I liked this video a lot! It's a bit frustrating for people who are into haircare to hear that whether a product is good or bad for them comes down to unique user experience, because we all want clear easy rules we can follow, but the reality is that it's too complex to make large general recommendations like "no sulfates". The only thing I didn't like is the chemist seemed to be advocating a lot for just believing in the claims on the bottle because "in a world where everyone is ethical" but unfortunately, I don't feel like we live in that world. I believe the formulation chemists are ethical, but I don't necessarily believe all the marketing is transparent. For example: A product may be formulated to be a leave in conditioner but also contains an ingredient that is only mildly effective for heat protection in a low concentration. On the label, that nuance is lost though and just becomes "a leave in conditioner AND heat protectant!". That said, I guess that's why it comes down to user experience in the end. Unless every product comes with a detailed explanation of the intended goals when formulated, the consumer will never know until they try it.
True! I’ve seen “heat protectant” on a lot of leave-ins, but I doubt they’re as good as my “can resist up to 450 degrees” heat protectants! And I’ve had hair oils which my hair soaked up, but also oils that really coat the hair smoothly OR even making it more rough. It’s something I now know by experiencing it, but it would be nice to know these things before buying them😅
I think that was in Regards to the question of "which ingredients to look for between gentle shampoo and clarifying shampoo" I don't think it was about the claims the company makes, just if it's a clarifying shampoo or not.

Super impressed with this sensible science vlog. Personally I do change my shampoos through rotation but it's certainly reassuring to know these chemists are ahead of the game 🎯
This was a super helpful video, thanks so much! I was hoping she’d talk about shampoos that don’t strip color-treated hair. I tend to get brassy easily and my color tends to fade quickly. I’m getting it colored again this weekend and I want to preserve the $$$ baylayage for as long as possible.
I was hoping for that too! But I find these 3 things that REALLY help. Been dying my hair for 35 years 😂 No sulfates (I use a VERY effective cleansing conditioner! I can still go 2 weeks in between washing 😊 Lemme know if you want info.) Don’t use hot water on your hair in shower! If using sulfates, wash as infrequently as possible, and use “for color treated” only.
The Beauty Brains cosmetic chemist podcast says just getting your hair wet causes color loss, and that's before you get started in shampoo. They advise to wash your hair as little as possible, use dry shampoo to help you extend time between washes.
GOD BLESS BOTH OF YOU 🩵🩵🩵 knowledge is power- especially in the age of fear mongering around ingredients- I rely on experts like her and amazing influencers like you to break through the noise and keep me properly informed ❤ love you so much!!!! 💗💗💗 Part 2.. 3 and 4? So formaldehyde is bad but what about formaldehyde releasing ingredients such as Imidazolidinyl urea, and Diazolidinyl urea? Should hair products with these ingredients be avoided as well?
I have learned so much from two chemists on The Beauty Brains podcast. Valerie and Perry. They cover hair and cosmetics. They have saved me so much money. Love this kind of content.
That's just how it is with science, very few things are a clear cut yes/no, black and white type on thing. Science exists mostly in the grey areas, unlike clickbait fear-mongering tiktoks.
We need someone who addresses aging ( over 50) hair, thinning hair loss snd hair breakage for us. Not all of us in our 50s have the same hair as these two ladies in their 20s or 30s.
I’m with you 😊. I started seeing a Dermatologist and Biotin vitamins were recommended for hair loss. It doesn’t work for everyone but it worked for me. My hair stopped falling out. However the aging process with menopause will cause hair loss. A hormone replacement therapy may be needed for women over 50 to help with hair loss and other health issues. Not washing your hair and having a dirty scalp is asking for a major problem like fungal infection causing hair loss. Fungal infections are hard to treat. My Dermatologist has seen many patients with hair loss due to fungal infections from not washing hair often enough or as needed. It’s a fad now to not wash your hair as necessary. Healthy scalp healthy hair. Anyhow I’ve learned a lot. My hair is no longer falling out. Peace. ❤❤❤🌸🌸🌸
Hi! Thanks for the video and the expertise. I am tempted to add mine, if I may, as a pharmacist. I think in theory there can be ingredients in shampoos that can promote hairgrowth! Although I think it is debated if the small time that the shampoo is in contact with the scalp can make a difference. I am thinking of products similar then minoxidil (and i think even rosmary), i.e. products that stimulate the blood vessels in the scalp. The reasoning is that if there goes more blood to the follicles, it grows faster. Minoxidil is scientifically proven (it was a side effect of another purpose it was used for). Anyway, but i wouldn't apply it via shampoo but more as a serum to have a better take up. Keep up the good work girls!
