Hi Abbey, I was wondering if you could do a video on the new Garnier Fructis Hair Filler Inner Fiber Bond repair pre treatment that comes with the shampoo and conditioner in a set that just came out. It looks like they are trying to dupe the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate and the L’Oréal Everpure Bonding Treatment. I was just curious what you thought of it. Thank you.
The coconut oil hack is amazing. Guys, it WORKS. After 6 months of doing the pre shower treatment I can say I have seen way less breakage (which is didn’t know I have until my hair started feeling thicker lol), I used to trim my hair every 1-2 weeks (crazy I know) because the split ends drove me crazy because of my OCD LOL. Now I don’t have the need to trim my hair that often because the splits ends don’t come back until 2-3 months later (bleach and heat damage, can’t help it). I never invested in hair care because I always knew that hair is dead and can’t be repaired (fact) so that’s why I trimmed my hair soooo often FYI I have been using the Elvive coconut oil, which is cheap AF where I live compared to the OGX ones. I just ordered the Palmer’s one because it’s comes in the spray presentation so I am excited. Whenever I run out of any I just use plain coconut oil but I don’t like it as much. Also please note that my hair grows really fast, and it took me only 4 months to see the benefits of coconut oil, if your hair grows slower you may need even more time to see results. Patience is key
I’ve been oiling with pumpkin seed oil! Pumpkin seeds are a natural source of biotin, and antioxidants magnesium, zinc and phosphorus. It’s also rich in linoleic acid (fatty acids) and it has anti androgen properties, meaning it can treat hair loss for those with androgenic alopecia!
@@julieme7927I think it’s been helping! I take it in capsule form as a supplement and I have a bottle of cold pressed pumpkin seed oil to use on my hair and skin. I started losing hair like crazy this summer after stopping the birth control pill. My hair loss has slowed down since I started taking pumpkin seed oil. It’s also great to mix a couple drops in with lotion or moisturizer 😀
@@JaxDianneI ordered it from Amazon! I have a bottle of Maple Holistics cold pressed pumpkin seed oil, and i take it in capsule form as well. I believe the capsules I ordered were the Carlyle brand :)
I feel like when people say coconut oil will “build up” they’re talking about the solid 100% version in a jar that’s really hard to wash out of your hair. I love the OGX oil as well as a Palmer’s hair oil I found at Target that contains coconut oil, plus several other great oils.
This is how i feel too? Because the raw form of coconut can be so thick and can solidify. But hair oils with coconut formulated in already are much thinner consistency!
@@cayladeanne Huge bottle, too! The spray pump is not the best. I just spray it onto my hands and apply. Not as sweet smelling as OGX, but still has a nice scent and does the job!
I’m Indian and hair oiling is very common either with coconut oil or mustard seed oil Never had any issues w buildup etc I’ve been getting highlights for years now, live in a hot tropical climate and go to the swimming pool often My hair could honestly be a lot worse but it’s quite healthy
I am Sri Lankan and we do the same! We also add herbs to our oil like fenugreek, centella, amla, etc. We do oil massage our scalp too, what about you guys?
@@minervarose7664 scalp oil massages are HUGE in India. I swear it's like a bonding thing in families and my mom used to leave me feeling cncussed after it lmao
you are such a breath of fresh air in the beauty community ♡ you are so informative and are so passionate and it makes you so much fun to watch! ive been using the ogx coconut oil as a pre wash oil since i saw you recommended it and it reminded me of how long and healthy my hair was when i was using ogx oils !! thank you for providing so many people with such incredible information about hair health!! ive had a lot of damage bc of bleach and i didnt realize how much my confidence has gone down since i had to cut it short bc of breakage so i am really excited seeing my hair getting better :")
I’ve thrown the towel in with the curly girl method and felt my hair was never clean or soft! I’ve finally got Pantene and the ogx coconut oil and bam! My hair is soft and shiny for the first time in years and years! My hair fall has subsided and my curls are soft and bouncy! I’m so glad I’m “allowed” to use these regular products again. My hair feels and looks the best it has in decades.
Do you oil your hair before washing? I’ve been doing a wavy hair routine but I’m worried that the oil will prevent washing buildup from curl cream and gel
I use just the moisture pantene or I look for that cone she talks about in the her videos. I also oil my hair regularly, because I have course hair I need a little bit everyday but in saying that I also had more before shampooing.
If I sleep with oil in my hair I cover my hair with a plastic cap and a satin scarf or bonnet, it never gets on my pillowcase but I know everyone doesn't like to commit to that method. I love coconut oil, and I've used it for years in my hair care routine. I love to use the Kristin Ess signature hair water that has coconut oil in it first, and then I add on my oil. I also use oils on my scalp, but that's because it's on the drier side. 💜
Hello! I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet, but sleeping in a silk or satin bonnet can help protect your pillow cases and sheets from oils stains. It can also help prevent acne in the same way, by keeping oil off your face There are many types of sleep bonnets out there, and they are not just for people of color, anyone can use them! Highly recommend!
Thank you for saying that. I was telling my white coworker don’t be ashamed to wear a silk bonnet or silk scarf. She looked at me like I was crazy😂 but I told her it’s not just for black people. I told her if you’re trying to control frizz & help your damaged hair, I promise a silk scar, silk bonnet and/or silk pillow will help a lot.
I have used the coconut oil and L’Oreal Bond Strengthening concentrate pre-shampoo treatment (free sample) only 3x, and my hair texture has already MASSIVELY improved! Great advice! My locks are finally soft and not straw like!
