- Today I’m repotting two of my phal orchids into Sphagnum Moss. I’ll walk you through the way I use this medium successfully to grow roots without Suffocating them

Thank you! I water as the orchid approaches dryness. In my environment that could be once a week for a larger 6 inch pot in the winter, or 2-3 times a week for a 3 inch pot. You really just have to get a feel for when it dries out which will be different in each environment. Smaller pot sizes always dry faster

Whenever I put an orchid in Sphagnum, they start to have white fluffy hairs all over the roots (and no, those are no root hairs). It appears especially on root parts that are slightly "damaged". But most frequently on top of the moss itself, covering the top part of the roots. What sort of mold is that? Anyone ever observed it?

I have three Phal Orchids that I've been trying to save and with trying bark and also water culture, they've done better in water culture but I really want to get them in sphagnum moss!! Is it possible for them to go from water culture to moss, any advice would be appreciated, new subbie btw!!😊🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for watching ☺️ yes! You can definitely move them from water culture to moss and I don't think they will be too shocked either since moss is so moisture retentive. Phals really enjoy moss in my environment and I keep the moss nice and fluffy. Let me know how it goes 😊

Hello! I recently got my first phal ever it's a brother Sara gold and she's huge! (She was very dry so I watered no fertilizer though will fertilize next watering). I noticed she has a basal keiki that's pretty large coming off the stem which is very exciting! But, this large phal is in a 2.5" pot and the root system is looking very congested and "suffocated" (the roots are pushing on the pot she's in very hard, so I got high quality sphagnum moss and a 4.75" orchid pot) wish I could post a pic! Should I repot her as soon as possible? (she's currently in bloom and has 2 spikes and many buds/ a few opened blossoms) I was thinking of repotting and feeding next time I water in about 4-6 days, she looks like she needs a repot pretty badly.
If the roots look suffocated, it's best to repot and size up the pot a but. 2.5" is small for a large Phal. 4"-5" should be suitable for an upgrade. Thanks for watching!
With the wetting wick, do you still need to water the orchid? Also, the store bought orchids are tightly packed and some do have a rotting root problem but most of them don't. Doesn't that mean the orchid actually is doing fine and leave them be?
I like to repot them because I find they come too tightly bound for my liking. I stopped using the wick, and just water as it's approaching dryness
