Oh my goodness that last tip though 😂 It’s too relatable. After my grandma passed, you better believe I went to the salon with my naturally black hair and asked for Kim K’s icy blonde with black root look. 8 hours later, I’m still at the salon and exhausted and I say to my stylist “gosh, how does she have the time for this all the time??” And my stylist laughed and said “you know it’s a wig right?” Anyways here we are 5 years later and I’m still coping with the damage it caused. But at least my research led to me to this channel! 😂 ❤
Omg every stylist I’ve been to has always yanked through my soaking wet hair, not starting at the ends, and before applying leave ins and then being sooo aggressive with their round brushes when drying!! Ever since watching your videos it makes me cringe when they do it 😅😅 thank you for sharing such important information on all your channels!!
I agree with you 100% I have no idea why so many STYLISTS and I'm sorry to bash them but there are some HORRIBLE STYLISTS out there they take the towel and rub it ALL over your HEAD HARD then they whip the comb through your head or brush I personally think if STYLIST starts to do that and they don't want to listen to what you're saying I think you should get out of the chair and WALK AWAY RUN AWAY because to me they're NOT a good STYLIST if that's how they're going to do your HAIR and they haven't even started cutting yet which also brings me to SCISSOR HAPPY STYLISTS ugh another scary situation and a WHOLE nother conversation that I have OCD and TRAUMA from now ugh😔
I relate to this so much! WHY do they do it like that?? They're supposed to know what's good for hair right? Or do they want to damage it right away after the trim so that you're already set for the next visit? Lmao Seriously when they do it it makes me want to just get up and walk out
Your tip on being gentle with your hair is the one that has made the best difference for me! I don’t get my hair colored or use a lot of heat, so for me the biggest source of damage is mechanical on my fine hair. I can really tell a difference by brushing and styling more carefully!
It really makes all the difference in the world. I started this a while back because my hair was getting somewhat damaged, but already quite long and it makes such a difference!
The best hair of my life was during the pandemic. I washed it every 3 days, let it air dry and used no heat or highlights. It grew like a weed and I didn’t have one single split end in sight!
Same here 😂 my over processed dyed hair was never happier! I think that’s the first time in my life after the 8th grade that I rocked an air dried hairstyle in public
I’ve done that for the past 5 years and idk if I’m comparing to those w better genetics but mine just keeps getting split ends 😞 following this channel now to help out with this😅
I have silver/platinum bleached blonde hair (done at a salon of course), so breakage and damage is inevitable for me. Though I find that a lot of the tips and product recs you have given has still helped sooo much! My hair has never been this long and 'healthy' during my 4 years as a platinum blonde! Thank you! ❤
How do you deal with breakage? Any tips? I’ve had copper hair for about a year now and I have a lot of breakage but I’m unsure which product to buy (olaplex 3 didn’t help at all)
Abbey, I have changed how I do my hair so much since watching you. About six years ago the texture of my hair changed dramatically. Thanks to menopause I went from really straight hair to wavy/curly. When my hair was straight I washed it every night, went to bed wet and brushed it out in the morning. Strangely, my hair stayed in pretty good shape. Once my hair was curly I went down the whole curly hair rabbit hole. I stopped using sulfates and silicones and the whole thing. However, even using heavy conditioners and leave ins, my hair didn't look or feel great. I have now added back sulfates for clarifying and using silicones again (amodimethicone anyone?) and my hair is doing much better. I have also starting using hair oil especially on my ends as a pre-treatment. Thank you so much for all you do.
I can so relate to the changes in hair texture from menopause! I have let my natural gray come in and while I love it, I also hate it because it's so different than my stick straight brown hair I was born with. Now it's wavy and the frizz! My God!
@@Jess-Rabbit Didn't bother me a bit. I just laid it out on my pillow and in the morning it was dry. I love washing my hair but hate styling it. If I could get away with not styling it now w/o it looking like a Lion King audition, I would.
I LITERALLY had to stop and look at your name to make sure that I didn't write this 😂 I for real thought I'd done lost it!! Everything you said sounds EXACTLY like my story for the last couple of years or so!!! 🙂
I love a clarifying shampoo. I went years without one, then used one and followed with a good hair mask was life changing. My hair hadn't felt that soft and looked so good in years. But I also applaud your comments about product overload! I have wavy to curly hair and cannot tolerate the amount of product that most UA-camrs say we should use. It's unbelievable. I watched a woman with long hair use four pumps of a product for her curls, and then another woman with hair just touching her shoulders used six or seven of the same product, then used a towel to scrunch out the "excess" product. Gee, if only there was something she could do to not put in too much product 🤔
I’m in my keep it simple phase. I stopped highlighting after 40 year and I have a full head of 15inch salt and pepper hair that gets more compliments than my blonde ever got!
1.) Even though, I cannot afford the high end products yet, I have been so grateful for these tips of how to take care of my hair inside and outside of the shower. I have also noticed your drugstore hair care recommendations are always a 10/10 for me! Thank you Abby ❤️ 2.) I have always wondered what your thoughts are on Aveda hair products and if they are worth the extra coin. I get my hair done at an Aveda salon, and I guess their price points may be the same as some at Sephora/Ulta, just have never compared the two before.