I just bought these exact items. Do you put the pre-shampoo, wait the 5-10 minutes and then put in the coconut oil? And how long do you leave everything until you wash it? I’m still learning 😊
@@jodieubanks2479 Probably put the pre-shampoo on first because it is a bonding treatment so you don't want to add more coating for it to work through. But you can also just use the pre-shampoo as a mask before you condition - Abbey does this because she thought it was strange the treatment wasn't going on clean hair to maximize its efficacy. And then she talked to some manufacturer (I don't remember which), apparently the manufacturers tend to call items like these a pre-shampoo treatment to make the process simpler for the customer to use, but you can use it as a mask. In that case you could pre-oil, shampoo, mask with the pre-shampoo, then condition.
I've been using Epres since Jan along with the OGX coconut oil you recommended. Glad to know I've been doing it right this whole time! My hair has grown so much and looks beautiful 😍
I just made a comment on one of your very recent shorts the other day about how pre wash oiling changed my hair 100% from massive breakage that was filling the drain to silky awesomenss that looks like I never had a bit of damage. Glad you are doing a video on this simple step that frankly is nothing short of a miracle. I used to oil my hair with coconut oil ages ago and my hair was amazing then. I got really sick at some point and stopped. Now I realized thanks to your videos that it really was the likely key to why my hair was amazing. And back then I colored it. but there was zero damage. Prewash oiling is really the key I think. That and solid conditioning.
@@salapec3880 Just my way of saying that conditioner needs to be a priority. So the oiling is one part of that. The other would be using masks or really good conditioners. I found that masks are key for me. The other thing I did was use tresseme moisture rich conditioner or loreal ever pure conditioner after oiling it but just before I was going into the shower. It's a copious amount of conditioning, but it changed my hair in less than two months from crazy dry with vast amounts of breakage (seeing a lot of it in the drain every time I washed my hair) to next to nothing in the drain. My routine is wash twice a week. Pre wash oil both times. I use a blend of oils like avocado, grapeseed, fractionated coconut oil ect (had them on hand so used them instead of OGX, but OGX sounds like it works well). Then I use a hair dryer cap that I got off amazon to warm the oils which helps them absorb into my hair very well. It attaches to the dryer and I keep the dryer on the warm NOT hot setting and low air NOT high blowing air. This seems to helf the oil absorb as it's less oily when i take the cap off. Then I put in tresseme or loreal conditioner. Rinse it out, then shampoo. Then condition with a mask (though once every two or three weeks I do use loreal bond repair trie set). Then I squeeze the water out of my hair carefully in the shower and then with a towel very gently until it doesn't feel wet. Wet brush it, then gently squeeze out more water from it. Apply leave in conditoner. Finally, I use an ionic dryer on high to dry it. Takes maybe ten minutes. The dryer doesn't give off hot air. It's warm, similar to the heating cap but actually cooler. I really am astonished at how quickly this changed my hair to a nice healthy silky feel with next to no breakage. It even seems to have given some elasticity back to it. Since the only real change I made was to add in copious amounts of conditioning, I'm sure that is why it changed and probably so fast. So yeah, that's a solid amount of conditioning. :D
I did an apple cider vinegar rinse to my scalp two washes ago! It was incredible! I’ve never felt like I’ve had such a clean scalp and the way my hair shone and bounced at the roots when blow drying was amazing! Even now, my shampoo suds so much better. I’m gonna build this into my wash routine every 3/4 weeks as I have a very oily scalp and hard water. My hair is also damaged from colour and heat so I’ve just bought the Ogx miracle oil... it’s lovely on my dry ends. Can’t wait to see how the health of my hair improves.
@@03Marisab in between. I did one shampoo to get the majority of the oil out and rinsed. Then I applied the apple cider vinegar. Make sure you dilute it, I did two teaspoons with 300ml of water. Poured it on in sections to get my whole scalp. Be careful around your face as you don’t want vinegar in your eyes, even diluted vinegar will sting. Let it sit for a couple of minutes then massages it for another couple of minutes. Rinsed it out. Did another shampoo and rinse.. wait til you see how much your shampoo suds this time around on a truly clarified scalp.. it’s insane! Rinse well, you don’t want any ACV left on your hair as it’ll dry it out. Then conditioned the ends and rinsed and that’s it!
@@d26s10 interesting! thanks for the tip, I’ll try it out. I have an oily scalp and can’t go without washing my hair every other day. I tried for weeks to wash it every 2 days but I just couldn’t handle the oil at my roots. I will definitely try this out!
@@d26s10I used to do this for years! When I turned 18, my hair got a thick filmy feeling from any and all shampoo and conditioners, including clarifying. I eventually found a perfect balance by doing a ACV pre wash once every 2 weeks. I put in a glass spray bottle and would spray all over about 20 mins before washing. It was a huge help!
Hi Abbey! Thank you so much for this in-depth guide to hair oiling! I began following your hair care advice when I started PRP for androgenic alopecia in early 2022. Then I incorporated the OGX Miracle Oil last autumn when I started getting my hair lightened! OMG, between the OGX Oil and K18, my crispy ends felt so much better! Earlier this year, I began seeing a new stylist, and she used the K18 Molecular Repair Mist before my lightening services. And it is so impressive because my hair feels healthier post-treatment! Many years ago, in cosmetology school, I attended Olaplex training, and I remember how my hair and clients' hair felt less damaged after chemical services. Still, compared to how K18 makes my hair feel, there is no comparison! Thank you for all of the hard work you put into your content! Cheers! ❤
I started using the ogx oil like in this video to my hair that is LONG its down to my tail bone... oiling before washing has improved my hairs shine and health in a amazing way TY PRETTY LADY THAT LIVES IN MY PHONE! ❤
One suggestion I have used is the Kristen Ess clarifying shampoo!!! It was like a lightbulb going off!! I was like can it be this simple….and yes it was, now I regret cutting a few inches off thinking it was just getting dry and dull. I don’t even color my hair, I definitely think it was just product buildup. Thanks so much for the great tips!
