I think the reason that we hold on to those hair myths is because haircare is the first thing we had control over as girls. We may not have been able to wear makeup until older but our hair is something we could focus on so we believed all those weird things we were told as young girls. They are pretty deeply embedded in our thought process. Plus there aren't a whole lot of people out there trying to dispell those myths. Thanks for helping with that!
Love this - it's so true. Thinking back to me, in the early nineties with my once fortnightly copy of Just Seventeen hoping for some kind of help with my fluffy, wavy hair (and thinking I could turn it into the slippy, slinky, shiny straight hair of my bestie!). People are very lucky to have all this info at their fingertips now!
@@AbbeyYung I agree that would be a great video. I'd love for you to include discussing products that are marketed for specific hair types. For instance, I see hair content creators with hair like mine (fine and straight) using masks and oils that seem to be marketed as being for thick or coily hair. Would love to know your thoughts on that.
My hair never grew past my shoulders. I air dried it and took good care of it. Then I started to blow dry my roots after every shower. And my hair grew long. So for my hair it was the best ting ever to blow dry the hair. And now its really long 😊
Have you watched her hair wash routine videos? She kind of addresses those concerns. She let's her hair dry about 80% before she uses a blow dryer. Also microfiber towel. Then she puts her products in and uses a hair dryer. 😊
Thank you for this video! I’m a wavy haired girl that’s left behind a lot of the cgm “rules” because, quite frankly, those silicones and sulfates work for my hair! My hair is so much longer, healthier, and less prone to impossible-to-untangle knots than it ever was when I avoided using those.
Thank you for commenting this! I haven’t used sulfates or silicones since like 2017, but am re-examining my hair care routine and see people I trust recommend products with sulfates and silicones. The silicones scare me a bit more than sulfates, but I would love to know more about products you like! I am a wavy haired girl too
@@maddielane3084 I totally understand the fear that comes with considering crossing back over to silicones and sulfates on your hair care journey. If you're looking for a bridge between silicones and not, I know that Manes by Mel has a video about silicones and talks about which ones are water soluble. For the longest time I used the Smooth Moves conditioner and shampoo set by Not Your Mother's. The silicones in there are water soluble from what I remember. Unfortunately, none of my local stores carry it anymore, which is why I stopped using it. Currently I am using the Odele Smoothing conditioner, which is pretty good. My hair likes amodimethicone, like Abbey's. I do not believe that is water soluble. I'm still using up some smooth moves shampoo and I occasionally throw a cleansing shampoo (pantene volume) in the mix when my hair feels like it needs a reset. I've found the Kristin Ess softening line deep conditioner works pretty well - that's silicone free, as are most of her products. These are all 4/5 products for me. Not perfect, but they get the job done pretty well. I'm stuck at the high end of the drugstore pricepoint, so I don't know about higher end products. My holy grail products happen to be my leave-ins. I HIGHLY recommend the Odele leave-in conditioner. It softens my hair and keeps it tangle free. My only specialty splurge is the Verb curl creme - that also is fantastic. I've also been using the Kristin Ess softening line's subtle shine oil and that has worked pretty well so far. I know personally that my hair and dimethiconol do not get along. If anything, I find my hair gets more tangly and frizzy when I've used that in the past (after a first wash or two that goes super well, it goes downhill for me pretty quickly.) I hope this helps! Best wishes on your hair care journey.
@@HollieThompson-g3l Hello there! Sorry I missed your comment. If you jump back on this thread, I replied to someone else who just asked the same question as you. Best wishes with your hair care journey!
Using products that are film forming has changed my hair for the better. So many curly lines this avoid this but using a deep cleansing shampoo with sulfates and a conditioner that provides a coating makes my hair look and feel the best. Breakage has stopped too. I have type 4 hair so this advice is universal (for me)
Hair fact that I wish I knew sooner is the difference between a clarifying shampoo and one that also has chelating properties. I only found out months after I moved into an area with very hard and also chlorinated water and my hair became an (seemingly) unfixable mess. Using a shampoo with not only clarifying but also chelating properties (in my case Joico K-Pak) once a week, followed by a nice hair mask, made all the difference :) In the long run, this also saved my sensitive scalp.
This is interesting! I have pretty hard water and I bought a shower head with a filter but use a gentle shampoo because I have a sensitive scalp and allergies so my shampoo definitely needs to be fragrance free, and I’ve found that harsh sulfates irritate it. A lot of products that are meant for sensitive scalps also don’t work for me because they contain ingredients such as salicylic acid that irritate my scalp, so I’ve been using a fragrance-free baby shampoo with a gentler kind of sulfate and shampooing twice and a bit more often, but I think I do still have some hard water buildup, I just don’t know of a shampoo that would eliminate it properly and not hurt my scalp in the process, it’s very frustrating. I really wish there were more options for people with allergies/sensitivity/skin conditions.
@@acarcarazzaHave you tried AG Hair Naturals Balance shampoo? Check out those ingredients. It’s supposed to be organic and chelating at the same time. I have a very sensitive + hard water too & this along w/ a shower filter has been able to do the job!
@@acarcarazza I feel you. Most stronger sulfates and acidic acid don't work for my scalp. It can be frustratingly difficult to find a good clarifying shampoo. Somehow living proofs detox shampoo works for me. I have no idea why but I'm not questioning it or looking somewhere else. I'm just grateful I found it because I really need a chelating shampoo where I live.
I 100% feel this. I moved to very hard well water and oh boy did my hair go downhill. I picked up the ion detox shampoo and using it twice a week keeps it in check
This!! And when you air dry, your hair is trying to maintain as much moisture as possible which can lead to greasy looking hair. more so when its fine and thin
Would love a fragrance free hair care routine video for those of us with sensitive noses! More brands have fragrance free shampoo and conditioner than in the past but it’s hard to find other fragrance free products such as deep conditioners, bond repair, hair oils etc. options are very limited.
