alexanderschieving5847 Let me check it out. I learned to fly some 45 years ago. I have seen many current instructional books ( I am more interested in advanced stuff) but I will get back to you. There are so many.
@@charlesbrewer6552 that is so kind thanks
Just don't look at the checklists for basically anything other than the C172. You're lucky if they make it past engine startup.
Thank you for your light hearted approach. It takes the stress out! And, yeah LOTS of great info in this new "to me" journey. Big Thank you!!
I also loved your Peterborough circuit as I am from Kingston originally! Thanks for the reply! Your cat reminds of mine in Kingston! Guinness was her name! Your enthusiasm, informative & perfectionist personality make a real treat to watch any of your world class videos! Your expressions at are just priceless! Adrian
'DON'T SINK' 'DON'T SINK' 'DON'T SINK' i was telling myself that all the time while i was fishing in harbor freight pvc boat
If you sit in the right seat of a commercial jet the throttle is on the left.
In light general aviation aircraft, throttle is usually on the left.
Excellent Emilie, It is very clear you are a great flight instructor and pilot. Thank so much for taking the time and your skills to teach us virtual pilots the basics. I'm looking forward to your smile and more adventures in the future. Merci beaucoup!
I have watched this video twice now and I’m still learning more each time. Your a great teacher. I hope you come back and do more.
Lol you have the biggest smile on your face. Is that what I looked like when I went from xp11 to msfs? Still a lot of bugs but so much potential! Thanks for explaining "dont sink" because I always sat there like "I'm flying and climbing! Not sinking! What is this the titanic?!" This coming from a guy with only 13 hrs of logbook time real world and havent flown in 2 years...dang 200/hr lessons
This is so well done.
Toronto ... yea ! I love your tutorials... if you can continue on this trend that would be great !!
Didn't know you were from Toronto. Huge shout out from the 6. :)
I have been looking around for a good instructional video. THIS IS AS FAR THE BEST! Thanks Elilie!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I can't wait for Microsoft to add the Q400 and watch you fly in game. Loving your videos. Captain.
"There's definitely an aircraft on the runway."
*PROCEEDS TO LAND*
"That was much better!"
Can't stop laughing at that!
"Not a real pilot"
Proceeds to go through checklist without using focus view AND explains things as she goes. Yeah okay guys
This all day long
Are you implying Emilie is "Not a real pilot?" You would be mistaken!!! What aircraft have you ever flown that has a "focus view?"
@@OleNavy Bruuh, might wanna read his commet again :)
@@OleNavy lmao chill, simp..
@@OleNavy I think he's saying she IS a real pilot because she doesn't need 'focus view' and can explain things as she goes.
Can I just say that I really really enjoy your videos .. there are so many youtube gigs out there with all this fancy videos etc and I have learned more from you in 30 mins that I ever did with all the other videos for weeks on end!! I thank youtube for you appearing on my feed!!! you are great!!! SUBSCRIBED!!
the game is eye candy, the explanation is eye candy and the person in front of the camera is EYE CANDY!
5:39 Emily you can hover the mouse over the border to scale the window so you can see all text😁. I've waited so long for you to upload msfs2020 again. Thanx!!!
Emilie Don't worry about not being on the line when you were taxing to the runway at 15:37....... they obviously put the line in the wrong place. :)
Obviously!!!
thanks for an instructive video. I think the training in MSFS is too basic so those advanced trainings are really valuable. I really look forward your IFR flight!
It happened to me on climb out, and wouldn’t shut up so I turned the avionics off and then on again, problem solved 😂 surely there’s a better way...
I was trying to do exact same thing and fly around the cn tower in MFS and I just randomly ended up watching this and subscribed.
I have just watched some of your videos. OMG they are amazing. I have been using FSX for a while now and in your videos you have explained alot more on checklists etc. Hope you are keeping safe. A huge congratulations on your promotion. Keep up the great work
I wish Microsoft had the Dash 8 in FS2020. Then you could show us how you fly!
Thanks for taking the time to show us this. As someone who wants to really learn this stuff, it is very nice to get free tutorials from a legit pilot.
your channel is growing as fast as light ! great work, have fun !!!
Wow, you guys really do say “Toronnah”...
Can be also “Churonnow”... just sayin’
I can always tell native Calgarian from a non-native by how they pronounce the city ...
Non Native: "I just moved to Kal-gair-ree"
Native: "I was born and raised in Kow-gree"
@MasterWasp74
Yes, Calgary is Cow-Gree, That’s right.
I know that, even though I’m from Munch-Ree-All.
If you say a Mon...Tree-All, I’ll know you’re not from here.
Toronnnnahhhh
I like saying 'mon-RAY-allll' to confuse the heck out of everyone lol
You're right; I never even thought about the throttle being on the right side in a real plane. Sorry... that's just the gaming industry being lazy af
what a woman ! and the smile on her face as shes flying is soo nice to see ! love this channel
The smile on your face while you play the sim can tell you love it.😍
I dunno, Emilie, weren't you right the first time about which hand to use for throttle and yoke?
@@andrealioce4341 fair point 🙂
So... right hand, left hand controls.....
FS2020 relies on Bing Maps, so yeah...
@@bobbarker3248 True but other cities like New York look a lot better..
If this wasn't a buttered landing I don't know what is.
Loved this thank you so much. Never been a fan of flight sims till i played the latest Microsoft flight sim 2020. And I love it to bits. Just bought a whole new PC and monitor because of it. And bought Yoke and pedals. Also for my Birthday my wife is getting me flying lessons at a small local airfield that is actually on the sim, Barton airport. You're lovely and your vids are fantastic. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
I really like your videos Emilie...hopefully, you'll be getting back in the real seat soon. Also like your simulated walk-around on the outside of the plane..."Yea, looks good!" My sim walk-around..."Lets see, wings, tail and propeller...yea looks good."
I hope so too! Thanks Patrick!
You should start streaming on twitch. People would love you!
Seconded.

And today I learned I've been saying "pitot" wrong
Look likes the landing was a 3points one... the nose wheel seems to touch first, which is not very good :)
Little tips for the knobs : you should be able to scroll over to rotate those buttons, which will much more easier than click multiple times!
Nice video as usual, with very useful explanations for non pilots viewer... and pilots who never use G1000 (my case :) )
My mains definitely touched first 😉

Since we are in lock down still and this sim has gotten so popular, this is a great way to build your content and videos. A lot of real pilots are making funny videos with this sim. Also do not forget a lot to come.. This is not the final game, lots of areas being corrected and more planes that will be more realistic.
Hi Ty for your video it has shown me alot i usually just start on the runway now I'm going to try and learn how to flight from parking spot, you explain everything clearly and easy to understand thanks again I look forward to your other tutorials.
I am working for Lufthansa myself, so I know your situation... :-(
I gotta look into this as I am not familiar yet! But I really appreciate the offer & suggestion! :)
Emily,
Can you try to fly military jet planes like F-18 or SU-27 in DCS?😀
Or one of the old jets, like an F-86.
@@ThatCanadianGuy-e1p Yes, that would be epic 😃

Track IR is really good and simple to set up
She's very good...it feels like she's a real pilot!! :)