Thanks for teaching me more about keeping my hair healthy. I took your advice on that specific brand of coconut oil and it made a huge difference in my hair after washing it out. Usually my hair is dry and rough and hard to brush after washing no matter what I use. but using the coconut oil prewash worked and my hair was softer and tangle free. I started loosing hair like crazy a few months ago after hitting menopause so I’m being more careful and gentle with my hair and following your advice.
I have 3c/4a hair and in general my hair hates coconut oil. But the OGX argab penetrating oil is amazing! The coconut oil one doesn’t work so well in my hair. I think all textures can benefit from an oil pretreatment before washing, it’s just making sure you select an oil ur hair likes AND that washes out properly.
I love using coconut oil by itself between washes on my ends, and it seems to work better for me in the summer (maybe because it actually melts on my hands then lol). I mixed myself up a little vial of oil that's 1/3 olive, 1/3 sweet almond, and 1/3 sunflower, since those are oils I had on hand from making herbal salve and sink into the skin really nicely. I added rosemary and tea tree EO too. I have a really oily scalp prone to sebhorreic dermatitis, so I was reluctant to try oiling my scalp, but I heard that neem oil is really good for that, so I try to put it on as a treatment before washing for about 2 hours max and that has radically changed the quality of my hair and scalp! It's not nearly as itchy and irritated. Neem does smell pretty godawful on its own, so I dilute it with olive oil and add tea tree and rosemary too. I have the ogx extra penetrating argan oil which I like for my ends, haven't been able to find the ogx coconut miracle oil in person (maybe because you've made it so popular!)
Abbey, I'd really love to see you review the popular hair "filler" products - these are essentially super liquid protein and oil formulas (e.g. like milk_shake integrity ampules) 🙏
I haven't heard of pre-oiling until tonight! Watched Cassandra Bankston, who sent me to Mel, and UA-cam recommended you. Great information. I'm going to try this out. Just purchased K18 in the Sephora sale. I wash my hair 2-3x per week, so I'll need to incorporate both maybe 1-2/week each. I'll watch more of your videos this week! Subscribed.
Omg! I am so happy I found you and the pre oil routine. I bought the OGX product and my massive hair shedding has stopped! I love how my hair feels and looks. Thank you Abbey! ❤
Thank you for your hard work Abbey 😊 I'm sure you have seen the comment before that fine, thin hair ladies have a difficult time with coconut oil. Ive been using the OGX Moroccan oil as pre-wash treatment instead since it seems to actually wash out. Seems like it's helped me gain some inches
OGX has a most version of this coconut oil for finer hair! (: also if you dont already - condition FIRST before shampooing to get the oil out. Then shampoo twice, and condition again (:
but that OGX oil is just silicone, literally. they just use coconut oil as a marketing claim in super tiny amounts. it's a silicone serum that serves as a finishing touch after heat-styling. coconut oil on the other hand is indeed a hair favorite as pre-poo, it simply prevents damage by soaking the hair, as it's pure saturated fat (triglycerides of saturated fatty acids).
@@YurinanAcquiline maybe oils are too heavy for western hair even as pre-poo ? because i've tried every silicone serum there is and it does NOT work on north african dry curly hair. it leaves my hair feeling like straw, especially since the volatile silicones go away. whereas one spritz of real oil leaves my hair nourished for the day.
I tried the OGX oil but could not for the life of me get it all out. No matter how many times I washed etc.. so my hair ended up getting really kind of gross and shedding a little, but I don't think it was the oil itself I just think I could not get it out of my hair LOL. However, I switched to another recommendation of yours the redken bonding repair treatment and WOW!!! Worked wonders so thank you ❤
Thank you so much for all this information! A few years ago, I had a hairstylist, recommend pre-oiling with a phyto product. I did it for a while but the oil was very expensive and quite heavy. I think I’m gonna try again with either of the product you recommend or something more lightweight. Also, I loved seeing you with your little dog, who is all grown up now. You’ve talked to her just like I talk to my dogs.
Abbey, I love your videos and have incorporated several of your recommendations into my haircare regiment (coconut oil, bond repair products) and I’ve seen SUCH an improvement in the health, shine, and length of my hair!! I have pretty thin fine hair and I was curious whether you knew of any products or techniques to improve thickness or treat the scalp for optimal follicle health, strength, and/or regrowth?
Thanks for the reminder to check last night's oil application. I have very short hair so mine is quick to do, but absolutely essential. My curls get weighed down easily so my oil mix has a lot of aloe & glycerin too. My hair has never felt nicer!!
