  • Recently I have been asked about the inlace acrylester blanks and how they turn. To this point I had never turned one so I decided it was time to give it a try. I purchased a blank from Woodturningz and this video chronicles how it went.

I have been holding out on turning this stuff. Being a new turner, I have stuck with wood and alumilite. I ordered a hybrid blank that has mica in the alumilite and turned it recently. It was my biggest challenge by far. It dulled all my standard tools and chipped out around the junctions. Long story short, it turned out great, but man I'll have to second guess turning the other half. Great video, thanks for sharing.

    Great job on it!
As a heads up, you can fill the little voids/bubbles, chips, etc. with a little medium CA, they are pretty much invisible after being polished down. Also, in my experience, using a roughing gouge is a bad idea. It chips and cracks more often than not. Use a skew for best results (this is also what Woodturningz recommends). Finally, while the money blank is a neat idea, to see the biggest reason to use inlace, use a blank with some color swirling and pearlescence. It produces some amazing depth of color.

Bob, and others....I have a question. I'll bet it's been answered elsewhere. But, here I go....
I'm a bit conflicted here. We know to scuff up the brass tubes before using CA (or epoxy) to insert into the blank.
Yet, if I were to PAINT the tube, would that negate the roughness of the tube? Wouldn't the paint fill in the scratches on the tube, thereby removing the benefit of scuffing?
So, how do you retain the scuffed up nature of the tubes, even when a tube has been painted? (I guess I need to go hunting for other UA-cam videos that show the tubes being painted.)
Keep up your stellar work, kind sir! You are educating thousands of us with each of your highly-anticipated videos!
    Larry

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  5 років тому

      Thank you Larry,
I scuff the tube then paint them. The paint is not perfectly smooth so it sticks well.

      Bob

I just noticed something on one of your older videos. This is not the first inlace acrylester blank you have turned on the "Turning a Dragon Pen" Video at 1:48 the tag on the blank says Inlace Acrylester Jester. I can imagine it would be hard to remember what you have turned and what you have not with as many pens and you turn in a month, let alone a year. For those that need this clarification, before you get angry and call me a troll. I hold Bob in the highest respect, I see him as a master and possible pen turning mentor. I just found this discovery funny, I'm not picking on the pen master.

Now that I have seen the actual video I think I tend to agree with you, the brass tube being visible does detract from the look of the pen. Having said that I do still think it looks good and would be worth pressing into a kit, the green and gold do at least work together/make sense together in the overall theme of the blank

I couldn't help but notice when you were drilling the blank that the drill bit appeared to get quite hot. Fearing that it would be possible to melt portions of the blank that will lead to "bubbles or voids" in the blank, I will spray water on the drill when I retract it to clear the chips. I haven't had any problems doing this or am I being overly cautious? It does take more time and somewhat messy but I feel better doing it this way.

I always tell people you can never be to cautious. These pens take a lot of time and effort to make, if you have a process that is working for you then it is a good process and you should continue using it. I have had other turners tell me they use water too.

My wife likes the maroon with gold highlights, and I presented a pen to a guy made of the black with gold highlights. Take very light cuts to avoid creating pits - plan on taking 10 full minutes to go from square to round. Also wet sand with only micromesh, and do this very lightly.

Once you turn it round with the roughing gouge, it's safe to use a 2" radius carbide tool, but never come at it with a round carbide. It will chip out 100% of the time.

If you happen to live near a Federal Reserve Bank, many of them will give sample bags of shredded money for free, that you can make your own blanks from. A word of caution, old currency like this is dirty and nasty, and I would definitely wear breathing protection during the entire process!!
