The thing is, as a Frenchman, we got the same problem with Didier Deschamps with a very pragmatic approach to the game of football. The other side of the coin is the results: 2016 Finalists 2018 World Cup Winner and 2022 World Cup Finalist, and we nearly won the bloody thing despite being ABSOLUTELY DOMINATED DURING 80 (FKN) MINUTES...
in 202Ø-1 When we were eliminated by switzerland, everyone in france, pundits, journalists, even in social media, went on Deschamps' throat and begging for his sacking to replace with Zinedine Zidane... despite being victorious on the last 2 international tournaments (yes, I include the Nations League) so I can understand the Gareth Southgate problem in England...

As a Romanian, my main concern for the English National Team is how they're wasting their golden generation with this style of play. Going conservative against Serbia or Slovenia isn't going to win you the tournament, And the mentality of defence wins games isn't wrong but isn't right either, if you're a top national team with all kinds of players, I'm sure you can control the game by keeping possession and having a really good attack. And if Southgate doesn't realise this, imagine the horror against bigger national teams like Germany who if they score, won't stop attacking.

@real_overtale I saw them against us in the World Cup Qualifiers, we took the lead in Hamburg 0-1 but the moment Germany equalised in the second half, they became more and more aggressive and scored from a practiced set piece in training (For context: Talking about the Germany 2-1 Romania match in the WC Qualifiers). Then the Premier League starts and everybody forgets about those issues.

I remember when Belgium were first starting to show signs of their golden generation losing their edge, Roberto Martinez played in a way that compensated their weaknesses instead of capitalizing on their strengths, because the weaknesses were more pressing than the strengths were strong. Southgate's doing the same thing, but the strengths here are really fuckin' strong. You've got a young team and you don't press, probably the best attack in international football and you're playing in such a pessimistic cautious manner, a defense that let's face it, isn't exactly world class, and you're playing uber-defensive football, one of the best right backs in the world playing in defensive midfield, one of the best 10s in the world playing on the wing, and 3 of the best players in the prem this season making cameo appearances like Ryan Reynolds in that Fast and Furious movie. His strategy is anti-everything England's team is good at, that's why they suck.

  • @tajj7
    @tajj7 2 дні тому +17

Yep depressing, negative football, odd balance, players out of position, everyone looks knackered as well, no natural left back. So many bad decisions. We have the likes of Rice, Foden, Kane, Bellingham coming off huge huge seasons where they have excelled and we are either playing them out of position where they had that success (Rice and Foden) or in situations that don't really suit them (no runners going past Kane). Whilst other players just seem really restricted, like Stones, one of the best ball playing defenders in the world, who has basically created himself a new role at Man City, who excelled in the last two seasons progressing the ball from defence both with his passing and movement, yet for England I have barely seen him move or pass more than 5 yards. We have gone to an international tournament with a 33 year old solid pro of a right back, doing a job at left back, unbalancing the team, whilst natural and talented left back like Mitchell or Chilwell were left out completely (of a 26 man squad btw, 3 more than most previous tournaments, so we easily could have taken 2 normal left back AND taken Shaw gambling on his fitness). He has played Trent in midfield as this pass into space, big switch, quarter back style player, with no runners in the channels or in behind. So frustrating on so many levels.
Also all on the back of what was generally an exciting squad where he ditched old favourites and picked exciting in form talents.

My game plan would be to play two up top. Basically a 4-1-2-1-2. A glorified 4-4-2.
The defence is doing fine. Trippier is the only weak link because he is out of position because we took one left back.
CDM: Rice with Mainoo as the sub replacement. Wharton third choice.
left; Gordon with Eze as sub option, Right: Saka with Palmer as sub option.
Bellingham behind the strikers free role box to box. Double pivot off the ball, behind the strikers with it. Foden can be the second choice (he has gone home for his kid, so he might be out now).
Kane and Watkins up front, together. Kane works well in partnerships. Especially a fast counter part like his time with Son. Watkins can be the leg man. Kane likes to drop deep he can feed Watkins, While Watkins can create space for Kane.
Toney as Kane's sub after 60-70 minutes. Bowen can be Watkins under study.