I can't afford to buy k18 products, but at home I have Olaplex 0 and 3 and use those from time to time. But the real difference I found was using Dove intensive repair shampoo and conditioner (are the mask or the 1minute conditioner good?) and rosemary oil mix in roots and ogx coconut oil on the length of the hair before washing. In two months my hair has really, really transformed. I use a leave in a damp hair and Moroccan oil light version on dry hair. I get compliments from everyone and another product I really like is the new anti-frizz spray by Moroccan oil. Dream routine, all thank to you, girl. ❤ Kisses from Italy
Abbey - a hairdresser burnt my hair time back and I tried every single thing to help it.. nothing. Last week I bought the ogx oil and started doing your method… crazy to say my hair looks better than ever!!!!! No frizz, no dry ends. Thanks!!!❤
Great video, I love the thorough explanation and reasoning for each step. I too did a lot of research on which oil is scientifically proven to actually work (surprised to find that most recommended oils aren't). I did find some studies on pubmed, where sesame oil had been proven to help with hair repair, uv-damage and hair growth. I myself use a mixture of coconut oil, sesame oil and vitamin E oil where I infuse dried rosemary into for my scalp. I use the coconut miracle oil for my mid and ends which have worked wonders for me. I recommend looking into sesame oil if you're ever looking for an other oil or if coconut oil doen't work you! English isn't my first language, sorry for any mistakes :)
Btw fellow wavies 👋 i used to use “all natural” haircare and the CG method for a decade, but now I have a mixed (interchanging SLS and gentle shampoos) routine with using SLS shampoos and even that Pantene volume for clarifying, regular hair mousse or foam, a heat protectant with silicone then diffuse the hair until it’s almost dry, once it is completely air dried finish with an oil (also contains silicone) only on the ends and I’ve never had a better hair day in my life 👏 thank you Abbey
I've tried using coconut oil countless times. My hair turns brittle. Recently tried pure coconut in a mask overnight. Literally a 1/3 of my hair broke off and was so hard and brittle. There is such a thing as protein overload Abby, and coconut oil is NOT good for everyone's hair. I'm 54 btw and have tried it, like I said, countless of times. Thoughts? 😊
Hey Abbey! First off thank you so much for consistently giving us evidence based haircare advice! That’s extremely hard to find in the haircare community. Second, I’d love to hear your opinion on the Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & coconut oil line, have you tried it out? I personally loved the serum but it was so demonized online

I have super thick long hair. And I also have psoriasis. Olive oil is the best pre shampoo oil I have used yet. I drench my scalp and hair. 12-24 hr later my dead skin comes right off my scalp. After my shower my hair is silky smooth. And I can apply my psoriasis medicine to my spot after. My hair is so much more healthy when I oil it on a regular basis.
I have an oily scalp too but I always pre oil my hair all the way to the scalp to help with shedding. I wash right side up and then head down and then condition . So far since oiling before washing, my scalp has been less oily on non wash days! And my hair is soooo much better since seeing your chanel and pre oiling my hair.. thank you so much!!!!!

I feel compelled to write. I've struggle with dandruff so my only goal was to decrease the flakes and the itchy feeling on my scalp. I was so focused on that that I underestimated how months of using clarifying shampoos and no hydration would impact my fine curly hair. I realized how brittle and dry it had become. Horrible to the touch, frizzy, wouldn't form nice curls anymore, just dull frizzy limp strands.... These videos from Abbey saved my hair. So far I got the Loreal Elvive bond repair system and the Magic water 8 seconds and what a difference! Of course my hair doesn't look like a pantene advert but I can finally feel more softness and shine. Thank you for all the tips and product recommendations. ❤
What about hair porosity? I’ve read that low porosity hair doesn’t do well with coconut oil because it can’t penetrate the strands because it’s too heavy. Whereas like argan or sweet almond is better for low porosity?
So glad you touched on not using oil when using a bond repair shampoo and conditioner!!!! That just saved me from oiling before planning on using a bond repair shampoo and conditioner. I'm glad i have so many different shampoo and conditioner sets for this reason
I am leaving this comment for those who are reading through the comment section: She only means that suggestion for K18 and not other bonding products. I hair oil every time and use Redken ABC 5 minute mask after shampooing.
Okay I have a confession….I use my husband cheap $1.20 Suave strawberry scented shampoo when I was twice a week 🫢🙈. But, then I use Pureology moisture conditioner then Pureology color fanatic leave in, then L’Oreal series expert 10 in 1 before blow drying and flat ironing. I finish it up with Virtue healing oil. Am I defeating the purpose by using cheap shampoo? I seem like it cleans my hair well.
I think it’s extremely important to follow influencers who have a very similar hair or skincare as yours when taking any advice about products. I’m my self have very similar hair as this youtuber so for me this oil routine has been great. The only thing is that my hair has never been color or extremely damage and finding a UA-camr with similar hair conditions is very hard so I stick to this one.

If you come across anything about LED therapy for hair, please pass along. There seem to be a bunch of newer hair combs and helmets using microcurrent and LED. I’m more interested in using them as a preventative measure to keep my hair relatively healthy. Think they are mostly geared toward people with thinning hair.
Yay to getting rid of the coconut oil is bad myth 😂🎉 I have a combo scalp it gets really oily but also can get dandruff - oil (not coconut) on my roots before showering has been a game changer because the oil sticks to the oil I find that my hair doesn’t get as oily throughout the week when I do this.
I don’t use OGX because it’s not cruelty free. I can attest to using pure coconut oil in my hair as a pre-wash treatment but also as a leave in and I love it. I buy Now Solutions pure coconut oil, not the kind that people cook with from the grocery store. It works miracles on my dry, frizzy, coarse grey hair, especially after (not before) heat styling my hair. So for any one who is scared of pure coconut oil, I wanted to add my 2 cents. 🙂
I used the OGX coconut oil and I have fine, low-porosity hair and after using it a couple of months on my ends before washing, I kept finding my ends became very dry. I was wondering why and realized the only thing I changed was the coconut oil. I threw it away and just use a different oil and that’s working wayyyyy better for me
@@e.4124 I tried using castor oil watered down before putting it in my hair. I’ve found better results using a conditioner. In Brazil, we use a cheap conditioner or mask to help to remove vegetable oil before the shampoo. Following this reasoning, that's why i believe vegetable oils are also good for oily scalps: after all, OIL REMOVES OIL, water don't - that's science guys!