You don’t even need salon products for good results! The formulations are not far off from drugstore products the drugstore products are just a bit simpler. L’Oréal has 21 benefit leave in conditioner basically identical to pureologys leave in that Abby likes. L’Oréal and garnier has good hair masks and oils and shampoo and conditioners. You can 100% achieve healthy hair on a budget.
Minerals in the water can dull your color or make it brassy (but it’s also the ashy toner washing out each time you wash revealing the natural state of your stripped hair straight after bleaching and before toner was applied). Ever since my hair is bleached lighter past the orange stage and more towards that pale yellow (inside of the banana color0 I don’t fight brass as hard as I used to anymore. Purple shampoos when overused can actually dull and darken your hair, because each time you use it it’s just depositing ashy pigments onto your hair and this can build up. Also, old school purple shampoo used to be drying and now they make nicer formulas that are not drying. I find you get the best results if you use a really good chelating shampoo first then use the purple shampoo afterwards so that you remove mineral deposits and then put on the ashy deposit. Another route is using a chelating shampoo first then using a purple conditioner (or making your own by mixing a semi-permanent dye into conditioner). You can’t just dump it on your head; it’s better to apply evenly in sections and if you’re mixing your own you have to formulate the color carefully. If the purple has too much blue in it and your hair is yellow, you will get green hair.
So helpful! Curious if you’d want to do an update on your fave ways to heatless style your hair? Whether it’s for a wavy or straight look. And also if you have recommendations for hair that goes frizzy when letting it air dry. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Lots of good tips. Just to say make sure you learn from your own hair journey. I have a different hair type, mine is wavy, not particularly frizzy but thick and coarse. My hair brushes super easy when soaking wet, particularly when I’ve just sprayed leave in conditioner, a comb or wet brush literally glides through. If I don’t brush when wet and try to brush when mostly dry, the knots dry in and are significantly more difficult to brush through
I have pretty straight hair but the routine I've come up with is 1) brush before I shower. So much easier to start with detangled hair before shampooing 2) after the shower brush it 100% soaking wet. Like very first thing, I toweled my hair, the brush is dripping water on my bath mat with every pass through my hair kind of soaking wet. Then leave aside from products just leavey hair alone until completely dry
i’m experiencing tons of shedding from stress, and what i believe is coupled with some harsh treatment of my hair. i bleached the underside too much the last few years, i wasn’t as gentle as I should’ve been, and went from one extreme to the next. For 7 years, I didn’t shampoo correctly at all, I fell down that whole “skip washes, use all natural, no sulfates) and my hair was so greasy! I didn’t pick up sulfates again until 2021! but then I wouldn’t condition every day, I’d sleep on wet hair constantly, and don’t have satin pillowcases, brushing roughly, and poor diet. I found your channel this morning because i was at such a loss of what to do. I have some things from Walmart in my cart right now. The Dove Dermacare Scalp health shampoo and conditioner, L’Oréal bond repair, a cleansing shampoo (V08) and the coconut oil you talked about! I’m going to be extremely thorough in how gentle I am, and also try the filter for the shower, if it’s apartment safe. I’ll update in a month! Wish me luck guys ❤
I liked that you mentioned your hair is fine and thick. Mine is too and so many “experts”; media and beauty editors don’t get that you can have thick fine hair. I feel like “good for all hair types is an incomplete sentence.
curly hair here! some of this is misleading. curly and wavy hair people have an easier time brushing through soaking wet hair vs dry hair. and we are also supposed to use a blow dry brush on soaking wet hair bc we need to style before it creates a curl, or it won’t stay styled and frizz will start to form.
The problem is that I have 3C curly hair and I don’t know if I’m using too many hair products or just the wrong ones but I still feel like I haven’t found the right routine that makes my hair look and feel great every time! Also I’m really trying to grow my hair long (which takes forever btw because of my super curly hair) but it’s challenging because I bleach my hair because I think it looks so beautiful and gives me so much confidence. And the way I see it, is that I might as well enjoy the journey while it grows longer rather than wait forever for it to grow long, but hating how it looks along the way. I hope I find the products and routine that work for my hair and that allow it to grow long faster.
The tools I’ve used which have been beneficial if I use consistently are: using un scented shampoo like Kristen Ess, when I do wash my hair, use warm vs hot water, dont brush wet hair, don’t blow dry if possible and for hair loss consider using pumpkin seed oil, rosemary oil. Dr. Drey is a good resource too for hair care tips.
I feel like my hair want to compete with a lemon when I don’t use purple shampoo for a while 😅 but since my scalp is very sensitive and I struggle with purple shampoo I use a purple conditioner every two weeks. It works way better for me. I just wanted to comment that in case someone doesn’t know purple conditioner also exists.
I am doing pretty much everything you have suggested and my hair is slowly improving. My next move will be to stop lightening my hair and just start adding the dark back. I feel like it thinned out a lot after I started highlighting it. And I will take your advice and let my hair dry 80% before combing through it. Totally doable.
I always wash my hair the day before/day of any hair appointments out of courtesy to the hair stylist. No one wants to touch dirty hair, especially 7-day old
Looks like I found a sister of mine today 😂 I’ve been a hair freak since on my 16 ( I’m 31 now ) I’d watch and listen every person that have to say something informative about hair growth & care , couse there is always something to learn . Thank you for your time and hello to all my hair freak sisters 😂❤️💋!