Minoxidil comes with side effects that can effect your insides, like your heart, etc. So not safe. But up to the person if they are willing to take that risk
I would really love to hear your professional opinion on vegamor or Monat. I hear SO many mixed and biased opinions, but don’t know if they’re actually good or not! Love you
I love this and so appreciate the time of both of you very knowledgeable ladies. My issue is I am overwhelmed with where to start to find what I need. I don’t know if I’ll make sense… but. All this great information does it apply to all hair textures? How do I know it’ll benefit me if I have very different hair than you two girls? Is anyone doing research for people with kinky hair? Or that all falls under the same category?
I don't know how many European viewers are here, but wanted to leave this message from a simple laymen - user of beauty products: I have just discovered that Pantene has come out with an official bond repair line (it has bond-repair written on the label), and so far I can speak for the shampoo, it smells great - not too strong though, hair is soft and manageable ( I have wavy 3A-2B hair). I am so glad I have found your channel, I am slowly transitioning back to being able to buy drugstore products ( healing from buying "special brands" online only) - thank you so much for making scientific videos, I trust science and this makes me trust you :)

Thank you for this video! I feel a relief now that I don't need to stand in an aisle for 30 minutes reading labels and freaking out because of all the false info out there.
Great interview, common sense! Backed by chemist’s knowledge.. alternate non sulfate with gentle cleaners shampoos, not necessarily $$$ .. good stuff at drugstore and old school salon products likel Paul Mitchell nexus etc social media isn’t all true.. beauty industry isn’t regulated so they can claim all kinds of stuff..use what makes your hair feel good TO YOU.. wash hair enough to keep scalp clean 😊
As a curly hair black woman, I see so many vdeos of UA-camrs slathering so much product on their hair. I haven't been doing that because where I live haircare products are costly. But with my hair type it's been working for me to not slather so much product.
I knew ingredients in Shampoos were safe, I use Old spice shampoo, has Sulfates and Silicones. Been using those for a long time, hair looks great, no build up. Just can't listen to those people demonizing certain ingredients! Very informative video here😉
My experience with shampoos is drugstore shampoos and shampoos with steong surfactants like sulfates cause a lot of hair shedding and eventually hair loss while shampoos that promote hair growth are in general gentler which dont lead to much hair fall on wash day. Any thoughts about this ?
You could test this theory out. Go 1 week with your go to shampoo and save ALL of your hair. The stuff in the drain, your brushes, and other areas that collect your hair strands. Label what shampoo was used. Then go to the other shampoo and do all the same as the previous week. Compare the amounts at the end of the week. If you find that other shampoo is really removing more hair then it's too harsh for you and might be better suited for more course, thick, dense hair.
1st I absolutely LOVE your channel and I just came across this video and OMG man I needed this video so bad and it helped me so much. Ive been looking for just a "regular shampoo" for just a once a week wash and on my other wash day im using K18 and now I have just came across Redken acidic color gloss and I really liked it but I've only used it once. I want some really good shine. Im in peri-menopause and my hair has just changed and just want some moisture and shine!!! Thank you Abbey for this and all your videos!! You are doing everything AMAZING and you look beautiful doing it sister!!!!!!!
This was such a great video. I have only been following for about a month and im binging all the information. My fave part is the dose makes the poison and the remedy. Brilliant. I use all affordable drugstore products. My hair is doing great i think. I just stick with what works for me rather than worrying about prices. I just started a channel to promote hair health and appreciation and just taking the time to listen to our hair needs. 😊❤😊❤
Lots of "it depends." What are examples of mild surfactants vs stronger ones (so we know what to look for on labels)? Same question with silicones. Also, it seems this information is mostly applied to straight hair. For example, curly/wavy hair won't be able to curl as easily if heavy silicones are coating hair (bc water can't get in - which is needed for curl). Lastly, it's important to consider the environment with the products we use. Parabens have shown potential to bioaccumulate. I prefer to avoid so as not to contribute to the problem. There are SO many good products without them.
I thought 30 minutes was going to be too long to watch, but once I started watching, there was so much great content! Very cool video, it really cemented some ideas for me and ditched a few others. I'm gonna keep my high citric acid shampoo (at least, it's high on the ingredient list, but who knows what the percentage is lol).
Awesome video! I do have a random question that might be very ignorant. Do guys (or girls) with very short hair use conditioner to counteract that charge?