I'm having issues with hard water in my area. What your current a shower filter? I saw in another video you mentioned you were trying the Jolie Filtered Showerhead. Is that working for you?
This is great, Abbey. Thank you! One thing for me: I have very long, very, very thick hair. I noticed that when using the *excellent* OGX coconut oil, is that I do need to use even more shampoo. I already need to use a lot, but do need a bit more. It’s an excellent tip from Abbey, it’s very helpful to my hair to apply OGX before washing.
OMG! I just bump into one of your videos a few weeks ago, and watched some of your hair care videos. To tell the true most of the products are way too expensive for me, but decided to just start with the oiling, so I bought the OGX coconut oil, and omg!!! The changes in just one use are amazing! I'm so glad I found your video ❤
I use a silk or satin bonnet over my hair on nights when I oil so that it doesn't stain my pillowcase. The bonnet is much easier to wash and no visible stains. 👍
Hey everyone! Any fine wavy hair girls out there who air-dry and still see good results with these kind of routines with silicones? I always feel like the routines Abbey reccommends are only good for straight hair that will be styled after
hi abbey! i agree, that OGX oil is a godsend for my thick wavy/curly hair. just had to repurchase! i’m giving the mielle rosemary scalp oil a try and so far i like it (oily scalp that gets drier in the winter) would love to know which scalp products you use/recommend instead! thank you for always being so informative and helpful in all your videos ❤
Do you find that the oiling routine leads to more buildup, since it seems it would prevent curl cream, gel, etc from being washed out? I’m trying to stick to a wavy hair routine but incorporate the oiling. 😊
@@alisonhagen6704 i make sure to use a clarifying shampoo every time i oil, and pretty much every time i wash my hair (1-2x a week) as my first cleanse. i’d say as long as you’re washing with a strong shampoo or doing a double cleanse you should be good!
Hey! I just started using hair oil so I'm excited to see how it works for my hair. My question for you is, what is the best way to style your hair while you sleep? I mean is it better to leave it down, in a loose bun, in a loose braid. Thanks!!
Hello everyone, I just want to share that I have super fine, thin hair at the moment and I initially did order the serum spray version verses the miracle oil Abbey was saying could be too heavy for our hair type and it did work BUT I did try the miracle oil and I just think everyone should know that if you sleep with it in, it is workable for fine, thin, hair - vs. 30 minutes prior to washing. I tried it both ways and it was definitely too heavy to use if I only gave it 30 minutes but if I sleep in it, it works just fine!
Could one of you hair-expertise-ladies please answer the following question: Is colored hair also considered „damaged hair“ or are we basically always talking about bleach in those terms?? Thanks alot to anyone who can help me with that 😊
Colored hair is usually damaged hair. I say usually because we actually can change the color of the hair without using permanent color and the cuticle remains totally closed. In going that route we avoid any damage to the hair. If you use any kind of color which uses a developer, you will have some degree of damage. The more the hair is lightened, the greater the damage because more protein is broken down in the process. So if you are naturally brunette and you have rich caramel highlights done with permanent color that would be a lot less damage than going blonde with bleach. The amount of pigment we have to break down for the light brown highlights is less than the amount needed to be taken from the hair to create blonde. Any process that requires getting into the hair does some damage. Hope that helps.
I DO brush out my hair really carefully before oiling it. Howver, I always experience increased shedding whenever I do it. Got so used to that, so just take it as it is...Thank you for the video! Really informative and helpful as usual 🌹
I used to use 100% coconut oil as a prewash treatment, i would leave it on for hours. My hair would fell like and look like silk after. I stop doing it because it took time and planning. Since then so many oil products have come out making the process easier. I have thin straight hair.
What about swimming? Wet hair with epres before swimming or is that a waste of epres. I’ve heard wet your hair before swimming so that your hair absorbs regular water and not chlorine. Would you wet your hair and then oil, and THEN jump in the pool???
I'm a stylist and I'm not against oiling at all. I do it all the time as well as recommend it. And I also oil my scalp because it's the only thing I've found that controls my finicky scalp that gets dry fairly easily. But I also have certain ingredients sensitivities so I have to be careful what I use. I'm not adverse to any ingredients, whether silicone, sulfate, alcohol or whatever. Products are formulated with specific ingredients for a reason. Example is alcohols....certain alcohols are fatty alcohols that are good for the hair and are emollients and humectants, and even conditioners, masks and leave ins sometimes are formulated with drying alcohols in small amounts which allow the product to penetrate the hair but aren't in enough concentration to dry the hair. But nothing works for everyone. Also rosemary oil absolutely works in my experience, but should always be mixed with a carrier oil instead of used neat.
Bought ogx coconut oil the other day and I’m excited to start incorporating it into my routine. My hair has been damaged and breaking since covid, which L’Oréal bond repair has helped with. But I’d love to grow my hair out so feel like this coconut oil will be a good help.
Thank you, so helpful!!! Please can you deep dive excercise and hair care ... how best to not have to wash hair everytime you excercise, what products are useful during excercise to help prevent too much sweaty hair, hair bands etc. Thanks again!!
I think argan oil is my favorite vs coconut. Argan is great for low porosity hair too. I found its what works beat for me. I do like that ogx coconut oil though.
