Garage Door Motor Not Working - Solved!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- Is your garage door motor not working? In my case, this was due to a solder on the printed circuit board breaking off. The solution is to simply resolder the connection and you are back in business. Save yourself time and money and use this easy fix.

Saw your video and used this exact technique to fix my board. I’m a total novice and your video gave me confidence and it was fun to fix
AMAZING. I said no way this can work. Saw three dark solder connections under the relay. Hit them all with a little solder, put it back together, and the light came on as you said this was a great sign. I'm guessing a professional would have charged a fortune and replaced with parts. As the others have said "YOU THE MAN!"
Was not looking forward to buying and installing a new garage door opener. Thankfully I came across this video. Fix took all of five minutes. Took longer to cleanup.
Thanks so much for the video. My 22 year old opener experienced the same problem. Resoldered the connection and fixed!
I went through several diagnostics; RPM sensor resistance, direct charge to motor, transformer check and this one worked. 8 month old unit and found a bad solder on the MoBo (logic board). This was the fix. Thank you for video!
Dude, you rock.
Just finished mine...same issue.
Different model.
Without your vid, I would have had to buy a new one.
Thanks
I unplugged mine and it works now 😅
Thank you sir.
Straightforward and no wasted time. I haven’t tried that fix yet but now I know what to look for.
Thanks a bunch! Just fixed my Craftsman 1/2 HP opener (late 90s vintage) by fixing the board as you show here. My failed joint turned out to be the same exact one as yours. Your video made it easy after finding the OP that never really discusses disassembly as you do here. Between the 2 of you you've saved people a lot of money and kept these openers out of the landfills where they would have ended up. So thanks a million Chief!
For others tackling this, after you remove the end plate where the board is attached, it you take then take off the metal enclosure that covers the motor, etc., is is much easier to remove and to reinstall the header connector without fumbling around to get it aligned, etc. There isn't much service length on those wires as you can see from the video so it's easier to have the whole bottom of the opener open to get your hand in there and to see what you are doing.
I had the exact same problem. Tried to set up a new garage door remote, when I pressed the learn button, the entire thing popped and I saw a spark go off. Took it apart and the exact same problem had occurred. Never soldered anything in my life, but was an easy fix after watching a how-to video. Put it back together and it works completely fine again. You sir, are the MAN!!!!! Saved me quite a lot of money. Thank you for this video.
Thank you! Your video saved my 22 year old garage door opener.
Like others, I got lucky and found this video in an attempt to resuscitate my 27 year old lift master garage door opener. I had the exact same issue. Performed the exact same 5 minute fix. Had the exact same success!!! Thanks so much for posting this video!!!
i have the same 25 year old opener which stopped working 1 yr ago, seen you video and the first soder connection was black so i touched it up with soder and BOOOMM problem fixed. your the man. thanks for your help!!!!!
Thanks for the video, Chris! I just fixed mine and works great!
I don't normally comment on videos but this one saved me alot of time and money thank you so much!
UA-cam DIY video have saved me thousands of $$$
Sir, you are THE MAN!! Came home and my garage door did exactly what yours did in the video. I took it apart and found the same thing you talked about. The solder was broke in the one you said it normally breaks on. So needles to say you saved me a lot of time and money. Took about 10 minutes and the job was done and the door opens and closes like it should. So again.... thank you!

@@ChristopherLum WHAT ARE YOU, SOME KIND OF WIZARD?!?!
So glad I found this video. I have the same model and had just spent time replacing the inner gears. Then today it just stopped working. Watched this video and then after buying another iron and sod, because of course, I couldn't find mine, I touched up the exact spot the video showed and shazam, fixed. thanks again
It worked! Thank you! I didn't think it would tbh😊
Thank you so much, I have a lift-master opener displaying the same symptoms. Your diagnostic and repair procedures were spot on. Problem resolved, your the man.