Id be curious about how does protein affect the hair? I see people talk about protein overload. But we need to know whats right. Lol. Basically protein overload vs moisture. And moisture overload too 😂
Are proteins something to avoid for fine/thin hair? Rumor is that proteins are bad for “low porosity” or finer hair types and can cause ends to become dry/break off. Would love to know your thoughts on this!!🩷
I really loved this video, it was so informative and useful! I'm following your recommendations about hair care, hoping for being able to restore my damaged bleached blond hair.
Love all your videos!!❤ And i was wondering since you’re a trichologist in training I would like too know your thoughts on nioxin shampoo or Rogaine? Have you tried those product?
Regarding “shampoo or cleansing cycling”, like skin care, I find that I do change my products seasonally. I have been growing my hair out for quite some time and it is now below my collarbone. I started using Ouai, because I needed to use multiple products on my hair. I cleanse every 10 to 12 days. I only use Ouai on my scalp and then Maui Shea butter on the rest of my hair. Abbe, I cannot thank you enough for all the tips, tricks and advice you give us. ❤❤ FYI, I now cannot apply mascara without blinking with each swipe 😘😘😘
This is really interesting! I know a lot about skin and skincare but when it comes to hair I feel like I know nothing, so it's great to get all the info via your videos :)
There was no questions about dry shampoo. Many people say it causes hairloss , there were even recalls on some dry shamppos. Would of been intresting what she would of recommended.
I disagree with the parabens conversation. I didn't pay attention to this sensitive ingredient until I found at 27 years old, I developed an allergy to them. My skin was wrecked, and had to work with a derm to fix it. I learned that excess use of sensitive ingredients over a long time can often develop allergies to it. That it's fairly common for this to happen. I recommend younger people to continue to be wary to reduce their chances of developing allergies to generalized sensitive ingredients. Itchy skin allergies are no fun, esp when it's unexpected :/
Thank you for sharing this interview! So much misinformation out there especially with the “natural” product community. I’ve seen a lot of people using soap instead of shampoo (Dr Bronners) but that seems way too harsh for the hair. Please comment. Thanks!
Actual soap (as in saponified fats rather than detergents) is harsher than any other surfactant used for shampoos, and it also deposits a very unpleasant soap scum on your hair (and everything else it touches) when it interacts with water that's not pure (so reverse osmosis or distilled). I would never use real soap because it's so unpleasant, but the soap scum is also a deal breaker for me.
Can you please review Viori shampoo and conditioner bars? I’ve been using these for about a year. And Omg co wash! I literally have used regular conditioner and massaged it into my hair and it removes the oil! But I does get greasy faster.
She wasn't that informative. She basically told people to chill out about the hyped "bad" ingredients and the only real info was on formaldehyde in straightening and keratin products. Other than that she just babbled a lot of nothing saying it all depends. Which it does. But this could have been better. The title of this video made it seem way more informative than it actually was. Girl, stop messing around and get into it.
That was so interesting! Have not been using olaplex much anymore and been using the redken acidic bonding shampoo and conditioner and I was just thinking like how could it possibly be bond repairing so her explanation was so interesting

Hello. I have a question, is it true that we should dry our hair with a hair dryer and not let it air dry? According to 2 dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis and Dr. Mislankar stated that there is a paper stating that we must use a dryer and not let it air dry because it's not good for our hair? Please advise if this is true. Thank you!
Hi Abbey, I have a question that is driving me crazy. Does pre shampoo oil treatments prevent bond treatment from penetrating the ends? I know I shouldn't shampoo my ends loads but after oiling I want to make sure my k18 works effectively! I only wash oce a week so I prefer to do both during the same wash. Any advice would be great :)
I personally only use scalp oil when I do K18! because it can lessen the effect of the k18 - and then use on ends when I clarify, because then the shampoo can take it away
Can a detangling/conditioning spray act as a conditioner or do you also need an in shower conditioner? Sometimes I just dont feel like taking the extra min in the shower for conditioner and do the spray one after.
I wonder if I should only buy bond repair treatment and conditioner and not shampoo. Cause shampoo is really for removing build up and cleansing… so why get one that is pricier with supposed special benefits?
PLEASE do one with her about all of the bond repair treatments and the science behind them.
Yes!!!

It’s something I now know by experiencing it, but it would be nice to know these things before buying them😅
Some marketing claims on products are pseudoscience driven eg a product with tiny amounts of plant oils and calling it "UV protection"
I think that was in Regards to the question of "which ingredients to look for between gentle shampoo and clarifying shampoo" I don't think it was about the claims the company makes, just if it's a clarifying shampoo or not.