I use to be rough with my hair but started treating my hair like it is fragile. Since my hip replacement 5 months ago my hair has been coming out so I’m trying to do everything I can to take care of it. I am using a good shampoo and occasionally a hair mask. I also let my hair dry on it’s own which I know is better then using heat every time I wash it. I. appreciate all you suggestions.
Oh I’m so sorry for you! Hopefully it grows back now that the stressful incident is over. Massaging your scalp, using rosemary oil, minoxidil or the virtue density booster can really help “activating” those hair follicles again. Even micro needling might help? Just everything to get that healthy blood back into your scalp :) But mostly your body will probably do it on its own🙏🏻💕
Tip for fragile hair: apply a leave-in conditioner immediately as you are getting out of the shower and comb through with a tangle teezer or a wide-toothed comb. I use a microfiber towel and I also use little to no heat. People who have hair that stays wet alll day need to lightly dry theirs but mine dries pretty quickly and the leave-in conditioner protects it from the evaporative damage that can occur (kind of like wetting chapped lips makes them worse).
This will make a huge difference in your hair in the long run. Also, something I learned about post-surgery hair loss in my Trichology course is that it begins 2-3 moths after the surgery and stops about 3 months after it starts. Thank goodness it's only short term xx
I have highlights in my super long healthy hair and I've been getting them for over 30 years now, once a year. I have fine, but beautiful healthy hair, hardly any breakage. I've been following my hairdressers's advice to not wash my hair for at least 5 days before the highlighting procedure for decades now. This makes a lot of sense since the hair is protected by it's natural oils during the procedure and that's the reason why my hair is still long and healthy. Natural hair oils will not cause uneven colour distribution as you mentioned in your video. What can cause uneven colour distribution though is a silicone build up on hair!
Oooooh, fellow Twin Cities girlie here! Thank you so much for all your tips on hair. I’ve been watching your stuff pretty regularly since I discovered your channel and purchased your hair guide. It’s really helped my super fine, blonde hair!
@@AG-nn8lpmaybe you do unconciously. Do you protect your hair while sleeping? Do you brush it correctly? Do you oil it and know about emolients, humectants and proteins and when to use them on your hair? Every hair can be saved (besides of I'll people's hair)
@@Dupellathis is the big question! those things add up the most over time I think. are you brushing way too aggressively, is the diet lacking in anything, are you not protecting it before going out, etc.
Lots of great advice here! I love your emphasis on combing through the BS of marketing claims, like sulfate free or untrue marketing benefit claims. The haircare space is so difficult to comb through misinformation! I would also be really interested to hear if you have thoughts on environmental impacts with haircare, and claims that may be true or false about the damage of certain ingredients to the hair and the environment (eg. I agree with the benefits of silicones, but am wary if they are actually classed as microplastics for water contamination).
Great video. Learning about your hair is so important. I only recently learned about porosity and that I have low porosity hair. I changed all of my hair products and my hair is the best it has felt in years.
the reason i started using sulfate free shampoo a year ago is because i started dyeing my hair purple and using mild shampoos helps maintain the color (since it inevitably washes out due to the fact all hair colors are only semi permanent). it also helped bring out my naturally wavy texture even more. i do struggle with dry scalp and flakiness tho 😅
Abbey! Would you consider doing a video of all your hard water hair recommendations? I know you've mentioned the shower filter before, but maybe the nitry gritty on chelating shampoos? Or any other tips and tricks you've developed. Or any other filters you think are worthwhile. I'm aure that one is great, the 165$ pricetag is just a bit steep
I would love if you could talk more about hair color and clarifying shampoos. Do these newer formulations still strip the color? If so using one every shampoo would leave me with no color after a couple weeks.😊
Yup I used to wear my hair in really high tight ponytail everyday and I used to brush my hair wet thinking of more damaging things I used to do to my hair makes me so sad 😭 Because if you I have bought a shower filter it helped my hair alot I also use coconut miracle oil on my lengths and ends before washing I take really good care of my hair now before bed I brush it out carefully and wear it in a twist.I just can’t tell you enough how much you have helped me with my hair! ❤
I feel like sulfate free shampoo doesn't keep my hair clean as long nor does it clean my hair as good as sulfate shampoo. Your supposed to wait till your hair is like 70% dry before using the revlon one step. Otherwise you'd be there drying it alot longer.
After I started really looking into how to keep care of my hair, what my hair needs and found your channel, I've had MUCH more success with health AND growth! Especially your suggestion to use a coconut based oil before washing! Thank you!! ❤ I am obsessed with using a leave in conditioner too! Also JAW CLIPS ARE ELITE!
Ooh Abbey, u should try Amika’s Reset Shampoo. It’s their clarifying shampoo and it sprays out in a can like a mouse but it’s a clear shampoo. I love it!
About the last thing: do not ever ever let conditioner dry in your hair & go to sleep. For some reason letting large amounts of regular conditioner dry in your hair creates horrific tangles. There's an upper limit to how much conditioner is actually detangling
Your videos motivates me to take more care of my hair thank u❤, Could you please create a video sharing all the advice you have learned about growing hair, starting from washing to maintaining cleanliness and health? It would be helpful if you could include information on establishing a hair care routine, such as when to use oil, apply a moisturizing mask, serums, and hair creams.