Loreal has an allergen free hair care line, but i use normal skin care on my scalp. I had reactions to masking fragrance in a few scalp care products and just started using my normal glycolic toner on my scalp instead of the glycolic scalp mask i got, it worked better and my hair stays shiny for longer. Vanicream and vaseline for everything. If you have severe allergies get vanicream for shampoo and conditioner and use vaseline in place of a normal hair grease( it is the main ingredient and you will notice baby hairs look fuller)
It's very hard to find and most of the fragrance free arent for my texture. I just started using SEEN at ulta. Its finally soft and mositurixing enough. I developed occupational allergies after a decade and theres very little I can use now anyways. Especially redken/pureology because I worked with them for years. I miss how my hair looked and felt with other brands but my skin is no longer wrecked and mohair has stopped falling out. But fragrance and SLS free that work well are hard to find. I've use a few shampoo and conditioner bars that's are ok
Okay, I don't usually comment but there ARE a few options. Sally's bondbar "Bonding Booster," Ouidad Unbreak my Bond drops, and Epres are all fragrance free bond repair options. The Ouidad drops you can add to any product you already own and don't react to, so it's on my to-try list. I would die for a fragrance free serum without nut oils or sunflower family ingredients, but no go so far. SEEN is the brand that does a fragrance free serum and blow dry cream, but they use bisabolol in pretty much everything, so if you get rashes from ragweed family stuff, skip that one. That's what's on my radar at least
@@j.o.4080 I'm allergic to the daisy family and contacted dermalogica about if they know where their bisabol is created, its not plant based its synthetic so I can use it. I also have the seen fragrance free products. I like the curl cream as a leave in for frizzy ends and the oil is very oily so you need a literal drop.
Please please do a video on a hair loss/ thinning related to hormones / post-pregnancy / perimenopause.... if you feel like you can speak to effective treatments as I KNOW if is super super complex.... scalp health ; ))) not length health! TY
@@easilysunburntyeah the vitamin change is essentially irrelevant, it is the fluctuations in our hormones that cause the increase shedding. Mostly because the elevated progesterone results in reduced shedding during pregnancy.
I just tried this one today. And yes! My hair is super soft, clean, and has a lot of movement. I used it with the L’Oréal glossing treatment and conditioner and it’s the best hair day I’ve had in AGES.
10:07 Abbey, I need to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this! My husband has seborrheic dermatitis and is struggling with excess sebum. He's treating his scalp and face accordingly, but it keeps coming back. After I read this excerpt I told him to try drying his hair and beard with a hair drier and I have to tell you it made a world of difference! For the past few days, his skin has only been improving and we do think it's this technique. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi having read your comments on the fact your hubby suffers with dermatitis, my boyfriend had the same problem I started buying a shampoo called HASK it’s great no chemicals natural products his scalp has stopped having problems. The shampoo range is on Amazon some shops sell it too Tescos Superdrug hope this helps too
You have changed my hair in just 4 months. I’ve been doing everything you say and my hair went from damaged and breaking off so much I had to cut it above my shoulders, to now it’s healthier than it’s been in years and I get so many compliments on it. It’s literally grown 4 inches too without breaking off like it used to. Thank you!
for the longest time i’ve had a huge fear of drugstore products because of the fact that one time i used some that irritated my scalp and eventually lead to my hair falling out (i have a really sensitive scalp so thats why it got irritated i suppose), but overtime i eventually decided to try drugstore products again, so i used elvive which was my favorite as a child AND LET ME TELL YOU, THE CONDITIONER IS BETTER THAN MY 30$ CONDITIONER AT DETANGLING. And detangling has been my biggest problem for so long, so thank you so much abbey for reviewing the product and making me consider buying it, im looking forward to trying more of your recommendations so please keep posting lmao 😭❤
On hair product application: I have super thin and fine hair and little of it- I struggle with severe chronic illness and thus- MAJOR hair loss 😭 My hair density is very slim, and I actually find it HARD to use leave in conditioners that are sprays, because it sprays right through the gaps between my hair strands and around my strands (if that makes sense). All of my hair barely fills a small pony tail… so I often have to spray leave in conditioners into my HANDS and apply it that way, or else none of my hair gets coated 🙏🏻💗 I never liked sprays anyway- I’d rather apply with my hands and make sure I’m getting 360 degree coverage!!! 💗💗💗 Love you, Abbey! You changed my hair and have helped me keep what I have left, healthy!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰
I used a shampoo from Amazon, ‘Watermans Grow Me Shampoo’. I honestly really found this to help. I have also been taking biotin supplements, which again, I found to be helpful. ❤
Kerastase has the best shampoo for fine hair! The classic one is nice, if it’s fine but you have a lot of it try Elixir Ultime. Christophe Robin and Ferrano Rossetti Parma also have good options for fine hair.
Spray the leave in conditioner into your palms and rub your palms together apply to the ends rubbing them between the hands in sections, then use a wet brush or comb through mid length etc..
I have wavy/curly hair and my current hair are routine is all drugstore products, most of which are NOT marketed for curls. Turns out my dense fine hair loves loves loves the Pantene volumizing shampoo and conditioner- big yay for silicons and sulfates. I need a deep cleanse and a lovely lightweight conditioner to get the best out of my hair. Since I wash only 1-2 x a week, and want to remove excess product each time, all my washes are clarifying. My hair has never looked better.my previous routine cost me $$$$$ and the results were highly inconsistent. Thanks for your work and being one of the sane hair care educators on social media.
Being gentle!!! Yes. I had to switch hairstylists and when I was making a mental list of reasons why one of them was because she literally was ripping out handfuls of hair every appt (so every other month). She would brushed my wet hair out as soon as she rinsed off bleach 🙃 “so the toner is even” and she often would tease my hair before foiling so she was literally ripping through self made mats on my head it was painful and I saw her throw away handfuls of my hair. My hair got so thin over the 2 years she was my stylist and I’ve been with my new one for 6 months and after a good trim plus proper handling I can see my hair is starting to look denser.