We need MORE videos like this! So tired of fear mongering around the hair and beauty community ❤❤❤❤
We need a sunscreen version of this!! So much controversy about chemical filters specifically!
I use the sunscreen that I know I'll actually use lol. And that's the aveeno protect and hydrate "chemical" sunscreen. They say it's oxyb...I'm not sure how it's spelled but I assume it's a "bad" sunscreen ingredient.
@@tianamarie989 oxybenzone and yup, that’s how it should be. i cant find a non greasy chemical one but i’m looking. i’m having to find a middle ground between whitecast and greaseball 😂
I wish she would've asked about chelating shampoo ingredients and how they remove hard water buildup.
Awesome video! About the formaldehyde topic, there are some keratin treatments that claim to be Formaldehyde free and use glyoxylic acid, than what are your thoughts about this statement “Glyoxylic acid both releases formaldehyde when heated and is converted into either glycine by AGT1 (alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase 1) or oxalate by glycolate oxidase in the human cell peroxisomes [4]. Formaldehyde is a colorless aldehyde poisonous gas at room temperature [5].Jul 11, 2022
I know it's different but issues like this are why I won't use magic erasers. I just don't trust the stability of the melamine.
Hi Abbey, I really enjoyed this video, it answered a lot of questions. Thank you for having her on.
Yesss! I love this type of education. We need more of this. Also, I love the puppy noises and interruption going on in this. We need more puppy attention in your videos, Abbey!
Can you tell me what have you learned beside it depends and if it works for you go for it, things that your grandma probably told you too.
Super impressed with this sensible science vlog. Personally I do change my shampoos through rotation but it's certainly reassuring to know these chemists are ahead of the game 🎯
You little ray of sunshine! So happy when your videos come up!
🥰🥰 thanks for watching!
I use a clarifying shampoo once a month, however I wash my hair 2x a week and always do 2 shampoos with a gentle shampoo, so hopefully that’s enough
“I go where the science takes me.” 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Obsessed. More interviews with chemists pls 😍😍😍 And now a new follower of Alex!!
Been dying my hair for 35 years 😂
No sulfates (I use a VERY effective cleansing conditioner! I can still go 2 weeks in between washing 😊 Lemme know if you want info.)
Don’t use hot water on your hair in shower!
If using sulfates, wash as infrequently as possible, and use “for color treated” only.
@TrinaGallo I am interested in that shampoo name you use. 7 days is my max between washes😢.
Check out a shampoo called Color Wow Security Shampoo
The Beauty Brains cosmetic chemist podcast says just getting your hair wet causes color loss, and that's before you get started in shampoo. They advise to wash your hair as little as possible, use dry shampoo to help you extend time between washes.
GOD BLESS BOTH OF YOU 🩵🩵🩵 knowledge is power- especially in the age of fear mongering around ingredients- I rely on experts like her and amazing influencers like you to break through the noise and keep me properly informed ❤ love you so much!!!! 💗💗💗 Part 2.. 3 and 4?
Would love to have had a video surrounding ALL haircare- not just shampoo? 🙏🏻
I appreciate you bringing on an expert. Seems like most answers were “it depends” but generally informative.
The fact that my hair is gotten healthy because these two women and now they’re doing a video together is mind blowing 🥹✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I would really love to hear your professional opinion on vegamor or Monat. I hear SO many mixed and biased opinions, but don’t know if they’re actually good or not! Love you
Yes, would love to hear about Vegamor. I want to purchase it but the mixed reviews has me unsure.
I love this and so appreciate the time of both of you very knowledgeable ladies.
My issue is I am overwhelmed with where to start to find what I need. So Abby your content of trying stuff and telling us your thoughts helps me narrow down. Even though my hair is much shorter and drier (older) than yours. Thanks again!
Alex, please take Abbey to try some arepas and cachapas! She will thank us later! LOL! Both are great separately but together was EPIC!!! So happy with this collaboration!❤
I don’t know if I’ll make sense… but. All this great information does it apply to all hair textures? How do I know it’ll benefit me if I have very different hair than you two girls? Is anyone doing research for people with kinky hair? Or that all falls under the same category?
That's the problem...there's not much research done on our hair. A lot of the stuff she said is across the board though.
Please Do a Review about Gisou hair products! I don’t think I see a video from you about their line yet. But maybe I missed it. 🙏🏽
Such a helpful video with great information, thank you!
This was such a great video!! Please do another one with her! So much knowledge and information.