I don't ever remember you talking about purple shampoo before, Abbey, so thank you for covering that one. I have warm blonde colored hair and I've been wondering if I should try it, but since I use a clarifying shampoo and don't live in an area with hard water, now I think I'll just skip it. Thanks for all the other great tips as well 💞
I’ve been using your tips for over a year and the results are amazing!!! Now if only i could get my family members to stop being so harsh on their hair…the bleach damage is REAL
most things I agree with. The never brushing ur hair wet thing kinda throws me off (curly girls might know why) and the letting ur hair air dry till 80% dry. I‘ve seen trichologists talking about how that is actually not healthy for ur hair and can cause permanent damage to it. The explanation in short was: water makes the hair cuticles swell and leaving them damp for to long causes exactly what people try to avoid while air drying. Dull and weakened hair. So yeah. Talking about to much contradictory information out there.
I think we just need to take the advice whilst keeping in mind that this is what works for someone with straight hair, so a few things will not work for us.
I’m a curly girl too and I NEVER comb my hair dry. Ever. Always comb it wet, with a wet brush, and with a product in it, like a leave in or curl cream.
Abbey, you say that you rarely use heat styling tools as they damage your hair. Can you please tell us how you got the beautiful waves you had today without using heat?
Ive done the ponytail thing too, Ouch! Now i add alittle ogx oil after showering put my hair in a microfiber towel, let it dry about 80% then dry with my revlon dryer or let it air dry. I use the revlon on the low setting, and it works with no frizz. Thanks for your videos, ive learned alot about not doing certain things.
Some comments on the color stuff. Purple shampoo is meant to add pigment to cancel out yellow/gold tones in the hair, which can have a "brightening" effect because the hair is a cooler tone (even though it's not actually lighter). As far as highlights go - going in with super dirty hair is fine if your highlights are done with bleach, but if you are using a permanent color to highlight, then you don't want to have super dirty hair because (theoretically) it could interfere with the color deposit
You say brushing wet hair is damaging, but brushing my hair loaded down with conditioner when soaking wet is the only way I can get a brush through it. My hair is lower back length, fine, high density, but very damaged. I've ordered some of your recommendations, but most haven't showed up yet. I know you like AMODIMETHICONE and i was looking at my favorite leave-in's ingredients and guess what was the first ingredient after water!?! Yep, amodimethicone! No wonder I love it so much😂
It really depends on your hair type. Straight hair shouldn't be brushed when wet, but curly hair should. Michelle from LabMuffin made a great video about it: ua-cam.com/video/j66a0MUfRx0/v-deo.html&ab_channel=LabMuffinBeautyScience
I have been watching your videos for almost a year now and my hair is so long a fabulous!! Thank you so much! ❤ I used to do all the wrong things and my hair was so broken (and I never color my hair) that it wouldn’t grow past a certain length. You changed my hair life! 🥰
I was under the impression that sulfates aren’t necessarily bad for hair…. It’s just that they aren’t exactly healthy in general. Many people with skin conditions (e.g., eczema) should avoid them because they can tend to irritate already-dry skin.
Lol at that last tip. While I don't personally follow the Kardashians this can be applied to basically all celebrities and pictures in general we saw online. I really like my hairdresser since she's very blunt about things and whenever I bring her a picture of what I want my hair to look like she will always point out things like "Ok I can dye it that colour but you should know that that is a wig/they're wearing extensions/the lighting gives it that shine" etc. She's always very upfront about what the result will actually look like on my hair which I appreciate a lot. She also told me I shouldn't come with dirty hair if I want highlights or colour put in. She said its a very annoying misconception but that colour actually takes much better on clean hair. I was so shocked since I ALWAYS came with dirty hair to every hair appointment haha.
Hi Abby, do you have any tips to avoid mechanic breakage when you go to the salon to get your hair highlighted? they’re always so rough when brushing wet bleached hair I start to cry on the inside 😓
im so on the edge with sulfates.. cause when i use shampoos with sulfates they usually dry out my scalp in the long run but when i used sulfate free shampoos i felt like it didnt cleanse my hair enough.. im so lost
Hey Abbey, have you ever reviewed or talked about Vegamour? This video is so great! Had the same problem with rice water. My hair is so bleached and damaged, and that was the icing on the cake. My hair started breaking a bad after I used rice water.
Love this video, just feel like the wording of the tips was odd. Having things like "avoid deep cleaning" on the screen but talking about how that's something you wouldnt do made my brain twitch.
Okay, so I have curly long hair. I never understood the method of combing your hair wet with a conditioner. I get the idea of the conditioner making it smoother but... Just brush your hair before washing and don't tangle it while washing. Combing wet hair is very damaging, even if it's done with a conditioner.