THANK YOU for taking an evidence & research based approach and being open minded to update your views. After watching your videos my hair is so much better, but I also realise how many influencers are giving wrong information..
💖 thank you. I'm 57 with wavy/curly hair. I didn't learn how to take care of my hair until 2020. This video really helped me realize I need to treat my scalp differently. My strands are coarse and dry. My scalp tends to get more oily. The thing is, this video showed me that I absolutely am over moisturizing my scalp with my shampoo for dry strands. 💡💖
If anyone is like me and needs a sulfate free shampoo bc of how hard their water is lemme tell you, Aveeno makes a crazy strong sulfate free clarifying shampoo. I'm so used to having to wash my hair every day that at first I really didn't like it because it was too drying but then I realized... I don't have to wash my hair every day anymore! 😂 It's strange for me to get used to but probably better for my hair overall especially with our water being so hard as I said before. It's the Aveeno clairfy and shine with apple cider vinegar, it doesn't smell anything like vinegar so don't worry about that at all lol. But yeah, I moved somewhere with hard water and all of a sudden my hair would feel weird and grimy after I washed it instead of clean and refreshed, so I tried to find out why and found Dr.Dray's video about sulfates and hard water combining into a weird film on the skin/hair so I decided to try sulfate free stuff for awhile. It worked better, no weird film, but I also struggled with having an oily scalp and not finding any of the sulfate free shampoos to be quite cleansing enough. Bummer but better than that weird thick film on my hair. Then I tried the aveeno one and boom, I can go days without washing my hair, I actually got a shower cap, I've never used one before 😂 now I know what they're for Lol
That first tip is one I wish I’d heard years ago. Turns out my scalp needs a clarifying shampoo and my hair/ends need more moisture. I’ve been treating them the same for years and it’s led to scalp issues. Thanks for explaining that so well!
Water quality is a huge factor. My daughter's hair used to be completely unmanageable for so many years and my hair struggled to grow. After moving out of a major metro area to the "country"...both of our hair changed almost instantly. Her has is smooth, manageable and not frizzy at all and my hair has grown 6 inches in 2 years. We have amazing well water
I would suspect you could totally have nice hair with the water that has higher concentrations of whatever was in it in the city, but you'd just have to accommodate your routine to it. Ie shampoo more, condition more, etc.
@sarahmuth171 no, it's the opposite. City water can be extremely harsh and the minerals in the water are very harsh on hair. Water should just be water
@rosegroshek1218 3 weeks ago @sarahmuth171 no, it's the opposite. City water can be extremely harsh and the minerals in the water are very harsh on hair. Water should just be water Maybe we shouldn't talk in absolutes... Well water completely destroyed my hair, I had to cut a foot off of it because there was literally no saving it. It was "natural" water, but water is a solvent. It has properties of the the earth it is surrounded by dissolved in it. Willing to bet a kidney that most well waters contain more minerals than most city waters. Switching to a cistern with city water was an utter blessing to my hair. Some wells produce terrible water because the land around them just isn't conducive to nice esthetically pleasing water.
Yes please!!! Having a video with names of ingredients geared for certain scalp goals/ hair goals would be amazing!! Then I could have it pulled up and go to that particular section of the video when I’m shopping for a shampoo for that corresponding purpose. 🙌🏼🙌🏼 maybe if it were separated by like…. Ingredients for a particular purpose and have a couple examples / your favorites to show for it? Thank youuuuuu!!!
Hi Abby! I've been watching your content for awhile now. My hair has completely transformed since trying some products that you recommended. Currently, my wash day routine, for long curly-wavy hair...pantine volume to clarify, loreal bond treatment shampoo then the pretreatment. Then eva nyc hair mask. Outside shower, just started trying the john frieda leave-in conditioner and it's my new go to leave in conditioner. I'm 43 yrs old and finally have a handle on this hair thing! Ty!!!
You just validate everything I have been thinking! I am 50 years old, and I know you're very young, but given your tricology studies, would you think about doing a video for "colored mature hair"?
I just wanted to comment and say that after consistently listening to your advice regarding hair wash days, product recs, as well as other things you've talked about... 3 months in and I am seeing a lot of progress with my hair. I have baby hairs coming in along my hair line filling the areas I lost hair over the last few years. So happy to see it 🙂
@@seabreeze4559 So for me at least I have made several changes. I use the coconut oil on my mids and ends, silk/satin pillow cases, microfiber towel for my hair, I'm A LOT more careful now while I'm working with my wet hair, minimizing heat, I have been using clarifying shampoo 1-2 times a week, and I have been using the bond repair shampoo/conditioner. Another big thing I've added over the last 2 months is using a scalp oil. That one I had to do a lot of research on before hand since I have fine hair. I do the method of using it before I shower and leaving it on for like 2 hrs before washing it out. That has helped me a lot too.
I would love to learn more about safely heatstyling your hair. Does heat protectant really work? And does it work so good that you can do it daily as long as you are using a heat protectant? Or a few times a week? When is heat styling really affecting your hair negatively? Dealing with thin frizzy curly hair but wanting to have smooth hair… consedering something like the airstrait. But it is really expensive and I’m not sure if splurging such a big amount of money is really necessary to style your hair in a ‘safe’ way. I would love to learn more about using heat in the styling in a ‘safer’ way
Also airdrying makes it much oiler bc the roots being flat to the scalp makes the sebum go right down the strand it's so good to blow dry your roots away from how the hair falls
It’s so smart to learn the purpose of each ingredient to figure out what works best for you! I used to be a huge snob about drugstore shampoo, but my scalp is oily and I trust your recommendations… so I tried the Pantene Volume & Body Shampoo which includes SLS. It makes my hair look and feel amazing!! 🤩 Lesson learned! You can’t judge a shampoo by its price, but can judge it by its contents! (Pureology is still my #1, but Pantene is a close second, and it’s great to have a more affordable option in my rotation!) Thanks, Abbey! 🌸
OMG I felt like I was crazy with the whole to blow dry/to not blow dry because of heat damage vs. my hair just looking so terrible (and darker) quicker after air drying -- and NO ONE was talking about it -- so this video confirmed everything I thought about that, thank you!!