I get so excited for your videos!!! thank you for all your dedication to helping people achieve their best hair! I noticed you have a cowlick and I would love to see you do more a side part and really embrace it. I think it would look great and give you great volume
Thank you so much! You are helping me save my hair, and prewash oiling is the key i believe. Last year, i made the HUGE mistake of bleaching my gorgeous long curls and having layers cut ...i did it slowly thinking it would be more healthy, but no one warned me that bleach kills curls regardless. WELL fast forward to now, i dyed my hair back brunette because my hair has so much breakage and is coarse and dry. Nothing has helped. I have so much damage that i am past K18 working. But i have started oiling 24hrs before i wash. I not only use the oil you recommend but i also apply OGX Coconut Split end mender, then throughout the day i apply the OGX hydrating Coconut oil mist. My hair is so dry that it just sucks it up. This process makes my hair, after washing, silky and look healthy...which at this point i know its not...yet. You ma'am, have helped me so much. My confidence has been shattered bc my hair has been suffering, and your advice has been a saving grace for me. Thank you so much❤
Coconut oil makes my hair stiff and causes breakage but I would bet this OGX product barely contains Coconut oil. Licensed cosmetologist here. I love silicone
fine, I’ll try the coconut oil 🙄 consider me influenced. i have a question not related to oil tho. I have bald spots on the sides of my forehead, and it’s also thinning on the top. (I think it’s due to a hormonal imbalance + stress but anyways) if I use minoxidil, would I damage my hair? would it interfere with my hair care? im worried
Coconut oil is good for people with high porosity hair. If you have low porosity hair, there's other options for you (jojoba, argan, almond...). Low porosity hair don't have the ability to absorb the amount of hydration that coconut oil provides, it instead dries your hair (if you use pure coconut oil) because it sits on top, or make them very greasy (if you use pre-made hair oils with coconut inside on your mids and ends). I would've liked to hear that when I used to watch all these videos to understand how to take care of my hair. Besides, even with an oily scalp, hair oiling may be beneficial. I, personally went from 2 to 3 days in between washes. And no, you can't keep oil overnight on your scalp. Please guys, check other channels here on youtube of dermatologists and hairdressers and check if the given information is actually right 😅 (I am also sorry for any mistake, English is not my first language).
I have been following your for a while and we have very similar hair. I have been doing your routine for about a year now and my hair has gotten so much better! However, I am glad you are doing this video because we differ as far as scalp is concerned. My scalp is dry and you say yours off oily. Glad to have more info about possibly bringing the oils up to my roots. Hopefully this will help my flake problem! Thank you!
Hi Abbey, thank you for the great videos and your informed advice. I have a question that I hope you could answer for your followers please? If you follow the hair oiling routine using products like the OGX Coconut Miracle Oil Penetrating Oil, can your conditioner (Amika The Kure or similar) still penetrate the hair after all the silicones have been distributed? Even after washing the OGX out properly, it seems like the whole idea of using silicones and oils is to coat the hair shaft. I'm also a bit confused about how the oils in OGX, for example, can penetrate the hair in the presence of the silicones listed first on the ingredient list. I understand why you wouldn't use the hair oiling routine before using the K-18 bond repair because you need it to penetrate the hair so what might be the difference between that and a conditioner filled with great ingredients? I apologize if you have addressed this in another video (I've watched so many now but certainly not all of them). Appreciate your thoughts on this! Dana
i actually think the brushing with oil myth comes from the idea that the hair is more fragile with oil in it (like how the hair is most fragile when wet with water) so people think oil = hair is wet = hair is fragile. but i don’t think ppl realize that the reason hair is fragile when wet has to do with the shaft swelling which i’m assuming is not the case when it is coated with oil. what are your thoughts on that? love your videos i’m addicted to watching them😊
Thank you for the helpful video. You mentioned that you sprayed Epres on your hair til damp, applied oil, waited 30+ minutes, and shampooed. You said that you didn’t oil if you were going to do a k-18 treatment, because the k-18 would not be able to properly penetrate oil-treated hair. You also said that you were told that the Epres treatment would compliment the K-18 treatment. Does this mean that you can use the Epres pre-shampoo, shampoo, and then apply the k-18, or or does the Epres block the K-18 as the oiling would if used the same day? Do you just use the Epres on days that you oil your hair pre-shampoo (and therefore skipping the K-18)? Thank you!
I'd find it really helpful if you could do a deep dive on low porosity hair products, specifically for wavy hair but that might be a bit niche. It's just the wavy hair products seem to be mainly high porosity & the curly low porosity hair products don't work.
Hey Abbey! I think I know why people were asking about hair shed with oiling their hair. I have the same problem when I oil my entire scalp. I used to oil my scalp and I would find that I had massive shedding when brushing after putting oil on my scalp. Now that I don't put oil on my scalp, I don't have this problem anymore.
Do these steps still work if you have shorter hair? My hair was so damaged I cut it. So it only goes to a little longer than my chin. So it's basically all root 😂. So I do find the oiling process hard due to the length of my hair. Should I just skip the oiling step? Love your channel! So informative, gives me so much hope for my hair, and great tips!
Dear Abbey - Great video! Super helpful deep dive into hair oiling. I would love a deep dive in how you use your bond repair products. Due to your recommendations I have purchased K-18, Redken acidic bonding concentrate, Living Proof triple bond complex and dp Hue Gloss +. The directions for some of these K-18 and Redken are different than how you use them (or my understand of how you use them.) I would love a deep dive into your bonding treatment routine. Thanks for all your great content! -Daniela
OMG K18 3-4x a month not 3-4x a week 😂
😂😂 I figured but had to be sure because I’m following your exact routine! Thank you, you’re amazing!