I’m beginning to think I’m the only person on earth who never has tangles. I have fine hair. I can comb or brush after washing or in the morning after sleeping or after riding in a car with the windows down….etc. etc. Once in a great while I might come to a spot with a small tangle. I stop brushing and just move to another area. When I get back to that spot, it’s gone. My hair is just below my shoulders. I wash it once a week. I’m going next month to get a blunt bob cut just above my shoulders. I’m 77 years old. I feel my long, fine hair looks scraggly. This is the first time it’s been below my shoulders in 30 years and I don’t know how to put it up. A bob will work better for me at this age with no knowledge of different styles other then down or clipped at the sides. I love your videos and your hair is gorgeous. BTY I’ve never colored my hair. I did henna a couple times in my 30’s. My gray looks like highlights. 👏I still have plenty of brown but it is getting grayer each month now. Lol
Can you do an updated full hair care routine 🙏🏻 different shampoos & conditioners, etc. Also would love to see a video about seborrheic dermatitis ! How it affects hair and treatment
I'm 43(44 in a month). I'never dyed my hair except once when I was 20 and I used one of those dyes that wash off in six showers or something. I wash my hair every 3 days unless it is summer and very hot, than it may be every day or every other day. I do not style my hair, I blow dry my hair only when it is cold but in a loose way. After washing it I squeeze the water, wrap it in a towel for some minutes and than I do some headbanging back and forth and it is amazing for separating the strands and get rid of the excess water and than I comb it. once a week I use a pre shampoo and during the hot months I only shower with fresh water, no hot water. And that's it. I love my hair.
Honestly your recommendations has changed the texture of my hair and made it so shiny. But my hair doesn’t grow long past chest area for some reason. Any recommendations?
Since you say your hair is frizzy and poofy if you don't apply a leave in conditioner after so long, I'd love to see you try styling your hair wavy curly! If I recall correctly you also said your sister has wavy hair forever ago. Love your videos!
DON’T: 1. 🚫Wear your hair in the same style everyday 2. 🚫Avoid deep cleaning/sulfate based shampoos 3. 🚫Apply more product in hopes of getting better results 4. 🚫Use a blow dry brush every time you brush your hair 5. 🚫Buy a product because of the claimed benefits 6. 🚫Brush your hair when it’s soaking wet 7. 🚫Use purple shampoo every week 8. 🚫Go to the salon for highlights with filthy hair 9. 🚫Be rough with your hair 10. 🚫Trust the Kardashians as a source or truth for hair trends
I have extremely hard water and used a lot of conditioner which made my hair limp and static prone. Since switching to a shampoo bar that is very natural and conditioning my hair has totally healed and all I need is a spray on leave in conditioner on the ends and a little booster spray. I love my hair now and it’s long and strong!
I made the mistake of going sulfate free for 7 years. The end result was a diagnosis of female pattern baldness because my lab tests came back normal. Since nobody is bald in my family, I decided to look around. I started with my routine and realized the day I used sulfate after coloring my hair copper my hair didn't fall. Short story, I went back to sulfate/silicones I used for 38 y before going no poo. It recovered mostly, althought it ain't curling from the roots anymore.
@Willowy13 What sulfate-containing products do you use now? I've been looking for a good sulfate-containing shampoo but don't know what to try. I'm tired of the sulfate-free stuff.
For fine hair this has worked wonders for me: Shampoo scalp and don't apply shampoo to strands. Use a mask (Morracin Oil mask light won't weigh down fine hair!) Pureology leave in (6 spray pumps for fine hair) oil ends! Olaplex or Virture oil is amazing. That is all you need! Weekly use a bond repair. Olaplex 3, Redkin Acidic, K18. I used this process to grow fine natural light blonde hair, in my 60's!, and learned it from Blow out professor here on youtube. I think you are saying about the same thing here. Marketing: Olaplex 3 is the only product you need in that line, the rest of it IS marketing. Leaving conditioners and treatments longer than recommend is basically wasting your time and money. I use Redkin Volume shampoo. Best to blow dry as you suggest but do put keep in mind ladies the idea is to have some tension on the brush all the way the ends which smooths cuticle down, which is the idea here. Purple shampoo is a joke! Don't waste your $$.Any recommendations for an every day conditioner when not treating the hair?
I think she does that in order to prevent too much buildup accumulating on the scalp between washes. When a lot of dirt and oil builds up and is not removed in a timely manner, it can clog hair follicles and impede hair growth.
Thank you for the great tips!! I had been using the Revlon brush hairdryer and thought it was the answer to all my prayers... UNTIL I felt how scalding hot it gets! That's when I saw a video from you talking about it, and I was finished. I, too, have very fine hair and can not afford to torture it with such high heat and pulling.
Same. The dryer brush is a great styler. But it got so much hotter than my regular dryer, the damage was painfully onvious after three months of using it. Never again.
Can you look into the science of air drying your hair vs blow drying? I've heard some hair scientists quote studies that air drying is more damaging than holding your blow dryer inches away from your head.
I really struggle with clarifying shampoos (and I mean something more gentle like Oaui detox shampoo) because I have coarse hair. I want to make sure I'm removing any product buildup ideally every time I wash my hair, but I notice my hair is definitely frizzier when I use them, even if I add a mask, leave-in and styling cream. Would you say for coarser hair types, it's recommended to use clarifying shampoos less often? Or do I just need to look for better conditioning products?
I tried the DP Hue Apple cider vinegar rinse and also the Inkey List salicylic acid scalp tx. I like the rinse better than clarifying shampoo. I have thick coarse hair.
I only use a clarifying shampoo twice a month. I use Ouai. I have thick coarse hair mixed with fine. I also use a deep conditioner hair mask (Colleen Rothschild) when I use a clarifying shampoo.