If you look at women in the long extra long hair community, there are women with tailbone length, thigh length, even ankle length hair that still blow dry every day on the low or cool setting, and they all have beautiful hair. It's such a myth blow drying is bad for you. Just don't use high heat. Also, 95% of them are using drugstore shampoo & conditioners.
@@thedivinefeminine1821 Very true, thank you! It was just such a "wow" moment for me when Abbey mentioned her hair not looking or staying as nice if she didn't blow dry -- I've been wondering the same thing for so long!
Love the “bookworm” background! Pretty and unique. Everyone has a background with general decor, candles and lamps. This stands out- like your content!
Even a video just explaining which ingredients do what so I have a better idea of what to look for at the store. Also one discussing short hair and how to apply products to it. I have a hard time getting my leave in conditioner on just my lengths and ends when I don’t really have that much length (and I have an oily scalp). For reference my hair is shoulder length.
I can't confirm blow-drying thing with fine hair. If I blow dry my fine hair, which is still dry within a quarter of an hour anyway, then they are much more broken. My hair is just Healthy since I didn't blow it out anymore.
My hair and scalp are so much more healthy since watching your videos! Would love a video on products that are great for dry scalp as well as products that gloss the hair. Many blessings!!!💖💖💖
I want to share my hair/scalp situation for those who maybe have a similar situation as me 🙌 I have fine hair and very sensitive scalp (+mild atopic dermatitis). My scalp used to almost always itch after washing and drying my hair, so long time ago i made a decision to go sulfate free. Eventually it helped a lot and i rarely had any scalp itchiness or dryness. Until now, not so long ago (since i did not experience any problems) i have decided to experiment with other popular shampoos that said to help others. So i have purchased a professional shampoo, and it ruined my hair so much… What happened was i used to go from washing my hair 1-2 times a week to washing it almost every day because it started to get super oily! I bought many other shampoos to help my (now to have become) oily scalp. All the clarifying shampoos, detox shampoos, clear -like shamoos that have no oils in them, NOTHING worked and my hair still stayed super oily. Spent so much money on these “profesional shampoos”, but the conclusion is they were too “strong” for my sensitive scalp that was actually dry 🙂 So i went back to sls free shampoos and instead of using “volumizing” or “clarifying” or anything that says to be for oily scalp, i switched those to more hydrating, moisturizing or restoring shampoos. I also oil my scalp before washing my hair with oils like jojoba or olive oil, i notice it helps to soothe my scalp and heal it. Hope that whoever is reading this can find a solution to their hair problem. In other cases always try going to a professional: doctor, dermatologist, hairdresser if nothing helps. Listening to just influencers has ruined my hair (and i’ve tried almost everything!), but turns out i needed to stop for a moment and look differently at the situation ❤ P.S. I love Abbey, so there is no hard feelings to her videos! 😅 I still use her recommendations and some products she mentions but for shampoos i have already found my favourite that actually works for my scalp condition😊
Can I ask what shampoo you’re using? I switched to Pantene off Abbey’s recommendation and it’s been working really well… but my scalp has started crazy producing oil and I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve been over using it (like I wash every other day as it is cause I workout), or what? I also have had some lifestyle changes recently so honestly could be a lot of things. I like to experiment
At the moment I'm still looking for the perfect shampoo, I'm trying some samples that my hairdresser gave me or asking drugstores for samples to try. In fact, my scalp loved and stayed very fresh when I used The Rituals, Rituals of Hammam line shampoo and conditioner, and I also used the Rituals Scalp Scrub, so i might consider buying that line, It’s also not crazy expensive like the other shampoos i used to buy, and i think It’s like 90% clean ingredients. Plus my scalp stayed cleaner for longer. I noticed that all shampoos that are clear looking do not work for me, so i try to go for milky/white shampoos that are considered more for dry scalp, moisturising or repairing, these are more gentle for my scalp. Hope this helps 💜
Another great video Abbey! I have learned so much watching your channel. I would love some recommendations for dry scalp. Also I would love a video on menopausal changes in hair as I am dealing with that now.
Tip number one blew my mind. I’ve always reached for dry hair shampoo because my end are dry but I too have the oily scalp. I’ve literally been using the wrong shampoo! Thank you so much for telling us.
Also, for air drying, I’m with you on that. There are leave-in products that are heat activated so when you use them and you don’t blow dry, you are not activating their true potential and they can make your hair feel heavy and greasy. Always check if your products directions say to activate with heat.
Abbey, I would love for you to do a video how you get your hair so shiny. Recently, it looks like you did a reset on your hair and it's been looking really shiny! I don't know if it's highlights, a mask, or treatment you've done. I really want my hair to be shinier. I try to take really good care of it, but sometimes when it comes to achieving the shine, I end up putting too much moisturizing products on the hair and that's not good either. I would love to know what you do to get your hair to look like that. And in general, you've been glowing.💖
I 100% agree with everything, but especially the last one. Although getting a good skincare routine can be hard, I figured that out years ago but still struggling to find the right haircare routine - after spending a lot more money than I've ever spent on skincare. It's a whole different ballgame! That's why your channel has been so so helpful, especially on haircare! Congrats on getting certified!!! That's amazing!!