Thanks for this clear trouble shooting. I have the same machine, same symptoms, and one bad solder joint. (different joint). Badda Boom, back in business!!
Thanks for the video. I watched this and You nailed the problem that I had. In fact it was the exact same solder points!
It worked! Thank you so much!
Mine had the same issue, i just soldered it.. it was an easy fix
thank you for your video..
I found a burnt solder point on a sub board. Took a chance and resoldered it and it works. Thanks for the tip. Woo hoo!!
Great video. My parents garage door opener just stopped working. Going to check out the circuitboard after work today.
Thanks a lot this worked great and fixed my door opener. Good thing I came across your video. Thanks again 😊
Wow, thanks for the great video and what to look for. I have a 2006 Lift Master which is totally different and much newer, but thn yours but I had the same conditions so I took the two circuit boards out and looked for the relays...Found one relay terminal that the solder had come loose so I re-soldered re-assembled and it works like new! Saved at least $125 on a new board and way more if I replaced the whole unit, and more again if I called a garage door company.
Thank you!
Don (Kathy's husband)
Thanks! Exact problem I had which I thought was a unique problem. Turns out is more common than not! Saved me some money!
This is great. Going to follow what you did and see if mine gets fixed as well.
Thanks for sharing
You are the man
I was rolling my eyes watching this. Then I looked at my board same problem same spot. I desoldered it and it's working. Saved $400 .. again you da man.
I think this is where the relay contact energizes the motor and there is arcing .. over time THIS happens. That the theory .. you da man!
Nice! Thanks for publishing it.
For your capabilities, it is child's play.
Suggestion:
You can put garage door grease in the vertical rails for smooth roll and less noise.
Cheers
I was having the same issues when I came across this video. I was able to fix able to fix the problem in seconds. Thanks for this video it saved me hundreds of dollars

I want to thank you so much for the video. My opened crashed the other day and I found your video. I follwed your process step by step and sure enough, it turned out to be the same solder joint on the board that was bad. A few drops of solder and my opener is working again!! Thank you so much for your content!!

You save my time. Thanks a lot. 👍
😂😂😂 it works bud thanks.. I just looked for a burnt or cracked sadder spots and repaired it... now it's working even the light that I thought was burnt-out it came on...😂😂
perfect timing, thanks bro!
Can’t thank you enough! I have a chamberlain model from the same year… Normally not that handy, however, your video made sense, and I got it done! I was about to pull the trigger on a new one, so again thank you!
Nice job dude. I'm hoping for a similar fix on my garage opener too!
This was helpful. I was slow because I typically don’t jump into this kind of stuff. One twist though, mine had two circuit boards, the first one was clean which was discouraging, but the second one had the exact same issue. Took me two hours including watching the video, the soldering took 5 minutes.
I'm going to take mine apart. If I see what u found I'll learn how to solder. Thanks for the instructions. Seems like and hopefully it's an easy fix.
Super cool result on your fix. I'm running into the same thing today, but I'll probably be buying a new unit anyway. Not sure finding a potential loose soldering will be my luck. We'll see...but I'll try a few more things.
Thanks for the idea and of course I'm gonna try to fix it up by myself and save some money.
Great video. I took it apart as you showed and looked at all the beads. I used my cellphone to magnify a bit more. Found one bead that looked suspect. Soldered it and we are back in business. Awesome advice and it probably saved me hundreds to have it replaced. Hopefully it lasts…

Thank you!!
Thanks so much , I had the exact same problem and it cost me ten dollars for the soldering gun and the solder .
Thanks you’re big help! ❤
My garage door was on the way down after I used the remote and about a foot from being closed it went back up and wouldnt work at all even with the wall control. I didnt know about unplugging the opener and plugging it back in but I tried it and all is well. Mine is a Genie screw drive opener that I bought in 1998 so thanks for the tip.
I share your excitement of success!
Thanks a lot I had the same problem.
Reporting back. I had the same exact issue. I went and bought a $20 soldering kit and soldered the obvious one that had burned out. It worked just like in the video.
I had exactly the same issue and you helped me solve it. Id guess programmed obsolescence worked good for the manufacturer ;). Thanks!
Thanks for your video, I have same problem, I removed the circuit board , noticed one the connection to the relay was melted, solder it back and everything works. Thanks again
This is exactly what mine is doing. I'm going to take mine apart and update if I find something. Thanks
WOW!! Had this occur today in my garage. Took it apart and sure enough found a bad solder. Resolder and working like a charm! Thanks so much for this video!!
Mine is the exact same model opener and yesterday it died. Doesn’t do anything. No lights, no clicks. Wonder if it could be the same thing? Nice video!! Thank you!
Good work👍 My garage got no power you have any idea why??
5 hours of research 5 minutes to fix. Wish I would have found this video first!!
Thank you 😊
Thanks!
Exact same problem. Trying this tomorrow! Thanks!
I couldn’t sleep thinking about if this would work so I did it tonight lol. Same exact solder for me as well! Works like a charm!!!! Ty sooooo much man!