Thank you so much for all the work you put in, I really appreciate you! I hope that one day you might do a dedicated video about how to treat thin fine hair. I follow your routine, but tbh I'm not sure I need a clarifying shampoo as my scalp is normal and I don't use leave-in products other than conditioner mid-length to ends. Speaking of which, since I need so little leave-in conditioner for my three hairs 🤣, would it be okay to add water to it to make application easier? Also, I've tried volumizing products and they all make my hair feel sticky or like straw. Any recommendations?
I just don't know what else to do if I'm not round brushing my hair. I have short, fine, frizzy hair. I guess I'll try to do air drying as much as I can. I don't use a styling tool- just a round brush and hair dryer that I use on really low setting. Any other tips would be great though!
I am mortified at all the damage I've done to my hair. Putting up the same way daily, drying my hair aggressively, applying products poorly, and based on their packaging details. I'm doing my best to repair. I'm going to take all your advice in this video. I have type 1B hair. Would you think that a silk or satin bonnet at night would be a good idea? Also, I'm a welder fabricator. What's the best material to wear to protect my hair from the gear that I wear? Thank you!
Your doggos are the cutest! My hair has recovered from extreme hairloss while I was anemic. I am SO gentle with it now. Your tips have helped my hair. Thank you💕
Please tell me what you think about the blowout professor!! Love his videos but don't know if what he says about cheaper products is true since you do say that cheaper products can work....
I love him but he’s not always correct because he is a hair stylist and doesn’t have the knowledge on actual ingredients. He only mentions sulfates and things like that which is all the knowledge he has on ingredients. But his knowledge is outdated. I do everything he says expect I use drug store products with the same results . I just look at ingredients
@@jociir2650what deep conditioner, blow out balm and heat protectant spray, do you use? I agree with you, I love him too and follow his protocol but also use drugstore products and I’ve gotten really good results. Only thing I do use that isn’t drugstore is Olaplex but that’s because I’ve been using it with good results for years.
I wish I could wait until my hair was 80% dry to brush and detangle my curly hair. I can’t even use a leave in conditioner. I have to use regular conditioner and the apply my gel from root to tip. I really wish I could wear my hair straight more often but I have to wash it so often it would lead to too much heat damage. Anyway I have learned a lot from you so thank you for sharing with all of us.
I am going easy on my hair, treating it like silk as I get a grasp of what I need to do for the interim of growing out my natural hair. I believe SLS and the other one are banned in Europe for hair and body products so don’t have to pick a side there. My ex’s aunt was a hairdresser in the 70’d and she always said not to wash you hair for a week if you can stand it before going in for color because your natural oil would protect your hair better from the aggressive stuff she would use on it for coloring. Now I’m confused but don’t care as I shall not be coloring my hair again.
I definitely use a lot of the K 18 but it personally gives me the worst headaches in the world even when the first time I used it the proper amount that they recommended so I just kind of use however much I feel like leave it in for 10 minutes or whatever and then I rinse it out because otherwise I get the worst headache for quite a while. I may be alone in this, but it’s just some thing I experience seems like it does some thing good to my hair though. Revlon is my go to as well I don’t typically use them every time either tho also never super wet
Abbey have you learned anything in your studying about dry shampoo? Is it bad for your hair follicles/scalp? Ik it was super trendy for awhile. I still love it for volume and prolonging between washes. But I don't wanna use it if it's hurting my hair growth

omgggg stop that's so terrible! I'd be distraught lol. BUT I'm so glad you're here xoox
OMG. Your stylist should have revealed that little bombshell *before* they even touched your hair! 😬😖
That's so funny

Omg every stylist I’ve been to has always yanked through my soaking wet hair, not starting at the ends, and before applying leave ins and then being sooo aggressive with their round brushes when drying!! Ever since watching your videos it makes me cringe when they do it 😅😅 thank you for sharing such important information on all your channels!!
So true for the round brush. I feel the same everytime I go to the salon
I so relate to this
I agree with you 100% I have no idea why so many STYLISTS and I'm sorry to bash them but there are some HORRIBLE STYLISTS out there they take the towel and rub it ALL over your HEAD HARD then they whip the comb through your head or brush I personally think if STYLIST starts to do that and they don't want to listen to what you're saying I think you should get out of the chair and WALK AWAY RUN AWAY because to me they're NOT a good STYLIST if that's how they're going to do your HAIR and they haven't even started cutting yet which also brings me to SCISSOR HAPPY STYLISTS ugh another scary situation and a WHOLE nother conversation that I have OCD and TRAUMA from now ugh😔
I relate to this so much! WHY do they do it like that?? They're supposed to know what's good for hair right? Or do they want to damage it right away after the trim so that you're already set for the next visit? Lmao
Seriously when they do it it makes me want to just get up and walk out
Your tip on being gentle with your hair is the one that has made the best difference for me! I don’t get my hair colored or use a lot of heat, so for me the biggest source of damage is mechanical on my fine hair. I can really tell a difference by brushing and styling more carefully!
Omg good I'm so glad
It really makes all the difference in the world. I started this a while back because my hair was getting somewhat damaged, but already quite long and it makes such a difference!
The best hair of my life was during the pandemic. I washed it every 3 days, let it air dry and used no heat or highlights. It grew like a weed and I didn’t have one single split end in sight!