I have been using the Pantene Volume shampoo and conditioner for years now. I have purchased expensive shampoos and still come back to this brand. I also love I don’t have to pay extra for a pump. 🎉 Really enjoy the Healthy Sexy Tri-Wheat leave in for detangling my finer hair. Chef’s kiss. 💋
This is helpful. I've been watching you for a while and keep wanting to ask....How about us little older ladies (50) w/pixie gray hair? Hair is thin and since no pigment -- coarse texture and dry. Which is new for me. Scalp changed too, from oily to normal. Of course cabinet full of products for before gray that don't work now. I'm really having a difficult time. Can anyone help?
I’ve been following your content for a while now and the only thing I didn’t already from you in this video was about air drying, and it makes so much sense for my hair! I never really had words to describe it, but I guess my hair always feels fresher after I blow dry compared to letting it air dry, but I’ve been told through media for yearrrrrrs that air drying was healthier for your hair so everyone should do that! I went to the hair salon recently and the hairstylist said I have healthy hair, so I guess air drying is working, but I still don’t like how it feels once it’s dried compared to blow drying. Thanks for that bit of knowledge!
*Products Combo's for Hair and Scalp, Being Gentle* . As a 57yro., 2B fine wavy, low density, high porosity gal, I totally agree with you. Menopausal and post-covid hair loss took me into next level hair and scalp care. I stopped coloring and let the grays come in which created a new texture to deal with. I embraced my natural texture and went to diffusing over heat styling. I never fully embraced the CGM but pulled some "best practices" that worked for me. As a fine wavy, brush styling caused a lot of mechanical damage. I recently incorporated bond builders and protein containing products, it's helping with breakage. For stylers, products with chitosan seem to work really well. I need hold and structure without weight. Keeping a wash day/styling routine diary was very helpful for me. I'm super gentle with my, I want to preserve every precious strand. ~ Thank you Abbey
You’re absolutely AMAZING! I love how informative you are and how you give examples and reasons to support your thoughts on these topics. You have definitely helped me to better understand the hair world and I’ve seen so much improvement in my hair and scalp health since following along with your channel! Like you, I also have an oily scalp and your recommendations have helped tremendously! Great work👏❤
I'm so glad that I am no longer demonizing drugstore haircare products and specific ingredients (sulfates and silicones). I've been testing out the Amika The Kure line and while I do love the mask, I don't think I get a very good cleanse from the shampoo. The conditioner is nice, but not any better than the new Pantene Pro-V Miracles Bond Repair Keratin + Vitamin E conditioner that I've also been testing. And sectioning out your hair to make sure you're getting each strand with a leave-in product is key! I currently rotate between the Ouai Detox Shampoo (which is okay for me) and the 4U by Tia Clarifying Shampoo (I really like this one!). I used the L'Oreal Everpure Bond Strengthening line for a while, but I'm not crazy about the smell of that one...
Thinking about Pantene label (volume instead of clarifying), I remembered what my cousin (she is a hair stylist) told me years ago - the most voluminous (hope that's a word in English haha) hair is the cleanest hair, so most Volume shampoos are just very good at cleansing. For example, at that time I used Loreal Professionel Volume shampoo, which had salicylic acid among the ingredients to boost the cleansing properties. And as someone with oily scalp and long and completely flat hair, I really appreciate this combo haha
Would love a video of your favorite hair tools. Like favorite dryers and styling tools etc. I’ve seen you use so many different ones but not sure which you’d recommend above others
I've spent years trying to figure out my hair, ever since I was a kid. You're the first hair guru that actually helped me take care of my specific hair type and have the healthiest hair ever. Thank you so much! 😊
Such great info Abby. I am filling my adult daughter's Easter Basket with some of my favorite scalp and hair products! We have the same type of hair/scalp concerns.
2:02 hi! Wdym by these things don’t influence the health of our scalp? One of the things I hear the most from dermatologists is how (just as an example) chemically straightening your hair can harm the skin of your scalp! Since the product needs to be applied to the growing roots, it is almost impossible to not touch the scalp (even if the professional could do the unrealistic and do that, the chemicals would still get in touch with your scalp, since our hair strands usually “go down” and naturally touch some skin)! I just used chemical straightening as an example, but other hair procedures people do can fit this scenario!
Loving all of your hair care videos..thanks so much for sharing all this info with us...I have oily scalp and dry strands and I tried a gentle mild shampoo from someone's recommendation and boy what a disaster..it barely cleaned my scalp but instead made it greasier and flatter..I definitely learned my lesson that scalp and rest of hair are not the same and might need different types of hair products.
I've gone through 1 big bottle of Pantene Volume Shampoo because of you...I am now on my second one! My hair feels very clean! Oh and I also use the OGX coconut oil pre shampoo too, and I alternate between Olaplex 3 and K18 and I finish off with Olaplex 7 bonding oil! Oh and I also use Purology 21 Color fanatic leave in conditioner! My hair is the longest that it's ever been!
I watch you videos and I pay attention, but I just stare at your bookshelf and hair. And you always have a perfect lip. Never too glossy or too matte. Do you have a “holy grails” video?
Finally someone that says Pantene is a favourite. It’s what my mom has always used. It smells amazing (which is why I always loved smelling her hair) and she has such strong full hair.
I am on a binge of all your videos and I’m obsessed. Can you do a video of what to do about/for postpartum hair loss? If there’s any products that may help to prevent it, or may help hair grow back faster?
So so many great pieces of wisdom here - loads clicking into place from this! The air drying greasiness, the difference between scalp and hair needs...I definitely need to stop trying to "train" my hair to go for once a week washes (sob!) because it really is giving me flaking.
Why is no one questioning If conditioner is actually bad to be applied near scalp ?? Like I want to apply it all over my hair including my head area so I don't get ugly flyaways or the hair seems rougher near scalp then ends. Like when I go to the salon they always apply it on scalp and give a massage etc.. would be awesome Abby if u can give ur opinion, since you're studying in that field.
