    Its very interesting to see how orchid lovers grow them in different media and different conditions . I live in the tropics and have never grown in semi hydro . I grow on my balcony . I would have placed the the entire ‘thing’ in a clay pot with charcoal and a small amount of moss and they would thrive . Once again my growing conditions and climate are completely different. Good luck with your repots . You did a great job 🤗👏👍

    Stephen van Kampen-Lewis shared a video regarding getting Cattleyas to bloom by placing them in total, uninterrupted darkness for 6-8 hours a night. He said the tiniest interruption could prevent it from blooming, if it’s a difficult orchid. I think, in the multitudes of these videos I’ve perused over the last few weeks, I ran across one of yours about a beautiful Cattleya you’ve had for three years that hasn’t bloomed yet. Thought I would just throw that out there, in appreciation for all the great information you share. I really appreciate all you do!😊

    I'm new to orchids and am discovering that a lot of orchid growing is a combination of personal preference and environment. I like having the extra ventilation slits in the repotme pots. So far I haven't had any roots escape the pots. I added ventilation holes to the pots that my Walmart phals came in and the Matsui nursery oncidium and phals that I bought from Trader Joe's came with a lot of ventilation holes. I have one potinara that I repotted last night as it started new roots and there was nowhere for them to go inside the pot. I only had a 5 inch pot so I put it in bark and perlite instead of bark/moss/ perlite like all of my other plants. I grow under a variety of lights from Amazon and noticed that the growths have taken on a purple color that wasn't there when I bought the plant a few weeks ago. Hopefully that's a good sign.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  9 місяців тому +1

      The purple color is usually anthocyanin production which is when the orchid is basically getting a tan and getting used to the lights :)

    Have you considered adding a drop of dish soap to water when you are watering in new bark? I used to do that years ago and it was highly recommended by some growers. It breaks the surface tension of the bark to allow a bit more absorption.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  10 місяців тому

      If it's not blooming it usually comes down to the light. Eastern window may not be enough, do you have any access to a southern window where you can put a sheer curtain to give them very bright indirect light? If not, a grow light should help. Good luck, it sounds like everything else is perfect, just need to get the light a bit brighter (but don't put them in intense direct sun).

    Hi Nicole. I enjoyed watching your repots. I have a large Cattleya that needs repotting. I’ve been putting it off she’s already filled up a 5 inch pot and I was thinking of dividing it. Great rebloomer for me so I’m hesitant to divide. Or put it in a 6 inch pot. What to do? 😂 Have a great Easter 🐣🤗🐇

    I'm a newbie and deciding what set ups to do. Looking into semi hydro. Can you give some advice on whether you prefer semi hydro or moss and bark? I would really appreciate it. I love your videos and your collection is just goals! Some guidance would be awesome. No pressure! 😂🤣🥴🥴😆

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  Рік тому +1

      In the long run I actually prefer moss and bark. I've found that semi hydro works well for my cattleyas, but over time some of my other orchids have declined in Semi Hydro. For example - some of my phals and vandas. I'm going to move everythign to bark and moss in the longer run. Semi hydro was a great long term experiment, but bark and moss seems like a safer bet for different kinds of orchids and species.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 Рік тому

    Well, I was going to take my Ctt Tristar Bouquet out of its pot and mount it in the tree (since I have several holes to fill following the hurricane). I spent half an hour trying to free it and said forget it. I'm not breaking that pot, if it doesn't want to come out, so be it.
    I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the kiwi bark a couple months from now. If those plants are anything like mine, they will be well on their way to filling the pots. At least if they go root crazy now, you can just slip pot them in the fall or spring rather than doing a full repot.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  Рік тому

      I think I'm done spending hours trying to free one orchid unless it's a a really prized species. I still have so many repotme slit pots left and when they are done - never again 😂
      My phals so far pushed insane roots with just moss. I have a feeling my cattleyas are going to love the bark moss mix this year!

  • @janicelindegard6615
    @janicelindegard6615 Рік тому

    I didn't repot my phals that were in leca often enough! I guess I took the "set it and forget it" idea too far. Most of my orchids are back in organic media. I, too, like adding some moss to the bark mix.

    I was watching one of your videos can't remember which one. I commented on it saying I transplanted my orchid and was doing really well but then everything stopped. I took it apart again and the bottom of the orchid was black I removed all the dead roots and snipped anything that was black. I used the moss fluffed it up and put it back in. Do you think I should have used some bark too? Do you think it will come along? Please let me know!

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 місяці тому

      Potting media really depends on environment, if you're in a really humid environment, something airy is usually safer. Do note though that cattleyas sometimes dump their old roots, so it's possible that the old roots died off instead of rotted due to overwatering / too much moisture. I would just determine if those were new or old roots, if they were old it's ok, it's normal, if they were new, then bark would be better for you or if you're sticking with fluffy moss, just water less often, water when dry

    Don’t you water if not for time being, then after how long . How about pitting some week spray the leaves an pour some on the pot, I hear a lot about pouring garlic solution of the pat around the plant itself?

    I don’t know if you will see this comment since it has been 5 months since you posted this video, but I have a repotting dilemma and would appreciate your thoughts. I have just been gifted a friend’s whole collection of orchids. There is a variety with many being brassavolas (some Richard Mueller 😊) and cattleyas. The bark media in most is really broken down so they need to be repotted, but I’m hesitant to repot when it is autumn and there’s no sign of new root growth. Will repotting a cattleya when there is no active growth do more harm than good?

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  10 місяців тому

      Hi Linda! Congrats on the new additions! I would wait till you see new roots on them before repotting. Many can be repotted, but the issue with cattleyas is that the roots are so sensitive that after repotting some will dump their old roots. So I'd leave them be till you see new roots, and usually many do grow year round so you'll be able to slowly get to them through the fall / winter I think even if it's not the "season"

    • @lindaannb
      @lindaannb 10 місяців тому

      Thanks so much for your speedy reply! You have helped me avoid setting them back or even killing them. I didn’t have any cattleyas before my friend’s generous gift, but I have watched enough of your videos to know their roots are sensitive. I didn’t realize that they have some root growth year round so that’s encouraging. In the meantime, I’m going to be watching many more of your older videos on cattleyas and dendrobiums!