Same here 😂 my over processed dyed hair was never happier! I think that’s the first time in my life after the 8th grade that I rocked an air dried hairstyle in public
Same here my hair was soo long and nice during covid.
Saaaame, it's sad and funny and at the same time! My hair was so healthy , my tips thick and I had long hair during the lockdown...
I’ve done that for the past 5 years and idk if I’m comparing to those w better genetics but mine just keeps getting split ends 😞 following this channel now to help out with this😅
Now realizing it’s probably related to the stress of being back to work and school😂
I'm so so glad to hear that!! My mom also had really similar changes to her hair due to menopause... so interesting how hormones impact our hair.
I can so relate to the changes in hair texture from menopause! I have let my natural gray come in and while I love it, I also hate it because it's so different than my stick straight brown hair I was born with. Now it's wavy and the frizz! My God!
Who wants to go to bed with wet hair.... gross
Please could you recommend am affordable clarifying shampoo and hair mask?
Every shampoo I use dries out my hair
I’m in my keep it simple phase. I stopped highlighting after 40 year and I have a full head of 15inch salt and pepper hair that gets more compliments than my blonde ever got!
Me too!
1.) Even though, I cannot afford the high end products yet, I have been so grateful for these tips of how to take care of my hair inside and outside of the shower. I have also noticed your drugstore hair care recommendations are always a 10/10 for me! Thank you Abby ❤️
2.) I have always wondered what your thoughts are on Aveda hair products and if they are worth the extra coin.
Yay I'm so glad!! I have never tried Aveda... something I need to check out!
I use Aveda body products and love them, I haven't tried the hair line, aside from when I see my stylist. I much more prefer Redkin.

@shelby2493 yes, I can see that. They don't seem very special ingredient wise. I'm a sucker for the smell of their lotion tho.
If I don’t brush when wet and try to brush when mostly dry, the knots dry in and are significantly more difficult to brush through
Same here, and same hair type as you. I never have issues brushing my hair wet when using the right products.
I saw an interesting video on this exact thing on Lab Muffins channel she talked all about coily hair brushes with less friction when wet. Cool!
Absolutely! I always want everyone to do what works best for them
I have pretty straight hair but the routine I've come up with is
1) brush before I shower. So much easier to start with detangled hair before shampooing
2) after the shower brush it 100% soaking wet. Like very first thing, I toweled my hair, the brush is dripping water on my bath mat with every pass through my hair kind of soaking wet. Then leave aside from products just leavey hair alone until completely dry
Trusting celebrities for beauty advice can be dangerous and costly. I agree with you. It's not always good to believe celebrities.
i’m experiencing tons of shedding from stress, and what i believe is coupled with some harsh treatment of my hair. i bleached the underside too much the last few years, i wasn’t as gentle as I should’ve been, and went from one extreme to the next.
If you don’t heat style after air drying how does your look so silky? How do you style it after 80-90% air dry?
curly hair here! some of this is misleading. curly and wavy hair people have an easier time brushing through soaking wet hair vs dry hair. and we are also supposed to use a blow dry brush on soaking wet hair bc we need to style before it creates a curl, or it won’t stay styled and frizz will start to form.
I'm so glad to hear that! Being patient is the hardest part... hair takes so long to fully transform but you'll get there!
I always wash my hair the day before/day of any hair appointments out of courtesy to the hair stylist. No one wants to touch dirty hair, especially 7-day old
Exactly
Who goes 7 days without a wash?!
It's not always better. Leaving hair wet for long is very damaging. It's best to use some high quality hair dryer on medium setting.
Oh I’m so sorry for you! Hopefully it grows back now that the stressful incident is over. Massaging your scalp, using rosemary oil, minoxidil or the virtue density booster can really help “activating” those hair follicles again. Even micro needling might help? Just everything to get that healthy blood back into your scalp :)
But mostly your body will probably do it on its own🙏🏻💕
@@karinvancaspel Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I appreciate that.🌸🌸
Tip for fragile hair: apply a leave-in conditioner immediately as you are getting out of the shower and comb through with a tangle teezer or a wide-toothed comb.
What’s the healthiest best hair dryer to use that doesn’t cost $800?

L'Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox shampoo is a great option if you have hard water.
I would love if you could talk more about hair color and clarifying shampoos. Do these newer formulations still strip the color? If so using one every shampoo would leave me with no color after a couple weeks.😊
I cringe whenever I go to the salon because of how rough / use of tension when I am trying to get my hair to grow. Any advice?
Ask them not to heat style your hair and just let it dry naturally.
Even when they are brushing it out… they rip through tangles
I ask them to be very gentle. Maybe say you have a sensitive scalp.
Tell them to stop 😅
I can relate. I almost die of a heart attack the way they rough brush/comb through my hair. Fighting through those knots.. ughhh 😂

About the last thing: do not ever ever let conditioner dry in your hair & go to sleep. For some reason letting large amounts of regular conditioner dry in your hair creates horrific tangles. There's an upper limit to how much conditioner is actually detangling
Truth I did this once because I forgot to rinse out conditioner (shows you how exhausted I was lol) and my hair felt HORRIBLE
Been there! I figured out it's because conditioners also have some "cleansers" in them so that the conditioner rinses out of the hair.