The reality of Gareth Southgate is that he has rode his luck massively over the past 6 years, if you go through the World Cup of 2018 & 2022 aswell as Euro 2020 you will see the favourable teams he gets drawn against in group stages and knockout stages. Even with this luck he has struggled to create a team that blows away opponents, scraping by against national teams that aren't exactly world beaters like Ukraine, Senegal, Colombia etc. The fact of the matter is Southgate is below average manager whose luck continues as we get a favourable route once again to the final of Euro 2024, the problem being that when we do meet that big international team hurdle, Southgate is more than likely going to fall at that hurdle once again.

Having the most exciting generation of talent available and not knowing how to exploit it properly is perhaps much worse than the Italian situation, where at least we know we have few resources that can make us shine.

Italy's squad isn't great but you put Conte or even Allegri in charge of this squad and they'd do better. Spalletti is holding them back by complicating things. Italy did well with average squads in 2012 and 2016 because Prandelli and Conte stuck to instructions that were simple to understand and implement.
Imagine how messed up a coach must be, for wanting to build from the back AGAINST SPAIN.

  • @BlazinBlz

honestly, as an Australian, I absolutely love what Southgate's done
and by that I mean he's completely thrown away a golden generation, and now it's really squeaky bum time, because the main man, Kane has 1 or 1 and a half cycles left in him maybe, 2 at an absolute push but he has already had injury problems in his career with his ankle, and after Kane's gone, does England have that kind of generational striker? no, they have goals of course, but a striker like Kane is what can change those moments, it won't be easy to replace that's for sure
and whilst most the generation still has plenty of time of course, two other areas of concern, CDM, what happens if Rice is injured? though this isn't a uniqely England problem, a lot of nations have one class CDM followed by chaff, but it's still a worry, but more pressing, who in the ever living fck is the GK after Pickford? Dean Henderson's early promise seems to have faded, Ramsdale is a decent option but not spectacular, maybe James Trafford at Burnley? being relegated isn't the end of the world for a Keeper (see Ramsdale and Pickford) but you prolly want someone better
of course none of this is to say that a player won't randomly pop up and be a generational talent, you can rarely if ever predict these (who tf woulda thought Cole Palmer would have the season he did for example) but the time is quickly running out on the guarantees you have now, especially Kane and Pickford, and there is no guarantee of being able to find replacements, at the end of the day, Southgate is a upper League One, bottom end Championship manager AT BEST, he absolutely should not be managing the England squad, fck, I wouldn't want him to be managing the Socceroos, and surely, SURELY England can find better, even if they stick to the stupid "must be English" rule

Shoehorning players to fit into a system and playing them out of positions is what England do. It’s Scholes at left wing all over again. It’s a double edge sword for Southgate because what he really needs to do is drop one of either Foden or Saka to allow Gordon to play a natural winger on the left. Then we need to have the conversation regarding Bellingham and how he basically operates in the same exact area as Kane. I’m not English so I don’t have a horse in this race. But what I see England as is a mess of players out of position and southgate has very little clue as to how to put all the pieces in place. You’re playing a RB at LB despite the system reviving around wide players crossing and playing around with each other. You’re playing a RB at CM when the RB wants to push wider and interact with the wide players. You’re playing a natural 10 or RW hybrid at LW. And you’re giving Bellingham and Kane the exact same position to operate in. It’s a complete mess and it shows on the pitch.