I think it’s standard to not apply conditioner to your scalp because for most people it would weigh down your hair too much. Depending on your hair type and type of conditioner used, it could also make the top of your head look greasy.
You can put conditioner on the upper part of your head. But if you have an oily scalp don't use a conditioner that leaves more oil. Do what is best for you
Thanks for all the helpful tips! Curious to hear your insight on bleach - I’ve been reading one way to protect your hair before bleaching is to use coconut oil to coat the hair strand prior to your appointment. Would love to hear your thoughts/experience! Thanks Abby!
Hair Buddha has videos on this. Coconut oil will reduce the potency of the bleach because it coats the hair reducing the contact of the bleach with the hair. This means the hair will have to be bleached twice if only one was originally needed.
I had to change stylist because she insisted on using a METAL round brush to blowdry, combined with a high heat setting. After switching to a stylist who is using a plastic brush and low heat I can tell my hair has way less damage. Stylists need to LISTEN!
Can you PLEASE review Halo hair extensions (I know you don’t wear them put maybe you could try them??) and talk about hair extensions in general? I’ve considered the Great Lengths extensions that stylists swear when properly installed do not cause hair loss but I’m worried and I want your insight! Thanks
Can you do a full tutorial from start to finish on washing, conditioning the hair and styling the hair with your air wrap? I have chronic health problems so I had emergency neck surgery in December and I have a large cage in my neck so I am trying to do my hair in less time without struggling too much. I bought the Dyson at full price & I can’t figure it out. My hair is long a little shorter than yours but I have curly frizzy hair (like Damon noodles) so I’m struggling on what I need for my hair & how to style it. Thank you for all your knowledge! Been on your channel for many years now. ❤❤❤
Heey Abbey 🩷 Can you please talk about build up on your ends? If we’re using oils, leave ins etc and have shampoos/conditioners leaving a film, do we at some point, need to be shampooing our ends? Sometimes it feels like my ends are so full of product but I’m reluctant to shampoo it!
To your point about using products for something different than what’s listed, I always avoided volume shampoos because my hair is poofy and curly-I have enough volume! However, I recently discovered that volume shampoos cleanse my fine hair the best because that’s the kind of hair they’re meant for. I’m sad that I missed out on a truly clean scalp because of a single word on the label!
The air drying thing still doesn’t make sense to me. If the study says that hair loses sebum as the days go by between washes (and gets greasier in the process), but air drying makes the scalp lose sebum at a slower rate, then by this calculation, air drying makes hair LESS greasy than blowing… These comments are also on the reel you made about the study, would appreciate any clarification! 🫶🏼
I watched this part of the video several times, because was confused by the exact same thing. I understood this section in the same way - if air drying, the hair gets greasy slower. I saw Abby sharing this section in one of her other videos as well. I would like to read a bit bigger section, to understand the context. Just this way, cut out, I get opposite impression of what she is saying in video.
@@sirtsupirtsu yes same! some people have looked into the whole study and still feel that the conclusion is the opposite of what abbey is saying. It is down to personal experience at the end of the day though
I think Abbey is confused. She states that her hair always looked “so greasy” the day after air drying but it didn’t happen when she blew dry her hair. According to the research she cited, that is the opposite effect of what would be expected.
Yeah cant say air drying has that issue, i would have thought blow drying would dry out the hair though that might be why it was less greasy or she used same products when airdrying which you wouldnt need....
I think she means loses it from the hair more slowly, therefore there is more sebum left on the scalp to make it greasy vs blow drying, that takes sebum away quicker making it less greasy?
What about if your hair is coloured? What shampoo would you use? I obviously use Color shampoo But what if your scalp needs a detox? You don’t want to strip my hair. What would you recommend?
To Australians, the Pantene Volume & Body is something we do have here but it's marketed differently and looks different, it's called 'Sheer Volume'. I checked the ingredients :) We don't have some other lines here, but the Loreal bond repair we do have is still very good and chemist warehouse often has 50% off sales on the products. I stock up on multiple during the sale. I love their pre-shampoo treatment, but do use it after shanpooing and get great results with no residue. I hope this helps any fellow Aussies! Thanks Abbey!
Can you please do an honest review of Monat Products? I’ve been seeing them all over Instagram and TikTok and it seems too good to be true. Love your videos and recommendations!
They are too good to be true. It's a pyramid scheme company, meaning they want you go join the company to sell products and make them money. Just a few years ago their products made the headlines for making people's hair fall out in clumps
I would really love to know what kind of non product things are damaging to your hair. I get mixed messages. For example, is sleeping in a pineapple loose bun bad for your hair? Is a loose braid better? Is using a scalp massager in the shower damaging? How should I properly use it? Also is brushing your products gently in the shower damaging? Thanks for all your info.
I used to only use Olaplex stand alone treatments for bond building. I didn’t want to spend money on two bond builders. I started going to a salon to get highlights, but I had damage from a color correction and years of at home bleaching. Even with other Olaplex products my hair wasn’t improving, it helped a lot but it reached a point where I still had breakage and would leave the salon (highlight every 3 months) with damaged hair. I finally sucked it up and bought K18. My hair finally felt somewhat “normal” again and my stylist saw a difference. I still use both, but in my experience my hair was so damaged that Olaplex wasn’t enough.
I’m not someone who usually leave comments, but I wanted to say thank you! I feel like you are one of the only beauty “influencers” who I can trust because your opinions are backed on science, and I can genuinely say that my hair has changed for the better since I started watching your content. We love a a girl who knows what she’s talking about!✨🦋
Hi! I loved the video and I wanted to share some of my experience. On social media everyone is raving about squish to condish as a technique to apply conditioner and I used to do it on my 3a hair. I don’t like it, it doesn’t do much for my hair except getting conditioner on my scalp and even stripping off the henna I use to colour my hair. So I guess it’s true, everyone should try things that make sense and stick to the ones that work for them😊❤️
My favorite thing I have learned from all of the valuable information you have shared through your videos is that Pantene Body Shampoo is a great quality, safe, excellent performing shampoo. I have loved it for years, actually decades, and am fed up with it being (famously) trashed and labled poor quality "drugstore" shampoo. You are such an intelligent lady and passionate about your research. Thank you!!!
