- If you have a LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Raynor, or a variation of the belt drive garage door motor from the Chamberlain corporation then this video should help. It will provide you with pro-tips to replace your belt assembly. In most cases it can be done within 5 minutes.
There's also a great video from my friend and colleague Richard Cornell from Cornell Garage Doors in Austin, TX that offers some great pro tips on how to retrofit a belt assembly. You can check that out here:

Thanks! 2 years later and your video is still helping some of us. Took me 10 minutes to do.
Thanks for the step by step! Made it less of a headache
Thank you for your feedback!
Thanks for the shout out Santiago!
Great video and easy to follow along. That's what the novice DIYer needs. You hit the nail on the head on this video!
By the way only 10 more subs and you can start monetization! Great job on this long journey of being a UA-cam creator and getting paid for it. 💯
Thank you Richard! .... Yes! I'm grateful to this whole community for all the support they have shown. I just want to help others. This is just one way of doing it. BTW, I loved your video. I had to include it mine just because it was so thorough. I'm gonna be email you and some of the GDO guys on UA-cam. Be on the lookout for that.
Garage door the motor is a belt drive the old one and replace the belt drive put on a new one, well done 👍👏👏👏👏.
Nice details.

Most DIY repair videos are pretty amateur. This is impressive. 👍
Really liked the “pro tips” regarding ordering the correct belt etc but hopefully by now everyone knows their model number. I just wish you had shown more detail during the installing of the new belt especially re-tensioning of the new belt.
Hello! Thanks for your feedback! I am working on another video of the belt replacement. I will try to address it then.
Too much left unexplained and video fast forwarded so I couldn’t understand. Appreciate the intent, but having to go elsewhere to figure this out.
Well done again !
Thank you Cody!
Thanks so much,saved me $$$$😎
If you are totally clueless and would like some step-by-step instructions, this video isn't it. It's meant for people who already know what to do. And the title is *MISLEADING* because the 5 minutes mentioned is how long it takes for him to show the process in ultra hyper speed. It's *NOT* the actual amount of time it'll take you to replace the belt. *edit* For easy to follow step-by-step video watch this guy instead: ua-cam.com/video/JizRggjUKdM/v-deo.html
Thank you for the info
Nice video! Glad that you got into detail on what belt you should buy. I've seen people try to use the new style belt on an old style sprocket, and... well, I'll put it this way, just like you said it doesn't really work.
By the way, were you going to email me about something or...?
Thanks Andy! Yes I have seen that also. Unfortunately there's so much bad information out there. That's why I enjoy your videos because they share a variety of good information to help this community.
And yes I will be emailing you soon. It's an idea a I have for a upcoming video.
Hello Santiago I just want to let you know that yes they are called gears back then they used to be called Cogs
Hey Liftmaster 1246. It's all good! Cogs and Gears ... now that's a good name for a UA-cam channel.
@@sosgds Interesting
How do you measure the length of the belt you need? We have a really old garage opened by a Chamberlain 8100 model. We no longer have the paper work for it so we don't know the length we need to buy in order to replace the belt. Do you measure the height of the garage door itself? Or do you measure the belt while it's still installed? I think this question is important for a video like this. Maybe an updated version of this video (that includes how to measure the belt needed) would help out?
Hello! Thank you for the great feedback. You can measure the height of the door or the height of the opening to get an idea of the length of the rail aka. belt. Of course you also want to confirm if your rail is compatible with the belts that are available now. Based on Chamberlain, this is the original part number for the belt for the model 8100M. 41A3589 Full belt assembly
You can also find it on Amazon: amzn.to/3yLZaOl
Liftmaster Belt Assembly for 7' Garage Door Opener
@sosgds Thank you so much for the reply. It was really hard to look for the right size for our garage. This part in the description on the Amazon link, ....."Also known as: 041A3589-12, 41A3589-12, 41A3589, 41A3589-3...." That's why it was so hard for us to find the right one. The only info that was available to us was the model number 8100 because of how ancient our garage system is, again thank you.
great vid! Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback!
I wish the video showed how to get the spring end of the belt off. Oh well. Thanks.
I made the mistake of disposing of my old belt before watching this video… do you have any recommendations on finding the inner trolley shaft? I was smart enough to save the spring and its assembly but didn’t detach the shaft
Just FYI No such word as "Unloosen" Does that mean tighten???
Hello. Thank you for helping me, I meant to simply say loose or release tension. I will make efforts to do better.
Lol thought the same.
