    Excellent video! Helped me make the correct choice on belts, and showed me how to remove and replace it with minimum effort. I am an elderly geezer, but take pride in doing many projects with a little education. This was what I needed. Took me 30 minutes, but I'm careful and slow. Done!

    Thanks you for this video. I wouldn’t have known where to start. Instead of paying $300-400 I spent $35 at Amazon and knocked it out in about 10 minutes!

    Excellent video on this. Its nice to see someone fixing an older unit rather then replacing it.

      Thanks, Sam. Unit works great and it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace a belt vs. the whole thing!

    Smart choice fixing this opener. This was one of the best openers ever made I’d love to have one in my garage

    I would like to say, thanks so much for this how to video, I’ve always been somewhat of a resourceful do it yourself or kind of guy, and this pointed me in the right direction and saved my in-laws $700 having some snarky mechanic gouge them, thanks again, sir!

      Awesome! Glad you were able to save them some money! BTW, this happened to my other garage door about 3 years later. Was even easier the second time 🙂

    I needed this yesterday! However, my approach was slightly different since I only needed to replace the end sprocket above the motor. Also, I have a Liftmaster 8550W which has a longer bolt. I loosened the bolt and used locking pliers to release the tension and then unfastened the other end of the belt. This allowed me to replace the sprocket and reuse the belt. I had seen this sort of repair on point so yours was help in that regard.

    Nice repair job, I’m thinking my belt failed today, motor runs smoothly but belt doesn’t move at all, was that similar to your situation before repair? I’m recovering from a broken leg so I haven’t been on a ladder yet to take off the top cover to look at the belt.

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому +1

      Yes, that's exactly what mine looked like from the bottom: belt not moving. I also saw some bare spots on the belt (could only see the wires that run thru the whole belt) in places but that may not be visible on yours.

    Can you manually open your garage door if the belt is like that mine just broke but I have too much stuff in the way and need to open the door to access the belt

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому

      Yes, door can be lifted manually after disconnecting the latch (pull the string that hangs down to disconnect).

    What if I forgot to measure the spring length? Would it be safe to use your measurement of 1 and 1/4”?
    I replaced the sprocket and had to loosen the spring to get the sprocket assembly..

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому +1

      Yes, that should be fine. Of course, run a test after everything is back together to make sure it all operates smoothly and stops where it's supposed to.

    So how did your trolley know where the belt broke? I had to cycle mine down and know where it was otherwise I’d had to make 50 adjustments to my up down travel

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому +1

      I don't think it knows but I stopped the motor once the door was closed and installed the new belt in pretty much the exact same spot, so I only needed a few adjustments before it was good to go.

    Is there a special size that I need to order or are garage belts pretty much universal to fit any garage opener?

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому

      They're not all the same but there are standard sizes. This one is a standard size and the Amazon listing says which type of opener and door height it's compatible with.

    • @bagofsoda7464
      @bagofsoda7464 11 місяців тому

      Measure the height of your garage door. If it’s 7ft long, order a 7ft belt. If 10ft, order a 10ft belt.

    Love the video. I have the same issue with the same craftsman opener. I ordered the A5434-11A Belt Kit, 7' and that seems to not fit and is maybe half inch short. I think I may have the wrong replacement belt. What belt model did you use for your replacement?

    How do you find the belt number you need?

    • @FixEverythingYourself
      @FixEverythingYourself  Рік тому

      I think I got mine from the owner's manual. Other option would be to get the model number off your garage motor, then look up the belt number.

    You didn’t show how to put the door arm back on the teeth… which is why I came to this video 😢