I loved that video! It was very informative and cleared up a lot of things I was thinking about haircare! Also Abbey your dog is SO CUTE!🥰
Thank you for this video. The content was extremely valuable to those of us struggling to parse out facts from marketing.
Love this video! Love your content! Just wanted to pop on to say that an option to keep your pup occupied while you film could be some sort of enrichment activity! Like a frozen kong, but also she is always welcomed to be in your vudeos!
I wish this worked 😫 I have tried just about everything & she’ll do it for about 5 minutes and then come back to just wanting to play with me! I now have her in daycare a few times a week which has been amazing for her to get even more play time 🩷
@Abbey Yung aw I feel ya! I figured you probably already gave it a go, but I wasn't sure 😆 yay for daycare, we have one we like too! It's legit like a day off for me when she goes 😁
so glad you did this collab!
Yeah I see that too. They use half a jar of deep conditioner in one session.😂
I love Alexandra! Such a great duo!
I knew ingredients in Shampoos were safe, I use Old spice shampoo, has Sulfates and Silicones. Been using those for a long time, hair looks great, no build up. Just can't listen to those people demonizing certain ingredients! Very informative video here😉
From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Your dog is getting so big! What a cutie!
I’m laughing so hard listening to Elsie going nuts with paper in the background 😂😭
Great video, so informative and I hope a lot of people see this, so they will better understand the chemistry behind this topic 😀❤️
This was so good, I love Alexandra! Thanks for a great Q & A 🙏💞
Lots of "it depends." What are examples of mild surfactants vs stronger ones (so we know what to look for on labels)? Same question with silicones. Also, it seems this information is mostly applied to straight hair. For example, curly/wavy hair won't be able to curl as easily if heavy silicones are coating hair (bc water can't get in - which is needed for curl). Lastly, it's important to consider the environment with the products we use. Parabens have shown potential to bioaccumulate. I prefer to avoid so as not to contribute to the problem. There are SO many good products without them.
Love the video but gotta say Elsie has gotten so big! So cute!
I cannot believe you guys collaborated 😱🇻🇪 love both of your guys’ content. Loved every about this collab!
This was aoooo informative, WOW! Amazing. I look forward to more chitchat between two ladies.!!’
I’m a lurker follower👀👀but want to say thank you for the effort that went into this video!! It’s so informative!
Awesome video!
I do have a random question that might be very ignorant. Do guys (or girls) with very short hair use conditioner to counteract that charge?
Super excited for this video!!!
Amazing this video!!! I neeeed to know how you darkened your hair! Love this colour on you!
Yesssss been looking forward to this!😃
This is really interesting! I know a lot about skin and skincare but when it comes to hair I feel like I know nothing, so it's great to get all the info via your videos :)
I feel like im the opposite.. im a hair freak but uses body soap and lotion for my face 😂
She was so informative. Loved it!
Great video, informative and fun.
i love how you take haircare so seriously, the way you use scientific approach is just 👌
Abbey and Alexandria?! I follow both of you on Instagram and tiktok and I loved this collaboration video, it's definitely just what I needed today 💖💖
I gotta agree with you and I watched the whole thing.😑
Hi Abbey, This was such an informative and helpful video to watch 💕.
So glad to hear that ❤
Very informative video. I feel it was insensitive to laugh at the questions people asked. They may be silly to you but not to them? ❤
Love this!! So informative ❤ Once again, thank you 😊
24:49 Is Isopropyl alcohol bad for hair since it's a drying alcohol?
5:36 .... best part of video! "The dose is the poison". We all need to digest that.
Fantastic video, so informative, well done 🎉
That was so interesting! Have not been using olaplex much anymore and been using the redken acidic bonding shampoo and conditioner and I was just thinking like how could it possibly be bond repairing so her explanation was so interesting
PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO OF LOREAL PRO LONGER HAIR MASK, there's not a lot of info bout that products on UA-cam. And I'm a bleached blonde asian who needs helpppp
Great interview! I have curly hair and wash my hair every 5-7 days, my scalp isn’t oily. Is it okay to was infrequently?
Love this vid!!
Great collaboration! Thank you.
Great informative video, thank you ❤
Thank you!
Part 2 please. Even more. 🙂
The best shampoo I've ever used had a silicone high in the list. My hair is easily dried the hell out simply by cleansing, no matter what the shampoo
What an awesome video, thank you both!
What is your opinion on Monday shampoo and conditioners?
I just gotta say how cute it is that you two were fan girls of each other and didn't even know it lol 💖