I have a customer with 45dcbr5r 2014 back up battery belt drive chamberlain how do Iknow if it’s a contractor series? The belt is torn up will the 041a5250 replacement work!? Also it is piece by piece rail so assume that’s store bought version 🤔
Hello Diego! Good question. I believe the motor you are referring to is the Chamberlain B980. I will in fact use the 01A5250 part number for the belt. This belt assembly is part of the 5 piece rail on the Chamberlain retail motors. Therefore this is a retail motor and a contractor motor. Hope this helps.
Hi, how ya doin? I just moved into a brand new house and something was leaning on one of the door tracks and the garage belt broke? It is a third car garage door but we would like it working. A piece fell off that looks like one of the things you referred to in the video.
^I believe you referred to it as the link to the master version. Anyway maybe the belt was too tight but the little attachment, looks like a figure 8, fell off.
Hello. Thank you for sending in your question. A master link should be easy to find. Yet the spring nut could also be damaged.
I need some help here and I was wondering if you can give me some advise. Well I need to replace my garage door belt, the doors height is 7foot. But I have no idea what belt to buy !. The motor is chamberlain although it says Raynor and it's 3/4 HP. The model no. Is 2585RGD. I need to buy online without making the mistake buying the wrong belt because here where I reside costs $40 to 60 dollars more !. Can you help 😔.
Hello. Based on the cross reference from the Liftmaster website this model is similar to the 2280 motor. Yet it would be good to confirm with LiftMaster customer service. Here is their site reference: www.liftmaster.com/belt-kit-7/p/041A5434-11A
Amazon also has it available: amzn.to/38u1G24
LiftMaster 41A5434-11 Belt Assembly 7' Chamberlain Craftsman Garage Door Opener
Hello, thank you for the video. How do you know if the belt replacement for my unit is 7 ft, 8 ft, or 10?
Hello. You want to measure the height of your garage door. Based on the height of the door that will the belt length you need. If you have a 7 foot tall door, you need a 7 foot belt. But if you have a 7'6" tall door then you will need an 8 foot tall belt.
@@sosgds Thank you
Hi! My 8560WL-267 was about $200 new, why does the belt sell for $75 retail? Thanks….Jim
Hello Jim. It's planned obsoletion. They would rather you buy a brand new motor that repair it for less. I break it down this scenario in two ways: Would you rather spend a little money now (repair), and then a lot later (replacement)? Or would you rather spend the right amount of money now and potentially nothing later?
Is it possible to readjust the length of the belt? For example, trimming belt from 16ft to 12ft? What tools do I need?
You most definitely can. But you will also have shorten the rail assembly.
You most definitely cannot.
@@wtrf22 I was able to do it. I unbuckled the clip, cut the belt, and re-buckled it. Impossible is nothing.
@@mightGalaxyBlackhole okay kid.
How long does the average belt last?
December 14, 2023
is there something somewhere in the gear assembly thats where the gear ratio is written?
i have the Chamberlain whisper drive and needed to replace the belt. thanks
Hello! Great question. I don't believe there are any markings about the great ratio. But the two gears or belt sprockets are differentiated by the teeth. One happens to be a 9 tooth gear sprocket, the other a 12 tooth. Hope this helps!
Where can I find the dealer one?
I have an Amazon link in the description that should allow you to purchase it.
@SOS Garage Door Service also.. one more thing... if u don't mind. The last belt I bought was from ebay. It had the small hole that was wrong and the length was too long and it was for a seven foot door. Yesterday I measured the garage door at 8ft high. Please t lell me which should I purchase for my 8ft door with the larger gap between the bracket and hook
Video was too fast for me and had problems following. Perhaps this video is good for the DIY that has spent time looking at all adjacent components to the belt and can tell what is shown.
Thank you for the feedback!
Party? People??? I think I'm in the wrong place
That's a shame! We could have had some fun! 😎
Stay safe party person!
Worst video ever! Shaky camera and doesn't stay in frame on the parts long enough to see proper installation. It was like you were trying to make the frames match the God-awful music in the background.
Thanks for the feedback.
Trying too hard. Just get the info out there
Thank you for your feedback.
My desire to overachieve has failed me again. I hope you find the "info" that you're looking for.
The messed up part of a bad belt is it snapping as the garage door is up and standing under the garage door that 12 foot wide not knowing when the last time it was serviced and knocking me on my ass the other part is the long time the management got somebody out to fix it and leaving us a LiftMaster garage door remote that will not work on this old model liftmastar motor assembly
