  • This was a tedious but rewarding turn. Inlace Acrylester blanks are beautiful you just need to take your time when turning them.

    I really like the way these blanks turn out when they've been polished Bob, I've turned several of them and they nearly always present a challenge when being turned. Very sharp tool and light cuts is definitely the way to go!! Another great looking pen Bob!!

    Lovely work bob! I made the mistake of trying to make a pen out of acrylester when I was starting off and had only turned 1 acrylic blank before. Terrifying to turn, but look great when polished!

    I love acrylester when polished and finished, but its one of the toughest materials to work with. I did an ocean mist from Rockler and had major chip out and no matter how small passes i took with my carbide tips, I still had small chips everywhere. I ended up getting rid of the small chips by sanding for a while, but at the end it turned out beautiful

      Thank you Uriel,
      Carbide is so sharp and aggressive with its cuts that it is hard to use on certain materials. I don’t have any luck with it on plastics. I do like it for wood pen blanks.

    Pretty pen Bob. I've noticed, (now don't think I'm loosing it), that Acrylester blanks are more brittle the darker the color of the blank Black, dark blue, dark green are extremely btittle and "flaky" to turn.

    Nice piece Bob. I think a portion of your difficulty in the roughing is that the mandrel isn't running true, i.e., its bent. I noticed it when you were slowly rotating it toward the end to show the end result. As a machinist I have the luxury of roughing my blanks on a metal lathe where I can take down high spots @ 0.010 per pass. I get close and then transfer to the wood lathe, a newly acquired machine which I am "learning" to use. The learning curve is steep and while I've never ruined a blank when I was doing everything on a metal lathe, I've had the frustration of destroying, shall we say, more than one blank on the wood lathe. Love your instructional videos and as a new pen turner with 30 or 35 pens completed and ZERO woodworking experience I'm soaking it up.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому +1

      +Steve Jackson Thank you Steve,
      I'm in need of a new mandrel, I made this one from part of an old one and a Jacobs chuck. Once between the head and tail stock it's true. This one was off because I sanded it by hand on the belt sander and got to aggressive, LOL. I need to make a jig for taking the corners off.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Hi @RJBWoodTurner, Let me start by saying, thank you for all your videos. They are really entertaining and you can really see that you enjoy doing what you do which I'm assuming plays a big role on why you are so good at it. I had a question, I took a class on pen turning, which really didn't go into detail as far as technique when turning and even though I have manage to turn about 20-30 pens as birthdays, Christmas and just because gifts, I am having a hard time with having to do a ton of sanding because or sometimes even ruining the blank because the tool leaves this huge grooves when turning. This happens only sometimes, I am sure there is something I am doing wrong. If is not too much to ask, could you do a video of your technique when turning? When you turn your blanks it looks as if you are turning a butter pen blank with a warm butter knife.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому +1

      +chupagoat69 Without knowing about your tools, My first reaction is they may be dull. Dull tools cause you to press harder to turn causing tool marks, sometimes deep ones.
      No matter how good your technique is, you can't turn smoothly with a dull tool.
      If your using Carbide, try rotating the cutter to a new section.
      When your cutting move your whole body not just your arms or the tool. Doing this will give you more control and with that comes a lighter touch on the blank.
      Let me know if any of this helps and we can go from there to see if we can help you with your turnings.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Woot first like and comment, awesome video, the pen looks fantastic.
    About gluing in the tube. I watched a video, I cannot remember who, but he said to put the glue on the inside the blank because if you put it on the tube, the blank with scrape off the majority of the glue when you put it in the hole. Have you ever noticed a problem or a difference in the two ways?

    • @edwardchapman1914
      @edwardchapman1914 7 років тому +1

      Nice job, do you do castings yourself also? I have been toying the idea around of getting a little vacume chamber for stabilizing spalted blanks.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +Shaun Kennedy I've always wondered about that. When I put the glue inside the blank, as the tube goes in, the glue gets scraped into the tube. That causes issues with bushings and pen parts and you end up filing it out. That's been my experience. I say make two blanks and try it both ways. Whatever works best for you it the best way.
      Regards,
      Bob

I made a vacuum chamber from a second hand shop that had thick walled pot and a pump from a old O2 pump. I can pull 29 inches vac with it. You will love downing stabilizing once you start. When I get close to the bushings my blank always cracks any tips? (only acryelester)

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  5 років тому

      Hello Trenton,
      Before you glue you’re tube into your blank. Make sure it’s a tight fit. If the end has slop in it it will crack or chip out.
      When barrels trimming the blank, ensure the barrel trimmer has no resistance before performing the operation. If there is resistance, it will stretch the brass tube and stress the blank causing cracking.
      After the tube is glued in, and the glue has dried, use a small file to clean out any glue residue inside the tubes.
      I also purchased a debut ring tool off eBay and once the inside of the tube is cleaned up, I deburr it.
      If it cracks before taking it off the lathe, are you using activator? If so stop.
      Make sure you have perfect alignment before pressing any parts into the blank. Misaligned parts will stretch the brass tube and crack the blank.
      I hope something here helps.
      Regards,
      Bob

    Recently I have had CA finish problems. Is it possible to have the shop too cold? It looks good until I sand and polish to 12000 grit. I have put on as many as 10 coats of CA. Some spots look great with others look like nothing has stuck on the wood. Could it be moisture?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +Steve Budge I can't be 100% sure without inspecting the blank but moisture would be my first guess.

      Probably too late to help Steve But if anyone else is having similar issue with CA --large cloudy patches OR ghosting as it is often called, has 2 main causes 1) oil in the wood -some woods are oily like cocobollo 2) its a dull spot from all the CA being sanded off - usually a bent mandrel or bouncy lathe - the reason 10 coats work is when you sand 8 coats of CA off on the high part of the mandrel you still have 2 coats of CA to buff and look shinny BUT if you only apply 6-8 coats then that spot is bare of CA and looks ghosted or cloudy Its called sand through

      @@RJBWoodTurner okay, I def am not comfy with the skew! I need to practice of a dud of material, in the mean time, I stopped working on the Acrylester until I can get a Bench Grinder. I really need one. I wish I could enter into a game to win one! I rounded out one blank, but it dulled my tool so much!