I always learn so much when I watch your videos. I look at it as “hair” education. I have made some changes over the last year as well as new products based on my hair type and your suggestions and everything so far has been very positive. Another change I will make starting today is discontinuing air drying my hair!
It’s crazy because I had amazing hair in my 20’s and 30’s and there was no social media. I didn’t have any crazy routines, slept on a cotton pillow case, used drug store shampoo and conditioner. Now I do all the tops and tricks and my hair is in the worst shape ever. Might just be because I have fine hair and I’m 46. Either way I love all the tips and research you always provide.
Hair and skin changes texture throughout our lives, that may be why your hair is not in the best shape. Perhaps if you are taking any medications now that you weren’t when you were younger, that can also affect your hair in lots of ways. Hair also thins out and turns dryer and wirier, especially when gray hairs are coming in. Perhaps you need to change products, or use a variety of different products so that the hair doesn’t get “immune” to it.
I have extremely oily hair and even with some tweaks and changes. To my hair care routine I’m still struggling. It’s nice to know all of the information on how to properly wash my oily scalp. As I now know it’s not that my hair is just oily and that is very likely an underlying health issue that is make my scalp and other areas so greasy/oily/sweaty.
Yes! Found one of my people for sure. I can never air dry my hair! It makes it soooo greasy! I’be learned if I dry the roots, then air drying the rest is usually fine for me!
Sooo true!!
YES to a video where you explain claims / words to look for on products in order to get a different result than the one that's listed on them 🙌
will add to my list!! xx
That would be sooooooo good! :) This way, we would know better what the heck it is we're buying or looking for.
Yes!
The air drying info is incredible! I’d love to see a vid on how to healthy blow dry and layer products and how to preserve it
My hair never grew past my shoulders. I air dried it and took good care of it. Then I started to blow dry my roots after every shower. And my hair grew long. So for my hair it was the best ting ever to blow dry the hair. And now its really long 😊
I’ll dry my hair a bit first then let the air dry most of it and. Stopped using a curling iron
@@susanjaderberg690did you use any heat protection before using? I might give this a try!
@@celestinac1105 I wish I used more heatprotection but I dident 😅 but it grew long and healthy anyway :-) But now I do use it :-)
Have you watched her hair wash routine videos? She kind of addresses those concerns. She let's her hair dry about 80% before she uses a blow dryer. Also microfiber towel. Then she puts her products in and uses a hair dryer. 😊
Thank you for this video! I’m a wavy haired girl that’s left behind a lot of the cgm “rules” because, quite frankly, those silicones and sulfates work for my hair! My hair is so much longer, healthier, and less prone to impossible-to-untangle knots than it ever was when I avoided using those.
Same🔥
Same! Which shampoos and conditioners do you like?
If anything, I find my hair gets more tangly and frizzy when I've used that in the past (after a first wash or two that goes super well, it goes downhill for me pretty quickly.)
I hope this helps!
I have type 4 hair so this advice is universal (for me)
Could you make a video about how you blow dry and style your hair without damage?
yes! we need it ❤
Hair fact that I wish I knew sooner is the difference between a clarifying shampoo and one that also has chelating properties.
This is great! Just finished reading "Health and Beauty Mastery" - what an eye-opener! This book helped me with my routines so much.
I heard about that
it's a scam
I think the reason blow drying helps with grease is because it gives volume so the hair isn’t sitting as flat to the scalp, aka the source of the oil.
This!! And when you air dry, your hair is trying to maintain as much moisture as possible which can lead to greasy looking hair. more so when its fine and thin
🎯
Cant say it affects mine but then it dries really quickly so maybe that helps?
I like the curl cream as a leave in for frizzy ends and the oil is very oily so you need a literal drop.
kristen ess has a great fragrance free line!
Please please do a video on a hair loss/ thinning related to hormones / post-pregnancy / perimenopause.... if you feel like you can speak to effective treatments as I KNOW if is super super complex.... scalp health ; ))) not length health! TY
Yes please!!
No idea if you were on prenatal, but sometimes ceasing taking them after pregnancy leads to an increase in shedding.
@@easilysunburntyeah the vitamin change is essentially irrelevant, it is the fluctuations in our hormones that cause the increase shedding. Mostly because the elevated progesterone results in reduced shedding during pregnancy.
I bought the Pantene volume + body shampoo and omg!! My hair feels so clean soft and light weight 😍😍😍
I just tried this one today. And yes! My hair is super soft, clean, and has a lot of movement. I used it with the L’Oréal glossing treatment and conditioner and it’s the best hair day I’ve had in AGES.
@@rebeccar628is it possible to use on a regular base or just once a time (for instance once in every 3 hair washes)?
I zoomed in to read some of the titles.
Thank you!
What products are you using ?
for the longest time i’ve had a huge fear of drugstore products because of the fact that one time i used some that irritated my scalp and eventually lead to my hair falling out (i have a really sensitive scalp so thats why it got irritated i suppose), but overtime i eventually decided to try drugstore products again, so i used elvive which was my favorite as a child AND LET ME TELL YOU, THE CONDITIONER IS BETTER THAN MY 30$ CONDITIONER AT DETANGLING. And detangling has been my biggest problem for so long, so thank you so much abbey for reviewing the product and making me consider buying it, im looking forward to trying more of your recommendations so please keep posting lmao 😭❤
On hair product application:
I have super thin and fine hair and little of it- I struggle with severe chronic illness and thus- MAJOR hair loss 😭
My hair density is very slim, and I actually find it HARD to use leave in conditioners that are sprays, because it sprays right through the gaps between my hair strands and around my strands (if that makes sense). All of my hair barely fills a small pony tail… so I often have to spray leave in conditioners into my HANDS and apply it that way, or else none of my hair gets coated 🙏🏻💗
I never liked sprays anyway- I’d rather apply with my hands and make sure I’m getting 360 degree coverage!!! 💗💗💗
Love you, Abbey!