The problem with Southgate is he has no motive to win or take risks to do well. This is the best job he will ever have. He will never manage in the premiership or any big league. No one would have him at a top 4 club around Europe, so he has no motive to use any risky or attacking tactics. If he loses a game 0-3 or more he will never work again. Its safer for him to just tell every one to stay back and we take our chances here and there. Put Klopp, Arteta, Pep, Ancelotti etc in charge of this team at the start of this tournament and England would be scoring 2 or 3 a game. Why does he get a pass? Even Mourinho would have this team playing better than present. This group of players could easily handle a high line and focus on the attackers staying high and in the opponent box. You have one of the fastest full backs in world football and your telling him to sit on 30 depth stay back don't overlap tactics. Mind numbing. I honestly think Jude Bellingham has more football IQ than the manager

As a Dutch guy, let me give u my thoughts if we face u guys.
First of all we lack our star midfielder FDJ which has been filled in by Veerman(very poor him inconsistency on the ball when that + passing should be his key trait on par with FDJ)/Reijnders(decent)/Koopmeiners(first choice replacement got injured). Add to the fact that Koeman for some reason keeps handicapping us 10v11 by subbing in Wijnaldum who is almost always unvisible and provides nothing on or off the ball aside from the good runs into the box.
Secondly Koeman also seems to be a very pragmatic coach like Southgate tho not as much as him. Against supposedly weaker nations he will instill an attacking mentality but against strong nations like France he will be satisfied with a draw when it couldve gone either way (but neither side went for the win in the end).

Sometimes in football you have to take risks, rather then sitting back and absorbing pressure from the opposition. If we took more risks against the Italians in the final, rather than sitting back, I am 99% sure we would have won that match. He is wasting our golden generation. Most of our starting eleven positions are held down by world class players who could easily slot into any team in the world and become a success.

England under Southgate have always been stale. At times England tend to break the mold like the world cup quarter final against France where even though we lost we sawpostive signs from the game, we looked really good going forward it looked fluid and good we at least deserved a draw from the 90 minutes in that game. This EURO's however we have seemingly regressed with a better squad. The manager, I believe is to blame for it. For he and his inequity in leadership not dropping players who deserved to be out of the squad and replace them. We are now at this tournament with him not knowing his best team. Even with his eclectic collection of players he has I firmly don't believe he has the tactical knowledge to make them win, work and play as a team. Alexander The Great famously said "I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion." Truth be told we have pride of lions led by this craven of a sheep.

It's weird how on the one hand some of the criticism of Southgate is so toxic, yet on the other hand, the toxicity is almost being used as an excuse *not* to criticise the man. Like you almost have to preface any criticism by saying that you're not one of these weirdoes who would throw a beer cup at a fellow human being. The Dutch criticism of the manager and certain players can also be very harsh, as the famous expression says, we're a nation of 17 million national team coaches. But there's not this hand-wringing that any criticism is somehow toxic or dangerous, or that by criticising Koeman you're part of the tiny .1% of fans that ruin the game for everyone else, or that criticising Koeman is akin to kicking a puppy. The thinking is more that he's a grown-ass man and he can defend himself.
With our team, there is a lot wrong, but at least we try to score goals. At least we came back against Austria twice, even if we left too much wide open space to Austria in the process. It didn't matter because we were already through. It exposed weaknesses, but a good coach (whether Koeman is one I'll leave for others to judge) can learn from this for the next game. Maybe with another approach we could have ground out a 1-1 too, but what's the fun in that when you've already qualified? If you eliminate the possibility of making mistakes as possible, you never learn from them.
The problem with Southgate is that he doesn't respect the fact that football is a sport, a game, and that people are investing a large amount of their capital (certainly far more than 25-50 years ago, and it comes at a time of a massive cost of living crisis) to attend these games. If you don't give respect, you don't receive it.

I think he deserves credit for that, but he should have left after the last Euro’s; it looked obvious then that he’d done his job, but we needed a really good manager in, that had a winning record in tournament football especially (would have loved Ancelotti to replace him, and I think England could have got him then). Definitely should have let go after the World Cup as we were abysmal then.
He’s just not a good enough manager to take the team forward.
This is a really talented bunch of young players and it’s clear that Southgate is just out of his depth.