I like your video I wish I could find a burned weld on my board. I don’t see any problem with my board but I get the same symptom. It’s a chamberlain half horsepower 2006 garage door opener. Any suggestions let me know thank you
I got the exact same model as yours. Bought it back in the 90s. Got fried today De 2023.
The first try, the door lifted open. It stopped working when I tried to shut the garage door.
So, if all else fails, I'll give your fix a try.
yhank you
so my sensors are okay, but suddenly, the craftsman garage door opener stopped operating, and the yellow led is slowly blinking, why suggestions? It seems like the control unit that is attached to the wall is not responding, for some reason. Only lights get turned on when you cross the sensor path.
hey so i just moved and have the same door opener. sensor lights are on and fine and the door opens but when i go to close it, it acts like it wants to close and then goes back up. and then the light blinks 4 times. would you know what the problem would be? thanks
Nice job. I have the exact same opener. My problem is that it will close but only if I hold down the close button. Opens perfectly fine. I’ve seen videos saying “look at the sensors by the door and see if there is a light on”. Well mines so old it doesn’t have lights. Lol. I have already moved the sensors trying to make sure their aligned but with no luck. 🤷
Hello.. i almost watched all of your videos ...thank you for such great contents... !!I have a question for you... I am a student of mechanical engineering... I am trying to plot dispersion curve of waves propagations... With which software do you recommend that i do that ?? Is it possible to do it using matlab ???

Today my GDO did the same thing. 5 blinking lights and a clicking. Light bulb comes on but motor not working. Trouble shooting says either tensioner or mother board is fried. 😂 I will open it up and look for the fried solder and update you! 😅
You should become a sportscaster or meteorologist lol that voice
2:35 I see 3 white wires. which one is red power and black ground ?
Wha kind of soldering I need to get?
How do I fix garage not moving but motor works? Help
Sir my garage door not fully open justlike half open how to solve?
I want your all the material(notes ,code and videos) available on optimization. As i am from India and there don't have international card so i can pay only in rupee. Please help so that i can get better understanding of Optimization and improve my grade
.
How do you sauder????
What if you don't know how to solder? Is there somewhere I can take it to solder it?
You Tube. Soldering is "brain dead" simple.
Solution: learn to solder 🤣
I'm having the same issue with my craftsman garage door, probably just as old but unfortunately I don't know anything about soldering things or have such tools! Any places I've called all talk about me replacing my unit which is about $500 to $600 or one place was just to come for a service call to figure out what's wrong is $230! Uggggh!
I think that soldering point made intently to make this video
I'm nitpicking. When you pull the power cord grasp the cord cap, not the cord. Nice job with the video!
Any idea if the diagnostic light does nothing? The door opener next to the actual door is rapidly flashing, sensor are working and aligned correctly, no humming from motor, literally nothing happens when I try to open with the remote or the door opener next to the garage door
I know this is late but usually if the opener pad/switch is rapidly flashing that means you engaged the security lock which prevents any remotes or the pad from opening the door. If you look closely one of the 3 buttons on the wired pad should have a lock symbol. Press and hold that for a second or so and it should stop flashing and work again.
@@kikcodog thanks for the reply, I’ve tried that several times still nothing. There is also a lock button on the remote, tried hitting that no luck. Could bad/dead batteries in the remote cause this?
Loose screw on laser or button has same effect
I have a brand new one that is doing this
You think you can do a video of this unit again
Old wooden door. Very heavy.
Thanks!
Mike, thanks for supporting the channel. I hope this helped out and got your garage door working again.