You changed my hair and have helped me keep what I have left, healthy!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰
❤❤❤
I have very similar hair due to the exact reasons!! What shampoo and conditioner do you use? I’ve been so upset with all the hair loss 😭
🤦🏻♀️what a 🤡
THANK YOU for taking an evidence & research based approach and being open minded to update your views. After watching your videos my hair is so much better, but I also realise how many influencers are giving wrong information..
Can you do a video on brush care? How to wash them, how often? What to look for in a brush?
💖 thank you. I'm 57 with wavy/curly hair. I didn't learn how to take care of my hair until 2020. This video really helped me realize I need to treat my scalp differently. My strands are coarse and dry. My scalp tends to get more oily. The thing is, this video showed me that I absolutely am over moisturizing my scalp with my shampoo for dry strands. 💡💖
I have fine blonde hair. The blowout professor recommended Redken’s volume injection set and it has been such a game changer for my hair.
Me too! A game changer
Where can I get this from? I’m in 🇬🇧

@@MadamchiefOh yeah? I am glad to hear this😅, I tried for the first time only yesterday , based on the recommendation of the Blowout Professor.
The well water i used to have had too much iron and was terrible for my hair but now in the suburbs my hairs been much better.

Maybe we shouldn't talk in absolutes...

Yay! I'm so glad you love xx
Which Pureology do you like?
@@sheilah.8137 the purple is my fav....LOVE IT...everything about it! Smells divine too
@@sheilah.8137I use Pureology Strength Cure. The shampoo and conditioner are both great!

Please, do a scalp care videos. I’m also confused about at home gloss + bonding + keratin + dry oil treatments.
Spent so much money on these “profesional shampoos”, but the conclusion is they were too “strong” for my sensitive scalp that was actually dry 🙂
So i went back to sls free shampoos and instead of using “volumizing” or “clarifying” or anything that says to be for oily scalp, i switched those to more hydrating, moisturizing or restoring shampoos.
Listening to just influencers has ruined my hair (and i’ve tried almost everything!), but turns out i needed to stop for a moment and look differently at the situation ❤
I agree about the air drying!! My hair lasts/looks so much better throughout the week if I take the time to properly blow it out.
I started using that Pantene shampoo based on your experience and I love it!! I also have an oily scalp that needs a deep cleaning shampoo
yay!! so glad you love it
Another great video Abbey! I have learned so much watching your channel. I would love some recommendations for dry scalp. Also I would love a video on menopausal changes in hair as I am dealing with that now.
Yay! So glad to hear that. Will add these to my list xx
Tip number one blew my mind. I’ve always reached for dry hair shampoo because my end are dry but I too have the oily scalp. I’ve literally been using the wrong shampoo! Thank you so much for telling us.
As a fellow Minnesotan your hair color is LOVELY. I watched the salon video. The dimension of blonde is so nice!!!!!!
Yesss exactly! and thank you so much xx
I watched your shower day routine and I’ve been following religiously. It has been a MAJOR game changer for my hair! It’s better than ever ❤
I’d love to hear your advice on the best way to secure thick hair during workouts.
8:30 creamy and pearly shampoos def will weight it down that’s why I like clear gel shampoos
I’d love an episode of ingredients to look for in shampoo, conditioner, mask etc etc to get great hair. Include the curly hair method.
May I ask what stylers you use? I believe I have very similar hair.
Your idea for a video focus on misleading words and what to look for sounds great Please make one, love your content ❤
Would love a video of your favorite hair tools. Like favorite dryers and styling tools etc. I’ve seen you use so many different ones but not sure which you’d recommend above others
Yes Abbey! PLEASE do that video on hair care ingredients!! 🙏
"Your hair couldn't even breathe even if it wanted to" 😂
Can you do a whole video on preventing mechanical damage? I desperately need protective styles for putting hair back for running, etc
Do what is best for you
@@daisiesx96 rinse, rinse, rinse!
@@jacicovington8982 lmao. yeah, you dont get it.
Thanks
Laineymariebeauty just did a review of them a week or two ago.
If the study says that hair loses sebum as the days go by between washes (and gets greasier in the process), but air drying makes the scalp lose sebum at a slower rate, then by this calculation, air drying makes hair LESS greasy than blowing…
These comments are also on the reel you made about the study, would appreciate any clarification!
I'd be really interested to see a video about those hair myths and debunking them.
What about if your hair is coloured? What shampoo would you use? I obviously use Color shampoo But what if your scalp needs a detox? You don’t want to strip my hair. What would you recommend?
love to see content on your thoughts on using satin bonnets and their benefits! x
I would LOVE a video discussing Monat.. could be a little controversial but I’m here for it 😏
Love your content! You do such an amazing job 👏 For when you run out of ideas, please, explain how to address menopause hair loss 😵💫❤❤❤
Thank you so much! And will add to my list xx
So agree with the air drying! I have curly/wavy dry hair and hate how my hair looks when i use a blow dryer.
I’m not someone who usually leave comments, but I wanted to say thank you! We love a a girl who knows what she’s talking about!✨🦋
Don't mind me, just commenting for the algorithm (and also a video on marketing words and claims sound great!!)
Hahaha thank you for watching & commenting! xx
Thank you for continuing to inform your audience about the science and how important it is to educate ourselves.