I was wondering 🤣🤣
Where can you get k18

I never invested in hair care because I always knew that hair is dead and can’t be repaired (fact) so that’s why I trimmed my hair soooo often
FYI I have been using the Elvive coconut oil, which is cheap AF where I live compared to the OGX ones.
What shampoo do you use when washing out the oil?
I’ve been oiling with pumpkin seed oil! Pumpkin seeds are a natural source of biotin, and antioxidants magnesium, zinc and phosphorus. It’s also rich in linoleic acid (fatty acids) and it has anti androgen properties, meaning it can treat hair loss for those with androgenic alopecia!
Interesting! Has it been helping or is it a new addition to your routine?
Name and location to buy please 😊
@@julieme7927I think it’s been helping! I take it in capsule form as a supplement and I have a bottle of cold pressed pumpkin seed oil to use on my hair and skin. Another tip for getting the oil out - condition, THEN shampoo twice, then deep condition.
I find the conditioner helps remove the oil!
This actually works! I read this recommendation on reddit and this idea the way I wash out oils from my hair ever since.
I do this!!!!! Heavy oil…and condition as step 1 (i usually let sit 15-30 min) i detangle as it rinses…shampoo twice…then deep condition

It really does. Oil removes oil!

Hell I've used the jar coconut oil before and it's not that hard to wash out haha
I literally just bought the Palmers coconut hair oil yesterday! It has the exact same ingredients as OGX but it's cheaper.

Awww thank you so much! And please keep me posted on your hair journey!! So exciting to see some improvement after bleach damage!
The OGX coconut oil does not have argan oil in it. Maybe the ingredients were updated?
I’ve thrown the towel in with the curly girl method and felt my hair was never clean or soft! I’ve finally got Pantene and the ogx coconut oil and bam! My hair is soft and shiny for the first time in years and years! My hair fall has subsided and my curls are soft and bouncy! I’m so glad I’m “allowed” to use these regular products again. My hair feels and looks the best it has in decades.
What Pantene products do you use?
Do you oil your hair before washing? I’ve been doing a wavy hair routine but I’m worried that the oil will prevent washing buildup from curl cream and gel
@@alisonhagen6704 I use too and I am now thinking that because I wasn’t using a sulphate shampoo my hair was never properly clean
I was also a CGM “believer” and it’s sad that it was so limiting. Also very manipulative to say that your hair just “needs to get used to it”.
I use just the moisture pantene or I look for that cone she talks about in the her videos. I also oil my hair regularly, because I have course hair I need a little bit everyday but in saying that I also had more before shampooing.
I started using OGX penetrating coconut oil on my coarse wavy/curly hair and it’s made my hair look and feel super healthy. And it smells fantastic
I just wrap my hair in cling film and then put a thick warm hat on to help the oil do its job.
I've started using a satin bonnet recently and it's so nice to now wake up when I roll over at night and have to pull my hair out from under me.
LOVE this suggestion as I’ve been hesitant to try this OGX oil for both these reasons! Thanks!
The bonnet gave me forehead pimples like crazy
I have used the coconut oil and L’Oreal Bond Strengthening concentrate pre-shampoo treatment (free sample) only 3x, and my hair texture has already MASSIVELY improved! Great advice! My locks are finally soft and not straw like!
I just bought these exact items. Do you put the pre-shampoo, wait the 5-10 minutes and then put in the coconut oil? And how long do you leave everything until you wash it? I’m still learning 😊
@@jodieubanks2479 I usually do them back to back. And usually leave it in 10-30 mins. It really just depends.
Did you use the elvive one or the everpure one? Both products are called bond repair (couldn’t find anything under the name of “bond strengthening”)

Thanks! What is solid conditioning?
Did you do the ACV rinse at the end of your shower? Like after shampoo and conditioner or before?

@@sillygoose420 i just edited my comment. Bc i agree, argan one is amazing, coconut oil one dries my hair. But my hair doesn’t like coconut oil,
I love using coconut oil by itself between washes on my ends, and it seems to work better for me in the summer (maybe because it actually melts on my hands then lol). I have the ogx extra penetrating argan oil which I like for my ends, haven't been able to find the ogx coconut miracle oil in person (maybe because you've made it so popular!)

but that OGX oil is just silicone, literally. they just use coconut oil as a marketing claim in super tiny amounts. it's a silicone serum that serves as a finishing touch after heat-styling. coconut oil on the other hand is indeed a hair favorite as pre-poo, it simply prevents damage by soaking the hair, as it's pure saturated fat (triglycerides of saturated fatty acids).
I agree. But it could be the formulation that helps her. OGX products did nothing for me.

Great video, I love the thorough explanation and reasoning for each step. I too did a lot of research on which oil is scientifically proven to actually work (surprised to find that most recommended oils aren't).

Dang it Abbey.

I have low porosity hair and cannot use coconut, olive or castor oil! I stick to lightweight oils like almond, argan and grape seed.
@@knowninhighplaces ...and for dry tipps i use moringa oil!
@zekaay thanks for clarification but I don't use either. Just post shower ogx coconut milk serum
Wait, so no, you shouldn’t use K18 after oiling? I’m new to following her and I’m a little overwhelmed with all of this.