Your videos motivates me to take more care of my hair thank u❤, Could you please create a video sharing all the advice you have learned about growing hair, starting from washing to maintaining cleanliness and health? Thanks for all the other great tips as well 💞
Yes you can totally skip!! Save that amazing warmth lol
The explanation in short was: water makes the hair cuticles swell and leaving them
damp for to long causes exactly what people try to avoid while air drying.
Excessive oily or excess product can affect color. It’s unlikely but I have seen oil push color away from where you intended it to be
You say brushing wet hair is damaging, but brushing my hair loaded down with conditioner when soaking wet is the only way I can get a brush through it.
Same! Love combing the conditioner through & then it is manageable after washing out x
I have been watching your videos for almost a year now and my hair is so long a fabulous!! Thank you so much! ❤ I used to do all the wrong things and my hair was so broken (and I never color my hair) that it wouldn’t grow past a certain length. You changed my hair life! 🥰
YAY I'm so so happy to hear this xoxo
Yes, that’s the main reason I avoid getting my hair professionally done! 😢
Having it highlighted is the worst thing you can do to it, other than just bleaching all of it at once.
Coming from a hairdresser…. Offer to brush your own hair out. I cringe at this Myself but no one can brush your hair out bette than yourself
im so on the edge with sulfates.. cause when i use shampoos with sulfates they usually dry out my scalp in the long run but when i used sulfate free shampoos i felt like it didnt cleanse my hair enough.. im so lost
Sulfate free clarifying shampoo
Use both interchangeably then. Sulfate free most washes and sulfate one for extra clarifying 1-2 times a week.
Hey Abbey, have you ever reviewed or talked about Vegamour?
This video is so great! Had the same problem with rice water. My hair is so bleached and damaged, and that was the icing on the cake. My hair started breaking a bad after I used rice water.
I love all your tips. What water filter do you recommend?
Love this video, just feel like the wording of the tips was odd. Having things like "avoid deep cleaning" on the screen but talking about how that's something you wouldnt do made my brain twitch.
Thank you Abbey! 🤍

DON’T:
1. 🚫Wear your hair in the same style everyday
2. 🚫Avoid deep cleaning/sulfate based shampoos
3. 🚫Apply more product in hopes of getting better results
4. 🚫Use a blow dry brush every time you brush your hair
5. 🚫Buy a product because of the claimed benefits
6. 🚫Brush your hair when it’s soaking wet
7. 🚫Use purple shampoo every week
8. 🚫Go to the salon for highlights with filthy hair
9. 🚫Be rough with your hair
I use products with silicones in them. But sulfate products make my hair really frizzy for some reason? I don't know what to do.
What made you start washing your hair twice a week instead of once?
I think she does that in order to prevent too much buildup accumulating on the scalp between washes. When a lot of dirt and oil builds up and is not removed in a timely manner, it can clog hair follicles and impede hair growth.
My question exactly....wait, what??! I thought she washed her hair every 7 days
It’s the current trend. That’s why.
I can't see much difference between that and blow drying with a round brush
Same. The dryer brush is a great styler. But it got so much hotter than my regular dryer, the damage was painfully onvious after three months of using it. Never again.
@@kristabel71 The revlon one has a cold setting.
Can you look into the science of air drying your hair vs blow drying? I've heard some hair scientists quote studies that air drying is more damaging than holding your blow dryer inches away from your head.
What are your thoughts on Aveda products?? Thanks,,
Great Tips. I Would Love A Video On Your Hair Color/Technique..
Hi Abbey! Do you think keratin treatments are good for the hair? My hair is extremely freeze!
They can help the appearance but they are actually highly damaging . A lot of salons don’t even offer this service anymore
Any chemical treatment that forces your hair to go the opposite way of its natural texture is incredibly damaging and should be avoided.
@@queenofmckean2278 thank you! I'll definitely give it a try!
I only use a clarifying shampoo twice a month. I use Ouai. I have thick coarse hair mixed with fine. I also use a deep conditioner hair mask (Colleen Rothschild) when I use a clarifying shampoo.
Use a clarifying shampoo first then your regular shampoo after . Might help . Instead of using the clarifying for 1st and 2nd wash
Ouai has so many toxic crap. 0/100 on Yuki for most products
What about using purple shampoo on naturally gray hair? I find if I don’t use it my hair looks brassy after a week.
What does letting your hair dry 80% mean exactly ? How do you measure that? How do you know?
Thank you!
You shouldn't use the heat brush with wet hair though? Just barely damp hair
@@jociir2650 thanks!
@@jociir2650I agree. Everything i have tried he suggest is AWFUL
What's your thoughts on herbal essence aloe .... I used the mango 🥭 aloe ...
They did not trend rice water 🫤. They dont trend nothing that has to do with hair .
My hair has never looked better since finding your channel. Your advice makes a difference and I appreciate it. ❤
YAY!
Abbey have you learned anything in your studying about dry shampoo? Is it bad for your hair follicles/scalp? Ik it was super trendy for awhile. I still love it for volume and prolonging between washes. But I don't wanna use it if it's hurting my hair growth
Yes! I've noticed such a difference since not using the blow dry brushes! I've used it like 3 times in 3 months now😌
This was one of the most informative and helpful videos on hair that I have EVER watched, thank you! Subscribed! 😊😊😊