@JustCallMeCB you should use a clarifying shampoo for the first wash and any other shampoo and conditioner, just not the K18
Hi! Can you pls do an updated hair was routine and products? Would love to see this from beginning to end. Thanks! Love your content!
OGX CMO ALL DAY!!!!!!!!!! You SAVED my tresses' and I'm forever grateful and the smell.....Straight bliss!! Love when I do wash that it feels like I already conditioned my ends. At 42 yrs. I recently was told my hair looks like little girl hair...ya know how our hair is when we are itty bitty, before all the playing and damage we inflict. BEST COMPLIMENT EVER I knew exactly what she was getting at!! YOU 🎀AY 🎀 are my 🙌hair goddess 🙌and master at explaining hair science and chemistry. We ( my locks and I) are forever grateful to you and your passion & diligence on all things hair. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
If you come across anything about LED therapy for hair, please pass along. There seem to be a bunch of newer hair combs and helmets using microcurrent and LED. I’m more interested in using them as a preventative measure to keep my hair relatively healthy. Think they are mostly geared toward people with thinning hair.
I use coconut oil mixed with castor oil before every hair wash, I find it really beneficial 😊
Yay to getting rid of the coconut oil is bad myth 😂🎉
I have a combo scalp it gets really oily but also can get dandruff - oil (not coconut) on my roots before showering has been a game changer because the oil sticks to the oil I find that my hair doesn’t get as oily throughout the week when I do this.
This was so so helpful!! I have been oiling my hair per your recommendation for some time now and I am loving my results.
Same here, wish I could use OGX coconut oil but not cruelty free 😢
I use virgin coconut oil straight out of the jar for pre-shampoo and it works perfectly for my hair, every time!
Nothing is cruelty free. Hate to burst that bubble. Lol
I'm cruelty free too and I just use regular coconut oil too ❤😊
@Vampirita447 u ever hear of minimizing harm ??? Not tested on animals??? That's cruelty free hun
I used the OGX coconut oil and I have fine, low-porosity hair and after using it a couple of months on my ends before washing, I kept finding my ends became very dry. I was wondering why and realized the only thing I changed was the coconut oil. I threw it away and just use a different oil and that’s working wayyyyy better for me
Which oil do you use now?
@@e.4124 I tried using castor oil watered down before putting it in my hair. I’ve found better results using a conditioner. I started doing conditioner masks at night instead of oil masks and my hair looks and feels amazing! I wouldn’t leave on in with keratin or other protein based ones because that’s bad for your hair to leave overnight
I love how knowledgeable you are, I know it’s touchy but I would love to see what your thoughts are on Elle bangs.
In Brazil, we use a cheap conditioner or mask to help to remove vegetable oil before the shampoo. Following this
reasoning, that's why i believe vegetable oils are also good for oily scalps: after all, OIL REMOVES OIL, water don't - that's science guys!
Love the OGX oil and smells amazing great recommendation Abby!!
@@daniellemc1023thank you!!
Hey! I just started using hair oil so I'm excited to see how it works for my hair. My question for you is, what is the best way to style your hair while you sleep? I mean is it better to leave it down, in a loose bun, in a loose braid. Thanks!!
Are you going to film an updated hair wash routine since it’s been over a year now?
Hello everyone, I just want to share that I have super fine, thin hair at the moment and I initially did order the serum spray version verses the miracle oil Abbey was saying could be too heavy for our hair type and it did work BUT I did try the miracle oil and I just think everyone should know that if you sleep with it in, it is workable for fine, thin, hair - vs. 30 minutes prior to washing. I tried it both ways and it was definitely too heavy to use if I only gave it 30 minutes but if I sleep in it, it works just fine!
That cheap coconut oil did more than several k18 leave in bottles I purchased. 🙊
Same here!
I love the ogx oil, I just wish they had an unscented version, im SO sensitive to scent and it can sometime trigger awful migraines for me.
Argan oil and rosemary has helped me so much!! I’ll have to try coconut. I was more afraid of that oil for some reason
What about swimming? Wet hair with epres before swimming or is that a waste of epres.
I’ve heard wet your hair before swimming so that your hair absorbs regular water and not chlorine.
Would you wet your hair and then oil, and THEN jump in the pool???
girl unrelated but can we talk about your lip gloss, it's so reflective!!!
Thank you so much❤
A video on how to repair hair from heat damage would be great !
Please guys, check other channels here on youtube of dermatologists and hairdressers and check if the given information is actually right 😅
(I am also sorry for any mistake, English is not my first language).
She doesn’t put the oil in scalp.
It doesn't suit all high porosity hair. My hair is bleached and therefore high porosity and it dries and breaks with coconut oil.
So excited I just ordered espres hope it keeps giving me good results just like all of abbeys advice ❤
Dana
hi abbey! would love an update hair wash/style routine esp bc you now wash it twice a week! also a new appt tour!💗
i actually think the brushing with oil myth comes from the idea that the hair is more fragile with oil in it (like how the hair is most fragile when wet with water) so people think oil = hair is wet = hair is fragile. but i don’t think ppl realize that the reason hair is fragile when wet has to do with the shaft swelling which i’m assuming is not the case when it is coated with oil. what are your thoughts on that?
love your videos i’m addicted to watching them😊
Yaaaaassssss , I've been waiting for this video !! Love you abbey!! ❤
Great educational video, thank you
I have a video suggestion: in between 2 washes care for dry damaged hair .
Can you do a video about seb derm and foliculitus?? It's driving me crazy! Have been dealing with both since dealing with peri-menopause.
-Daniela
So happy to see this video! I love Epres and can't wait to use both!!! Thank you for this!!
